Since we have only 2 games left, if we handle our business, even if Brokeback Hill wins out their last two games, aren’t we ahead of them because our overall record is better?

Brokeback Hill is at 4-10 conf. 15-14 overall
If they win their last two games they’re at 6-10 and 17-14

    We’re at 4-10 conf. 16-13 overall
If we win our last two games we’re at 6-10 and 18-13

So as long as we take care of our business, Brokeback Hill comes in last right?

An 18-13 record against our schedule this season isn’t nearly as good as the 17-14 record of UNC, considering who the 17-14 played and the fact they beat us twice by double digits.

We can’t compare ourselves to UNC basketball anymore because the only thing we have in common with them nowadays is geographic proximity and conference affiliation.

Thank you again, Lee Fowler, for your genius basketball insight. Not only do you have our fan base drooling whenever we beat the likes of a Miami, but you’ve also killed off what was once a rivalry State fans looked forward to with Carolina. Nowadays, for a State fan, having a Carolina b-ball game is like having a root canal. We dread it way in advance, we know going to get drilled, it’ll hurt, and the pain will linger.

And you have the audacity to state publically, like you did a few weeks ago, that the root canal was good for us and we can come back next year for more of the same Lowe expectations.

i don’t care if UNC winning prevents NCSU from being in 100th place in the ACC. I still want UNC to lose. LOSE BABY LOSE whatever the ramifications are

  4. Rochester 02/28/2010 at 12:59 PM #

Non-conference records have no bearing on conference standings. UNC owns the tie-breaker because they swept us. We own the tie-breaker against Miami because we beat them in our only game.

  5. HarrowpwnzU 02/28/2010 at 1:08 PM #

Then why do the ACC rankings have us listed ahead of them?

It wasn’t a rivalry for most of the 90s. Fowler certainly didn’t turn things around – but he also wasn’t the cause of this as you seem to imply.

You’re right, 03, Fowler may not have started this mess, but he seems damned determined to finish it.

harrowpwnzU I think the order of ranking for those standings you listed is conference schedule and then overall schedule. NCSU is ahead of UNC because NCSU has a better overall record. However, the seedings at the acc tournament is the only ranking that really matters and that only considers conference games. If two teams are tied in number of wins in the conference, then they look at who won the game or games between the two. If we are tied with UNC for number of loses and wins in the acc, then UNC would be seeded ahead of us because they beat us both times we met. Somewhere there is a list of these rules and how this works. At some point if the tie continues there is a coin toss. Say UNX conference schedule was 0-16 and Wake also was 0-16, then it would logically be decided by a coin toss. (note, because each team plays every other team at least once it is impossible for two teams to each have 0-16 records. Wake and UNC will have to play once and one team will have to win. So the example I gave is not possible)

Thank you 61Packer for injecting a little reality into the discussion. I can’t believe people are discussing whether we finish 12th, 11th, or 10th like that’s some accomplishment, how Sid out-coached the potential last place team, and how we really put it on Miami down the stretch. My god how we have lowered our expectations.

Here are tiebreaker rules from 2007. I wouldn’t think that they would have changed since then.

    http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/022607aaa.html

I can’t say whether or not these tie-breakers are also used to determine who is left out of the ACC/B-10 challenge.

  12. Wulfpack 02/28/2010 at 2:09 PM #

UNC’s got the head-to-head X 2. So the only way to be seeded higher than them is to finish with a better conference record.

We’ve got the head-to-head over Miami, so we essentially have a one game lead over them. The BC game looms large as well.

We’re catching VT at a VERY bad time. They’ve got to win a few more to ensure a tourney bid.

The teams I’d want to avoid in the ACC tournament are 1) Duke, 2) Maryland and 3) UNC. Everybody else I think we have a decent shot against.

As for NIT seeding, pay very close attention to the conference tournaments. The talking heads are already saying that we’re going to see more mid-majors earn bids to the dance this year. If any of the favorites bow out of conference tournaments making way for a crap team to earn an automatic bid, that knocks somebody on the bubble out.

We’re essentially battling the likes of VT, Clemson, GT, UVA, BC, UNC and Miami for NIT consideration. I serioulsy doubt they’d take more than 4 ACC teams, so the pecking order will matter.

“You’re right, 03, Fowler may not have started this mess, but he seems damned determined to finish it.”

And I think we can all appreciate determination.

“Hewitt isn’t that bad a coach, and he’s a pretty good recruiter. Hamilton is doing pretty well at FSU lately, and the Sems should make it to the Dance.”

Hewitt is a horrendously bad coach. It’s pretty much now common knowledge that he gets the LEAST out of his players than any other coach in the ACC. He is a fantastic recruiter. How, I don’t know. The man sucks as a basketball coach and is jeopardy of losing his job.

Hamilton likewise brings in some prett good talent as the figurehead. But he hardly ever “coaches”. The true “coach” at FSU is Associate head coahd Stan Jones. Just watch the FSU huddles closely and you will see exactly what I am talking about.

Haith is also disapointing. He’s having a couple of hirrible years back to back. Glad we looked elsewhere.

