Julius Mays will transfer, family says (11:30 p.m. update)

Where there is smoke there is usually fire.

The rumors regarding Julius Mays potentially transferring from NC State have been on the message boards for a few days, but this morning things got a bit more intense. It’s tough to say whether Mays’ potential decision to transfer says anything about the recruitment of CJ Leslie, but it certainly appears a connection is there. It’s tough to blame Mays for leaving. His minutes would have likely gone way down next year compared with his first two years on campus. He can go somewhere smaller and get playing time and be a contributor to a solid mid-major type team.

Here’s a radio segment from this morning.

WRAL: PackPride: Signs point to Mays transferring from NC State

Message boards and Internet rumors. The latest one involves N.C. State guard Julius Mays leaving the program.

PackPride.com editor James Henderson joined Mark Thomas on 620 The Buzz Wednesday morning. Henderson was aware of the impending situation with Mays but was noncommittal when discussing it on the show.

“We really can’t run anything on that situation until we can get someone to publicly comment on it,” Henderson said. “But from everything we gathered all signs point to that happening. It’s just a matter of us reaching Julius, a family member, someone along those lines to confirm it.”

UPDATE

Pack Pride: Mays to Transfer

A source close to the situation has informed Pack Pride sophomore guard Julius Mays will transfer from NC State at the end of the school semester. A family member confirmed that Mays would be leaving NC State, but has yet to decide on a destination.

“He’s transferring,” said Mays’ grandfather. “I don’t know where he’s going yet. He told us we would talk about all of that when he got home from North Carolina.”

Even if CJL does not come here, I still don’t see Mays getting many minutes next year. You’d think that the top 8 would be
    Harrow
    Brown
    Javi
    CJW
    Wood
    Howell
    Tracy
    Painter or Vandenburg

  2. Daily Update 04/21/2010 at 11:08 AM #

This has nothing to do with CJL. There is a scholarship available for him. It could have something to do with making this a 4 man class (T. Mabry?).

“We can’t run anything about it …” so we’ll just talk about it on the radio, giving it the air of fact. Journalism at its best.

I’m disappointed it didn’t work out for Mays. He seems like a good kid and a hard worker.

PacknSack…what was he supposed to do? Mark Thomas asked the question. Blame him.

  6. Rochester 04/21/2010 at 11:25 AM #

jbpackfan, agreed. I thought we’d really grow to like him after a few of his better games as a freshman. But he seemed miscast as a point guard and suddenly this year he couldn’t shoot any more. Great free throw shooter, but he couldn’t do a whole lot else. If he gets his stroke back he might really help a smaller school somewhere.

He had the opportunity to play ball for a great school on a national stage. He even hit a game winner or two. In the end he is just going to get leap frogged, Harrow improved at a faster rate than he did. I don’t blame for leaving though. No kid wants to be buried on the bench for a year and MAYBE be a solid back up to a sophmore for his senior year. I wish him all the best.

The girlfriend sometimes plays a bigger role in these situations than one would think, or what the kid would let on.

So Mabry making an official visit Thursday?

    CJ just retweeted this gem:

RT @wolfpackncst: TRUST me NCST fans. We shouldnt want anything to do with @WOG_CJLeslie. Let UK have him. He is a headcase. Go WOLFPACK 1:15 PM Apr 19th via Echofon

    Later, Julius Hodge:

    Follow24Hodge

Juss got out the gym with CJL.. That kid is R.O.T.Y in the ACC, SEC or the NBA!! And he fits in with “our” guys so nicely!

Finally, CJL posted an hour ago:

Coach lowe didn’t come uconn did. about 1 hour ago via Echofon

Read the tea leaves there all you like.

Anyone think we might hear about a lack of guard depth being a problem next year or the year after?

  11. packbackr04 04/21/2010 at 1:33 PM #

alpha^ i dont do tweetsties or whatever.

so some nut says we dont want CJ thats hes a headcase?
then Hodge says he fits in well
then CJ says UCONN came last night and not State?

    do i have that right?

  12. packbackr04 04/21/2010 at 1:34 PM #

i dont know what CJ has to do with Mays playing time. Could this be more about news that Brown has finally qualified and will be getting Mays’ minutes?

