Miller changes his mind and accepts Arizona job?(updated 1:25pm)

Miller changes his mind.
(4/6/2009 1:05 PM Update)

One of the ideal fits to potentially become NC State’s head basketball coach if Coach Lowe were to head back to the NBA or not get the job done next season may be off the market. It appears Sean Miller has changed his mind and may in fact accept the Arizona position over a weekend when Lee “I have a contract and I know basketball” Fowler was not attending the Final Four in Detroit.

Sean Miller accepted the job as head coach of the Arizona Wildcats on Monday, one day after turning the position down, a source close to the negotiations told Yahoo! Sports.

Miller told Arizona he would remain at Xavier late last night, then asked for a chance to sleep on the decision. After going back and forth during the morning, a source said, he informed XU athletic director Mike Bobinski of his decision at noon ET.

MILLER EXPECTED TO SPURN ARIZONA (April 6, 2009 @ 12:40am)
I am the type of person who likes to have every possible option open to him when/if a decision needs to be made. If Coach Lowe struggles next season and it just so happens that the Wolfpack is in the market for a new basketball coach, I can’t help but proclaim that this is fantastic news knowing how highly Sean regards our job.

Sean Miller is expected to be the latest to spurn Arizona.

According to sources close to the situation, the Xavier head coach met with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood in New Mexico earlier today and has decided that – barring a last-minute change of heart – he will remain with the Musketeers.

Miller, 40, has spent the last five seasons as the head coach of the Musketeers and has made four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances – including an Elite Eight last season and a Sweet 16 this past year.

Miller joins USC’s Tim Floyd to meet with Livengood in the past few days and turn down what was once considered an elite program.

Livengood was also unsuccessful luring big names such as Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon and Gonzaga’s Mark Few.

Miller makes approximately $800,000 at Xavier and, according to sources, was offered more than $2 million a year in Tucson.

Now the Wildcats will need to find someone willing to take the job. According to sources, Utah’s Jim Boylen might be next in line.

SOURCES: ARIZONA TARGETS MILLER (April 4, 2009 @ 11:56am)

This story is worth following for a lot of reasons. There is a lot of Miller-related commentary in this discussion from a couple of days ago.

Arizona has zeroed in on Sean Miller.

What does make sense is Arizona’s newest target: Sean Miller.

While it may not appear to fit, he’s the ideal choice. In fact, long-term it could

Here’s why:

1) He’s 40 years old and could see the long-term picture for rebuilding in Tucson. A guy like Tim Floyd doesn’t want to get his head beaten in for two years at this stage of his career. Miller would be more apt to deal with that given that he could vie for Final Fours and maybe a national title somewhere down the line. Miller isn’t a stop-gap like some of the previous candidates (Floyd, Tubby Smith).

2) Miller can recruit. He’s a grinder who can evaluate talent (see: Derrick Brown, B.J. Raymond, etc.) and connects well with kids.

3) He can coach. Four straight NCAA tournament appearances – including a Sweet 16 this season with an unenviable point guard situation.

4) He would go toe-to-toe and wouldn’t be intimidated by any of the big boys out west – and in particular, UCLA’s Ben Howland.

Miller played at Pittsburgh and hasn’t coached anywhere out west, but he’d need to hire the right staff to get it done in Tucson. Obviously, bringing on now-Kentucky assistant Josh Pastner as his associate head coach would be huge (Pastner works for one of Miller’s closest friends, John Calipari).

Miller still hasn’t decided whether he’s going to meet with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood, but sources indicate he’s strongly considering it.

BJD, would you be astonished if our job takes more than 2 days to open up? Or maybe it won’t ‘open up’ at all?

Here’s what’s going to happen. Lee Fowler is going to step down as AD and become the Women’s Head Basketball coach, since he knows basketball and such. His key to building a winning team? Improved fuhcilitas. he will tear down Reynolds, and build a 50000 seat gymnasium for the women’s team. He’ll then sucker us fans into buying LTRs on the promise of “if we build it, championships will come”. Us State fans, being the gullable types we are, drink the koolaid, and foolishly open our checkbooks. “Coach” fowlup laughs all the way to the bank – one of those evil laughs….