If I had to rate “coaching”, it would go:

    1. Coach K
    2. Gary Williams
    3. Seth Greenburg
    4. Oliver Ournell
    5. Al Skinner

It falls off significantly from there, which is a big part of why the ACC is in the position that it is in. I also did not inlcude Tony Bennett in that list because there really isn’t a lot of data yet on him. They’ve been better than last year, but have taken a nose dive. Just not a whole lot of talent there.

I am not “drooling at beating the likes of Miami.” The fact is that we played Miami on the road yesterday, and the players and coaches put forth a good effort and won at Miami. We can hash and rehash about the +’s and -‘s of the AD and the coach forever, but Sid is our coach and the Pack is our team, and they deserve to be congratulated for a good job and a road win just as they deserve to be cricized for a poor effort and a bad loss.

Again, I want the new chancellor to evaluate Fowler’s performance quickly and decide if he deserves to stay. If he is ousted, then I want us to hire an AD with integrity and experience and a love for and dedication to Wolfpack athletics. The new AD should then evaluate Sid’s performance quickly and decide if he deserves to stay. This will more than likely take another season, but Harrow, Brown and hopefully Cothran and Leslie will have played one season and we will have committments in place for the following season and can move on with or without Sid.

Thank you Tracy for announcing that you are staying for your senior season and your degree, and I am very happy that you just knocked knees with a Miami player and did not tear your ACL or suffer some other catastrophic injury on that play.

    GO PACK!

For those cynics, I think folks are looking at the standings to see what our possible draw is for the ACC tournament. A strong finish might set us up for a strong run. But I agree that if we run into Maryland in the first round we are done.

  17. Thinkpack17 02/28/2010 at 2:35 PM #

The fact that we clearly drawn, recognized lines in the sand between our fanbase is kind of sad.

    1. My boy Dennis Horner is a hatchet, he cannot attempt a block without fouling.
    2. If Hewitt were to be fired we would lose out on having one coach in the league that is clearly a worse coach than Sid, but I think we would gain a lot of ground in ATL recruiting…I’d rather see him go.
    3. I think Maryland has all but assured themselves a first round bye. We wouldn’t see them until the quarters.

After reading through all these posts one thing has become clear to me. The bar most of you people set for our basketball team is ridiculously low. Our program is at one of its lowest lows ever. At least we had optimism when Les Robinson was at the helm. I was one who wanted more than ever for Lowe to succeed but there have been runs at the end of seasons like this before that raise expectations which are only crushed in the next season. Lowe will never make it at NCSU. He was a last resort for a coach. I like the man and wish it wasn’t he who was in this spot but it is time to start over (again). Someone can bring us back to winning. We just have to find that person.

I highly doubt that Hewitt is going anywhere. He basically has a contract for life with GT given the way it is rumored to have been written (with automatic roll overs and a huge buy out). Short of doing something that would get him in trouble with the police, he’s there as long as he wants to be. GT panicked after the Final Four run and did something foolish.

For all the Fowler bashing (most of it deserved and lots of it done by me), I will give him some credit. He’s avoided these types of situations, unlike his peers at GT, Clemson and UVA.

whether you are a member of the no chance, no way or sidney sunshine campaign.. let’s not get too high on ourselves. i think we can win both of our remaining games. just like every game this season. but we can undoubtably lose.

@vt, someone mentioned it was a bad time to catch them. i differ in opinion. it may be the best time to catch them. it appears the secret is out that they aren’t all that great. sometimes teams carry a good label and that is often the 6th man. a perfect example of this would be unc-ch in our two matchups. of course, we’ve been carrying that particular hangover for far too long, different subject. but vt isn’t as intimidating as it once was, we’ve played them before… when they were a little higher. i think for them to win, it will have to be the delaney show… i think we are very capable of shutting him down. 2 game winning streak hopefully = more decisive and well rounded attack! but no, i’m not getn my hopes up?

  21. Wulfpack 02/28/2010 at 5:51 PM #

My prediction is that Virginia Tech is going to run us out of their gym. Hell, they ran us out of OUR gym. It’s essentially a must win for them. We do not match up well with them with their athletic guards. We better bring it or it will be a very long night in Blacksburg.

  22. fullmoon1 02/28/2010 at 6:49 PM #

That was a good effort all the way around. Any win on the road is a good one in the ACC. They played smart, and didn’t give up. The only thing that would have made it sweeter would be if the tarholes had lost. I really don’t understand people thinking that the tarholes play a tough schedule. It doesn’t matter when you lose the the tough ooc games and then lose to the entire conference barring us and wake. lol.

  23. Wolfy__79 02/28/2010 at 7:05 PM #

agreed, especially if ur talking about whippinz or double d’s losses early season dawgs… wolf wolf!

  24. Wolfy__79 02/28/2010 at 7:11 PM #

noone but ourselves have run us out of the gym this year. i know we’re not all that talented. i’m mean, seriously…. ZERO TALENT. the negatives have outweighed the positvies on the floor this year. f.e. tracy 2 + javi -4 = net -2. crap. but my point is that we are the victums of our own demise.
