Julius Mays will transfer, family says (11:30 p.m. update)

Where there is smoke there is usually fire.

The rumors regarding Julius Mays potentially transferring from NC State have been on the message boards for a few days, but this morning things got a bit more intense. It’s tough to say whether Mays’ potential decision to transfer says anything about the recruitment of CJ Leslie, but it certainly appears a connection is there. It’s tough to blame Mays for leaving. His minutes would have likely gone way down next year compared with his first two years on campus. He can go somewhere smaller and get playing time and be a contributor to a solid mid-major type team.

Here’s a radio segment from this morning.

WRAL: PackPride: Signs point to Mays transferring from NC State

Message boards and Internet rumors. The latest one involves N.C. State guard Julius Mays leaving the program.

PackPride.com editor James Henderson joined Mark Thomas on 620 The Buzz Wednesday morning. Henderson was aware of the impending situation with Mays but was noncommittal when discussing it on the show.

“We really can’t run anything on that situation until we can get someone to publicly comment on it,” Henderson said. “But from everything we gathered all signs point to that happening. It’s just a matter of us reaching Julius, a family member, someone along those lines to confirm it.”

UPDATE

Pack Pride: Mays to Transfer

A source close to the situation has informed Pack Pride sophomore guard Julius Mays will transfer from NC State at the end of the school semester. A family member confirmed that Mays would be leaving NC State, but has yet to decide on a destination.

“He’s transferring,” said Mays’ grandfather. “I don’t know where he’s going yet. He told us we would talk about all of that when he got home from North Carolina.”

I hope these rumors are just what they are, rumors. Even with Ryan Harrow,
There have not been any reports that L Brown has qualified and with Degand
career ending and only Javi G and Ryan H potentially the only guards on the roster is scary. I agree that Mayes may not be the best of players but he is a guard and i am confused over the CJ Leslie stuff? CJ Leslie is a forward not a guard. The best decision that J Mayes can do is stay put and compete for a starting job and work on his overall game. If you want to be the best player possible, work on your game and play against the finest players in the country in the ACC. But if you run to say APP STATE or Elon etc, then what does that say about you? In fact, why would you want a kid that moans about playing time if he is not dedicated to making himself a better player or then again student!!

Obviously the kid needs to do some soul searching, and develop some character and guts !!!

with the twitter account, CJL just re-posts everything everyone says. whether its a state fan saying come or a uk fan. he likes it all and re-posts it… so don’t look into twitter for ideas cause he doesn’t give any. do look into Julius Hodge though and his twitter… cause he is heavy in CJL’s ear, and the posts he sends after their workouts and chats are promising

also if Mays stays or goes, it wouldn’t bother me. I’m a massive state fan, but there’s something about him and when he is on the court with the ball that makes me cringe and worry. He just doesn’t have natural point guard skills, or confidence for that matter. But he would be good to keep with his experience in case of injuries, but yeah def getting a lot less minutes.

If Mays Decides to Leave, I Wish Him All The Best…He Has Had Some Good Moments Here, Despite His Troubles At Times…In The End, I Hope He’ll Look Back On His Time Here Fondly…

I like Mays and hope that he stays. He’s hit some game winners, nailed some critical free throws and by all accounts is a good influence off the court. I remember he was selected “best teammate” by the staff after his freshman year. I like those kinds of kids.

In my mind, he was going to be able to slide back into his more natural position next season (SG). If he’d have spent all summer on his spot up jump shot and his jump shot from a screen, he’d have been a pretty valuable commodity even if he did play limited minutes. His time playing PG probably helped improve his ball handling skills.

For those who seem indifferent, this could hurt us potentially with APR. Does anyone know his academic standing?

It baffles my mind at how optimistic or foolish some fans are. How can we better from a kid who has benefited from significant playing time the past two years. Two freshman guards are magically going to come in and play 40 minutes a game? Brown is going to clone himself and take May’s scholly? Sid is going to jump in the hot tub time machine and come back as the 1983 guard? We’ll never be in foul trouble? Mabry is going to turn into a guard? We’ll never need Mays to play to rest Brown/Harrow against UNC-G or to let a player catch their breath for 3 minutes?

And if it is about playing time (its not), why would a kid leave a program who IS ON the two-deep to sit out a full year to play for who…BC? Doesn’t add up. This is a loss and yes you shouldn’t pull your hair out over it but its a loss nonetheless because we’ll just have f****** scholly sitting their. Its like taking money out of a CD…sure its not earning much buts unless you have a better investment don’t take it out just to shove up your ass!!!!

Rick posts “Mays is leaving. Let’s not trash him. You can talk about his deficiencies but do not run him into the ground”

  8. gcpack 04/21/2010 at 9:44 PM #

On a different note: WOLFPACK 8, ECU 6
    In Greenville.

Good to beat the aaaarrggghhh breaths since they backed out of playing State in Raleigh. Good riddance.

  9. rtpack24 04/21/2010 at 10:02 PM #

CJ comes it increases Woods minutes at 2. JM is a solid basketball player that has been playing out of position most of the time. He can go mid major and play. All of this will clear up by the first part of May if not sooner.

  10. winstonwolf1 04/21/2010 at 10:46 PM #

This is sad. When the movers come at him, he’ll probably just start backing up until he’s out of the apartment altogether. Perhaps he and Marques Johnson can join together to create a dynamic duo of basketball awesomeness. Of course, the new coach will have to design an offense that only goes to the right, and allows players who are trapped against the sideline to score, but that’s a small hurdle.

  11. winstonwolf1 04/21/2010 at 10:52 PM #

Ultimately, Mays added no more “depth in the backcourt” than any other player who couldn’t dribble against pressure, or pass against decent defense. He was a six foot guard with the speed of a post player, the jumping ability of score keeper, and the ball handling off a linebacker.

