Awful Pack Handed Awful Loss

The ending was a perfect microcosm of the Keystone Kops effort by NC State. Wake was stopped dead to rights on 3rd and 6, but 2 (maybe 3) embarrassingly bad missed tackles later, and it’s first down Deacs. 30-24 is your final, and the game was not as close as the score would indicate.

Without question, this was the worst game (relative to personnel) of the Tom O’Brien era. The players and the coaching staff have alot to answer for after this one. Completely, absolutely, unequivocably inexcusable.

Someone else can cover the post-game quotes. I’m in no mood to hear a word of it.

“Some of you make me sick. You are f’n pathetic.”

What should make you sick is that “performance” our team put on today.
They were the ones that were pathetic.
It appeared as if they did not care.

I have yet to see a reason to believe TOB is the coach a lot of you think he is.

I’m 50 years old and I think I could return a kick 30-40 yards against our coverage teams.

  3. tjfoose2 10/03/2009 at 11:46 PM #

For all of you unhappy and wanting to take the entire team out, line ’em up, and shoot them dead…

You’ll see a much more improved, crisp effort next week against Duke. But do not think Duke will be an easy win, regardless of how well we play.

Duke is not a bad team, as their 26-34 loss to VT attests. I expect the game to be well played on both sides, probably high scoring. Both teams could be in the 30’s or 40’s.

I’m hoping for a win. I’m thinking the Wolfpack will win. But I am not expecting a win.

If the Wolfpack does not win, It’s scary to think how the comments here will regress.

From the wisdom, insight, and vision you have shared w/ us today, I believe you Rick. I’d venture to say there are lots of things you don’t see.

I don’t think Wake is anywhere near as bad as all you guys are saying they are. They’re well coached and disciplined- something our guys are showing a disturbing lack of recently.

Of the stupid penalties- how many were juniors and seniors?

I respect the hell out of David Cutcliffe, but losing to Duke next week is not acceptable under any circumstances. That program was the laughingstock of college football for years, and to think that he could take that bunch of misfits and in less than 2 years, rebuild them to the point that he could come into Carter-Finley and beat O’Brien’s team….well, I won’t even think about that any further.

  7. wolfdog1 10/04/2009 at 12:00 AM #

Im sorry but if anybody that looks at this and believes
that this coaching crew can ever get us in the top 25
or beat a top 25 team has got there head in the sand.
The sad part is that it will take about 7 or 8 years
for The WOLFPACK club to figure it out.

  8. tjfoose2 10/04/2009 at 12:15 AM #

Wolfdog1 – I’ll take that… $100 says we do one or both by end of next year. I’ll even give 2-1 odds.

  9. tjfoose2 10/04/2009 at 12:21 AM #

Chaos & Disorder – It’s quite possible. With the matchup problems we’ll have, and Cutcliffe being a coach who can exploit them, Duke could lay a lot of points on us next week. We may, may, have to outscore them to win.

To counter, I’d guess we’ll be sending pressure after Lewis all day. Hopefully making for a very long day for him, and not our secondary.

I will say that I haven’t read all of the comments. So apologies for repeating anything. But this is unbelievable. I have never seen a group of people abandon ship so quickly in my life. We played a bad game and lost to a pretty good (not great) team and all of the sudden the coaching staff is worthless and the team is terrible.

I don’t think I have time to type all of the thoughts I have about the performance and my issues with what is said here. Yeah it was a bad game, yeah we missed tackles and turned the ball over. The D line also played well and got numerous sacks. We also were able to come very close to winning a game even though we played poorly. In the preseason it was common knowledge we were a year or two away. A week ago TOB & Staff were the greatest thing to ever happen to NCSU football

If ridiculous, overstated posts and comments like this become the norm, I am definitely going to have to turn my attention elsewhere for NCSU sports opinions. Lets be realistic and level headed here. Look at the Miami played against VT last week. I bet if you were fans of the U you would have thought the world was ending. But just because they played a bad game last week, does not mean they are a bad team or their coaches are idiots, and hey, they won a big game this week.

