Breaking: Major money trail ties agent to ex-UNC Associate Head Coach [12:30am]

Our author team was talking amongst ourselves today and everyone was charged with being on high alert for some major news breaking because (1) a little birdie had contacted us earlier in the week with some scoop and (2) Dick Baddour was on the radio today.

If you have learned anything about the current scandal at Carolina then you must know by now that the good folks of the highest integrity in the world – the guardians of the “The Carolina Way” – only speak to the media and go on the radio right before some bad news is about to break. Thanks to Dickie today, we were prepared! Tonight, we learn why old Dickie was on his media tour today.

Full article.

Prominent NFL agent Gary Wichard and former University of North Carolina assistant football coach John Blake have engaged in multiple financial transactions since May of 2007, a four-month investigation by Yahoo! Sports has found.

Wichard and Blake are now at the center of NCAA and North Carolina Secretary of State probes, which are seeking to determine the nature and scope of alleged agent tampering involving the football program. Those investigations have also focused on Tar Heels defensive tackle Marvin Austin, who has made at least five trips that have come under scrutiny. Two of those trips included training at a California facility less than two miles from Wichard’s agency, Pro Tect Management. Yahoo! Sports has obtained a hotel receipt from one of those trips, which lists Austin’s name above Pro Tect Management, as well as an address and Marriott Rewards number belonging to an NFL marketing agent who represents two current Pro-Tect clients.

On Blake receiving money from Wichard:

But three sources said documents show the relationship between Wichard and Blake also extended into the financial realm several times over the past three years. Those instances included:

• At least six wire transfers from Wichard’s private bank – The First National Bank of Long Island – to Blake.

• A $45,000 personal loan to Blake from The First National Bank of Long Island.

• A Pro Tect Management credit card issued in Blake’s name.

We would also recommend that you take a look at SFN’s Tweets in real time from tonight that can be seen here. Some pretty awesome running commentary there.

If you have spoken to any UNC-CH fan in the last couple of months, then you obviously know by now that “everybody does it”. Of course, most of the national media cannot think of a single instance where an Associate Head Coach of a major college program was actually a runner for an agent…but, what do they know? What would Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, ESPN and Yahoo know about sports?! They just need to talk to some Carolina people and learn that ‘everybody’ has Associate Head Coaches accepting and potentially funneling hundreds of thousands of dollars to players!

Just for some grounding in this topic, the following are some comments from national and local media hitting the “Twitter universe” tonight. Obviously they don’t have a clue about what they speak!

Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports: @dennisdoddcbs Reggie Bush wasn’t a USC employee. John Blake was asst. head coach on payroll — and allegedly on the take.

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports: @DanWetzel Asst coach taking money from agent to steer players would be most devastating NCAA case in years. UNC..may be in huge trouble

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports: @DanWetzel They’d never do it. Plus, UNC not repeat offender. But massive sanctions? Yes RT @Andy_Staples @DanWetzel Can you say Death Penalty?

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: @Andy_Staples North Carolina is about to really become a basketball school — because it may not have a football program after this http://is.gd/fBnLf

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated: @Andy_Staples Can you say Death Penalty?

Pat Forde of ESPN: @espn4d: Yahoo story pounds some very detailed nails into North Carolina’s football coffin: http://tinyurl.com/26k9x2q

Synrgy Sports: @SynrgySports: NEVER been a case..where an Associate Head Coach of a major D1 football prgrm has been proven to be on an agent’s payroll.

It should be pointed out that just today at the Raleigh Sports Club speech, Dick Baddour said “the integrity of UNC is paramount.”  (Link) That “integrity” crap has been a running theme from the  “leadership” over there.  According to UNC-CH, Blake “resigned” in August because he was a “distraction” and, according to Butch, Marvin Austin is working his way back onto the team.  Are they still standing by those ridiculous staetments?   That is some super integrity they are showing over there!

Given tonight’s news, you have to wonder if the time hasn’t come that some actual adults will be forced to take over the process in Chapel Hill.

SFN will have more coverage and analysis of these major developments. In the meantime, we turn your attention to another reason why you should be leveraging our message boards – this post from February of this year titled “Black Santa accused of paying recruits in Chapel Hill”. NO!?

  2. Wufpacker 09/29/2010 at 10:05 PM #

    Beautiful!

    Not surprising. But still beautiful.

“Yahoo! Sports has obtained a hotel receipt from one of those trips, which lists Austin’s name above Pro Tect Management…”

Ummmm…is that an insinuation that Marvin was considered an employee of Pro Tect? As in on the payroll?

