That is going to leave a mark

NC State succeeded to erase most of the goodwill the Wolfpack had built in the early part of the season with an embarrassing 70-62 home loss to fellow projected cellar-dwellar, Virginia.

State was up ten points in the middle of the second half when Mike Wood called an ‘interesting’ charge on Dennis Horner that took 2 points off the board for us that would have extended our lead to 12.

UVa followed that possession with a three pointer and the mentally-weak Wolfpack’s collapse was just beginning . I would love to know what the scoring was in the game after the foul called on Horner.

The Wolfpack then missed free throw after free throw after free throw and couldn’t score to offset our bad defense as Virginia pulled away. For the game, the Wolfpack was a miserable 16-25 from the free throw line (61.5%) while Virginia shot a blistering 19-20 from the charity stripe.

The first 30 seconds of the game was literally a mirror into the foundational deficiencies that plague the NC State program: (1) Javi Gonzalez committed an unforced turnover in the first eight seconds of the basketball game. How is that even possible?, (2) Virginia grabbed an offensive rebound on their shot attempt just 27 seconds into the game. You couldn’t have even scripted behavior more telling than that.

I wish I could comment on Coach Lowe’s substitution pattern, but I don’t quite understand it any more than he does.

A good friend of mine emailed me the following after the game —

I don’t get emotional about NC State Basketball anymore. This is literally the first time all year I’ve wasted more than 30 mins (of my time) on a game, and I realize now why I do not dedicate any time watching this.

Why do I send you this? Because I think I probably feel the same way a lot of fans do, and it is sad. There was nobody in RBC for an ACC game on a Saturday.

Looking at our ACC schedule, there is no team we are clearly better than on the list. We’ll have a small margin for error in all our games. It could get really bad this year; I hope I am wrong.

Once again we have “hope”, with Harrow and a few others coming, which is horrible becuase “hope” is not a plan. I HATE the excuse that you have to get players, though I know it is importanct. We both know you are not a good program if you have to rely on a a great recruit to be competitive. Good coaches can overcome a certain level of talent gap by focusing on fundamentals and sound basketball. And I really don’t think our talent gap is too large in ACC competition.

So . . . if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck. If the team gets 4 wins or less in the ACC, a real possibility, it would be appalling not to make a change. And once again, I really hope I’m wrong and get a surprise to the upside!!!

I totally understand his thoughts and his feelings. I just don’t understand why any NC State would remotely entertain any coaching move while Lee F*ing Fowler would be the AD responsible for making the hire. What coach in America do you think would want to work for that bozo? I know quite a few personally – including one in Texas – who has told his friends and inner circle there would be no way in hell they ‘would ever work for that idiot’.

As we’ve been trying to tell you for YEARS — there is NO REASON to focus or worry about any of the individual programs before you fix the biggest problem that inherently impacts every program — LEE FOWLER.

SUNDAY UPDATE (11 a.m.)

The fallout from Saturday’s loss has spilled over into Sunday now and I just can’t tell you how happy it makes me that I get the pleasure of talking about the game more.

Luke DeCock addressed State’s sloppy play in his column today in the N&O.

Also, Denny Kuiper, from the ACC Journal, touched on State/Virginia in his 3-pointer.

I don’t really have anymore to say about the game. State should have won by 8-10 points and ended up losing by eight. The one thing that really scares me about it, the more I think about it, is that this debacle came against Virginia. This wasn’t Carolina or Duke or some top tier team, it was Virginia. The next three weeks sure look like they could be loads of fun.

I keep reading these posts and i see a familiar theme, the players should have hit their free throws, or next year we will have Ryan Harrow and L brown etc etc etc. Or we have decent players or the AD needs to go.

As Sam Cooke once sang”A change is gonna come” once the AD and Coach goes, when the Wolfpack club and fans rise up remove these two at season’s end.

We need to play that song once both of those two are gone<'It has been a long time coming but a change is going to come!""

    thank god!

Hey that is a great idea! Hire Pat Summit for Tennessee!! I know that is crazy but think about it! A landmark hiring and a winner to boot plus imagine the looks players would get if they missed free throw and etc.
Is that crazy, i like it!

One last thought for the night:What does the NCAA Tournament have in common
with the ACC conference minus NC State Men’s Basketball over the last four yrs?

All of the league teams have been to the NCAA tournament at least once except NC State: UNC, Duke, Wake, Clemson, Vtech, Maryland, BCollege,
Florida State, Miami, Virgina, GTech(this year).

And the fan attendance to the games have decreased greatly as well to the point that Duke and UNC split two offers on gopack.com.

It is a fan and Fianacial decision that needs to be made. We also need to consider returning to Reynolds because the RBC is basically a hockey arena.

Hope for the pack, lord we need it!!! 2010! WTNY!!!

    It is basically

I have wanted, since his hiring, for Sidney Lowe to overcome the massive failure that was Lee Fowler’s coaching search. I wanted Sidney to be a successful head coach at NCSU. I wanted it because Sidney was “one of us”. I wanted it because Sidney understands the passion of our alumni and fan base. I wanted it because he reaches out to our stars and teams of the past. I wanted it because he was not HWSNBN. I wanted HWSNBN gone as much as the vast majority of alumni or fans. However, after the loss to UVA, it is confirmed loud and clear that Mr. Lowe will not be able to get it done in Raleigh. There is simply no excuse for losing to a weak Virginia at home. No excuses, none, period.

