Brandon Tate Doesn’t Test Positive at UNC, Tests Positive for Smoking Weed in NFL

Wide receivers Percy Harvin and Brandon Tate tested positive for marijuana during February’s NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, two sources told FOXSports.com.

Wow. All of those years in Chapel Hill and he just now starts using weed?

So, Hakeem Nicks matriculates towards graduation with an intelligence barely high enough to make him intellectually functional on a daily basis and now this?! You should click here for more.

College drug tests are usually pretty easy to beat. Not everyone gets tested, you usually know when your test is coming up and they let you go into the stall and fill up your cup in private.

When you go to the combine…uhh…let’s just say that you can’t claim to be p***-shy.

Were they ‘postive’ results, or ‘B.J. Raji Positives’?…

Both will still be drafted, though their agents definitely lose some fiancial leverage in the ‘my client is disciplined and makes informed choices’ department…

There’s also the possibility that he didn’t do it while in college at UNC, but did it after the bowls ended and thought he had enough time to get it out of his system before draft day.

Although that would require a fair bit of planning and timing just to smoke some weed.

  4. Alpha Wolf 04/22/2009 at 8:05 AM #

Man smoked a little dope. Like many of us never did THAT in college!

Of course, in my world of pre-employment and random screenings, I wouldn’t light a bowl because there is too much for me to lose…even if I didn’t remember how it made me a lazy Cheetoh eater who watched a lot of TV and thought it was a really cool way to waste the day. Got no time for that now.

Tate probably thought he was smart enough to beat an even tougher system than the one I deal with, and he lost. Not so smart, with millions of bucks on the line.

Me, I think they need to legalize the stuff and tax the hell out of it. I’d sooner trust a man who had done five bong-hits than one who had drank a pint of cheap whisky.

    Great headline.

Alpha…who knew? Something we can agree on. 🙂

Someone has been hanging out with Will Graves.

Hole fans have warned us, and now it appears it is happening.

Clearly, the transformation into U(NC)Miami is nearing its completion. I can hardly wait for the slew of assault, posession and theft charges…maybe the on-field fights can begin with ECU this year?

  9. Wolf Dog 04/22/2009 at 8:38 AM #

Sure them UNX boys totally innocent. I mean the Chief lets em smokum peace pipe? Shouldn’t the NFL?

  10. ppack3 04/22/2009 at 8:48 AM #

You always knew some bone-head that thought they could beat the drug test. This type of guy had multiple ‘sure fire’ methods. Some involved vinegar, or some tea that you had to go to Durham to get. Ultimately, this guy was asking you to borrow some money because his job opportunity ‘fell through.’ I actually knew a guy that tried to tell the examiner that he was around some people that were smoking weed! The doctor says, “Not unless you were all sitting in a pickle jar!” Too funny.
Brandon may or may not be ‘that guy’ but with so much on the line, it sure seems like he’s a candidate! So, Brandon, don’t come begging me for five dollars when you run out of beer and Cheetoh’s, because you’re getting no sympathy from me, dumb ass.
BTW, I totally agree with Alpha. Legalize it. Tax it. Stop the needless and expensive efforts to stop people from growing and selling it. Could you imagine all of the NC tobacco fields that have gone dry, turning their soil again to produce marijuana. It would become our Cash Crop, legally. I’m just saying, instead of “Tobacco Road”…..

Tate follows a well documented group of UNX athletes that been busted or caught with drugs/weed once they left Chapel Hill. Wallace, Perkins, Taylor, J R Weed, Tate……

Amazing how they never caught in college. Guess all them pine trees hide the smoke rising on the Hill.

I’ve always thought that if anyone should be smoking weed it’s football players. They push their bodies to the limit every day and need some relief. It beats becoming an alcoholic or getting hooked on pain meds.
Unfortunately I don’t see the US legalizing it any time soon. We pumped too many billions of dollars into Central and South America policing their drug policies to be like – ooooops… carry on growing it.

There has always been a lot of weed in Chapel Hill, which doesn’t really bother me except they act like it’s Pleasantville.

State has always been more of a drinking school than weed school.

So in a Carolina dorm room, you might see a Grateful Dead banner on the wall and at State you would find a beer can pyramid in the corner (and a picture of Heather Thomas on the wall).

  14. Mike 04/22/2009 at 9:42 AM #

IDIOT! No way do you take the chance before the combine, KNOWING you will be tested. Wolf Dog, you mention Butch, but even the previous administration had several instances where players were booted for the stuff. There has been a big problem over there with the stuff, and my hunch is this was not the first time he smoked the stuff. He will still get his shot at the NFL, but it cost him a lot of $$$.

