Miller changes his mind and accepts Arizona job?(updated 1:25pm)

Miller changes his mind.
(4/6/2009 1:05 PM Update)

One of the ideal fits to potentially become NC State’s head basketball coach if Coach Lowe were to head back to the NBA or not get the job done next season may be off the market. It appears Sean Miller has changed his mind and may in fact accept the Arizona position over a weekend when Lee “I have a contract and I know basketball” Fowler was not attending the Final Four in Detroit.

Sean Miller accepted the job as head coach of the Arizona Wildcats on Monday, one day after turning the position down, a source close to the negotiations told Yahoo! Sports.

Miller told Arizona he would remain at Xavier late last night, then asked for a chance to sleep on the decision. After going back and forth during the morning, a source said, he informed XU athletic director Mike Bobinski of his decision at noon ET.

MILLER EXPECTED TO SPURN ARIZONA (April 6, 2009 @ 12:40am)
I am the type of person who likes to have every possible option open to him when/if a decision needs to be made. If Coach Lowe struggles next season and it just so happens that the Wolfpack is in the market for a new basketball coach, I can’t help but proclaim that this is fantastic news knowing how highly Sean regards our job.

Sean Miller is expected to be the latest to spurn Arizona.

According to sources close to the situation, the Xavier head coach met with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood in New Mexico earlier today and has decided that – barring a last-minute change of heart – he will remain with the Musketeers.

Miller, 40, has spent the last five seasons as the head coach of the Musketeers and has made four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances – including an Elite Eight last season and a Sweet 16 this past year.

Miller joins USC’s Tim Floyd to meet with Livengood in the past few days and turn down what was once considered an elite program.

Livengood was also unsuccessful luring big names such as Pittsburgh’s Jamie Dixon and Gonzaga’s Mark Few.

Miller makes approximately $800,000 at Xavier and, according to sources, was offered more than $2 million a year in Tucson.

Now the Wildcats will need to find someone willing to take the job. According to sources, Utah’s Jim Boylen might be next in line.

SOURCES: ARIZONA TARGETS MILLER (April 4, 2009 @ 11:56am)

This story is worth following for a lot of reasons. There is a lot of Miller-related commentary in this discussion from a couple of days ago.

Arizona has zeroed in on Sean Miller.

What does make sense is Arizona’s newest target: Sean Miller.

While it may not appear to fit, he’s the ideal choice. In fact, long-term it could

Here’s why:

1) He’s 40 years old and could see the long-term picture for rebuilding in Tucson. A guy like Tim Floyd doesn’t want to get his head beaten in for two years at this stage of his career. Miller would be more apt to deal with that given that he could vie for Final Fours and maybe a national title somewhere down the line. Miller isn’t a stop-gap like some of the previous candidates (Floyd, Tubby Smith).

2) Miller can recruit. He’s a grinder who can evaluate talent (see: Derrick Brown, B.J. Raymond, etc.) and connects well with kids.

3) He can coach. Four straight NCAA tournament appearances – including a Sweet 16 this season with an unenviable point guard situation.

4) He would go toe-to-toe and wouldn’t be intimidated by any of the big boys out west – and in particular, UCLA’s Ben Howland.

Miller played at Pittsburgh and hasn’t coached anywhere out west, but he’d need to hire the right staff to get it done in Tucson. Obviously, bringing on now-Kentucky assistant Josh Pastner as his associate head coach would be huge (Pastner works for one of Miller’s closest friends, John Calipari).

Miller still hasn’t decided whether he’s going to meet with Arizona athletic director Jim Livengood, but sources indicate he’s strongly considering it.

Doesn’t seem like TOB’s style. He is a football coach first and foremost. When asked about ticket sales for the bowl game he commented (I paraphrase), “I don’t know how many tickets we’ve sold. That’s not my department.” I wonder how TOB would feel if Miller were to get hired for $2 million a year at 40 years old when he’s making 1.2-1.8?

Sounds good to my ears though so I choose to believe it.

    FYI:
David Thompson spotted at the McDonalds in Cameron Village in a 7 series BMW. What’s he doing in town? Here for the big announcement…

I don’t know if I would ever believe that TOB rumor in a hundred years, but I do believe our athletics department is a mess right now, and anyone with some valid experience willing to step up and make some decisions would be a much welcomed change. There is no denying that our level of success in all phases of athletics is nowhere close to being what it should at a University like NC State and the way things are run at NC State have a lot to do with that lack of success.

I’m in agreement with Chop also regarding Arizona’s coaching search. It’s inexcusable for them to be in the position they are in. If any AD deserves to be fired, it’s Zona’s. It’s not even like Carolina’s situation, in which they were given short notice to replace Dean. Arizona has had almost a full season to get ready. Inexcusable.

