That is going to leave a mark

NC State succeeded to erase most of the goodwill the Wolfpack had built in the early part of the season with an embarrassing 70-62 home loss to fellow projected cellar-dwellar, Virginia.

State was up ten points in the middle of the second half when Mike Wood called an ‘interesting’ charge on Dennis Horner that took 2 points off the board for us that would have extended our lead to 12.

UVa followed that possession with a three pointer and the mentally-weak Wolfpack’s collapse was just beginning . I would love to know what the scoring was in the game after the foul called on Horner.

The Wolfpack then missed free throw after free throw after free throw and couldn’t score to offset our bad defense as Virginia pulled away. For the game, the Wolfpack was a miserable 16-25 from the free throw line (61.5%) while Virginia shot a blistering 19-20 from the charity stripe.

The first 30 seconds of the game was literally a mirror into the foundational deficiencies that plague the NC State program: (1) Javi Gonzalez committed an unforced turnover in the first eight seconds of the basketball game. How is that even possible?, (2) Virginia grabbed an offensive rebound on their shot attempt just 27 seconds into the game. You couldn’t have even scripted behavior more telling than that.

I wish I could comment on Coach Lowe’s substitution pattern, but I don’t quite understand it any more than he does.

A good friend of mine emailed me the following after the game —

I don’t get emotional about NC State Basketball anymore. This is literally the first time all year I’ve wasted more than 30 mins (of my time) on a game, and I realize now why I do not dedicate any time watching this.

Why do I send you this? Because I think I probably feel the same way a lot of fans do, and it is sad. There was nobody in RBC for an ACC game on a Saturday.

Looking at our ACC schedule, there is no team we are clearly better than on the list. We’ll have a small margin for error in all our games. It could get really bad this year; I hope I am wrong.

Once again we have “hope”, with Harrow and a few others coming, which is horrible becuase “hope” is not a plan. I HATE the excuse that you have to get players, though I know it is importanct. We both know you are not a good program if you have to rely on a a great recruit to be competitive. Good coaches can overcome a certain level of talent gap by focusing on fundamentals and sound basketball. And I really don’t think our talent gap is too large in ACC competition.

So . . . if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck. If the team gets 4 wins or less in the ACC, a real possibility, it would be appalling not to make a change. And once again, I really hope I’m wrong and get a surprise to the upside!!!

I totally understand his thoughts and his feelings. I just don’t understand why any NC State would remotely entertain any coaching move while Lee F*ing Fowler would be the AD responsible for making the hire. What coach in America do you think would want to work for that bozo? I know quite a few personally – including one in Texas – who has told his friends and inner circle there would be no way in hell they ‘would ever work for that idiot’.

As we’ve been trying to tell you for YEARS — there is NO REASON to focus or worry about any of the individual programs before you fix the biggest problem that inherently impacts every program — LEE FOWLER.

SUNDAY UPDATE (11 a.m.)

The fallout from Saturday’s loss has spilled over into Sunday now and I just can’t tell you how happy it makes me that I get the pleasure of talking about the game more.

Luke DeCock addressed State’s sloppy play in his column today in the N&O.

Also, Denny Kuiper, from the ACC Journal, touched on State/Virginia in his 3-pointer.

I don’t really have anymore to say about the game. State should have won by 8-10 points and ended up losing by eight. The one thing that really scares me about it, the more I think about it, is that this debacle came against Virginia. This wasn’t Carolina or Duke or some top tier team, it was Virginia. The next three weeks sure look like they could be loads of fun.

    Maybe it’s just me but……

I don’t see Horner providing much at all. Several of our closest games have almost been lost on his very poor decisions and play (at the end of the game).

CJ must play golf with Sidney. How else could he play this much?

The “Aussie” has been a big plus thus far (even if he just stands there), so where was he in the 2nd half?

Nobody will ever understand the rotation logic.