  15. Gene 04/22/2009 at 9:52 AM #

Could you imagine all of the NC tobacco fields that have gone dry, turning their soil again to produce marijuana.

There were some studies done recently about the effect of marijuana smoke on your lungs and not surprisingly inhaling smoke isn’t good for your lungs, whether it’s tobacco or pot.

I have nothing against legalizing pot, but it will be interesting to see what the long term health risks are, if it is legalized because there will be some and the lobbying done to further control / tax pot because of these health risks.

On the flip side, I don’t know many people who started smoking pot as kids, who still need to smoke as adults, unlike tobacco products. Maybe there won’t be any lasting long term effects, because there are very few long term, regular, users.

  16. choppack1 04/22/2009 at 10:04 AM #

Gene – perhaps that’s because of the associations you have to keep and the chances you’d have to take to do it. It’s a lot easier to go to the ABC store/grocery or local bar.

Like others, I don’t have a problem w/ legalization, but with legalizations will come increased use and increased problems as a result of that increased use. These problems may not be as devastating as alcohol, but there will definitely be some lives and families wrecked because of it.

  17. Alpha Wolf 04/22/2009 at 10:20 AM #

^ As opposed to widespread illegal usage?

I’m no fan of smoking the chronic long-term, but it’s not like prohibition has worked. It’s given rise to an illegal economy just like the Prohibition of alcohol did today. In my opinion, that’s given rise to the lives and families that have been wrecked by marijuana.

  18. TOBtime 04/22/2009 at 10:20 AM #

Chop, I agree with you. Funny how weed and the new evil-tobacco- are regarded as so dangerous yet we continue to allow people to purchase alcohol and then kill others on our state tax-supported highways and roads. Most recent example was in Bladen county this past weekend.

  19. Sw0rdf1sh 04/22/2009 at 10:21 AM #

Tate watched Family Guy last weekend and realized it was 420 and blazed.

    Blame it on Seth McFarland.

  20. choppack1 04/22/2009 at 10:29 AM #

Alpha – I definitely see where you are coming from, but the fact of the matter is that you’ll see a dramatic spike in usage, you’ll probably see an increase in auto accidents caused by it, poor work performance caused by it, etc. etc. etc.

As someone who believes in the freedom of the individual, I favor legalization or at least decriminalization, but the picture painted by the legalization movement is a fairy tale.

  21. Dr. BadgerPack 04/22/2009 at 11:02 AM #

As with any drug, weed is going to affect some in different ways than others. Way back in the day, I couldn’t remember my name with that crap. But I can design a multistep organic synthesis or set up some way cool quantum simulations after a six pack. The opposite is true for others. This gives the perfect opportunity to mention David Wells; who depending on the version of the story was blasted or hungover when he threw his perfect game. Gotta love it.

Even with decriminalization, you’d still run into plenty of logistical problems. Age limits (for example)? I would assume it would be 21. So, your college/high school population who love dabbling in the stuff would still be “illegal”.

Chop- I don’t know about a dramatic spike. A small increase perhaps, but those who want to use probably already do anyway. And even if legal, people will still end up stealing for it or operating under the table, as it would probably be taxed out the wazzu.

  22. Noah 04/22/2009 at 11:05 AM #

Which gives me the chance to bring up Dock Ellis…who threw a perfect game while peaking on acid.

  23. whitefang 04/22/2009 at 11:14 AM #

Wonder if the college drug tests are like the high school ones? One of my sons and his best friend were 2 of the well-known non-smokers on the fb team. Damn if they didn’t have their number pulled over and over to pee in the bottle. To the point that my wife was getting really PO’ed and complained. Isn’t it funny how that works?

I’m starting back myself – when I retire and am sittin on the porch in the mountains. Put me on the “quit wasting your time and our money chasing pot around” team.

  24. Thinkpack17 04/22/2009 at 11:26 AM #

I always got pulled to pee in college. I heard they pull 5 names or so and the coach picks 3 or 4. They never tell you exactly how it works though. You just get a call in your dorm room…or they pull you out of practice and tell you to bring ID.

  25. CStanley 04/22/2009 at 11:30 AM #

I’m not gonna make the argument about whether it should be legalized or not.

The main point is…the idiot smoked pot right before the NFL combines. Cost himself mega bucks. Not smart.

I also think it is indicative of a trend you will start to see with character issues, off the field problems and just general type of players that UNC will become more and more involved with. Sure, every college has a player like Tate. But at a school with a “reputation” like Carolina’s, this will become more the norm and that perception should and will start to break down. There’s a price with becoming (or in UNC’s case, wanting to become) an overnight national power in football.