Whoever on the staff evaluated Mays, Johnson, Javi, Degand, Carrot Top et al and decided to either keep them on the roster or offer them scholarships, should be added to the roles of the unemployed without delay. Poor talent evaluation has been the single biggest cause of Lowe’s lack of success these past four years.

  12. packfan03 04/21/2010 at 11:17 PM #

^Yep, hopefully Sid has evaluated CJ, Ryan and Zo well??? It’s not hard to evaluate talent. It’s hard to get the talent. That has been the problem so far. We haven’t consistently brought in players that can compete in the ACC.

  13. AveryPage 04/21/2010 at 11:26 PM #

i would rather have Kufuor or Vandenberg running the point instead of Mays.

KentuckySportsNetwork has a post specifically about the “wolfpackncst” tweet:
    http://www.kentuckysportsnetwork.com/forum/topics/nc-state-helping-uk-recruit?commentId=2148737%3AComment%3A284802&xg_source=activity

One thing I noticed: All the Kent fans (I’m not sure; is that how they abbreviate it? :)) refer to State as NC St.

Also fishy, “wolfpackncst” has a grand total of 5 tweets. His first was the CJ Leslie tweet and all subsequent ones are responses concerning it. I guess he was inspired to create a twitter account just to let Wolfpack Nation…sorry, NC St nation…know that CJ Leslie is garbage.

http://twitter.com/wolfpackncst (notice in his bio that “NCST is da best.” The only people who use “NCST” are those who only see it in the ticker on ESPN.

  15. aPACKadeez 04/22/2010 at 12:22 AM #

Is it possible that Mays is leaving to open up a scholly for Mabry? Isn’t he the one that’s our “surprise visitor” on The Wolfpacker headline???

  16. wolfonthehill 04/22/2010 at 5:25 AM #

    I hate Twitter.

And honestly, from what I saw of Leslie at the McD’s game (and dunk contest), he did appear to be a head case (and not really give that much of a damn). But of course, that was just a snapshot, and it was an all-star game.

  17. wolfmanmat 04/22/2010 at 7:16 AM #

^Nobody cares about the McD’s game. No defense at all…it is basically a dunk contest, meant for spectator enjoyment. It’s not a competition. …Anyway, I agree with many posters here: Mays is not good. He is a good person though, and a big part of why Scott Wood is here…let’s not forget they went to the same high school. It is always tough to see a kid transfer, but let’s not pretend he would play any this year for any reason…nor would we want him too, because if he’s playing in the ACC then your team is having issues.

  18. haze 04/22/2010 at 7:37 AM #

Julius Mays is doing what is right for Julius Mays and not for NC State, and that’s how it should be. The kid has to live his life. If it so happens that we get an extra scholly and want to give it to Mabry ASAP, so be it.

As a player at the ACC level, Mays was OK but a shade below where he needed to be to prosper. He is a solid scorer with some PG skills but, for his size, he’s a step slow.

Assuming Brown gets here, Mays would clearly be the 4th option in the back court (behind Javi, Harrow, Brown) next year. If we also get CJL, then Julius would slip to the 5th option as Wood and CJ Williams would push a little more to the 2 than the 3 position. What’s more, the situation wouldn’t be a lot better his Sr year as Harrow, Brown, Wood and CJW would all return. State would benefit from having him for spot duty, experience and injury protection. However, Mays is clearly doing the right thing. He can be a good mid-major player and really enjoy his last 2 years of eligibility.

  19. Daily Update 04/22/2010 at 8:25 AM #

    Good observation NYCfan.

  20. emr62 04/22/2010 at 9:22 AM #

Honestly, Mays was an over-hyped recruit, he is small, doesn’t shoot well and a liability on D. Probably is a nice kid. Good luck.

  21. blackdom 04/22/2010 at 9:36 AM #

Yes emr62^ Mays was over hyped and recruited by whom?

  22. T-FIC 04/22/2010 at 9:49 AM #

I don’t want to trash the guy, but Mays was absolutely horrible to watch and every time he would turn the ball over he would throw his hands up in the air like it wasn’t his fault that he threw the ball out of bounds.

Every error he made he seemed to blame on someone else. His body language is not what a leader on the floor should be. I thought he would have been more promising after his freshman year but what a disappointment. He does not need to to play PG for a DIV I school.

  23. beer03 04/22/2010 at 9:57 AM #

What Packbackr said…….does anyone know if T. Mabrey has a committable offer?

  24. Wulfpack 04/22/2010 at 9:59 AM #

We can’t afford to be losing players. We don’t have that luxury. Mays had his moments. He was a serviceable guard who showed flashes of promise. Terrible ball handler but pretty good shooter.

I am surprised he just got up and left without a place to go. He’ll be a decent mid-major player, but his speed and ball handling are issues for the D-1 level.

Its Always Funny to See The VASTLY Different Perspectives People Have of A Player…

Mays Leaving Doesn’t Hurt Our Depth Prospective Unless Things Completely Break Down For Us and Brown Doesn’t Qualify & Leslie Goes to UK…

If Brown Qualifies & Leslie Commits:

We Have 5 Players, Who Can Rotate In And Out of 2 Positions…3 as PG (Javi, Harrow, Brown) and 3 as SG (Brown, CJW, & Wood)… Also, at SF we’d have 3 Players for 1 Position (CJL, Wood, Davis)…That’s Not Including Mabry…

Without CJL we’d still have 3 players who can handle point and 3 who can play SG…with another 3 that can def play SF (Wood, Mabry, Davis, even CJW at times)…

My arguement is that depth wouldn’t be an issue…which I’m sure is the biggest factor in Mays’ decision, his role on the team…but we would definitely lose experience…

I Will Say This is All Contingent Upon Brown Qualifying…if not… :/