Missed free throws was the death nail for the Pack today. State very well could of been up by about 20 at the 12 minute mark had they hit their FTs.

Some of the videos and articles yesterday and today concerning Dr. Woodson include statements of his that lead me to believe that Dr. Woodward has been getting alot of mail lately concerning Foulup, and has passed that information on to Dr. Woodson. While I have no actual knowledge of what, if anything, has transpired between them at this juncture, I certainly hope this is the case. I would think that it would be beneficial to keep those letters and emails going to Dr. Woodward, with requests that they be turned over to Dr. Woodson when he actually assumes the Chancellor position. But I agree with many who feel that nothing positive can happen to Wolfpack athletics until Foulup is G-O-N-E from NCSU!!!!!!!

There has to be a coaching change. Pull the plug, the season is done!
The NC State Job can be enticing for multiple reasons:
    It is an ACC School.
There is a large fan base.
Our facilities are top notch compared to most.
Any slight improvement will be loved(ACC Tournament Title?) NCAA Bid?
Great exposure for Television,(if we win a little)
Mr. Murphy will pay any surplus salaries for a top notch coach(Rick Barnes/he is not affraid of Coach K or that Roy W twit).
And the opportunity to become an ACC legend. Remember,Coach K was not a name,he made himself one and when NC State won their title(83) he was about to be fired.

Our New Year’s Resolution for 2010!

Now we know why Sid and Lee Fowler set zero expectations for this basketball team in the off-season…

All I’m hoping for is that Dr. Woodson commit to OBJECTIVELY evaluate the performance of our athletic director and that of our athletic programs beginning promptly at 8:00am on Monday.

Sid will obviously get to finish the season as he should. But after a performance like today, I will be surprised if we equal last season’s win total. And that’s just damning.

I know my comments and requests for coaching change may seem harsh, but if a NFL coach can be fired right after a flight back form the west coast(redskins jim zorn) and if a college football coach can be fired instantly for treatment of a player(texas tech/mike leach) or a NBA coach after 12 games(Byron Scott) then why not? Imagine if they brought in a Major name to complete the season? But I know this, the attendance is dwindling, the games are boring, low scoring and this year, the acc is
a lesser league than past years. Even if El Sid has his best players(WTNY?if that means anything), he still will not be better than 6-10. So a change has to occur or we have to accept what we have, A division III team in Raliegh.

And that goes for football as well. 5-7 or 6-6 season’s and a win over a
underacheving UNC team can not be accepted as well, but that is another story!!
Second New Year’s Resolution:Football Success or new coach!!

  7. Clarksa 01/09/2010 at 5:45 PM #

This was one we simply had to have…no excuse for losing this game.

Was the new chancellor in attendance today?

  8. Wulfpack 01/09/2010 at 5:48 PM #

    In other action…

    South Carolina 80, Auburn 71
    Vanderbilt 95, Florida 87
    Villanova 78, Marquette 76
    Northeastern 66, Georgia State 54
    Lafayette 84, Holy Cross 74

  9. VaWolf82 01/09/2010 at 5:48 PM #

Anyone that seriously thinks that there is any chance that Sid will be fired mid-season is simply fooling themselves…and looking foolish as well.

  10. MA Wolfpack 01/09/2010 at 5:48 PM #

NCSU has less talent than every team in the ACC. 4-12 is the best we can hope for with this talent. After this loss, we may not get there.

Talent is more important than anything else in the ACC (with coaching second). GT showed us this again today when a terrible coach (Hewitt) defeated a great coach (Coach K) because he has assembled better talent.

  11. D_Medlin 01/09/2010 at 5:50 PM #

The new Chancellor didn’t get introduced during a TO or halftime or anything. I have a feeling if he had been there something like that would have happened.

    whope90,

The Jim Zorn and Mike Leach situations don’t really compare to Sid’s situation, do they?