  11. roanwolf 10/04/2009 at 12:38 AM #

Man UP, take a loss and build from it. I am glad I can watch a game without thinking that the world is going to end because we lost by 6. I am getting tired of reading this doomsday crap.
Carolina still sucks so watch some NFL tomorrow and get ready for a good game in CFS next week.

  12. wbnation 10/04/2009 at 12:56 AM #

I don’t think anyone is jumping ship or typing doomsday scenerios, but if you watched the game today you would really be worried about where THIS YEAR is headed. Now at the beginning of the season I figured we would be lucky to go .500, but to actually think that we have a real good chance of loosing to Duke is just unthinkable. We beat Wake last year and they had a much better team, if we lose to both Wake and Duke this year I would have to say the team is digressing not progressing, and that is very disturbing. Can you say basketball?

  13. packpigskinfan23 10/04/2009 at 1:54 AM #

this place is turning into a joke…

The team didnt play good today. Wake is a DECENT(not necessarily GOOD) team. It was a big game for both teams. NCSU is a DECENT(not necessarily good) team. Our coaches and players were not as prepared as they should have been…

Anyone who thought this team was going to go undefeated in the ACC or even only lose 2 games is insane.

We are at least a year away.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING- TOB IS A GOOD COACH. Anyone who thinks otherwise, needs to find another sport to follow.

TheAliasTroll Says: “I really just hate the connotation I’m getting from this post. It’s an “I give up” kind of post.”

It took a while for me to learn that on the eve of a disappointing lose, lots of people need to vent. A couple of wins and we’ll all be back behind the Pack. A couple of losses and what difference does it make?

    Go Pack

  15. crackdog 10/04/2009 at 7:11 AM #

I’m not sure why so many folks thought that we had the potential to have a “special” season… We have been missing some pretty big pieces on defense, and have an offensive line that’s still patchwork. We played a rotten, stupid game for sure, and lost on the road to a dangerous, wounded Wake team. TOB won’t stand for the idiotic penalties this whole season. He’s a good coach (his record has shown at least that much, right fellas?) and he’ll get it fixed.

The ceiling for the Pack is still where it was before the season started. Nothing has changed.

  16. tuckerdorm1983 10/04/2009 at 8:04 AM #

look, we are still a few years away from really being good. I believe in TOB and his long term vision. It will pay dividends. As for the basketball team, no comment.

  17. EdMar 10/04/2009 at 8:44 AM #

    Ok,
    – Tough loss to a pretty decent club.
    – Yes, we have a lot of things to work on.
    – We can still win a handful of games.
    – Not the end of the world

But please do not mention Basketball or I will get depressed.

It hard being a Wolfpack Fan! The only teams that are good to great year after year are the Cross Country and Rifle teams (MY FAVORITE COLLEGE SPORTS) :-), 🙂

Good point. I’ll make that my other favorite college sport.

The home game against Duke is by far the easiest game remaining on our schedule. If we can’t expect to win that one, then we truly are sunk as a program.

As noted, I am more readily willing to forgive losses (even blowouts) against teams that we have trouble matching up with physically. Thus, I expected us to lose at least 2 (if not all 3) against VT, Clemson, and FSU. But I expected us to play to the best of our abilities (and not take a metaphorical dump at midfield) against Wake, Duke, BC, Maryland, and UNC. We have to win at least 3 out of 5 against them (and probably 4 of 5) to have the BARE MINIMUM record for a plausible “bridge” season to where we want to be as a program. And we are already 0-for-1, and certain voices of “reason” are telling us to be prepared for 0-and-2? No way.

Tom O’Brien has a strong philosophy, and an equally strong track record (which is why I like the hire so much). That track record says that we should expect to see things starting to click in Year Three. You can’t miss out on a bowl, or God forbid, have a losing season in the freaking ACC and call that progress, or consider the bridge built.

