Roy Williams Kicks Presbyterian Fan Out of Dean Dome

During the second half, Deon Thompson was shooting free throws. The Smith Center was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. That’s when it happened. One of the Blue Hose faithful yelled something to the effect of “You’re gonna miss it, Deon.” Although it didn’t cause Thompson to miss the free throw, it did catch the ire of head coach Roy Williams.

I enjoy when UNX looks bad as much as the next guy, but maybe a mention of OUR win yesterday?

How much discussion do you expect for a game against Ga-Southern? If you have something you want to discuss about the game, feel free to join in on the 3 page thread here:

I do not know what the guy said, but I wonder why the fans around him did not handle the guy if he was vulgar. Roy should be coaching and concentrating on the game. I am amazed that he can hear what one fan is saying with a reported attendance of 18,000+. I enjoyed the scene in Blind Side when Sandra Bullock’s character shut up the racist redneck behind her by telling him to behave and not show his ignorance. I did not know that the basketball coach is in charge of the security crew and the behavior of visiting fans. I think coaches have the authority to tell their own fans to behave when they are treating visiting teams with major disrespect, but I don’t think that carries over to visiting fans. I like Roy. He is so much easier to like and respect than holier than thou Dean, but I am getting tired of his outbursts with no real explanation or heartfelt apology.

The guy wasn’t drunk. He was drinking Pepsi.

  6. FunPack 12/13/2009 at 5:17 PM #

    You stay classy, Roy.

“I don’t think anyone should yell anything negative to our players when you come on “our” tickets to watch “our” game”

“if it were a playground I would have different ideas, but I am from the mountains”

    – Roy from Press Conference

LOL! Really? We are going to go with that as the explanation. Roy’s self-intitlement and holier-than-thou BS is really starting to get old.

Roy seems like a good guy, but he is human, and he does use poor judgement with media and fans on a somewhat regular basis. His excuse for dropping the f-bomb in a post-game interview last year was that he should have said “frickin’.” His excuse for his famous, “right now I don’t give a s&#t about North Carolina” response to Bonnie Bernstein after the Kansas loss in the 2003 NCAA tourney was that the question was inappropriate. Now his excuse for having a visiting fan ejected by security for yelling at a UNX free throw shooter is “I don’t think anyone should yell anything negative to our players when you come in on our tickets to watch our game.” Wow! I always thought Roy incorporated the best of Dean and threw out the sanctimonious, holier than thou, crybaby crap that Dean used to gush, but I must have been mistaken. He kept some of that junk that Stormin’ Norman, K and Barnes loathed. I can’t wait for the Holes to play some tough road games and some tough home games when the opposing fans are negative to the baby blues. Let the whining begin.

Roy can suck my left nut

What a freaking baby. Should provide some good student section material for our game this year though.

  11. theghost 12/13/2009 at 6:29 PM #

I don’t think it’s Roy’s fault. I’m not sure he was like that when he got there. I think that’s what living in that hellhole does to people.

  12. Rochester 12/13/2009 at 6:56 PM #

Did they give the guy his money back? Obviously he misunderstood when he paid his hard-earned dough to watch the game that there were rules against trying to distract the Hole players. They should have made that more clear. I know Presbyterian fans have a reputation for being very tough on overrated opponents, so the security should have been detaining them on the way in to prevent episodes like this.

What do you expect from a pig but a grunt. Roy is assy not classy.

  14. fullmoon1 12/13/2009 at 8:36 PM #

I hope someone is is developing a screenprint to make t shirts with the phrase “you’re gonna miss it, Deon”. I suggest we foul Deon as much as possible and have the whole rbc chant that very slogan.

Unbelievable! Reminds of the time I was in Chapel Hell pulling for our Pack and I was located in the middle of their section cheering. I was basically told to shut my mouth….I was only singing our fight song with our band.( and I was being polite and singing it with the proper words)….. of course I didn’t shut up, but imagine if every school removed fans from the stadium for cheering for the visiting team…New standard in Chapel Hell. Seriously, all non-conference schools should hold fast and not play in Chapel Hell with their rules, simply tell UNC no thanks, if we can’t bring our fans, then we just won’t go into Chapel Hell….. Then all the little crying sheep can have their little town all to themselves. Of course, they see nothing wrong with what happened….its totally one of the most hateful places I have ever visited….but when they lose a game…..THEY CAN’T BE FOUND. Roy has some serious issues…..It is a sad time for the ACC.

From looking at the “replay ” it looks like attendance is down at the deandom. Hmmmmmmm. very interesting. Hopefully this will stop anyone from ever taking the “but Roy is classy” angle in an argument.

  17. packalum44 12/13/2009 at 9:29 PM #

Did someone call the whambulance for Roy?

  18. packforestry 12/13/2009 at 9:50 PM #

I must say that I never thought I would be surprised by anything that those arrogant a-holes did but his is beyond belief. If that’s all the guy said then he deserves his money back and a public apology. I’m from the mountains too Roy and we don’t treat people like that around here. What a joke.

  19. fullmoon1 12/13/2009 at 9:59 PM #

It sounds like a plea for attention. With having lost two games espn is not quite as far up unc’s a$$ as usual. Just like a whiny two your old, negative attention is better than none at all.

  20. fullmoon1 12/13/2009 at 10:02 PM #

I think if a player were having a heated exchange with someone in the crowd they would be rewarded with a tech. Sounds like a Carl Hess crew of officials. Roy deserved a “T” in my humble opinion.

  21. JKL 12/13/2009 at 10:03 PM #

Roy Williams > 1st Amendment Rights?

Apparently Roy Williams usurps UNC’s liberal ideology once you step into the Dean Dome.

  22. packgrad2000 12/13/2009 at 10:40 PM #

So this Presbyterian fan wasn’t being vulgar or yelling anything obscene, just yelled, “Miss it Deon?” Yeah, what a jerk.

I hope the State and Duke students have fun with this one…

  23. newt 12/13/2009 at 11:55 PM #

Bet money that the local media, especially the usual subjects on talk radio, rationalize away this episode and more. “Don’t you think he’s earned that kind of respect? Maybe fans do need to tone it down and show some common courtesy!” and crap like that.

  24. Lunatic Fringe 12/13/2009 at 11:55 PM #

What I learned today is that you can be clearly in the wrong & rude as long as you use the “awww shucks…I am from the mountains” defense.

NC State fans please remember to add that as a disclaimer for any signs you make for the UNC game.

    For Example:

    Roy you are A**hole!

“Disclamer: Please excuse any of the comments above since I am from the mountains”

  25. fullmoon1 12/14/2009 at 12:08 AM #

lol Fringe. I don’t know what was more disturbing, Roy yelling at an opposing fan and intimidating them or roy acting like a total douche in the press conference. I think that would be a good poll question.
