Giglio Previews 2009-10 ACC (Updated 3/25)

On the heels of this fantastic and comprehensive entry, we get more great work looking to next season from J.P. Giglio at the N&O’s ACCNow. I wouldn’t even know how to begin breaking down the rosters, but he does a great job projecting early departures and new player rotations. Kudos to him for going on record like this!

Where is the Pack? 9th:

9. N.C. State
1. Javi Gonzalez, 5-11, jr.
2. Lorenzo Brown, 6-4, fr.
3. C.J. Williams, 6-5, so.
4. Richard Howell, 6-7, fr.
5. Tracy Smith, 6-8, jr.

We’ve got a lot of versatile parts – note how I didn’t use ‘interchangable’ – for example, Julius Mays (6-2, so.) could start in the backcourt and Dennis Horner (6-8, sr.) could start for Williams.

Pre-summer thought: It is year 4 for Sidney Lowe and, for better or worse, it’s his roster with no more holdovers. Lorenzo Brown and Ricahrd Howell better be his Johnny Dawkins and Mark Alarie (the recruiting class that saved Coach K) or the forecast doesn’t look promising for a year five.

As we noted in the comments section of another entry – every team in the Atlantic Coast Conference has made at least one NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three seasons since Lowe was announced as coach.

Wednesday morning brought us more attention on the Wolfpack Basketball program as Ken Tysiac offered offseason improvement plans for the Wolfpack.

C Tracy Smith: A jump shot. If Smith can learn to score on 12- to 14-foot jumpers rather than just with his back to the basket, he will be much more effective in the post. He ought to particularly work on the same baseline shot McCauley developed last season.

F Dennis Horner: Nerves of steel. Horner was one of N.C. State’s best free throw shooters until the closing minutes of tight games. As a potential starter, he will be in position to shoot more key free throws next season.

G C.J. Williams: A pull-up jumper. Williams improved immensely as a catch-and-shoot scorer last season as a freshman. The next step will be to develop as a slasher, and a pull-up jump shot will help him do that.

F Johnny Thomas: A baseline game. Thomas, who’s N.C. State’s best athlete, has an opportunity to gain huge minutes next season and stands to benefit most from the departures of Costner and Ferguson. He isn’t much of a scorer, though, and could make a huge impact if he can score on baseline drives and jump shots.

G Javi Gonzalez, G Farnold Degand, G Julius Mays: Consistency. At their best, any one of these players is capable of being an ACC-caliber point guard. Problem is, not a single one of these guys stays at his best for any appreciable length of time. Coach Sidney Lowe would love for one of them to seize the reigns this summer.

G Lorenzo Brown, F Richard Howell, G Scott Wood, F Josh Davis: Maturity beyond their years. At least two of N.C. State’s freshmen are going to have to contribute immediately. Brown and Howell in particular need to be ready for vital roles if this team is to have any chance of reaching postseason play.

Coach Sidney Lowe: A new plan. Whatever success N.C. State had last season came as a result of Lowe’s introducing a big lineup with Smith, Costner and McCauley on the floor early in ACC play. The Wolfpack doesn’t have the bodies up front to play big anymore.

Update
Dave Telep of Scout.com was on 850 this morning and gave a good overview of recruiting for the Wolfpack, with his thoughts on John Wall, C.J. Leslie and Seth Curry. Well worth the time to listen.

^^I still feel like we are in a death spiral. Even when the plane crashes there will still be those that praise Lowe for having the plane hit the ground. Imagine that.

Or those that would blame Capt. Sullenberger for putting a plane in the Hudson. Damn, a “better” pilot could’ve made it back to the airport. IMAGINE THAT!

So we have teeth gnashing and wailing, wikiphiling fact getters, overly optimistic sunshine ass blowers and that whistling from The Good, Bad and the Ugly… for those who want to duel it out. I love this site!

“we may still be in the same boat with him that we were with Sendektus after year 10. that’s the reality.”

Since when did total conjecture = reality?

I don’t think the administration needs to “thank” anyone for “bailing them out”. In fact, I think it ought to work the other way around. The way I see it, Sidney Lowe was very fortunate to land the job and the great pay and notoriety that came with it, and as far as I am concerned, he is fortunate to still have his job. If he were at any place that has any sorts of stadards, with an AD with any balls, his ass would have already been shown the door. Don’t tell me otherwise. He’d be the third man down the bench for the Oklahoma City Thunder right about now. No shame in that. But this “experiment” would have already run its course.

