Coping With Another Hole Title (Updated 9am Tuesday)

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina. Every program in the country doesn’t do well when you’re compared with those two on a day-to-day basis. I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Don’t ignore yesterday’s look-in at all sports…but, this morning we have to discuss a little basketball.

Tuesday Update
When NC State gave up basketball in 1990 – the Wolfpack held two National Championships; UNC-CH held two, and Duke held none.

When Lee Fowler was hired as Athletics Director a decade ago – the Wolfpack held two National Championships, UNC-CH held three, and Duke held two.

After ten years of (lack of leadership) from Lee “I know basketball and I have a contract” Fowler – the Wolfpack STILL holds two National Championships, UNC-CH now has five, and Duke now has three.

Great work managing that program, Lee! I could only imagine where we would be if you didn’t ‘know basketball’!

We wrote this highly-trafficked entry when the Tarheels won their National Championship in 2005. We implore you to click on it and give it a read (the charts no longer work) as we see no reason to bust our ass to update it this morning since it still couldn’t be more relevant this morning. The following is a taste:

Good morning, sleepy head!!!

Did you sleep well? Heck, did you sleep at all? Regardless of if you tossed and turned all night, you have awoken to a New World Order!!! Sounds kind of ominous, doesn’t it? No matter, it is true –

You now live in an environment and under a set of circumstances that have LITERALLY NEVER existed as they do today — April 5, 2005. April 7, 2009.

For many, this N.W.O. is nothing that you haven’t felt inside or intuitively known since…oh….about 1995 or so. But, having ‘felt’ it for a decade still may not compensate or serve to ease many Wolfpackers pain this morning. You went to bed last night without letting all of the ramifications of your arch-rival’s newly minted National Championship sink into your system, and you have woken this morning to a landscape that has never existed in the history of NC State’s Basketball program.

As of THIS MORNING, NC State is further behind UNC-CH in National Basketball Titles (and ACC Titles) than we have been at any point in the entire history of college basketball. Additionally, there has never been a day on this earth where BOTH Carolina and Duke held this lead in ACC and National Championships over NC State.

Think about that for a moment…especially you jackasses that constantly degrade our tradition because you can’t grasp its magnitude…and you Fowlerites and Kennellites who openly proclaim that NC State athletics should not strive to contend for Championships or measure to the standards of Carolina and Duke. (I wish that someone would have told us this was NC State’s “not goal” [since we don’t have any goals or measurements] BEFORE we were solicited to pony-up tens of thousands of dollars just to sit in dead arena and watch the college version of the Washington Generals go out and tackle one of the nations worst non-conference schedules on an annual basis.)

[snip]

Lee Fowler is our Athletics Director, and as of THIS MORNING, the Athletics Department that he leads has NEVER, EVER been further behind Carolina’s and Duke’s in championships.

Surely you don’t wonder why this could be the case.

BJD on Monday night
As I have watched UNC play defense all tournament long and dispatch opponents with shocking ease, I have made my piece with Roy Boy getting his second ring. I sure as hell don’t like it, but I can accept it. Suggested coping methods (put yours in the comments):

1) Grudgingly admit that UNC is a worthy champion. Other than Hansbrough’s whiny antics, I have no real disgust for any of their players. They play hard, play together, and keep up an entertaining pace. Contrast that to Deano’s peak years.

2) It will really piss off Coach K. Roy’s run in Chapel Hill is making K so jealous that I believe he would blow Dwon Clifton on TV to sign John Wall. Sorry for the nightmare fuel. As queasy as we will be around 11:28 pm, you can take comfort that at least one man will be even more inconsolable.

3) Feel good for the nice Hole fans that you know. As you know, Hole fans are more prevalent than flies on dogshit in mid-August. Because the sheer numbers are so high, you have to know at least a few that you don’t want to punch. If you’re local, it’s possible a subset of those fans (well, probably all of them) actually went to school there. If you live in Boston, these are probably the same people who pretend that they liked the Patriots before they were good (and strangely don’t know who Steve Grogan is).