Man – that would SUCK! Would it not?

anti^ isnt that what Lee already did to the entire athletics dept?

  4. DRW 04/06/2009 at 12:43 PM #

    Well, shit.

If the bb head coach job takes 2-5 years to “open up” we won’t have a bb program to rescue.

  6. jbpackfan 04/06/2009 at 12:49 PM #

I would expect that it will open up next year, or not at all. Lowe will either prove himself or move on.

  7. LKNpackfan 04/06/2009 at 12:56 PM #

I guess Archie talked him into it…
IMO, oh well. Just wished he could have delayed the decision for another couple of weeks. Currently, we don’t have a vacancy so there’s not too much to get upset over other than the fact that we don’t have a vacancy.

… and the ‘gold standard’ for coaching searches remains in tact. Many will forget about AZ search as soon as Miller takes over.

“If the bb head coach job takes 2-5 years to “open up” we won’t have a bb program to rescue.”

    ???

Honestly, what’s the difference in going 22 years or 25 years without an ACC championship?

Daily Update – Unfortunately, that’s kind of the Catch-22 we’re in. The good news is that Arizona has made it clear he was their 3rd choice. You never how things go – the AD (or new AD) could rub him the wrong way, he could hate the west coast…but yea, as I stated, we need him to have success, but his success would make him less likely to consider us since a move would be seen as a lateral move AT BEST.

Drats. Back to the drawing board.

This certainly means I’ll be watching the ASU/UA games every year from this point forward with great curiosity.

Does this mean we lose Larry Harris????

  12. GAWolf 04/06/2009 at 1:01 PM #

It’s also about a 250% raise for Miller. Good for him. I, for one, cannot blame him a bit.

  13. choppack1 04/06/2009 at 1:13 PM #

GA – of course you can’t. It’s not like he left our job for U of A.

    A) He doesn’t know if our job will come open.
    B) He doesn’t know if he’ll be our No 1 candidate.
    C) We don’t know if he’d want to come here (seeing as how he had little success here his first go round.)

Pipe dream…we hire him later this week and he never restructures squat.

    Pipe dream is dead…sigh…

  15. JeremyH 04/06/2009 at 1:25 PM #

Sean Miller, you had me at hello. You had me at… ell…o

  16. packalum44 04/06/2009 at 1:32 PM #

^ Haha. That’s funny. But true for most of us….

  17. Thompson44 04/06/2009 at 1:44 PM #

Apparently our BOT and Wolfpack Club Officers are happy with the job Fowler is doing. So if we are looking for a Savoir or a light at the end of the tunnel, keep on looking it is not gonna happen. At least we have Football but before we get to used to winning I am sure Fowler will do something to screw that up as well. It is sad when you have no confidence in the school you support, I mean Sad.

  18. GoldenChain 04/06/2009 at 1:47 PM #

This is funny. Seems like I mentioned Sean’s name on here a couple years ago and was told he’d never leave the Ohio Valley/Western PA area since he’s from there……now he’s going to Arizona. What the heck is his connection there? Is it that herb is in the state?
I’ve said all along that we needed to go the route of an up-n-coming mid-major coach.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$

I will be surprised if there is no “Sendek coaching tree” angle on the Miller hire at Sendek’s ostensible rival school.

  21. LKNpackfan 04/06/2009 at 1:54 PM #

GC, his brother Archie is at Az St with Sendek. That, and of course the moolah.

  22. Noah 04/06/2009 at 1:55 PM #

I don’t think there is any way in this world Miller was going to get that kind of coin out of us. Good luck to him.

  23. Daily Update 04/06/2009 at 1:55 PM #

Archie is at Ohio St. with Thad Matta.

  24. jbpackfan 04/06/2009 at 1:55 PM #

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Miller thing. There are plenty of other good coaches should we need one in a year. I’d be more concerned with who is handling the search.
