South Carolina Post-Game – The Perfect Blueprint

You have to hand it to the ol’ ball coach. He managed to do what nobody could in 2008 – stopped Russell Wilson cold. When asked by the media afterwards how he managed to bottle up Wilson like that, Spurrier exclaimed “We’ve got athletes!” That they do. But what almost nobody is able to to pull off is to have their athletes play with near perfect discipline and consistently execute the gameplan. That’s one hell of a coaching job.

South Carolina was bigger than NC State. South Carolina was faster than NC State. South Carolina was better coached than NC State. South Carolina had three trips to the red zone. NC State had ZERO. It was amazing that this game was even close.

Fortunately, we have no games remaining against SEC opponents. I doubt many other teams will bring the same athleticism and defensive speed to the table in 2009. So, all is not lost. As I’ve said all offseason, THIS is NOT “the year.” But 7-5 or 8-4 is possible, and it starts with beating Pitt on September 26. Do that, and we are still on track. Fail and it’s back to needing another Herculean effort to get back to respectability.

We’ll see what happens.

    Folks……..relax.

    1) State’s offensive tackles did not respond well to the speed on the corners, that is the majority of what you were seeing. Mattes and Larson had good games against the interior of the SC defense but the pressure on the outside allowed SC to bring 4 and drop 7 so in a dropped 7 you have floating linebackers to monitor Wilson.

Wilson looked a step slow but he also was facing up with linebackers facing him not running with a TE or a running back. The beaten lineman were not pealing back to help either. Most of this is an outlier of the end pressure.

Sure I wished Bible would have adjusted the play calls to bring the ball inside but when you are getting the ball on your 10, 12, 15, 17 yard lines respectively for each drive then you are going to play it tight and not turn the ball over. If you noticed, State’s interior line play started to pick up the pace in the 4th quarter. Tired legs on the ends for SC started to show up so the counter play was dealing with the over pursuit nicely.

    2) The defense looked decent but they did so against what will be one of the worst offenses in the SEC. Everyone noticed that when Archer brought pressure that SC wilted. The linebackers are not reading well at all. Audie Cole, unless he is blitzing, might read the worst of any player on defense and he does not bring energy to the ball unless he is on a blitz. He lacks the two step “bang” on a hit, that is something you’ve either got or you do not. Few of the players on State’s defense have a two step “bang”, Cash has got it, Willie has it a little, Nate had it a bunch but I’m not seeing it among the rest of the guys out there.

There was some very poor tackling and it cost the Pack a number of yards here and there. The back 7 looked how I thought they might look against an inexperienced QB.

    3) Rashard Smith is going to be a very nice player.

    4) SC has reached their ceiling IMO. They did not run the ball on State and they are not going to run the ball against the majority of the SEC teams they play. Garcia is about to face faster defenses that blitz ALL THE TIME and they can hit. Minus the fumble on the 12 yard line I’m not certain they even score tonight.

No credit taken from SC. They won the game and they deserve the credit for the win since they made the plays.

The team will get better. O’Brien will improve their play and they were fighting to win near the end.

Let’s stop the bitching and just let them go to work.

this game just looked to me like a pre-season nfl game. It seemed that Tob and Bible didn’t have a clear game plan mapped out. It was sporadic and confusing. It looked like they came into the game not really knowing what they had and instead were trying to figure it out on the fly. Try this, try that, see if this works, play this player see how this looks….it just seemed disjointed. I mean zero running game and or going away from it too early. Maybe I should give South Carolina some credit, and they deserve at least half, but again it looked like a pre-season game where your trying to figure out your depth chart. Maybe after they go back and look at film they will realize what they have and actually game plan for the next opponent.

Wilson was slow tonight, no question. He was one, maybe two steps slower tonight that he was last year. It was obvious, South Carolina’s D-linemen were running him down from behind all night. That was not the same Wilson (speed wise) that was the All ACC QB last year.

Anyone know the story? Is the knee still bothering him? Does the knee brace slow him down? Is he ill with the flu or something? Has the emphasis on not running gotten too much in his head so that he will no longer just tuck and run?

That being said, Wilson still made the plays to pull the game out at the end. He just didn’t get help from his teammates.