And frankly, I think Tom O’Brien is a very good football coach, and is the last, best hope for us to have something good happen with respect to NC State athletics. That’s a large part of what makes me feel so much despair. If we’re still taking those midfield dumps that I referred to above in O’Brien’s third year, then we’re screwed. Totally.

NC State is NOT going to bring in a better football coach than Tom O’Brien. Remember, TOB sought US out, in a once in a lifetime lucky break. When we go out looking for revenue sport coaching “talent,” we bring back guys like Chuck Amato and Sidney Lowe. This was IT, folks. The last act.

And absolutely NOBODY close to the program expected any more than 5-7 seasons out of TOB before he retired. So it would be foolish to consider this an uber-long term project.

The margin of error for the rest of the season is razor thin. Tom O’Brien knows that, and I suggest that you all come to grips with it, too.

  21. wolfpacktexx 10/04/2009 at 10:10 AM #

Special teams – simply said, one of the worst in Diviosion 1.

When we score it almost plays in the other teams favor, Kicking game and special team defense -pathetic

So much for the 2009 “State Title” . Is anyone fully confident about a victory over Duke?

  22. wolfonthehill 10/04/2009 at 10:12 AM #

So I’m out west and (thankfully) couldn’t watch the game. From what everyone’s saying here, it sounds like this is one of the 2-3 games a year where Nate Irving could have been the difference between winning and losing… accurate statement?

  23. Chaos & Disorder 10/04/2009 at 10:40 AM #

We are losing a lot of quality talent after this season. If this team turns out to be another 6-6 team or worse, then all the “momentum” in the program that was gained at the end of last season is gone, and there’s no telling how bad we could be next year. That moves us forward to Year 5 of O’Brien’s tenure, and as BJD95 said, the man isn’t going to be here for 10-15 years. 5-7 was the word going around when he was hired. It is definitely possible that O’Brien could retire without ever getting us to EIGHT wins, let alone the 9 or 10 that a lot of fans are hoping for.

Ok people, I have had a day to fume over this loss and try to figure out what happened, some parts of our game was ok, other parts were very, very bad. But lets look at it from another perspective. I grew up in the winston-salem area and i have been going to see State play Wake in Winston for as long as I can remember and every game over there is a struggle. It seems like every team we have taken to Wake has played there worst game of the year when they step on that field, to the point it almost carries over every time a team goes over there, no matter who the coach or Qb is. I saw Rivers, one of the best QB’s in the NFL now, have one of his worst games over there. Even the times we took a far superior team over there, we have still struggled and barely won or lost. Maybe its in the minds of the players before they ever step foot on the field. I really though when we scored that first TD yesterday that things might be different, especially with Wake making mistakes like they did yesterday, but no, it happened again. Lets see how this team does against Duke before we really start blasting them over this loss, since losing at Wake is not a first time thing for the Wolfpack.

  25. rdjennin 10/04/2009 at 11:57 AM #

Well, like TOB says, I don’t think that things are as bad as they seem. With that being said, I remember sitting at the South Carolina saying to my buddy “I see no improvement from the Chuck Amato teams, they are playing exactly the same.” Every game since then I feel like that remark has been confirmed. The penalties, missed tackles, nothing has changed since the Chuck Amato era, except we don’t have as good of athletes on the field. Russell Wilson single handidly carries this team, if we had of given chuck another year, russell would probably had saved his job.

I think that Chuck Amato could have done just as well of a job as of right now.

But TOB teams tend to get better throughout the season, so heres looking forward to getting it together, sneaking into a bowl, the media covering us being a “hot” team that could make some moves next year, together with a spectacular spring game performance which gives us ridiculous expectations and allows us to experience an epic disappointment at the start of the season next year.

I’m not sure why we even watch, we all know whats going to happen next.