Red, I hate to tell ya buddy, but you’re flinging dung up against the wall and hoping it sticks. Some of your diatribes are so incoherent that I honestly don’t know what your point is, even after going back and reading 3 and 4 times. But maybe it’s just me.

I see that Sid is your homeboy. Fine by me. To each their own. I just find it incredibly amusing that you, Redfred, the guy that scoffed at the “five in a row” like it means nothing, like just anyone can do it here, and THEN you go about sticking up for a guy to no end when his results are, well, marginal at best THREE years running. He’s got players leaving his program, recruits backing off their commitments, and then he goes out and signs a player that NONE, not ONE, of his peers thought to do. Yea, pretty unconventional alright.

From what I’ve read, NCAA tournament appearances don’t really matter. What you want is a champion capable of contending squarely with the best once there. Fair enough. I don’t think most of us are in disagreement there. However, most of us recognize there’s a wide disconnect between what we currently have, where we’ve been the last few years, and what the immediate future is likely to hold.

“Pup, If I’m the reason for your last paragraph, so be it.”

Not at all, redfred. I enjoy many of your posts.

I did not mean to single out you or any other poster. It’s just that a lot of comments have become slanted towards getting personal and calling one another out rather than civil disagreements backed up by facts, logic, reasoning, stats etc. etc., so on so forth.

The rhetoric meter is turned up pretty high, and that’s usually not any kind of good indication – as it means some of the fanbase is starting to be divisive about a given subject at the very least.

Please continue to comment away, and if I disagree with anything you say I will be sure to address you personally and with a respectful tone 🙂

^How in the hell did that team even win a conference game? I remember going to those games … painful, so painful.

    I … I … don’t want to remember 🙁

“It hasn’t changed. Lowe is there, he’s an inexperienced coach who, because of certain circumstances, landed an opportunity to coach at a very high level. I don’t really think I can find fault in Lowe for taking that opportunity. But, I sure can find fault in those who allowed the HC’s job at NC State University to be such an undesireable position among the coaching heavyweights of collegiate BB.”

Totally agreed! I think a lot of us got too “pumped up and raised our expectations too high” when we beat Carolina. The goal is realistic, but that must have been one of those days that the “stars lined up”, we had an experienced point guard, and everyone played with intensity.

I really support Lowe, and don’t want to see a repeat of Amato, nor do I want to see this thing strung out as long as it was with the “no name”.

In case you guys have missed something lighter though, take a read in the Technician. Playboy is on campus doing their “Girls of the ACC Spread”. Maybe using the term “spread” isn’t PC?

I guess it aint about me. But I’d be willing to bet that them sumbitches up the ladder from Lowe wouldnt wait eleven months if they caught a case of appendicitis. Been there done that too. And that Mutha had to GO!!! Quick!!!! So now Lowe is our Appendicitis! Betcha they wouldnt wait eleven months there to make a move. I’d guarantee an opening in the next 24 – 48 hours for that.

Anyways I’ll pull for these Losers once again next year. I am dedicated. That dont mean I cant be Frustrated with about 20 years of BS. I grew up with the WINNERS back in the 80’s. So u know I’m impatient with LOSERS. And to think I actually was OPTIMISTIC after Lowe’s 1st year!!!But I was quickly introduced to the reality of SUCKNESS that has established itself recently within the confines of this BBALL program.

I’ll swear to Eating my CROW next year if it presents itself. In the meantime I will remember times gone by when we were relevant and still WTNY and hope for the BEST but instill a REALITY CHECK within my frame of MIND of Predictable SUCKISM.

    “Lakista McCuller, G ”

Afterglow, thanks for inciting memories of defending Lakista to my UNC fan friends at H.S. lunch tables, as a “pure” shooter. Ah the memories.

    “JeremyH…

“Changing coaches only made sense if we were going after a proven winner, or a up-and-comer.”

Uh, I don’t know if you’ve been following very closely, but the phrase “changing coaches” really does NOT apply here in the least.”

redfred2, I’m not sure about “in the least”, but I could clarify: the institution changed coaches after Sendektus was run out of town, while the administration got caught unprepared and incompetent, mess upon mess upon…mess, and so it goes. we all go to nc state.

redfred,greywolf,ed89: Glad sid can do no wrong in your eyes, but the man cannot coach and there in not one bloody thing that is personal about it……..And you are right what we have had these past few years are much better than getting into 5 straight nccaa’s.
He must be a great guy the way you guy’s constantly defend and praise him ,but he sure as hell sucks as a coach.