The good – Rashard Smith is gonna be a stud, Washington (from what little we saw of him) looks like the real deal at RB – definitely much quicker than our other RB’s. Cole made some plays, but also whiffed on some tackles – guess that’s to be expected from a converted QB. His tackling will get better.

Still questions about our secondary, they weren’t really tested. Still don’t think Maddox is the answer for replacing Irving, but we will see.

I am just wondering if you staff knows what the hell a screen pass is.

Test.. forgive me folks, but I wrote twice last night and just sent one off 2 min. ago and none of them have shown up. And I’m just testing the filters or too see if I’ve been banned?

I was looking forward to seeing Brandon Barnes play. Actually I expected to see him before Washington. Anyone know why Barnes didn’t play?

  9. wolfpack95 09/04/2009 at 12:51 AM #

Pitt’s D is as fast and talented as USC’s D.
If anything, the Pitt game could look very similar to what we saw tonight.

  10. TheCOWDOG 09/04/2009 at 12:59 AM #

OK, so much for that, sensetive filters I guess.

Look, McCallum stole the thunder on the OL play tonite while my missive went to Mars, but I found a great deal of disappointment with the unit that I touted as perhaps the best in the ACC a few weeks ago.

While it is true that SC floated 7, they still were in a modified cover 3, playing it deep and strong to Spencer. Great plan.

6 drops and some really poor route running against single coverage had a great deal, if not the end game deal in our loss tonite.

Hey, most of you know I have a receiver’s mentality and I gotta tell ya, we win tonight if they play like I know they can.

    The question about Wilson…

It seemed to me that he was indecisive. A couple of times I saw him scramble, stop to look for pass, start to scramble and get caught. It looked to me like he was thinking too much.

I’m really surprised the staff didn’t call some type of designated running play for Wilson..a bootleg or qb draw type play where he didn’t have to think.

    Defense played very well overall.

I’m certainly not an X&O ‘guy’, but it seems like that little handoff thing we do out of the shotgun, where the RB crosses in front of Wilson, is *very* slow to develop. The 3rd RB that came in (24, don’t remember the name) seemed to change that, and he hit the hole *fast*. Don’t know if it was some kind of timing issue or what.

I know they would have been circus catches, but we catch one of the 2-3 long passes that we got hands on and we win this game. At some point we have to make plays. They did, we didn’t.

Someone said these were SEC refs? So there it is ok to tackle a guy by the helmet and kick at players? Does any conference actually have competent officials?

  12. SMD 09/04/2009 at 1:03 AM #

There are many people on this board who can dissect the X’s and O’s much better than I – but my perspective is that it looked like our staff has taken the “Russell Wilson” out of Russell Wilson.

When RW and the team got hot last year is when he was rolling out and improvising somewhat. Tonight I could count on one hand the number of times he rolled out.

Now there may be a good reason for that – perhaps he has lost a step or two post-surgery and can no longer give us that Vick-style of play. (the athleticism – not the ghetto vibe… 😉 )

Whatever the reason – unless RW can be the QB he was last year – a threat to take off and run on you – then we’re in for a long year. And that’s what has me the most bummed – not the loss – but that we didn’t see any of the old offensive flair tonight. At least that is fun to watch even in a loss.

On another note – I really thought that TOB and his staff got outcoached. It’s fine to play Glennon for a series. But you’re going to put the kid in when we’ve got the ball on our own 7 yard line?

Last – someone has got to get the receiving corps some stick’em or something. There were way too many dropped balls, including the game winner. That is unacceptable.

We’ll be VERY fortunate to go 7-5. It all hinges on the Pitt game, which is now a must win if we are to do anything worth a damn this season.

Sport Center just predicted that the football team, outside of the top 10, most likely to play for the national championship is UNC. Are you kidding me!!

MatSci94 – #24 is James Washington (Orlando, FL), one of only 2 true freshman who played tonight; #2 Rashard “future stud” Smith being the other.

It wasn’t your imagination and it wasn’t timing… Washington is quicker to the hole than any of our backs… in fact, from the 2 or 3 plays I saw of him, he’s quicker than any back we’ve had since Anthony Barber… and maybe quicker.

Glad Baker is healthy, but he simply does not have the quicks to be a top line TB. He is magnifying our OL issues by hitting the hole a step or two slower than Eugene and Washington. He’d be a much better FB, and if he has any NFL aspirations, that is where his future is anyway. Interested to see what TOB does.

