Awful Pack Handed Awful Loss

The ending was a perfect microcosm of the Keystone Kops effort by NC State. Wake was stopped dead to rights on 3rd and 6, but 2 (maybe 3) embarrassingly bad missed tackles later, and it’s first down Deacs. 30-24 is your final, and the game was not as close as the score would indicate.

Without question, this was the worst game (relative to personnel) of the Tom O’Brien era. The players and the coaching staff have alot to answer for after this one. Completely, absolutely, unequivocably inexcusable.

Someone else can cover the post-game quotes. I’m in no mood to hear a word of it.

I think I liked it better when State had lesser players that overachieved.

Rick, no, I wasn’t going to call names. I just thought the answer to your question was obvious.

As posted on the forums site:

Our poor special teams play is a function of our depth issues, at least partially. I say ‘partially’ because there is no excuse for the drastically bad play of our kick coverage units.

Teams use their best players on offense and defense. In general, special teams are made up of the best remaining athletes, w/ potentially a few starters sprinkled in.

Usually, “the best remaining athletes” are comprised of younger inexperience players who are just as talented as the starters, and upper classmen who are not as talented but who have earned playing time on special teams through hard work and effort.

Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, depth issues have cause a huge overlap of those two populations.

    Generally speaking…

Instead of our best freshmen and sophomores looking for a way to make their mark on special teams, they are focused on trying to learn the intricacies of the offense and defense.

Instead of having a dozen Bobby Floyd’s* out there living to rip somebody’s head off on special teams, we only have 2 or 3 and they are playing significant roles on offense/defense.

What’s left for the special teams spots? Less talented and less athletic players, or… use more starters and 2 deep players. Which is what NC State will probably be doing for the rest of the season.

*I love Bobby Floyd (#31), he is the classic over-achiever. He leaves it on the field every week. Big hits, big effort, every game. If he were bigger, he could be an All ACC LB. But the very fact that he is starting at safety this week speaks to our depth problem.

That is why I like this site. I do get to learn something.

Thank you for the reply. I agree that there might but some talent issues but I also agree that talent alone does not explain how awful our special teams are.

I agree Rick, you are correct. Why I sure to include:

“I say ‘partially’ because there is no excuse for the drastically bad play of our kick coverage units.”

Look for more starters on, and big improvement in, our kick coverage teams against Duke.
