NCSU basketball by the numbers

I compiled statistics from several years to get an idea how this years team is doing compared to previous teams. I have also included numbers from the middle of the current year so we can see how ACC play changes the numbers. For fun, I added Sendek’s last year just to see how they compare.

I wanted to know if we are seeing any improvement from the basketball team. I am not going to give a lot of commentary as I hope there will be some discussion on these numbers and what they mean.

    Jeremy,
I don’t think it means we should be good just that we should finish better.

  2. D_Medlin 02/24/2010 at 12:21 PM #

Never have understood the ACC is down argument either. That doesn’t change anything about NC State’s roster or where the Pack should finish. State was still picked 12th, even in a “down year.”

    D,
In my mind when the ACC down, it is a great opportunity for a school that is not Duke or UNC to win a championship. Cuz, let’s be honest, when they say the ACC is down it usually means one or both of those two.

“He is bigger than Chris Paul and similar to both Justin Gainey”

I don’t think so. It looks like he weighs 7 lbs less than Paul…and having seen both of them – it appears that Harrow’s frame is slighter than Gainey’s or Paul’s. (Neither Gainey nor Paul struck me as skinny, Harrow does strik me as skinny. Maybe he has longer arms – which is not a bad thing.)

Kenny Anderson was skinny – but he played in a slightly different era.

These things can change in a year or so…when I went to college I weighed 145 lbs at the most…I was probably 165 at the end of my freshman year.

I do think Harrow’s weight will be a factor…but more on defense than offense. On offense, if he can shake out of the handchecks, he should be fine. On D though – he’ll probably be bounced off the ball a lot easier than he’s used to. Still, I think there’s a really good chance he’s a significant at the position and I’m excited about the prospect of seeing him in a wolfpack uniform.

Hodge was skinny as a rail his freshman year and didn’t hurt him too much.

Jeremy – if the conference is down, you’d think a coach in his 4th year would be able to win more than 4 games in a 16 game conference slate. (Especially if you only have to play the best team once.)

Now, if you finish in last place w/ a 6-10 or 7-9 record – hey, you’ve probably capitalized on your opportunity – it just didn’t show up in the standings. However, if you finish 4-12 in that league and finish last – well that says something, doesn’t it?

It’s simple math really. If I’m in a running event where a lot of elites aren’t running, I’ll finish pretty high in my Age group…if I’m in an event where a lot of them are – I won’t.

In theory – the worse your competition, the better you should do. You could also see how HWSBN is doing in the PAC-10 this year for an example of how you can have a good conference record when your conference sucks.

When discussing the weakness of this year’s ACC, you need to be clear on what your comparison point is. When compared to other conferences in the nation, the ACC is currently ranked 3rd which compares to a number of past seasons.

The worst ACC season in recent memory has to be 2000, when the ACC was ranked 7th…behind the other BCS conferences and the old C-USA. I discussed this in more detail earlier this year:

7 lbs less than Paul now or 7 lbs less than Paul when he played in HS?

In reference to the “we have the talent to finish better than 12th in the ACC”.

My statement earlier suggested that we are currently the only team in the ACC starting only one four star recruit (Tracy Smith). Here are the four and five star recruits starting for teams in the ACC not named UNC, Duke, Wake, and GT (don’t think anyone will argue about those four being more talented).

    NC State:

    Tracy Smith 4*

    Miami:

    Dwayne Collins 4*
    James Dews 4*
    Durand Scott 5*

    Maryland:

    Grieves Vasquez 4*
    Eric Hayes 4*
    Jordan Williams 4*
    Sean Mosley 4*

    Virginia Tech:

    Dorenzo Hudson 4*
    Malcolm Delaney 4*
    Jeff Allen 4*

    Virginia:

    Sylven Landesberg 4*
    Mike Scott 4*

**Calvin Baker, Jerome Meyinsse are both listed as 2* recruits and are in the starting lineup. While naming elite talent is helpful, it should also be noted when lesser than average talent is starting (assuming three stars is average)

    Boston College:

    Reggie Jackson 4*
    Rakim Sanders 4*
    Josh Southern 4*

    Clemson:

    Trevor Booker 4*
    Demontez Stitt 4*

    Florida State:

    Derwin Kitchen 4*
    Ryan Reid 4*
    Chris Singleton 5*
    Michael Snaer 5*
    Solomon Alabi 5*

This information was taken from scout.com. I determined the starting lineup of each team by looking at recent box scores. I did not look at more than one game to determine the starting lineup, so if you see a player that doesn’t belong, please let me know.

