This was actually a pretty big win for Sid and this program. If we can at least split of the next two -we’ve avoided the trainwreck season.

Good job by team and staff today…the win showed a lot of heart and guts.

no &$#* way I’m pulling for the holes over Miami. Besides, why would you? we lose tiebreaker to unc, so need to finish a game ahead. If miami can somehow win that one, we need one of two to leave the holes all alone in the cellar.

we’ve even got an outside chance at passing BC.

  3. BSIE80 02/27/2010 at 9:30 PM #

    We win. Very little discussion.
We lose. We get 250 posts on what needs to be changed (Sports program is shameful, AD is a hill billy, coach isn’t a coach, etc.)

    Glad we won.

I think both teams were very limited offensively. We basically had 2 options, Javi or Traci. Miami decided they had one option which was the freshman point guard. We won, because our 2 guys beat their 1 guy at the end. Also, we made the FT’s at the end- thank goodness.

  4. Wolfy__79 02/27/2010 at 9:57 PM #

there really was a two man attack for much of the day. early on javi looked good, he was confident and hit early shots. tracy as well. javi took himself out of that offensive mode. but others picked it up. miami added some hustle to tighten up on defense 2nd half. miami’s balanced scoring, especially from the bench looked to be a problem for us… defienetly when we were down nine. a few hustle plays and a couple of breaks and we were right back into it. javi really closed the game off, he really had a good game. it could have been better but he did lose his head a few times. for the first time all year… shi#, since he’s been here, i wanted him to take his shots. he had one or two bad ones, but he looked like he was on today. i wasn’t suprised with the officiating, there were times today in both halves when we were flat out getting hacked and pushed around. i don’t know what it is, and i’m as unbiased as possible, but NCSU always gets the shaft in this dept. in the first half, we were building a lead and had two empty possessions that foul calls should have been whistled. it doesn’t hurt as much with a win, but it always pisses me off.

  5. Wolfy__79 02/27/2010 at 10:02 PM #

it definetly wasn’t a thing of beauty, but an all important win. i think they’ll play a little more confident/prettier with 2 consecutive wins. that has been a key missing ingredient. the area we need in the worst way is scoring from about 15ft or so, we are so limited in that dept. it’s either layups, floating hooks from tracy or three pointers. we don’t have much else… or we don’t use much else. i think this is where cj and wood need to be effective.

so how did yawl like the zone defense today. this is the first time we’ve seen it all year right??

    ^box score, team stats

all in all it was a hard fought win. as far as miami vs unc. from what i saw out of the holes today, they played pretty good team ball and beat a floundering wake team. i don’t think miami can beat the team that played today. unc may have secured a non last place finish. of course duke will destroy them at cameron. i wouldn’t be suprised if we at the very least get one of the last two. bc at the rbc should be exciting. i give us a 50/50 chance at vt. of course they had a 2x ot loss today, they may be mentally screwed?? i think we avoided the ugly play today, miami won that honor. we did have three or four long droughts.. some of that was due to poor officiating, IMO. but they were still droughts! no clutch scorer at guard hurts.

I haven’t read all the comments, but this was one great win. I know naysayers are silent, but this team kicked ASS the last 5-8 minutes, and that is what counts. Alot of fight in these guys. this was one of our best wins, the way they came back and hit those ft’s to win it.

  8. blpack 02/27/2010 at 10:40 PM #

We need to make sure Hewitt, Haith and the FSU coach stick around. Good win by the Pack today.

  9. tuckerdorm1983 02/27/2010 at 10:53 PM #

i certainly enjoyed the 15 commericials between the UNC game and endless time it took to switch to our game. I will never buy nothing those SOBs were selling

  10. Wolfy__79 02/27/2010 at 10:56 PM #

i’m out of the region, 360 got the tip. glad i got to see the beginning of the first half. you know unc-ch getn a win will get overhyped. they did play better than they have, but i’m not sold on a miraculous comeback for them.