That’s all I have. Thank God it will be all over soon, save for the gayest riot you’ve ever seen.

I am a student right now and I know that I would definitely be willing to participate in something like that. The students are frustrated that we are not succeeding right now. However, I fear that apathy is spreading faster than frustration. A good portion of students simply do not care about basketball anymore and it is rare to find a student who keeps up with any non-revenue sports. If the students are to participate in a demonstration such as this, they need to be made aware of the fact that our Athletic Department is a giant cluster-f*** right now. Perhaps a series of editorials in the Technician would make students more aware of this. But right now, a lot of people just accept that we suck at most sports without asking many questions as to why. I plan on making my opinions clear to the Technician soon. I hope other students on SFN will do the same.

BJD: Maybe there is a REASON your nemesis and many others have concerns, and maybe it’s not fabricated? Certainly you could understand why we wouldn’t post details about that kind of stuff. That doesn’t mean it’s fabricated.

Congratulations to whitefang and highstick. Both had great posts that I copied and placed again below. These posts summarize my total disdain for 99.9% of Carowhina, Tarhole, UNX fans. I will never pull for UNX in anything against any other team, period.

    whitefang:
“I couldn’t pull for UNC if they were playing against the Iranian national team coached by Kim Jong Ill and Amadinejad was playing point.

What really gets me is not necessarily the fans that went there – I have a young UNC grad who works for me. Great guy and doesn’t take it too seriously. He even says he gets tired of some of the fans. Contrast that to a guy I saw Sat. at a sandwich shop. I went to HS with this guy. Dumb as a bag of hammers. Didn’t even go to college. He’s got a freaking UNC warm-up suit on complete with a UNC t-shirt underneath the jacket and a carolina hat. Made me want to puke. Now this guy couldn’t find Chapel Hill on a map and he is talking shit the whole time.
I’m going to the drive-thru window this morning.”

    highstick:
“I didn’t watch last night and woke up hoping for a miracle! No such luck! I offer no congratulations to them though cause their fans are everything I dislike about humanity!”

Keep up the good work men!!

“I once went to Chapel Hill to Carmichael with a few buddies to pull for the Soviet National Team.”

Alpha Wolf; I certainly hope that you and your buddies enjoyed a victory by the “Soviet National Team”. Either way, victory or defeat, I trust that it was a very enjoyable experience. The only thing that is equally satisfying as a tarhole loss is wolfpack victory.

^^^Red, don’t know if you are right but why the hell do people think any athletes grades are any of their business? I’ve never understood why people think athletes grades should be public knowledge. Admission standards are fair game but once a student is in school his grades are between his family, coach and the university and have nothing to do with fans. Would you want your child’s grades discussed online? This obsession with young adults grades is kind of sick and really no one’s business. And why the hell would you care anyway?

Lowe should be given some time to build a program just like Robinson and Sendek were given time.

With all due respect, I think it’s fair to say that most Wolfpack fans, whether they were a “fan” of Robinson and Sendek or not, would venture to say we ought to shoot for far higher standards than those two guys brought to the table. Lowe hasn’t exactly lit it up in three years on the job, and there is legitimate cause for concern for what the fourth year may hold.

I do NOT suscribe to the argument that since many of our previous coaches haven’t met the standard, that this means that NOBODY can. If I felt that way, I would stop watching Wolfpack sports all together today.

Run a professional search, pay the big money, bring in a proven winner, and watch the improvement take place.

ncsu0812 – Like you I am a current student, and led a group of students last year for this sole purpose. We had a club “SAE – Students for Athletic Excellence” that met to discuss and publicize this shortcomings within the entire department. We had problems with exposure, and eventually I had to go to Jay Dawkins to set up a meeting with the Technician. Of course, this ran ONLY online, but Fowler was notified that we met to hash out his piss-poor job. His reaction? “I wish I had known of this, I would have been glad to speak with these students about our athletic department.” I tried contacting him to speak with him personally, but of course was shut down by his lackeys each time. I’m afraid the only things that speaks to this administration are dollars and the status quo. If they are still getting money in, they’re fine…and if there aren’t riots in the brickyard, they’re fine. Unfortunately the University as a whole is doing all it can to quell the malcontent within it.

