NCSU basketball by the numbers

I compiled statistics from several years to get an idea how this years team is doing compared to previous teams. I have also included numbers from the middle of the current year so we can see how ACC play changes the numbers. For fun, I added Sendek’s last year just to see how they compare.

I wanted to know if we are seeing any improvement from the basketball team. I am not going to give a lot of commentary as I hope there will be some discussion on these numbers and what they mean.

I’m not saying I am absolutely in love with everything Coach Lowe has done thus far, but I am saying that to compare Coach Sendek’s 10th season to Coach Lowe’s 4th season seems like comparing Apples to Oranges. Why don’t we compare records thru 4 seasons and see if there is a big difference? Why not compare the recruiting thru 4 seasons? Why not compare number of wins by each coach against Duke, UNC, Wake Forest thru 4 seasons? I am not saying that Coach Lowe has proven he can bore another team to sleep and win consistently against lesser talent like Coach Sendek did, but Iam saying he has thus far been able to attract far better talent. If given 5 to 6 season to really get his stuff together like Coach Sendek was given, Coach Lowe just might turn out to be OK. For you fans with short memories, look up how many times we reached the NCAA Tourney Coach Sendek’s first 4 seasons.

I can honestly say some of the people in here need a reality check. Maybe you need to read a couple more books on basketball, attend a couple basketball clinics, or go out and coach a YMCA team.

I am a Packfan as much as the next guy. I want success like everyone in here, but if we look at all the games that our Pack have been successful, there are many stats out there. Stats can be used to make arguments to fire Lowe, keep him, fire Towe, ….etc. But the one stat that has equaled good basketball has been point guard play. That is the MOST important position on the court. Every successful team has a reliable one. At times Javi has looked great, at times Mays has looked great, but they have been inconsistent which has lead to many hardaches on offense. When we made our 2007 tourny ( I was there all 4 games) run how solid was Atsur. Yes Costner played great but Atsur was reliable. When we made the run in 1997 (I was in Greensboro for all 4 games) Gainey was a Rock!!

I have been coaching Middle school through high school basketball for 13 years & if any of you can produce a winning team without a reliable point guard please send me the film. I will take you out to dinner!! You guys that complain about Lowe show how ignorant you are about the game of basketball. You go by numbers and stats but write me and tell me how many times you have gone to coaching clinics. Just so you know I have heard some of the greatest coaches speak in person and listen to their ideas about basketball. ( Coach K, Bobby Knight, Billy Donovan, Coach Yow, Pat Summit)

We need a reliable point guard, will RH be that guy it certainly has the potential, but I do know State has looked great when Mays & Javi are reliable. Look at UNC, Drew has not been reliable, is Roy really a horrible coach? Or is winning extremely difficult without solid point guard play?

In a recent comment to another article I stated how important PG play is to a bball teams success. That is my opinion but very few people who know the game would argue. The PG is the person in control of the offense and spends the most time handling the ball. If a PG isn’t able to handle and distribute the ball it is hard for any other team member to reach their full potential during the game.

Roy is not a horrible coach but he isn’t The Almighty Coach either. He walked into one in 2005 and how hard could recruiting be after winning a title? He obviously couldnt win with his talent at Kansas. If Roy was the coach everyone thinks he is he wouldn’t being experiencing the “earthquake” that is going on in CH right now. I mean he does have a bazillion All Americans, right?

Our PGs spend much of their time trying to run the O from 5 plus ft. beyond the 3pt line.

please understand my statement was to people that look at Lowe and judge his coaching skills on wins & loses. If we had the greatest talent and we were 3-10 in the ACC, then I can see the disgruntled fan being irate for the teams lack of success. Reality is, Lowe has had an unlucky situation at State. When Herb left, that was the end of Simmons & Brackman, while losing two of Herbs recruits. That team played well down the stretch w/ Atsur running the point bug inconsistent. When he was out with his injury. The following year we recruit a beast in Hickson, but this created some issues on the team. Why, with Who we have ideas but nothing for sure. Javi was still a freshmen and his play was horrible at times and good other times. Last year once again our point guard play was inconsistent, just like this year. When Javi & Mays are on we run smooth, when they don’t we struggle.

Roy may not be the almighty coach but he is a great one. You can make the arguments about All-Americans but to say he never won at Kansas is ludicrous. Ok so he never won a title at KU, but why doesn’t Coack K have more than 3 in more than 20 years of coaching at Duke, the reason is it is so difficult to win a title….Period!! Look at Calipari, how many titles….0, but everyone thinks he is a great coach. He has has outstanding point guards which helped his team have success. We need a reliable point guard and the wins will come. Even my mother who is not the athletic type will call me during a game and ask me what are they ( JavI & Julius) doing out there. I think will be great backups to Ryan, but right now our success is on their backs & hopefully today against Miami he plays a solid game and limited bonehead mistakes.

” Stats can be used to make arguments to fire Lowe, keep him, fire Towe”

I did not “say” anything with the stats. I put them all out there.
They are awful and that cannot be argued.

I agree the stars are horrible. Players put stats on the board, and I still think that our offensive stats will improve with reliable point guard play and a scorer at the 2 spot.