  11. Wolfy__79 02/27/2010 at 11:00 PM #

We need to make sure Hewitt, Haith and the FSU coach stick around””

yes we do, of those three. i think leonard hamilton, fsu, is probably the best coach. but, it seems they’re always floating around the middle. i’m sure he’ll be around for a while. hewitt & haith… can’t really say anything positive about their coaching.

  12. Wolfy__79 02/27/2010 at 11:02 PM #

this team kicked ASS the last 5-8 minutes,””

they really did. javi was huge. probably one of his best career games. he could have scored thirty today. do you think tired legs were part of some of the missed free throws late? i think tracy played tired all game. he hustled throughout, but when he got to the line.. he just looked tired. he was working and getn a ton of minutes early and throughout.

how about javi’s new hair cut? all he needs now are a few lines in it!

  13. 61Packer 02/27/2010 at 11:22 PM #

“We need to make sure Hewitt, Haith and the FSU coach stick around.”

I imagine that Haith has the Miami job as long as he wants it, gathering from the size of the crowds down there. They couldn’t care any less about basketball in Coral Gables. Hewitt isn’t that bad a coach, and he’s a pretty good recruiter. Hamilton is doing pretty well at FSU lately, and the Sems should make it to the Dance.

With today’s win, the Pack has probably avoided sole possession of the ACC cellar as well as the 12th seed in the ACC tourney. If we end up tied for last with Miami, will this win today put us in next season’s ACC-Big Ten Challenge?

  14. travelwolf 02/27/2010 at 11:42 PM #

It wasn’t pretty, but we won – and without shooting lights out. We were running plays and 1/2 of our shots were off those plays. One thing Lowe needs to help our players figure out is how to run a fast break and when not to run one. We lost 3 baskets on that alone – not to mention the free throws.

I’ll guarantee you that after other coaches see how effective Miami’s zone was, we’ll be seeing more of that this year. I hope Lowe teaches some offense against the zone before the next game.

Tracy Smith is good, make that great . They were trying to triple him several times, but he still got the shot off. Basically, he’s our entire offense, and offense from anyone else is ‘frosting on the cake’.

The speed advantage that their highly rated freshman had over Javi was evident, but Javi won on basketball smarts and good defense (when their freshman didn’t have momentum to fly by him, that is).

It’s good to see CJ Williams get more playing time – if we are going to move to the next level next year, he’ll have to be a major contributor.

After seeing how few people were at the basketball game, I actually felt sorry for Miami. I checked out highly ranked Miami’s players are, and they’ve got a pretty talented team. Not sure why they aren’t better this year.

  15. Wolfy__79 02/28/2010 at 2:20 AM #

yeap, the fast breaks weren’t very good, especially late 1st and into the 2nd. degand botched a few himself. i didn’t notice javi messing any up. but degand forced the hell out of the ball. and then almost committed some cheap fouls after the turnovers! this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the zone.. we’ve struggled each time though. this is where mays and wood can be most effective. cj too, one of those three has to start strecthing that zone and hitn 15 footers.

after seeing this team for an entire season. i would say that today’s game doesn’t fall into the ugly category. they ruled that out when they claw’d back from down nine. miami’s part was ugly.. the game was close, but it seemed that their offense was about as random as it could get. they did a nice job with the zone, but we were able to make some shots. tracy is one of the best pf’s in the league. to me, he lacks a little versatility in his game to this point. of course, he’s getn alot of double teams so he won’t look too great. i think he struggles against good shot blockers. i hated to see him against hinson, he caused problems for tracy. of course he was getn hacked to death. i thought javi was pretty effective on defense. of course his speed isn’t good enough, but he’s staying in front of them as best he can. miami does have talent. i think you can recruit there, i just don’t think they’ll get a big name coach anytime soon. well i’d say cj has a battle with scott wood next year. wood has gotten so much pt this year, he should be pretty good next season. maybe cj is starting to come around. we’ll need him in these last few games.