  13. Thinkpack17 04/21/2010 at 1:38 PM #

“Anyone think we might hear about a lack of guard depth being a problem next year or the year after?”

I assume this is a question about who backs up Harrow 2 years from now. Lo Brown can handle that. 3 or 4 guard Rotation over the PG/SG spot. Never have Lo Brown and Harrow out of the game at the same time.

  14. Thinkpack17 04/21/2010 at 1:41 PM #

“i dont know what CJ has to do with Mays playing time.”

If somehow CJL WERE to come that would free up Scott Wood to spend more time at the 2 spot. Pushing Mays down to 3rd on the depth chart at both the PG and SG positions.

  15. Alpha Wolf 04/21/2010 at 2:15 PM #

04, that is what it sounds like. Who knows, CJL is a young man making a huge decision and his mind probably goes back and forth more than we can realize.

  16. Rochester 04/21/2010 at 2:28 PM #

If these kids factor a random idiot post into their decisions maybe we should all jump on the Kentucky sites and post about how we don’t want CJ Leslie at our beloved Kentucky and wish he’d keep his sorry butt in Raleigh.

  17. Defenestrate 04/21/2010 at 2:35 PM #

@wolfpackncst has to be an opposing fan of some sort. how many real pack fans say NCST instead of NCSU anyway?

  18. nycfan 04/21/2010 at 2:39 PM #

Maybe this is just a sign that (a) Brown has qualified (otherwise I would think Lowe & Co would fight tooth and nail to keep Mays around) and (b) Mays reads the tea leaves and sees limited playing time in his immediate future.

  19. Alpha Wolf 04/21/2010 at 2:57 PM #

“how many real pack fans say NCST instead of NCSU anyway?”

    NONE

It’s a sign of Sid upgrading our overall talent level. When he got JM, he got what he could. Now he’s more selective and bringing in a higher quality of player. Last year’s class was clearly better than the year before, this year’s class is better still.

Guys like Big Lew, Mays, T-Ferg, and Simon Harris get left behind and have to transfer to play at all.

Sid’s headed in the right direction as far as recruiting.

  21. VladsCross 04/21/2010 at 3:30 PM #

**CJ** It is my most humble and sincere hope, that you will not allow the likes of some Kentucky fan on the down low, convince you that you are not wanted by your friends, family, and fans in Raleigh, NC. Have no doubt, your services are needed and desired. I’m not one of those money supporters of NCSU Athletics. I do not have the financial stability to purchase season seats and make every pig pikin’ that the WPC throws. However, I love what NC State is to this community and I know without the slightest of doubts, that you along with the incoming class of recruits can and will make the Wolfpack a feared name throughout basktball circles again. I hope you will read this. Twitter: @Out_OnALimb

is anyone hearing Mabry might commit soon? does he have an offer?

  23. ADVENTUROO 04/21/2010 at 5:29 PM #

I remember following the blog in the FSU Road game. It was Mays that got the ball to Woods….not the other guards.

It was also Mays that hit critical FT’s down the stretch.

That blog, that night was howling for Sid to pull Mays….then it just went away and then they were Mays fans for life…

I watched every home game from the stands and all the road games that were televised and listened to the rest.

Julius was GOOD, when he was ON…and BAD when he was off. Sid could almost tell, in the first 30 seconds whether to leave him in or now.

I think we will miss Mays MORE than most folks think….but, we shall see….

If you go back (where are all you statisticians) and look at the games where he got significant PT, I think that he was a “force”….but that is just my recollection.

Sure would like to see some REAL facts on this….

Wish he would stay…but if he has “already left the building….”, then I wish him well.

  24. VaWolf82 04/21/2010 at 5:31 PM #

When he got JM, he got what he could.

There’s a new spin on the facts. JM committed in October of his junior year in high school.

Last year’s class was clearly better than the year before, this year’s class is better still.

    How is 2011 recruiting going?

  25. FunPack 04/21/2010 at 6:36 PM #

I really hope JM will stay. He can be valuable to the team. But if he decides to leave then I’ll wish him well. He seems like a solid guy and a hard worker.