Were going to try a new set of alumni coaches. DT will be the head coach and Corch will be his top assistant. Folks this is a can’t miss strategy.

“I wonder how TOB would feel if Miller were to get hired for $2 million a year at 40 years old when he’s making 1.2-1.8?”

He seems to be the type that wouldn’t care insofar as what it meant to him. He’s more the type of person that would say “would you mind taking the difference and spreading it out amongst my staff.”

Oops…now reports say Miller will take the job…

  6. CStanley 04/06/2009 at 12:01 PM #

    Well shit.

    Shit.

First the Fowler thing from Friday (which may still happen at some point), and now this… How can we continue to collectively f things up??

  9. Thompson44 04/06/2009 at 12:05 PM #

So rest easy Wolfpack Nation, Miller is gone to Arizona so we can all quit thinking about the what if and start to focus on the reality that Sid needs our support. If things don’t work out next year then I am sure you will all have new opinions on who should be the next Coach, but does it really matter? Someone will want to Coach this team and compete against K and Huckleberry Hound (Royboy that is)but until then we have a Coach and for better or worse we will watch him next year as well. I love the Pack and always will I just hope that sometime soon we will return to the upper echelon of the ACC, which is where we belong.

Maybe he took this job because we are getting Rick Barnes?

“Maybe he took this job because we are getting Rick Barnes?”

    Dare to dream!!!

  13. ncsu0812 04/06/2009 at 12:09 PM #

^Well that would be the obvious explanation for him taking the job.

  14. jbpackfan 04/06/2009 at 12:09 PM #

Yes, clearly that is what happened.

  15. JeremyH 04/06/2009 at 12:11 PM #

damn where is the edit button, the parfait was spurned first!

This may not be too bad for us depending on when our job opens up.

If the job opens up next year – it’s not good. However, if the job opens up in 2 to 5 years, we’ll actually know more about Miller’s ability to coach on a national stage.

BJD: I would be flat-out astonished if it takes that long for our job to open up.

Unlike his situation at Xavier, Zona is not the top program in the conference. Arizona should definitely be an upper-tier program, but they certainly aren’t UCLA. He’ll also be going against UW who has established themselves as a solid program, USC – who is bringing in a good bit of talent, ASU, and Cal.

If Miller can bring Arizona back to the top 1 or 2 progams in teh conference – we’ll know he’s a heck of a coach. If Arizona continues to go 9-9 (or somewhere in that neighborhood) in the Pac-10, we’ll know that he’s an OK coach, but will not likely meet our high expectations.

Of course, if he does succeed in grand fashion, he’ll be that much harder to bring in…

I like the way “Daily Update” thinks! Could we construe that to be an educated guess… If we were to get Barnes I think I would faint like a 16 year old girl at a Beatles concert. 🙂

  18. jbpackfan 04/06/2009 at 12:21 PM #

I did see a burnt orange SUV with oversized tires and a Texas license plate that reads “HOOKEM” driving down Hillsborough Street this morning.

Someone out there please tell me if you can now see the edit buttons. I can and they work…for me.

  20. ncsu0812 04/06/2009 at 12:22 PM #

^Depending on how next season goes; I would flat out be pissed off if it takes that long for our job to open up.

  21. TOBtime 04/06/2009 at 12:22 PM #

Great. Just more icing on this cake made of s**t. And no mention of an AD departure? I know, wait and see how it all plays out.
What else could possibly be better news on a Monday when seemingly half the people you see out at lunch are wearing pansy blue without even knowing how to get to chapel hole. Go Spartans.

  22. TOBtime 04/06/2009 at 12:23 PM #

Alpha, I can see the edit button.

And it worked for me as well.

  23. Daily Update 04/06/2009 at 12:26 PM #

Choppack: NC State isn’t in position to allow a coach like Miller to prove he is a great coach at a place like Arizona. There is no way a coach is going to leave Arizona or any other similar program to come to NC State.

We have to hire coaches before they are known to be great and are somewhere that moving to NC State makes sense.

  24. Tampa-Pack 04/06/2009 at 12:26 PM #

We can only hpe this means we have an even better option lined up, and let Sean know accordingly (hince him taking the AZ job). Oh yeah, that’s right…nevermind….

  25. Tampa-Pack 04/06/2009 at 12:29 PM #

Maybe its my red sunglasses, but I feel NC State in the ACC is a better job than any PAC-10 jobs, sans UCLA. Of course, at this point it doesn’t matter, the timing won’t work on this chance.