  16. Wolfy__79 02/28/2010 at 2:23 AM #

i don’t feel sorry for miami, nor bc or any of the new teams. i’d like to get back to 8 ACC teams, ya know: NCSU, duke, wake, uva, md, gt, clemson, unc-ch. vt can stay, fsu too i guess. but miami and bc can take a hike to the big east for all i care. its just a shame that we’re at the bottom with the likes of these teams!

  17. wufpup76 02/28/2010 at 2:42 AM #

Wolfy mentioned the VT game above – our game against them is an absolute must win for them now.

VT may not even make it in at 9-7 (given an ACCT first round loss then more than likely not). There is absolutely nothing in their OOC slate to help them other than an exotic locale win over SETON HALL. They don’t really have any wins of note, even in conference. They really need their last two.

I do like the way we are playing, so I think that could be an interesting game. Be fine with me if we popped their bubble. I’ll be very interested to see how we respond to a team that absolutely must win. Just remember all the pressure is on them guys 🙂

We managed to win a road game today while shooting poorly from the line (again) and giving up a ton of offensive rebounds. Defense improved throughout the 2nd half particularly late, but it was not a great defensive effort – good enough to get the job done today. We simply give up too many offensive boards still. Imagine how solid this team could be (have been) with some fundamental improvements. If, if if if if.

On the positive side, I thought the halfcourt offensive sets were ok / pretty good today. Javi did a nice job and hopefully we can move Julius to the 2 spot next season. He’s got a nice stroke and hopefully not having the pressure of running the offense can get him untracked next season. Individual defensive plays were timely, and we hit some big throws down the stretch. We didn’t turn the ball over a ton … Lastly, I think Painter is doing a nice job with his spot minutes – he is a hustler and is miles ahead of where he was at the beginning of the season. Always huge when we have someone who actually takes a charge, and he’s a freshman!

Also, 61 – I believe as long as we seeded 11th or better we are in the Challenge next season. So whatever seed we have in the ACCT will represent our final standing.

I watched the game sporadically on ESPN 360 – did we play CJ Williams more at small forward than shooting guard? My opinion and $2 will buy you a cup of coffee, but CJ just has not looked comfortable in the SG spot, he seems better suited to SF.

I am absolutely not sticking up for Lee Fowler when I write this statement, but is this what Fowler meant when he said fans need to be loyal to the coach? We have 40 posts on this site after the win, if we lost there would be 250+ with 99% calling for Lowe’s job.

We have 40 posts on this site after the win, if we lost there would be 250+ with 99% calling for Lowe’s job.

We were just being courteous and leaving space for the folks in the Sidney Lowe Sunshine Squad to pontificate. Surprised there haven’t been any calls yet to lock him into a lifetime contract. On the heels of these two consecutive wins I think he’s rising up on the radar of many other schools.

Coaching won this one. Sid had a great game plan and the guys stuck to it.

You can’t credit Sid for the 4 wins and absolve him of all blame for the 10 losses.

He and the team did a great job yesterday of coming back from a 9-point deficit. They didn’t give up and Tracy and Javi had great games. It was fun to watch us put the Canes away down the stretch.

But the drum I’ve been beating the last month or so is that we had enough talent to be better than 4-10. Some people disagree and seem to believe that Sid shouldn’t be expected to do better than another basement finish. If we had split with Virginia and UNC (3-8 and 2-10 against everyone but us, respectively), we’d be 6-8 right now and in the middle of the ACC pack where I thought we realistically belonged this year.

So the 2-game winning streak is nice, but it hasn’t yet washed the 7-game losing streak out of my mouth yet.

I cede the floor back to the SLSS.