Bad free throw shooting, poor rebounding, inability to block out on rebounds, strange substitution patterns, seeing Horner attempting to guard Landesburg on multiple possessions in the closing moments, seeing Horner on the floor when Virginia “went smaller” all fall on Sidney Lowe’s plate. He was in charge of that debacle.

I have been in agreement that we need to get Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown suited up in Wolfpack Red next year. I continue to hope that C.J. Leslie Luke Cothron will want to play in Raleigh. I still do think that the Harrow and Brown portion will come to pass because I believe:

    1) Our new chancellor has stated his views on the value of sports in the overall scope of North Carolina State University. He will evaluate our current pathetic athletic director and our languishing sports programs. Lee Fowler will either be strongly urged to retire one year early, be re-assigned to “special assistant in charge of facilities” or be fired.
    2) Any freshly hired AD will observe all programs for one season. He or she will then determine and spell out clear objectives for each program. It will be demonstrated that our basketball program is not where it needs to be nor is it likely to ever reach those clear objectives spelled out prior to next season with the current staff. At that point, Ryan Harrow, Lorenzo Brown and any others that sign national letters of intent will have played one season. Hopefully, they will be truly enjoying their college experience at NCSU. After a professionally handled search, the new AD will provide a new coach to the basketball team that both the team and all Wolfpackers will be able to rally in support of.
    3) Oh man, this is NC State! What was I thinking?????????

man this is some sad stuff i hear from you guys! i’m not bailing on sidney, now or in the future. i too, like sid.. but i’m not happy with the results to date. the way i see it is, he’s here right now and we are improved from last year!! period. whatever. yeah, we sucked last year. so far this year, we’ve seen a glimmer of hope coming early on before our first loss. i looked at the w/l and was somewhat excited. then i see the box score and have noticed all season that we aren’t getting enough points. none of this is new for me, noone should be suprised.

aside from what one said earlier today, javi is sid’s best third option. he gambled on some big name recruits and lost out to none other than the biggest snake in NCAA right now (calapari). thankfully we didn’t get him. but rick barnes would certainly be nice, accept we wouldn’t have gotten him the right way. you watch sid’s interviews and he doesn’t have any answers… yes he does, he sees that he messed up with his recruiting. he had john wall. sidney is like a very young coach taking the reigns (sp)… he is going to make mistakes. currently he’s been living under his nba style sets but is slowly and painfully learning that it doesn’t work with the a. bad talent and b. the young talent we have. in a year or two, yes he could look like a genius. does anyone remember the feeling when sidney outcoached roy year one, coincedently the last year we had a decent guard. my opinion is sidney is not trying to keep his job.. he is trying to lead us to the top. its obviously not happening right now/yet.. we til next year to truly evaluate him. we all know we should have beaten uva saturday. its over and lets roll into fsu. from what i see, sidney will evaluate himself far sooner than anyone in our athletic dept will and decide whether or not he can do the damn thing in Raleigh or not. quit riding him. and don’t try to make sense of his game until he gets a real pg… i assure you running javi a point year three was a miscalculation not a plan. and as far as tracy smith is concerned a. he can’t be truly evaluated without any help down low and b. he’s a small forward at best. this nonsense about going back to reynolds, forget this nonsense! you don’t build a castle and move into the outhouse.

TOB is a SOLID coach. i swear, be patient with him if noone else. i was shocked when he came to us. look at him after the unc game this year, he was disgusted as was everyone else. he will win some games with/without RW.

“I hear rumblings that Fowler is going to be gone but that won’t happen before summer.

I’d like to hear more on this. I figured that might happen eventually, but I haven’t heard anything specific. Can you elaborate on this at all? Or would that give away your source?

    Any info would be great!”

I cann’t really elaborate. I don’t know any details. Just information from a friend of mine that is in the Wolfpack club and has some pretty good contacts. He says he hears that Fowlers supporters are fast disappearing. That a change is likely but probably not until the new Chancellor takes office. Then it could end up be something along the lines of a reassignment as he still has supporters that think he has done a good job in certain areas such as fu-cilities, and academics, or maybe he finally gets a new job. Another possibility would be a retirement with a buyout. We’ll just have to wait and see and hope my buddy is correct.

I think so, too. But is TOB really getting it done in Raleigh? Like Sidney in 2009 and projected 2010, he is a pretty good recruiter. But where are the results? Why is the defense so pathetic in his third year?

I’m afraid our defenses are getting worse with each year that we lose more of Amato’s defensive players. TOB has put together a good offense, but if he continues to stand by Archer as DC, that could be his undoing in the end. If we wallow on defense again next year, which I think is entirely possible, what does that mean for TOB? Will those people that are so quick to bemoan Sidney Lowe begin to complain about TOB, too?

I think it’s a valid question to ask. What has TOB done that gives us so much confidence in him? He has greatly improved the offense. I’ll give him that. But when will he get the defense figured out? I understand Archer’s teams gave up an average of 31 ppg while he was at Kentucky. I wonder what gives TOB so much confidence in him to do better here. Because that’s about what our defense did this year, too.

Thanks for the update, Wolf74. I’m just glad to hear something is possibly still in the works with regard to Fowler. Even if it’s just a reassignment, that’s fine with me! As long as he’s not in the AD position.
