Harper is New Womens’ Coach – or – Fowler finally lands his Cougar(Catamount)

Sorry…but I didn’t make the moron create this opening with our funny title. (If you are confused, you can click here)

In the one of the world’s worst kept secrets of all time, WRAL is reporting that Western Carolina’s Kellie Harper is likely to be named head coach of the women’s basketball team. Based on SFN’s sources, Ms. Harper will indeed be the hire.

We welcome Ms. Harper to Raleigh and are looking forward to her restoring one of the pioneer programs of women’s college basketball! We are genuinely excited about this hire and apply our meaningless stamp of approval here.

The actual decision/hire by NC State is a great one; but unfortunately the execution of the hire was horrendous.

Why the decision took so long is anybody’s guess. Kay Yow was only been sick for the better part of a decade and passed away months ago. The basketball season finished almost 45 days ago. You will hear the excuse that a nepotism issue needed to be cleared by the slow moving bureaucracy. Whatever. Just remember this when Harper struggles in a couple of years because she basically had no recruiting class this year and potentially next year. (See Sidney Lowe’s late start in 2006 after Lee Fowler botched (a) his responsibilities in the search and (b) the transition to the new coach with our recruiting class who had signed LOIs that year).

I guess we know who wears the pants in the Harper familia.

WolfmanDave, you took the words right out of my mouth!! I’d call that a FOX, not a cougar!! Please tell me I’m not getting THAT old, wtf!!

I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that NL Finch had something to do with the leak and ensuing shitstorm from last week. She has got to be bitter that Glance didn’t get the job and there was really nothing she could do to influence the decision from her ACC post short of embarrassing the school. I also think that this would have been harder to pull off if Finch still had an office in the Case Center. Even with “Coach” still around I’m damn glad that we finally rid ourselves of NLF.

Par Shooter – I don’t know enough about her to fairly judge, but I’ve drawn some partial conclusions based on that office fiasco.

When I posted on here last week that Harper had accepted the job, my info came from someone employed at WCU. NCState was very tight-lipped on this one.Actually it was nice to see.

Looks like a good hire… but the post’s title is offensive and juvenile. Let’s not tar the new coach with the AD’s stupidity.

I like this hire. Guess the wise crack is a Tenn. thing?

Good up and coming young coach that could blast off at the next level. As a pt guard I think she and TN won three championships. Lets hope she leads NCSU like that!

Both B ball coaches were point guards for national championship teams. Mmmmm

For people to bash the time it took to make this hire without knowing the facts or being involved in the process is ridiculous. Fowler ain’t perfect, but this process was run pretty good.

definitely not a cougar! Anybody younger than me (I’m in mid 30’s) is NOT a cougar.

  11. GAWolf 04/15/2009 at 3:51 PM #

Agreed, anti-smurf. She is way too young to qualify under the definition of a cougar. That’s just ridiculous. It shocks me that it took some 30 comments for someone to point this out. It was my first thought when reading the title. SFN… check your urban dictionary:

    1. cougar
An older woman who frequents clubs in order to score with a much younger man. The cougar can be anyone from an overly surgically altered wind tunnel victim, to an absolute sad and bloated old horn-meister, to a real hottie or milf. Cougars are gaining in popularity — particularly the true hotties — as young men find not only a sexual high, but many times a chick with her shit together.
That cougar I met last night, showed me shit I didn’t know existed, I’m goin back for more.

    2. Cougar

(see also hunt, prowl, corner, pounce). Noun. A 35+ year old female who is on the “hunt” for a much younger, energetic, willing-to-do-anything male. The cougar can frequently be seen in a padded bra, cleavage exposed, propped up against a swanky bar in San Francisco (or other cities)waiting, watching, calculating; gearing up to sink her claws into an innocent young and strapping buck who happens to cross her path. “Man is cougar’s number one prey”
Millions of them. More famously, Demi and Ashton, Naomi Watts and Heath Ledger, Joan Collins and her hubby, Cameron and Justin, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins

    3. cougar

An attractive woman in her 30’s or 40’s who is on the hunt once again. She may be found in the usual hunting grounds: nightclubs, bars, beaches, etc. She will not play the usual B.S. games that women in their early twenties participate in. End state, she will be going for the kill, just like you. Associated with milfs
I bagged a cougar last night at the club.

    GAWOLF,

Check your dictionary for the term “Catamount”…as in Western Carolina Catamounts.

I like the hire, and will, of course, support her like any of the Wolfpack family. I still think, however, that the whole process is an atrocity towards Kay Yow’s memory and Stephanie Glance! How about making Stephanie AD!! She has a strong resume for sports administration and knows NCSU well.

If this lady is not a cougar to you guys, than you guys have just aged yourself!!!! She is a cougar to me fo sho!!

Hate to say it, but I think we need to give Fowler some credit here. As most of the authors here are pretty loyal in their opposition to him when he screws up (he almost always does). But when he does it right, as it appears he has here, we need to give the man some credit.

    Welcome and good luck Coach!!!

Who really knows if Foulup had ANYTHING to do with the hiring of Kellie Harper! After all, the hiring of TOB was taken completely out of his hands from day one until TOB was ready to sign. And for those of you who take issue with Kellie’s husband being an assistant womens BB coach at WCU, her resume’ indicates that she married him in May of 1999, the same year she graduated from UT, and years before she became a HC, if that tells you anything.

I’m guessing the next domino to fall will involve LF….. Harper is probably a solid hire, but taking this long to announce it suggests to me that something else is up.

  19. sautz 04/15/2009 at 5:50 PM #

I wish this hire would have been made earlier. The end of spring signing period is May 20th. Hopefully she has enough time to connect with Johnson and get her here. Alyssa Bennett would be great, too. I have a feeling if Harper had been given more time some more names would been interested in coming.

Looks like we lost some recruits during this.

Hell, this time we let them out of their LOI before the coach was even hired. WTF? For once, I’d like for us to be hard asses and make these kids stay true to their word.

NC State – we turn coaching searches into a start from scratch experiment.

    Tomorrows headline:
“A cat to mount. Lee Fowler nabs a Cougar to lead womens hoops.”

  24. gcpack 04/15/2009 at 9:58 PM #

I don’t get all the hand ringing over how long it took or who leaked out the information or whether this helps Fowler.
All that doesn’t matter at all.

I believe we got a great hire that is youthful for the long run, has championship experience at the highest level of women’s basketball(UT) and has proven her worth working up the professional ladder. This is the best news in quite awhile.

Those that publicly lobbied for Glance soley on the basis of Kay Yow’s desires have no dog in the fight. I laughed when the N&O and local tv stations kept reporting who
Sylvia (is that really a women) Hatchell wanted for State to hire as it’s new coach.
I mean how far will the media stoop(as well those at UNC)to continue this charade that EVERYTHING we do at State somehow involves UNC or a concern for UNC. Hatchell can shut her trap and the last thing State needed to do was to take her advice.

IMOP Glance had no chance for the job(if there was one at all) once Hatchell opened her trap saying she wanted Glance for the job. Hey Slyvia, no one cares what you want. Now you probably have real competition from State in basketball. Hatchell’s opinion was one of the most insincere things said publicly since our recent political elections.

Now its on to firing the men’s soccer coach. That bum must go no matter what dirt he has on the powers that be. Maybe someone here with the IT ability could start a new website:

    ‘FIRE TARANTINI’S SORRY ASS.com’.

    BJD,
Glad you think the title is funny. I think it is tasteless.
