Virginia fires Leitao as coach

Fox Sports is reporting that Virginia has fired Men’s Head Basketball coach, Dave Leito after four years on the job. Link to Fox article. Of course, Leitao officially ‘resigns’ so that he can receive his more money for going away nicely ($2.1 million). Leitao made the NCAA tournament once in four seasons at Virginia.

This link will take you to a more detailed article from The Sporting News.

Leitao was hired four years ago by the Cavaliers and compiled a 63-60 record. Virginia, two years removed from a first-place regular-season finish in the ACC, was 10-18 overall and 4-12 in the ACC this season.

Leitao won ACC Coach of the Year after Virginia was 21-11 and tied North Carolina for first place in the league with a 11-5 record.

However, the Cavaliers were 17-16 two years ago and finished 10th in the conference and were next to last in the ACC this season.

Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Xavier’s Sean Miller are expected to be two names in the mix to replace Leitao.

I’ve got a million thoughts and not enough time to post them. I just can’t help but laugh at how diametrically opposite this type of behavior is from the manner in which Lee Fowler ‘manages’ the NC State Athletics Department. I will never forget Fowler telling everyone at NC State that ‘you can’t fire a coach who won Coach of the Year honors’.

This opening could potentially play a role in NC State’s future as Sean Miller is considered to be a coach who would be a mutual fit as potential future replacement for Sidney Lowe is Coach Lowe can’t get the Wolfpack program turned around in the next couple of seasons.

TSN has a little more in their article.

We will have more on this later.

Lee “knows basketball! Could he be lured to VA as the coach?

  2. choppack1 03/16/2009 at 3:32 PM #

Wulfpack – Yep, I’m sure Al Groh is whistling through the graveyard.

It’s a good life lesson though, whoever said that half of life is just showing up was wrong. Half of life is showing up AND not pissing off everyone around you.

    ^^^Excellent, excellent points Clarksa/Wulf.

I hope you are right. UVA get Sean Miller! If we have to get rid of Sid in the future, the less MIller is available the better I like it.

  5. Clarksa 03/16/2009 at 3:36 PM #

^Just my personal preference…but I wouldn’t want anyone from the “Sendek Coaching Tree” either…

  6. boonami 03/16/2009 at 3:39 PM #

um I’d take Miller over Sid any day. You can’t knock what he’s done at Xavier and if memory serves, he wasn’t under Herb for long before he left.

  7. Clarksa 03/16/2009 at 3:41 PM #

^Miller left and we went to 5 straight NCAA tournaments…

  8. boonami 03/16/2009 at 3:48 PM #

^yeah and Miller has taken Xavier to 4 straight so I don’t think he was the problem when he was here.

    Groh has one more year.
And there was more than performance behind this.

Also keep in mind that UVa while not being successful in the 2 revenue sports just built a first class (and first class expensive) basketball arena AND changed the football seating rules that PO’ed the “old blueblood” fans. That means that Littlepage has to be moving.

If/when we are in the market for a coach again, “better than Lowe” isn’t the benchmark, any more than “better than Les” was acceptable for Sendek.

Pretty much every coach has won at Xavier over the past 15-20 years. I’m not convinced Sean Miller is all that impressive.

Isn’t Thad Matta somehow on that tree?

Also, regarding Fowler — I remember hearing a couple of years ago how Fowler was totally enamoured with Tim Welsh. If Sendek ever left, Welsh was supposed to be the #1 pick to replace him.

That tells you everything you need to know.

IMHO, hiring a coach from Xavier is very risky.

The following ACC coaches were previous HC’s at Xavier:
    1) Bob Staak – fired after no NCAA tourneys. (He had that bad “I inherited nothing” luck too.
    2) Pete Gillen – fired after 1 NCAA tourney in 8 years.
    3) Skip Prosser – definitely had some success at Wake Forest, but had some down years too.

Of course, Thad Matta also coached at Xavier too – and he’s done quite well at tOSU – but tOSU isn’t in the ACC and Matta had the best record of all Xavier coaches (including S. Miller.)

Don’t get me wrong, it would be a logical move to hire Sean Miller. However, it’s pretty obvious to me at least that the Xavier program has some built in advantages that should make you wary of future success in the ACC.

Great someone judged on results? Well now Va,Alabama and Georgia are going to scoop up 3 decent coaches well unless Va goes our route and hires Ralph Sampson(Hey he bleeds orange!!)

UVa should rehire Jeff Jones. He did a good job with ‘merican this year.

  16. GAWolf 03/16/2009 at 4:10 PM #

Someone in Atlanta this past weekend (I believe at a bar?) told me that Jeff Jones got run out of Charlottesville for messing around with Coeds. Maybe now that he’s put on about 60 pounds and is much “less sexy” he’ll be a good fit this time around.

I do not confirm or deny this message.

State sucked when Sean Miller was on the bench. Sendek didn’t do anything at State until Larry Hunter came in to save that god-awful offense and turn it into something that kind of sorta works when the gods are smiling.

I think it may be time for Sid to look down the bench and see if he may need some more dynamic personalities on his staff. I’m not suggesting he let anyone go but certainly figure out if he has the most talented people available to him on his staff.

Groh has a huge buyout which combined with his COY performance two years ago bought him some breathing room…but very little. The natives are certainly getting restless.

  19. Wolfpack_1995 03/16/2009 at 4:38 PM #

Accountability after 4 years. Imagine that.

Meanwhile we are stuck in Bizzaro world with Coach Fowler and Co.

Once Sid leaves maybe we can get Gene Littles as our next coach!

^^That would be like the captain of the Titanic throwing busboys overboard for running into an iceberg

    From the AP story:

On the court, Leitao’s distribution of playing time was often befuddling as players got significant minutes one game, and then went several games playing sparingly if at all.

“Also, regarding Fowler — I remember hearing a couple of years ago how Fowler was totally enamoured with Tim Welsh. If Sendek ever left, Welsh was supposed to be the #1 pick to replace him.”

Noah – Welsh’s sister works/worked for wokfpack sports marketing and his dad lives in the area and was an NBA scout after having been the coach at Iona. I am sure Lee has met him and considers him a buddy. That kind of relationship seems to be the criteria used for firings and hirings around here between Lee, Oblinger, and Murphy. It is absolutely the worst kind of good ole boy network/peter principle rolled in to one huge stinking mess.

    Peter Principle
    n.

The theory that employees within an organization will advance to their highest level of competence and then be promoted to and remain at a level at which they are incompetent.

    [After Laurence Johnston Peter (1919–1990).]

I learn something new every day..thanks SFN!

UVa fires Leitao; recruit open to NCSU. Does anyone have any info on this headline about the “recruit open to NCSU”?

I hope a football post is coming soon……

Alot is happening right now getting ready for spring practices….

Maybe its just me but i am sick to death of basketball for one season.

Toney Baker is listed as the starting tailback… Could he be back stronger and faster than ever???

Our offensive line looks deeper and stronger than ever. Atleast 2 deep at every postion

    Sorry for getting off topic………..
