Random Day One NCAAT Observations (and Looking Ahead)

First, of all – let me state the obvious, in a poorly done Comic Book Guy voice: Best. First Day. Ever! (We aren’t the only people that hold this opinion.)

Those of you who’ve been reading my drivel for any length of time know that I absolutely loathe blaming losses on officiating. It’s typically the last refuge of the delusional homer. But there are times that even I must make an exception, such as the timing error that gave Duke an undeserved home win over Clemson a few years back (sorry, know I blogged about it but can’t find the link). And yesterday, the zebras blatantly saved Villanova from a humiliating loss to some guy named Bob Morris. The Wildcats couldn’t score from the field, so the refs decided to blow the whistle on virtually every shot attempt during the last 4 minutes. Even when Bob’s defenders stood motionless, arms in the air…blocking foul. In a tie game, Bob’s coach ditched his jacket and ran halfway down the tunnel he was so pissed. And the zebras must have known he was right, since they didn’t T him up. Shameful.

Every year, I submit two brackets in my office pool. The second is very upset-heavy. In my “craziness” bracket, I put BYU in the Final Four. Despite needing 2OT to dispatch the pesky Florida Gators yesterday, I feel very good about my Stormin’ Mormon dark horse pick. That Jimmer Fredette guy is even better than advertised (probably the best player I’ve seen all year). They also got great play from a second guard, and something one doesn’t imagine when one thinks of BYU – a black guy with a semi-mohawk. Gotta love that. And if BYU gets past a K State team I have no faith in, they play the regionals in freaking Salt Lake City – where the best teams they could possibly face are Syracuse, Pitt, and Butler. Ka-ching.

NC State would no doubt be better with Chris Wright, but his Hoyas imploded last year and lost in embarrassing fashion to a 7-9 MAC team (Ohio Bobcats) last night. And that’s with a handful of NBA players in his supporting cast. A panacea he is not.

Murray State beat Vandy with a great last-second shot, in a match-up between two teams Pack fans remember for very painful NCAAT daggers. Thank God the announcers can stop referencing the fact that the Racers had only won one NCAAT game in their history (against the Shackleford “led” Wolfpack in 1988 – the only NC State NCAAT game that I’ve attended live). It did come up about 15-20 times in the last minute of the Vandy game, though.

Wake Forest beat Texas last night in perhaps the most exciting terrible game I’ve ever seen. Both teams tried to give the game away with impunity, and the Longhorns finally succeeded. It’s been a very odd year, with three of the very best coaches in the game (Barnes, Calhoun, and of course, Roy) turning in perhaps the worst coaching performance of their careers. Wake’s reward is getting pounded like a veal by Kentucky on Saturday. Bring the K-Y tomorrow, Dino.

Speaking of Kentucky, I am watching their tourney run as if they are the “Shadow Pack.” Yes, I know that Cal 99% likely would have left State for UK anyway. But he was my dream coach during the last search, and State recruited Wall and Cousins heavily. So, there’s still enough of a nexus for me to dream. I’m sure we would have at least had one team like this during Cal’s imagined tenure on Tobacco Road, and we would at least have some memories of glory that aren’t old enough to vote.

Don’t forget that Time Warner Cable and WRAL are showing HD feeds of EVERY GAME on channels 1051-1054. They deserve all the free publicity they can get for this very vital community service. That means us locals don’t have to watch Duke-Pine Bluff tonight. Thank God.

Speaking of Duke – is it just me, or is everyone having a hard time hating Duke this year? None of their players have that quintesential Duke smariness/whininess, and they even play actual defense instead of just falling down all game. Coach K is reminding us of how well he is capable of actual coaching (and not just bitching about everything). If they bring home the hardware, I will be able to be happy for my Duke friends. And that makes me more than a bit nauseous.

Put in a larger context, Caulton Tudor has a great column this morning, explaining why the 5 non-Duke ACC teams are doomed. Duke’s the only game in town for the ACC, as has been apparent since late January.

For a little more focus and conversation regarding the performance of individual conferences in the post season then you should click here. Enjoy the games, everyone!

Hemmingway couldn’t have written better prose than that! I spent all day yesterday cussing TWC for not showing all the games like they had in the past…if only I had looked harder.

  3. ruffles31 03/19/2010 at 10:45 AM #

As much as I despise TWC, this is the one redeeming quality they profess. I love having all 4 games in HD. And the best part is they have been doing this for at least 8 years. Fantastic.

As far as the basketball goes, it was a great day.

First off, growing up a UT fan, glad to see them avoid the upset bug. I would much rather take my chances against Ohio than Georgetown.

Great games all day. BYU-Florida, Murray State-Vandy, Wake-Texas, Nova-RM, Ohio-Georgetown, Washington-Marquette, where do I stop. Heck, even Montana gave New Mexico a scare with Montana’s best player missing his first 11 shots and shooting 1-12.

Hope today is half as good.

I believe Villanova got the calls, because if they lose, there is no one left in that bracket to challenge Duke. I believe CBS and the NCAA want a Duke-Villanova matchup. Sadly, it’s all about money, not fairness. One day I hope a whistleblower shows up to prove that many games are rigged. I believe a lot of these things are. I believe Duke got the easiest bracket because CBS and the NCAA are partners, and they know that Duke being in the tournament is a big draw, for Duke fans and Duke haters.

I believe the Heels got invited into the NIT (and given a 4-seed, no less!) for similar reasons. These tournaments are about collegiate sports, but they are also about money. The NIT loves touting that they have the defending national champion in their little dance. Let’s be honest. There are probably a lot more people watching the NIT besides the fans of the schools that are participating, because Carolina is there. It’s not right, but money drives things. And that’s what this is all about.