  16. hoop 09/04/2009 at 9:01 AM #

Well our team put in a good if ultimately losing effort. The funny thing was, as bad as we played, we could have easily won the game. One touchdown pass in the end zone could have changed everything. Then we would be talking about how the we escaped with a victory.

Russell Wilson is still a great quarterback but he looked awfully slow on the field tonight. He was caught from behind four different times by linemen or linebackers who have no business running as fast as Wilson. It’s possible Wilson just needs a little longer to get his knee healthy. I’m not sure what I hope for except to play better in future games.

  17. TOBtime 09/04/2009 at 9:09 AM #

We can dissect all we want but several comments already made summed up the whole game. RW looked slow. Was it because he is looking more downfield instead of to run? If we don’t get wideouts who can catch it won’t matter how much he looks. Can ANYONE other than Bryan catch a ball? There simply is no excuse for the SC defnder coming down with the ball in the end zone late in the 4th qtr. When you are 6 inches taller than a guy covering you have to WANMT IT MORE. I didn’t see anyone on offense want anything all night.
Defense surprised me. Lemon looked good and Willie Young, what else needs to be said. Secondary will get better and i like the blitz timing. It disrupted the SC timing several times.
Whoever said the defense of Pitt is as good as SC’s must know something know one else knows. Those guys are fast and big and speed is not something that gets mentioned or seen with Pitt.

Site is back up after some technical difficulties. An interesting stat: Wilson had 11 rushing attempts last night (damned college stats don’t break out sacks). In the 9 games Wilson played all or most of last season, he averaged 11.56 rushing attempts (low of 4 vs. FSU, high of 16 vs. Miami).

And the best looks we got all night came when Wilson bought time for mismatches/blown coverages to develop.

Too late a game for me, seems like a defense match up.
Spurrier was better, turn the page move on!

  20. BJD95 09/04/2009 at 9:14 AM #

The end zone play at the end was the combination of a great individual defensive play and a slightly underthrown ball. Wilson underthrew several passes tonight.

Here’s a sobering statistic. Last time NC State beat a non-ACC BCS team (excluding bowls) was…September 20th, 2003 against Texas Tech.

    9/03/2009 – South Carolina (L)
    9/27/2008 – South Florida (L)
    8/28/2008 – South Carolina (L)
    9/29/2007 – Louisville (L)
    9/18/2004 – Ohio State (L)
    9/20/2003 – Texas Tech (W)
    9/13/2003 – Ohio State (L)
    9/21/2002 – Texas Tech (W)
    9/06/2001 – Indiana (W)
    9/09/2000 – Indiana (W)

“I’m certainly not an X&O ‘guy’, but it seems like that little handoff thing we do out of the shotgun, where the RB crosses in front of Wilson, is *very* slow to develop.”

That’s called a draw play. It’s designed to be that way.

  23. Broccoman 09/04/2009 at 9:36 AM #

Yeah, honestly in the 4th quarter, I was about to say something along the lines of TOB’s a good coach in many areas, but playcalling isn’t one of them. We knew that coming in though.

Might as well play Glennon if Wilson’s going to be like that all year, but I think he’ll turn it around.

Today, I can definitely say with the playing that we weren’t playing to win. I’m blaming TOB and Bible for this loss more then the players.
(Again, I’m not trying to get the coach fired here, but he deserves fair criticism for the gameplan- he does a lot of things right, but tonight wasn’t his best night as a coach by far)

  24. jbwbubba 09/04/2009 at 9:46 AM #

Bottom line, is that Wilson didn’t look special last night. Last year he was special, especially in the second half of the season. Last night he was regularly run down by D-lineman. I thought at first it was the coaches attempt to make him play safe; had the effect of neutering him. However, I noticed on a few plays he just looked slow when attempting to get separation from a USC lineman. I don’t know if he’s hurt or still suffering effects of the bowl game knee injury; but something was off last night.

That and a FREAKING!!! WR that can catch a ball.

All said, it was amazing that the pack was even in the game late.

I thought the “CAROLINA” shirts worn by the State students was the “ultimate slam” on UNC! Funny!! UNC is referred to as the “un-Carolina” in Columbia!