  12. GoldenChain 01/09/2010 at 5:53 PM #

I think the SF and papack nailed it. Some of us were feeling a little better based off of more hustle and effort but this game basically erased any of that ‘good will’. As has been the lot of a Pack fan since V and Sheridan left, our hopes are dashed yet again!

…..maybe if I become a xarolina fan the bad karma will transfer?!

  13. BJD95 01/09/2010 at 5:55 PM #

I know, it’s just too bad Sid has no control over the talent in his program after 4 years. We should fire the GM instead.

  14. tobaccordshow 01/09/2010 at 5:55 PM #

“State was up ten points in the middle of the second half when Mike Wood called an ‘interesting’ charge on Dennis Horner that took 2 points off the board for us that would have extended our lead to 12.”

it shouldve been and-1… Wait you’re right… It wouldve only extended the lead to 12

  15. blpack 01/09/2010 at 5:57 PM #

^ old 13- Keep those cards and letters coming in. Woodward and Woodson need to hear from us. I think Fowler is on the way out, but nothing good can happen until then, so it may be wishful thinking. The program is a mess and the staff needs to go. We can be good again and keep our recruits. Very frustrating.

“if a NFL coach can be fired right after a flight back form the west coast(redskins jim zorn) and if a college football coach can be fired instantly for treatment of a player(texas tech/mike leach) or a NBA coach after 12 games(Byron Scott) then why not? Whittenburg got fired five games into this year at Fordham…

  17. BJD95 01/09/2010 at 6:06 PM #

As VaWolf said, let’s not have an insane discussion. No way should we ever (absent a Leach-type situation) fire a coach midseason. You don’t need a firing to have feelers out. All that would do is open the possibility of making a dumb decision and hiring the interim guy.

  18. WendellPackster 01/09/2010 at 6:09 PM #

Until Lee Fowler leaves NC State sports will get no more of my money or time.

  19. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 6:18 PM #

Lee Fowler is going nowhere unless someone tells him all the catfish have fled the state.

  20. D_Medlin 01/09/2010 at 6:25 PM #

He was at the game today, giving Thurl Bailey his plaque at center court.

Didn’t see where he got to after that, maybe Sammy’s?

  21. tootallorder 01/09/2010 at 6:29 PM #

“Honestly, how does Fowler even manage to safely go out into public at this point? Does he not get heckled everywhere he goes? Or has he become a full time lake house recluse who no longer even goes into the office?”

I’ve noticed that during in-game presentations, Fowler’s name is no longer mentioned. It’s now “the athletics department is proud to honor…” Quick question. When does the Lee Fowler Show crank back up?

  22. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 6:43 PM #

    “the Lee Fowler Show”….wtf.

Is there anothe AD in the nation who has their own show?

  23. PoppaJohn 01/09/2010 at 6:45 PM #

Mentally weak – excellent diagnosis, I think that is definitely our largest problem. Between lack of experience, talent, and on court leadership, we are mentally weak.
In the post game Sid said he thought our three primary guys let us down today, totally agree.

We ARE the worst team in the ACC.

  24. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 01/09/2010 at 6:48 PM #

I don’t think firing Lowe is the right thing to do. State has a very good class coming in next year and if Lowe is let go the entire class could go leaving State with noting next fall.

As awful as things are now it makes more sense to let the new Chancellor review the programs, make a change at AD if he thinks that is what he should do and give Lowe one more year. I don’t know if Lowe will be able to turn it around but at least with next fall’s class we know that if Lowe has to go after 2011 there will be solid talent in place for the next guy.

If Lowe is sent packing this year all the recruits could go and the next the new coach could be stuck with very little much like when Sendek left.

I don’t want to lose the talent coming next year and has sick as I am about today, Florida, Arizona I don’t want to go through another 2 or 3 years of a new coach… At least not yet.

  25. Dogbreath 01/09/2010 at 7:10 PM #

The only way we lose Harrow and Brown is if our chickenshit AD is still around to let them out of their binding LOIs.