At some point, I will accept these thoughts as absolute facts and just stop watching. I’m still clinging to hope that I’m wrong, however small that hope is.

cal wouldn’t do well in the ACC. there is no telling what he did to get those recruits. cal + kyjelly= perfect for each other. he would screw our program and leave us to deal with his mess e.g. memphis.

When I say “rigged,” I mean certain teams being given the absolute benefit of the doubt. If there is any contact at all, the call will go toward the team being “helped”. Of course, that team still has to hit shots and whatnot, so it’s not a “perfect” rigging. It just greatly benefits them. I think Carolina and Duke have been the beneficiary of such rigged games for years.

  7. rtpack24 03/19/2010 at 11:20 AM #

If Cal had of come to Raleigh he would already be gone and the only memories we would have had are NCAA sanctions.

  8. RickJ 03/19/2010 at 11:28 AM #

Did anyone notice Jai Lucas last night for Texas? Hard to believe anyone ever cared where he ended up in college.

  9. BJD95 03/19/2010 at 11:43 AM #

If you’re gonna cheat, you might as well be good at it!

But that was only a minor point anyway. Let’s keep the focus on this great tournament. If the chatter is to be believed, might be the last dance before greed kills the golden goose.

  10. flanders 03/19/2010 at 11:59 AM #

that villanova game was one of THE most disappointing officiating displays i’ve seen in a long time. i’m just glad someone else noticed it. could you imagine the implosion of the big east if they would have lost???

  11. flanders 03/19/2010 at 12:02 PM #

I also got a good history lesson on Sam Houston and Bob Morris. Pretty interesting guys!

  12. PackerInRussia 03/19/2010 at 12:06 PM #

In the Triad, I don’t have the same TWC channels (maybe I just don’t have the right package?). They do have another game on channel 522 and 590 shows coverage with some live look-ins.

  13. PackerInRussia 03/19/2010 at 12:16 PM #

So far WVU is continuing the Day One trend. The Big East is hurting my bracket. I didn’t have all of their teams winning, but I didn’t have them all losing (and I had Georgetown going far). WVU losing will officially render my bracket a pile of crap.

  14. BJD95 03/19/2010 at 12:20 PM #

Morgan State up 14-5 early. Gus Johnson is announcing. I am most intrigued.

  15. blackdom 03/19/2010 at 12:44 PM #

Gus does not announce he yells! Nova was given a gift there was no way they should have gotten into OT let alone win the damn game .
bradleyb are you really Oliver Stone with your theories?

  16. Noah 03/19/2010 at 12:52 PM #

I have to agree with Jay Bilas…the NCAA tournament field is awful. There are maybe four good teams in it. The rest are just a mishmash of players. They could swap jerseys at halftime and no one would ever know.

The last couple of minutes of each game have been reasonably entertaining, but you gotta slog through 38 minutes of poo to get there.

  17. packalum44 03/19/2010 at 12:58 PM #

Good think Wake Forest won or they’d be feeling extra raw, they got f***ed by the officials too but without any KY.

  18. ruffles31 03/19/2010 at 1:02 PM #

Another pro-Duke conspiracy theory for validating CBS wants them to win. This is the 4th straight year that Jim Nantz/Billy Packer(Clark Kellogg) are announcing their pod. The last 3 years, Nantz and Packer/Kellogg wound up doing the regional that Duke was/supposed to be in.

  19. Prowling Woofie 03/19/2010 at 1:14 PM #

WVU pulls big swing – apparently with the aide of some questionable officiating. Imagine that ??? Up by 14 or so at the beginning of 2nd half.

NCAA afraid of losing it’s market if the Big Least is eliminated ?

  20. MrPlywood 03/19/2010 at 1:21 PM #

In my upset bracket I took St Mary’s, Washington, N. Iowa (not much of an upset if any), and Murray St. I also have Cornell and Siena. Dare to dream.

  21. BJD95 03/19/2010 at 2:01 PM #

Cornell looks pretty damned awesome. Xavier/Minny is ugly slop.

  22. phunisher 03/19/2010 at 2:17 PM #

If you want to know how to get instant confidence, just dunk on Lebron James. Jordan Crawford, younger brother of Jamal, did just that this summer and man that kid can play. CJ, now its your turn.

  23. PackerInRussia 03/19/2010 at 2:23 PM #

^^^I heard someone on ESPN say that Bilas picked Cornell to go to the Elite 8, so he must really believe that. Can’t say I blame him.

Steve Lavin talked about Texas’ lack of success being a result of Rick Barnes’ failure to manage egos, describing Texas’ team as a deep, talented team full of prima donas who have been given the royal treatment throughout middle school and high school and each kid has his own group of people behind him with a vested interest in seeing him get a lot of playtime/exposure.
The mark of a good coach in the era of one-and-dones: Successfully manages egos of one-year talented players OR recruits solid, but less-hyped 3-4 year players with a splash of high talent mixed in?

  24. Rick 03/19/2010 at 2:46 PM #

“I have to agree with Jay Bilas…the NCAA tournament field is awful. ”

College bball in general is going downhill fast. It is starting to remind me of NBA basketball. That ugly bump and grind crap.

They need to start calling all hand checks and illegal picks. That would make the game much easier to watch.

  25. Rick 03/19/2010 at 2:47 PM #

“Texas’ team as a deep, talented team full of prima donas who have been given the royal

This is another concern I have with Lowe. If an experienced coach like RB has problems, Lowe (who failed at this massively the last time he had a top recruit) could really struggle.