  4. El Scrotcho 09/29/2010 at 10:12 PM #

I was about to post earlier that the UNC story was grinding into the background due to fatigue. NEVERMIND!!!!

  5. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 10:14 PM #

Wow. Get thought the whole story. Just amazing. Thanks BigMarv!

It is only going to get worse.

  6. WV Wolf 09/29/2010 at 10:15 PM #

    And boom goes the dynamite.

Hotel receipts, bank records, flight records, all sorts of great stuff in this article.

And if all this went down in the summer of 09, doesn’t that mean Marvin was ineligible and also means a nice 0-12 for Chief Butch last year?

  7. El Scrotcho 09/29/2010 at 10:22 PM #

    I <3 Yahoo! Sports.

  8. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 10:33 PM #

There is so much in this article, so please don’t just read what I have quoted. There is a lot of detail, so don’t miss it.

Just when I was about to call it a night, this turns up.

Thanks yahoo for doing the job our local media doesn’t want to do. Wonder how this will be rationalized away.

Did I get this right, Austin went to California twice, once in July of 09 and previously in march during spring break 2009?

  10. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 10:39 PM #

    ^Yes, two trips to Cali.

  11. Wufpacker 09/29/2010 at 10:41 PM #

    ^^ That’s the way I read it.

It seems to me that the attempt to pass off that last page of the multi-page receipt with the information deleted isn’t going to look too good, privacy issues or not.

As I told WV Wolf last year, the only way that UNC would ever get in trouble with the NCAA would be if some non-biased national media would initially go after them. Our guess would be Yahoo. Now, look at this. Unbelievable. I now have Yahoo, SFN, Joe Giglio, and Marvin Austin’s Twitter page to thank for all of this.

  13. coppertop 09/29/2010 at 10:44 PM #

I just want to echo Daily’s urging to read the whole article…

    Well worth the read.

  14. Old MacDonald 09/29/2010 at 10:45 PM #

I guess I filed my nightly report too early.

  15. Wufpacker 09/29/2010 at 10:45 PM #

So at this point, whoever talks first gets the best deal, right? Wichard, Blake, Mikhail or Austin? Who sings first?

  16. Old MacDonald 09/29/2010 at 10:46 PM #

Also, is there any doubt at all that their 2009 season will be vacated?

  17. VaWolf82 09/29/2010 at 10:47 PM #

Prominent NFL agent Gary Wichard and former University of North Carolina assistant football coach John Blake have engaged in multiple financial transactions since May of 2007,

I think that “Lack of Institutional Control” has just been documented beyond any reasonable doubt.

    – multiple cases of academic cheating
    – multiple players accepting improper beneftis
    – coach receiving money from an agent (is this a new prong?)

I’m still waiting on the unspoken prong, recruiting violations, to come out into the light.

  18. Ismael 09/29/2010 at 10:50 PM #

And we would of gotten away with it if it weren’t for those meddling kids!!

  19. VaWolf82 09/29/2010 at 10:51 PM #

Don’t you mean “those twittering kids”?

  20. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 10:52 PM #

Vawolf: Note that MA’s high school coach was implicated as having paid for MA’s plane trips to California. The payoffs could go all the way back to HS. We know Blake was getting paid by Wichard since 2007. Where was this money going? It isn’t like Blake wasn’t making a lot of money working at UNC.

  21. WV Wolf 09/29/2010 at 10:52 PM #

And notice on the first hotel bill that Marvin ordered 2 of the $15 dollar movies that they don’t print the names of on the bill…

  22. Wufpacker 09/29/2010 at 10:53 PM #

VaWolf82, I’m sure someone is digging trying to trace the money from Wichard to Blake, then from Blake to…..?

I’d be shocked if some of that money didn’t go to recruits. The question is can it be traced, is there a paper trail? Probably not.

  23. VaWolf82 09/29/2010 at 10:56 PM #

Note that MA’s high school coach was implicated as having paid for MA’s plane trips to California.

Wasn’t there a Marvin tweet about a “wallet” and one of his HS coaches?

I wonder if the NCAA has interviewed that coach?

  24. Daily Update 09/29/2010 at 10:57 PM #

IMO, the investigation is only beginning. There are so many potential prongs from this point. This isn’t going to end anytime soon. Big time football in Chapel Hill is dead.

Now we just need to beat VT!!!!!

  25. Old MacDonald 09/29/2010 at 10:57 PM #

We know from Bama’s Dareus that Marvin was paying for the plane flights and hotel rooms for the recruits who came to the Memorial Day party. Where did that money come from?