DU – when he played in high school.

  10. D_Medlin 02/24/2010 at 1:14 PM #

    Good point Rick.

Carolina gets more press for being bad than the No. 2 through No. 8 teams in the conference combined.

This week, for the first time in 32 years, the ACC has only one team in the Top 25. It should be noted for much of that time we had only 9 teams. We have 11 teams outside of the Top 25 this week for the first time ever. That is down to me.

As for what it means to NC State in particular, when you want to compare the achievement of this year’s 3-10 team against any other team in school history, you have to factor in that we are playing weaker competition and still sucking. We have not taken advantage of the rest of the league being down, because we’ve been even more down.

  13. VaWolf82 02/24/2010 at 1:29 PM #

So where do you draw your comparisons…top 25 ranking (which I don’t think has existed for 32 years), NCAAT invites, or something that looks at the whole conference from top to bottom?

In 2006, the ACC sent 4 of 12 teams to the NCAAT. This year, the ACC is on track to send 6 or 7 teams. Which year was weaker? The answer depends entirely on what you use as your measuring stick.

  14. JEOH2 02/24/2010 at 1:40 PM #

The idea that UNC will be significantly better next year is based purely off of history and assumption…yes they have a superb class coming in, but we all can see the problems they have this year is not talent but, looks more to be an issue of chemistry & motivation…losing Thompson, Ginyard and possibly Davis won’t help…

Next year, as fans, our expectations should be NCAA or bust…just like this year we have a right to be angry if we do not make the NIT (we still have a shot)…but there is no good reason we shouldn’t have…

  15. choppack1 02/24/2010 at 1:41 PM #

Rick – that is Chris Paul in the pros – not in high school.

  16. VaWolf82 02/24/2010 at 1:46 PM #

we have a right to be angry if we do not make the NIT (we still have a shot)

State has about as much chance of making the NIT as Jim Carrey had with Lauren Holley in Dumb & Dumber .

  17. Wulfpack 02/24/2010 at 1:48 PM #

UNC has been carrying the ACC torch ever since Roy arrived. They are having an antrocious year and, surprise, the ACC is having a bad year. Makes sense.

The conference has been spiraling downward. Last year’s tournament performance was downright embarrassing, and I’m afraid we are in store for much the same this year. It’s just bad all around. Some pretty good teams, yes, but nobody that will come close to winning it. The Big East has four, for example. Just not good, a dilluted product.

  18. JEOH2 02/24/2010 at 1:51 PM #

^^ Hahaha…Didn’t he get Lauren Holley by the end of the movie? 🙂

  19. wolfpackattack89 02/24/2010 at 1:52 PM #

    Nice hire Fowler.

  20. wolfpackattack89 02/24/2010 at 1:59 PM #

How do you guys think we’ll fare next year? I think the NCAAT is a ridiculously far reach. Would the NIT be enough to save Sidney’s job?

  21. VaWolf82 02/24/2010 at 2:00 PM #

Hahaha…Didn’t he get Lauren Holley by the end of the movie?

I don’t know, I’ve never watched more than five minutes. But he did get her in real life.

    EDIT

Wikipedia says that she was married and the two idiots wander off together at the end of the movie.

  22. packfan03 02/24/2010 at 2:05 PM #

I think it’s realistic for us to be on the proverbial “bubble” next year, and potentially make the tournament in the 7-10 seed range.

  23. Rick 02/24/2010 at 2:41 PM #

“The idea that UNC will be significantly better next year is based purely off of history and assumption”

YEs they have history of a good coach and success. Us not so much.
We are assuming we will get better because of two players

  24. choppack1 02/24/2010 at 3:01 PM #

OK – I went to kenpom since they keep #s from each year.

And here’s what I found out according to their rankings:

*This is actually the BEST the ACC has been in the last 5 years in terms of both average rankings and teams in the Top 25 and Top 75.
*2007 was the only year w/ more teams in the Top 50.

Here’s how the #s flush out.

    ………………06…..07…08….09….10
    Top 10……..2…….1…..2……1……1
    Top 15……..2…….2…..3……2……2
    Top 25……..3…….3…..3……4……6
    Top 50……..5…….9…..6……6……7
    Top 75……..8……10….9……9…..12

    Averages 52.7 38.9 48.7 50.1 37.8

  25. choppack1 02/24/2010 at 3:01 PM #