Redfred, I can’t say whether you are right or wrong because you won’t ever quote exactly what you are upset about. I also don’t see you posting any facts to counter anyone…..you just start yelling, claim that people are making stuff up, and calling people names…or worse yet, a UNC fan.

Address the comments that you don’t like directly. Do it once….and then drop it until whatever you don’t like is repeated.

Like I said above inside one of your previous comments….I think that you are being played like a fiddle. Don’t make it so easy (just free advice).

    Wulfpack,

Which proven coach do you think State should hire? If in the off chance State finds one that wants to come how is he going to be paid? Do you think State should go after a coach winning in the mid-majors and hope he can win in the ACC and in the Triangle?

Grant was a mid-major coach who excelled at VCU. He’s now coaching at the basketball factory at Alabama.

Fox was a mid-major coach who did very well at Nevada. He’s now coaching at the basketball factory at Georgia.

Miller was a coach WITH TIES to N.C. State, who had a great run at Xavier, and he decided to run off to Arizona. A very good job, I am not debating that. But if we are in the position where we need to make a change in a year or two, he’s essentially off limits given that he’s going to get $2 million a year.

Bennett did a great job rebuilding Wazzou. He comes from a basketball family and has excelled at every stop along the way. He left for UVA.

To answer your question, I don’t know now who exactly we should hire, but I can tell you they are out there. We just aren’t looking.

  15. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 04/07/2009 at 7:56 PM #

Wulf, What I’m saying is State isn’t going to get a championship coach. And like every other ACC hire it will be hit or miss. State could get lucky and find a V, K, Barns, Odem or G. Williams but more than likely will end up with another one of the many other guys that looked good and failed. The ACC is full of history with coaches that looked good but didn’t win. Probably the reason Fowler didn’t fire Sendek is because he knew he couldn’t get anyone better.

Maybe we should riot in the brickyard!
I just feel that the students have a responsibility to show their frustration if they are not pleased with the way things are going. It sounds like what you did last year was exactly what needs to continue to happen in order for the student body as a whole to take some initiative. I think a lot of kids at this school are completely in the dark when it comes to what is happening in our AD. We should all take a look at the school 20 minutes down the road and ask why WE can’t have a night like they did last night. WE are NC State’s most passionate fans. WE show up to the games early and stay until the end. WE wake up at 5:30 in the morning to get tickets (SWPC members at least.) WE camp out in 9 degree weather for UNC tickets. Without us, there is no NC State. Maybe WE are the ones that can really make a splash and make someone notice that we are getting more and more frustrated. If more students realize that it doesn’t HAVE to be this way; more students will be willing to say something about it.

Maybe you have given rebuttals, but I haven’t seen them. BTW, rebuttals are done with conflicting information or facts…which I haven’t seen them in your little private war with Noah.

All I have seen from you recently is yelling and name calling. To be honest, it’s gotten so bad, that I don’t even read all of your diatribes any more….so it’s possible that I missed your real rebuttals among all of the other stuff.

I should know better… anytime an entry refers to a multiple-year-old entry that’s referred to as a “must-read”, reading that archived entry only serves to infuriate me further…

  19. highstick 04/07/2009 at 8:41 PM #

Thanks, Wolfpack4evermore! Wow, I certainly didn’t think my post was worth an award, but it’s the way I feel today and I just let “another one of their bandwagon fans” have it on the phone a while ago. Freakin’ ECU grad thinks I should pull for Carowhina just because they are from Carowhina! Screw ’em! Play real basketball, not the crap that’s played nowadays! Hope their fans and the media all catch an STD loving each other today!

Llama, Man, those are great inspirational pictures!!! The Interweb where “those folks are just plain mean”!!! LOL!!

