Sweet Sixteen Preview

After a first two rounds that matched the drama of any in recent history, we are but 48 hours away from Sweet Sixteen play. I don’t know if it’s ideal for ratings, but the most rabid sports fan couldn’t have scripted it any better. You have elite, “blue blood” programs (Kentucky, Duke, Syracuse, Michigan State), a good mix of major conference up and comers (Tennessee, Kansas State, West Virginia), and perhaps the strongest batch of mid-major upstarts ever (Butler, Northern Iowa, Cornell, and St. Mary’s). In short, it’s perfect TV drama for the college hoops junkie.

Midwest Regional:

Northern Iowa’s stunning upset of Kansas, combined with a devastating injury to Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas have blown this quadrant of the bracket wide open. Anything could happen at this point. Michigan State could rally around their fallen teammate, and Northern Iowa could have a bit of a hangover to shake off. That said, I think the Panthers charge into the Elite Eight. I think they would likely beat Tennessee (which could easily stop Ohio State), but in the end, I think the best player in the region – Evan Turner – pulls the Buckeyes across the finish line in two very close games.

BJD’s Pick: Ohio State

West Regional:

Different coaches, same result. Doesn’t Xavier always seem to make the round of sixteen? Well, they’re back to face the tough, athletic Kansas State Wildcats. In the other semifinal, the Syracuse Orangemen (you can’t make me call them the Orange, damn it) looked like a runaway freight train in their first two wins, seemingly destined to face Kentucky in an incredible final. Butler has yet to play its best, but is still alive and kicking. They have enough skill to keep up with Syracuse offensively, and at least give them a good scare. In the end, though, the freight train’s momentum is enough to derail Kansas State for a trip to Indianapolis.

BJD’s Pick: Syracuse

East Regional:

If Kentucky is to be stopped, I think it will happen in regional play. Cornell has enough weapons to keep up in a track meet offensively, and enough size not to let UK bully them. Will the young Wildcats get frustrated and start to press against the best Ivy League team in at least 30 years? If so, they could easily lose. And that’s a credit to Cornell – in any non-UK/Syracuse region, I’d pick them to make it to Indy. West Virginia is the kind of athletic, defensive-minded team that could bruise the Wildcats a bit, keeping the game close and disrupting UK’s preferred up-tempo style. Again, this could make a young team press a bit. Still, UK has been punched in the mouth before, and has always found an answer. I haven’t discuss the hot Washington Huskies yet. They could certainly score too much for WVU to keep up, but even if they did, Kentucky would massacre them. Punch a ticket for the Shadow Pack!

BJD’s Pick: Kentucky

South Regional:

Duke couldn’t have asked for a better draw. No #2 seed Villanova (past Blue Devil nemesis and tough matchup). No #5 Texas A&M with a raucous homecourt advantage in Houston. Duke should breeze past a depleted Purdue squad, which has to be happy just to make it this far. Although Baylor will also like playing in Houston, they don’t have the giant, rabid fanbase that Texas or Texas A&M would bring. So, I think Blue Devil fans want to fade the Cinderella St. Mary’s Gaels. In my view, the Gaels are the best team in the region when they are on (as they have been all three times I’ve watched them play). And I can’t pick a Final Four that’s all chalk, especially with a mid-major field this strong. I think they will have a tougher matchup with Baylor’s athleticism than Duke’s solid overall game – but I think they pull out both games by the skin of their teeth. As in the Midwest, I’m backing the region’s best individual player, throwback center Omar Samhan.

BJD’s Pick: St. Mary’s

I look forward to following the action with the SFN community!

I agree about the mix of teams (traditional powers, up-and-comers, and mid-majors). It’s fun to watch and root for the underdog mid-major against the top teams. However, I’d be interested to see what happens if there were a Cornell vs. St. Mary’s Final Four match-up. Would it still be interesting to see those teams that deep in the tournament? Do people like to watch David vs. David match-ups or do those teams best play their role when they have a Goliath to face?
It may all be moot, of course. Kentucky looks good.

i’m pulling for underdogs across the board. hopefully kentucky falls hard before the final four. i’m all for a david vs. david matchup. but i would also like to see wvu push all the way through.

    Nice analysis. 🙂

But… you say you can’t go “all chalk”, so you pick DUKE to be the one to not make it? When they’re in the easiest bracket?

I disagree. I think Duke has a cakewalk to the Final Four. Baylor is probably their only real challenger left in the entire bracket, and I’m sorry. I don’t see Duke losing to Baylor. Duke is playing some solid ball now, and they have one of the great tournament coaches leading the way. I certainly don’t see Duke losing to St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s beat a reeling Villanova team that should have lost to some guy named Bob Morris in the first round. I’m not ready to crown them world-beaters just yet.

I think someone might sneak up on Kentucky, though. They have young guards, even if they’re great. Teams with freshman guards don’t typically roll to the final four. I think at some point, the pressure might just get to them. I’m not sure if Cornell will do it. But it could happen.

I agree that Duke has the easiest road, but unfortunately for Butler and Cornell – they are in “freight train” brackets with Cuse and UK. I think Duke and Ohio State are about equal, but St. Mary’s is a tad better than UNI (because of the dominant lowpost player). So I say that Ohio State barely wins, and Duke barely loses.

Nobody beats Cuse or UK except themselves or each other. That would bum me out because I love rooting for underdogs, but should be one insanely watchable final.

This year’s Sweet 16 is beginning to look a lot like 1996. Kentucky won by margins of 38, 24, 31, 20 (Tim Duncan & Wake Forest), 7 vs UMass and 9 vs Syracuse in the ’96 title game. The ‘Cats have already blasted Wake and I think they’ll face an undermanned but game Syracuse squad, much like the one in ’96.