Nice win Pack. Way to take care of business in the last 5 minutes. We played with poise and confidence down the stretch and I am proud. CJW seems to be gaining confidence the last couple of games. He has made positive contributions rather than reverting to the “human turnover” of multiple prior games. If Wood can ever get aggressive offensively, we will be much tougher to deal with. He needs to watch tape on Reddick and Curry and learn how those guys created a huge amount of their shots by shear hustle and constant motion and the smart use of screens set for them. I have said it before and I will stand by it–a player with his shot, his height/reach and his bball IQ should take at least 15 shots per game. Then Tracy will be able to eat up single coverage. Again, nice win. Keep it up. Go Pack!

  21. HarrowpwnzU 02/28/2010 at 10:29 AM #

^^But you don’t have a problem placing blame on Lowe for the 7 losses bu not giving him credit for the two?

If your coach gets you 20+ WIDE OPEN shots a game and you hit two of them, when you lose, it’s not the coach’s fault.

The games where we hit our wide open shots we win, when we don’t hit them, we lose.

Before the season if we had Brown, I thought we’d finish 6-7th but be on the outside looking in at the NCAAs due to a weak ACC. After Brown didn’t qualify, I figured we’d finish about 10th. We’re trending towards that spot.

We need to pull for UNC to beat Miami to ensure that we don’t finish 12th. UNC has the tie breaker advantage over us. We have the tie breaker advantage over Miami. If all three teams were to finish with the same record, it’d go UNC, NC State, Miami due to the head to head match ups. We want Miami to lose out. Granted, it’s admittedly quite sad that we’re having this conversation, but that’s another, well discussed topic.

The team (collectively coaches and players) deserved a lot of credit yesterday. They went into Miami (who had only lost 2 home games this season) and won. ACC wins on the road are extremely hard to come by. I thought we had a pretty good game plan and stuck to it.

Some of the individual players really had nice games. CJ has really improved down the stretch. I thought before the season he should be a SF and I think he plays better at that spot (and did today). This was probably his best game of the season. TS was TS. Outside of the FTs, he was everything you’d want out of your star, All ACC player. Javi played a solid game and avoided his Javi moments (where he tries to go 1:5 or ignores all teammates in an individual battle with the other team’s superior PG).

There were still some head scratching substitution patterns yesterday. In the second half, we were on the verge of getting blown out when down nine and had JD and JM in there after a time out. I like those kids a lot, but at that point the starters need to be in. They came back in, and then we recovered and went on our run.

I still think we’d be better served playing a lot of zone, playing more forwards (CJW is a forward) and moving SW to the SG position. We’ve not really seen it all season, so I doubt we will now. It would be nice though.

I commend the team for continuing to fight. It could have been easy to just have tanked. This has to go to both the players and the coaching staff.

The more that I think about it, the more that I think that players do develop under SL. I can look at TS, JG, FD, CJ (of late) and Painter and see kids that have clearly improved. Our problem with talent seems to be more with some poor initial assessments that led to offering kids who weren’t ACC ready than it is with what they’ve done since stepping on campus.

Finally, I’ll close by saying that our offensive movement was clearly superior in the last two games, so it’s no surprise to me that we’ve shot better. People can say that the kids weren’t hitting shots during our losing streak, but I saw a team that stopped moving without the ball and just stood around and watched TS while swinging the ball around the perimeter. Yesterday’s offense had much more movement and off the ball screening despite playing against a zone (which has been our kryptonite). I still believe we’d be much better if we ran more motion and I hope to see the recent trend continue.

This post is both funny and sad on a number of different levels. For example, I just don’t understand why there would be any naysayers when:

A win over Miami (with 4 ACC wins) is one of your best wins of the season.

A win moves you out of sole possession of last place into a tie for last place.

There is one week left in the season, and your team has yet to match their coach’s average of 5 ACC wins per season.

^ Hahaha. VaWolf you are a trip.

Also, I don’t know whether it’s been mentioned elsewhere (I haven’t read all posts), but the WF loss to us on our homecourt was labeled by CBS as one of two bad season losses for WF during the UNC game, along with Bill & Mary (be interested to see if the UNC loss becomes #3; highly doubtful).

How far the once mighty has fallen (and I ain’t talking about the holes).