You young guys are making me really feel old. Any of you guys born in the old Rex Hospital in Raleigh in 73 or so? My wife may have delivered you!!!

Someone mentioned “apathy” among the students. That’s been a State trait since before I was a student. I think the panty raid on St. Mary’s and the fire at Holliday Hall created more unity than anything else back then!

Did anyone on this site go to the WPC caravan in Charlotte last night? Or did everyone stay home and watch Carolina? I’ll get the details Thursday night from someone who was there, but I’m curious who was there besides TOB.

I am not looking forward to having to go into the office sometime this week for a software upgrade. I’m hoping I can sneak in and out and only have to deal with an App. State grad!

  20. bb1983 04/07/2009 at 8:52 PM #

redfred – dude. Seriously. First let me say that I agree with the sentiment that people are too trigger happy in criticizing Lowe, and that it could be damaging to the program if things get too public.

But dude. Seriously. I got curious and searched your comments. You are overly upset over something, and insist that something is wrong with somebody, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what. If for no other reason than to satisfy my curiosity, would you please calm down and explain yourself? I think we all want to hear what you have to say, but in a calm, well thought-out manner rather than an angry rant.

It does not help to say “I know something you don’t but can’t tell you about it.” We all do. Its not that we don’t believe you, it just isn’t that helpful.

I think I gathered that you might (or might not) know of a recruit who might (or might not) have read this board and might (…) be influenced in his decision by what we say. Therefore we should be careful. You are right. We should be more careful.

If a recruit is reading this: Please disregard most of what we say. We are the lunatic fringe, and we typically don’t know what we’re talking about. We just like to entertain ourselves. NC State will welcome you with open arms, and the program you are joining will stay intact. Don’t let us scare you off, we’re all bark and no bite.

^ Llama Man, those posters are just too funny. You need to trademark those bad boys. And yes, sometimes funny can be mean; but, when you’re a public figure, you’re fair game (except your family of course). Maybe you can work some fishing stuff in there too. Another suggestion, your posters would make great T-shirt material. If the rumor of last week turns out to be just that, I might make myself one and wear it to the next game I attended. Think they’d kick me out of Carter Findley?

Apathy? You mean like I could have cared less for anything but football and basketball. Tennis? I thought that was something the pansies at UNX played. I knew that Don Easterling — that was one funny sombitch — was coaching some serious swim teams but that’s about it. Funny, Football is all that really matters to me now. It’s been that way since the days of David Thompson ended. We just didn’t keep that level of play up.
    `
It shouldn’t be this way but I had rather go to watch Spring Practice than most any other collegiate sport. And I have really gotten into the Canes hockey. They crushed the New York Islanders tonight 9-0. The shot difference was 57 to 12. At one point late in the 3rd period the Canes had as many goals and the Islanders had shots. I know this doesn’t belong here but I have never seen such professional domination in my freakin life.

  23. VaWolf82 04/07/2009 at 9:48 PM #

It takes more than a coach to create, and sustain, a PROGRAM.

Yes it does, but State has everything that it needs to succeed at FB AND BB outside of coaching. State has the facilities, financially loyal fans, and plays in a great conference. There is not a single athletic team at State that lacks anything besides a coach and possibly the time for a coach to build a successful program.

The AD, chancellor, BOT, etc can possibly help….but are not necessary to have a successful program.

I long since quit reading his posts. They are long and virulent.

  25. highstick 04/08/2009 at 4:50 PM #

Greywolf, the apathy goes beyond sports at State…it was in the political scene at State too. I guess “we” did rise a bit when they tried to make us UNC-Raleigh, but that mindset has been in the State student body for a long time. Granted you can probably attribute that to the predominance of “analytical personality types”, but that’s just a guess. Heck, maybe that’s a positive cause you can tell there’s more analysis and thought put into posts on this site than a lot of others.

Turned to the Canes game last night at it was 7-0 at the time. Hope they can make another run at Lord Stanley this year! I have been wearing my Stanley Cup hat lately since I’m embarrassed to wear the red one!