I don’t think Duke has a cakewalk to the Final Four, but to me they are clearly the best team in their region when they’re playing well, which they are doing right now. If anyone in this region is going to beat Duke, it’s Baylor. St. Mary’s is the best of the underdog teams so far, but they’re going to have their hands full with the Bears. I think BU is right now the most underestimated team in the Sweet 16.

The East has Kentucky, maybe the most talented team since the Elton Brand Duke team or the John Wooden UCLA teams. I’d rather see anyone but Kentucky win, even Bob Huggins, but I doubt that’ll happen.

I also agree with BJD in that Syracuse will win the West. I really believe K-State has better personnel, but they don’t have Jim Boeheim, the difference.

The Midwest could be this year’s George Mason bracket. But I’ll reluctantly go with OSU as well.

In the Final Four, I see UK getting by Duke by about 7, and Syracuse beating OSU. The title game will be exciting but will be UK by 9. History has a way of repeating itself.

Oh man, isn’t this why we tune into March Madness… we got upsets all over the place but in the West Bracket, Syracuse and Kansas State the number one and two seeds both were able to get to the sweet 16. To add to that Butler and Xavier got there and they are no team to take lightly. I am sure I am not the only one who waits all year to see basketball played at this caliber. Any team could honestly go on in this bracket to the Elite Eight.

If you are as confused as I am, and most people for that matter on who to take going into the Eight Eight and Final Four, you might want to check out this write up @ http://www.lionsdenu.com/march-madness-2010-sweet-16-west-bracket-syr-vs-but-xav-vs-ksu/ … it has full in depth write-ups on all sixteen teams as well as predictions for all eight games in the sweet sixteen round.

So who you got in the West Bracket? I have to take the favourites in Syracuse and Kansas State, they are simply playing the best basketball out of any team in the bracket… But anything is possible, especially this year!!!

Cool quiz.. I thought more people would be pulling for Duke but it looks to be a majority. The people on DBR have a lot of respect for NC State and I would consider myself a Duke “fan” to some degree. Anything that UNC hates as much as Duke, I find myself liking.. They’re pretty epileptic right now about the possibility of Duke winning the whole thing.

    Final Four:
Ohio State, Xavier (my “surprise” pick- they’re due), Kentucky, Duke
Kentucky vs. Duke should have been the NC game.. if it happens that will be a great matchup. Duke’s D vs. the mercs O. My initial reaction is to pick UK, but my gut is telling me otherwise. Although they had some ups and downs, this Duke team is different; not dominant, but different – they have a legit shot at a championship.

I’m surprised at the St. Marys pick.. they have a real squad and play great basketball but they don’t matchup with Duke well. Duke has a solid inside presence and takes care of the ball well, plus have the speed and athletecism to overwelm the Gaels. On a normal day, they should beat them by about 8.

I want to add one more nugget. If teams like Tennessee and Kansas State can have such great years and be Final Four contenders, why can’t NC State? The same NC State with 2 NCs, 3 Final Fours, Great facilities, rabid fanbase, awesome conference affiliation, Jimmy V, David Thompson, etc.

Also, Hewitt to St. Johns is interesting. I think Ga Tech is a sleeping giant with a really underrated bball tradition.

I think the best Sweet 16 games will be Washington-WVU and Ohio State-Tennessee. Washington has won something like 9 in a row and has lots of confidence. With the injury to Bryant, a big weapon, although sometimes a TO happy weapon is lost and it will make WVU more beatable in this game. Mazulla (sp?) is a veteran and should step up as he has played on this stage before and played well. This game goes to OT in my opinion with WVU squeaking out a 2 point win.

The OSU-UT game is a game not getting a lot of publicity nationally but should be. The best player in the country plays for OSU. Honestly, this region is the Buckeyes for the taking. They play only 5 1/2 people it seems like. 4 starters AVERAGE over 36 minutes a game. They survived Georgia Tech’s depth, although it didn’t hurt that 4 Tech starters had 2 fouls each in the first 6 minutes of the game. I thought that only happened at State. The fact that Tennessee is even in the Sweet 16 this year is astonishing considering all of the issues they have been through this year. From the loss of a key reserve before the year due to a heart defect that caused him to have cardiac arrest (thankfully he is still alive and a part of the team, but unable to ever play again) to a part-time starter leaving(or suspended…not sure how this played out) to be home with his ailing mom to the well documented new year’s day arrest of 4 players, which wound up kicking off the best player on the team (Tyler Smith), and the suspension of the other 3 for 5 to 10 games, this team has been through a lot. The Vols have a lot of motivation to win this game. 3 years ago, they blew a 18 point halftime lead in the Sweet 16 to Ohio State (with Greg Oden and company). If the Vols win, it will be their first ever appearance in the Elite 8. Wayne Chism has said he wants revenge on the Buckeyes.

I think that motivation is the determining factor. UT by 3.

I think we have this Elite 8:

    Northern Iowa vs Tennessee
    Syracuse vs K-State
    Kentucky vs WVU
    Duke vs Baylor

    Final 4:

    Tennessee
    Syracuse
    Kentucky
    Duke

Final (easily the best two teams that are left)

    Syracuse
    Kentucky

    Champ

    Kentucky

    “They’re pretty epileptic right now”
    You mean apoplectic?

^I think either term is appropriate, but I could be wrong. Either way, they’re shuddering at the idea of K having 4 titles and winning one while they’re still trying to bask in the glow of 2009. I would trade places with them. Unfortunately, I’m 23 and have never had the oppurtunity to see State win anything other than a Sweet Sixteen appearance.
