Football Tidbits: ACC Spring Football Prospectus, Rutgers Bled Cash To Play In Pizza Bowl

Tidbit 2: Rutgers Loses 184K Going To The Pizza Bowl

Rutgers University collected $1.2 million for its trip to the PapaJohns.com Bowl last December. But by the time expenses were paid and the coaching staff given its performance bonuses, the school lost more than $184,000, according to reports filed with the NCAA.

While the football team’s expenses were more than covered through the Big East Conference — which pools playoff money — the university spent more than $200,000 to send faculty, staff and 187 members of the band and cheerleader squads to the game.

That’s a lot of cash to bleed in a recession.  I haven’t seen NC State’s numbers, but I would bet that the expenses were a lot more prudently managed.  If I recall correctly, State did not send its dance team and had a modest contingent present in Birmingham.

One group that did show up were Wolfpack fans who clearly were in the majority at Legion Field.

Football Prospectus

For those of us going through football withdrawal (I have April 18th circled as a holiday, it’s the day of the Spring Game) here’s a little reading courtesy the ACC offices: the ACC Spring Football Prospectus. (pdf).  Naturally, most of the NC State mentions are of Russell Wilson.

State is the lowest in the conference for returning lettermen at 32.  For those of us who like numbers in black and white, they have an interesting look at the returning percentages of each phase of the game.

Lettermen Returning ………… 32
Lettermen Lost ………………… 17
% Passing Returning ……… .951
% Rushing Returning …….. .586
% Receiving Returning…… .756
% Receiving Yds Ret. ……… .797
% Scoring Returning ……… .725
% Kickoff Returns …………. .859
% Punt Returns ……………. 1.000
% Tackles Returning………. .653
% Turnovers Forced ………. .679
Spring Practice Dates: Mar. 20, 21, 24, 26, 28, 31; Apr. 2, 4, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 17; Spring Game–Apr. 18.

Interested in comments about barnes getting alot of carries… won’t he be behind Eugene and baker?

^ No more smoke and mirrors. What you see is what you get. What I see is hard work, good recruiting, good coaching, and good kids. Our team has tremendous character. I’m very excited. Never dreamed I would but I’m driving down from DC for the spring game.

I can’t count the number of non-NC State people who go out of their way to tell me what a great football coach we have (usually with a story to substantiate their view).

Did anyone notice that at UnC fans enter Kenan Stadium in groups of 10? Oh, they estimate their attendance — that’s news to me…

Maybe. I actually think that there’s a good chance that he will split time fairly evenly with Eugene.

When Toney Baker shows up at the Spring Game and looks anything like the player he was a couple of years ago, I will believe that he will be the player he was a couple of years ago. Until then…I remain skeptical.

Do you guys remember a Mike O’Cain recruit named K.J. Stone? He had a terrible knee injury against Clemson in 1999. When Amato came in, Stone worked extremely hard to come back. Amato even pointed him out as a guy who had really busted his tail. Stone ran something like a 4.45 during workouts.

But the problem was that he couldn’t shift and slash the way he used to. His straight-ahead speed was back, but the stopping and starting was the problem.

I would have no problem believing that Toney Baker will have similar problems. Yes, he probably has all of his strength back. Yes, he probably is in good physical shape. yes, he can probably sprint as fast as he used to. But that knee is going to be different.

^ Don’t forget that Toney Baker also had a problem holding on to the ball. That’s why he was yanked against USM and Andre’ Brown got in the game and carried the day. The fumble that caused Baker to be sat was a bad call, he was pretty clearly down — the play was literally right in front of us.

  7. BJD95 03/03/2009 at 4:13 PM #

We do need a short yardage back. Hopefully Baker can at least fill that role.

Noah – Definitely remember K. J. Stone & his injury. Didn’t he come in with Koren Robinson and Carlos Doggett as three really good in state RB prospects? Doggett did not ever make a big contribution and Koren switched to WR. Ray Robinson was also at about the same time.

  9. Noah 03/03/2009 at 4:49 PM #

Stone was in that class, yes. Class of 1997, I think. Levar Fisher and Adrian Wilson and Brian Williams were also part of that group. As was Corey Smith, maybe?

Doggett was supposed to be a beast. There was a guy on Wolfchat from Greensboro who used to show up and just rave about him.

Stone was singled out by O’Cain on his radio show as a guy to watch for in the future. Stone had a game in high school where he ran for something like 350 yards (or something crazy like that).

Robinson was the biggest surprise. He was not ranked very high as a high school senior (in the 40s somewhere in-state). But during his redshirt year, O’Cain said that he was the best WR he had ever seen not named “Torry Holt.”

Here is an interesting article on Creecy. Sounds like a TOB type of player!

Noah is dead on about Toney Baker’s knee likely giving him problems despite working hard to rehab and despite getting all or most of his strength and straightline speed back. A rebuilt knee is almost never the same with regard to planting and cutting on it.

He’ll probably have some big gains on plays where big holes are opened up for him and he can just turn on the speed and go, but he will have a hard time separating himself from defenders in traffic on his own. How well he does overall will largely be dependent upon how well the OL is able to open things up for him.

^ I want to balance the skeptical comments about T Baker with an optimistic comment. I have heard from a buddy that there is a solid chance Toney will regain his old form. Maybe 50-50. Regardless, it will be a pleasure for me to see him on the field in some role.

  13. Noah 03/03/2009 at 8:46 PM #

I hope you’re right. But I’ll believe it when I see it.

That said, there’s still a role for him on this team even if he doesn’t fully recover.

wow, i`m still kind of in shock on Bowens. what did he actually do to his knee?

i now remember hearing something about hurting it in a B-ball game. i was under the impression he was out for the spring but would return. i`m sure TOB is pissed that he got injured in an activity outside of football, thats a violation of team rules…

i`m going to remain optimistic about Baker. i`m not a d-1 football player, but i have had a knee reconstruction after a skiing accident. i`m 25 and don’t wish that recovery process on ANYONE!
it is amazing what not necessarily doctors can do but the PT/rehab people….

so…does anyone know the details of Bowens and Bakers injury? is it almost certain that Bowens is done Noah/Zahadum?

Good discussion. We need a FB thread at least once every 2 weeks, and especially when BB ends.

I heard that JR Sweezy is planning to move from DE to DT. I was surprised to hear that gien that Kuhn seems to be the more logical move (size), but we do need another body inside, considering we only have three scholarship guys with above zero games played. Mageo will help here, but I like not depending on true freshman at the point of attack.

Also, let’s not talk ACC Title yet. I suppose it’s possible with a mediocre league, but I don’t think we are there yet with personnel & depth. My target is 2010, when TOB’s recruits are beginning to fill the 2-deep with some good experience.

and yes, i`m completely fine with playing make believe in my head and on SFN that it is [almost]football season.

Please find some meaty content for us to mill over every couple of weeks….
i haven’t even looked at the game thread from MD, all i know is we lost to Vasquez…and i`m pissed and haven’t even checked to see when the next game is nor do i plan on watching/checking on it. i`m out.

SFN, will you please help ween me off this dismal B-ball program?

  17. Noah 03/03/2009 at 10:52 PM #

what did he actually do to his knee?

Shredded it. All three ligaments were torn. Anterior, posterior and medial collateral.

And Mageo is going to be a junior, not a freshman.

  18. inhoc... 03/03/2009 at 11:11 PM #

Hmm. Well that in and of itself doesn’t rule him out in my opinion, hopefully the rehab goes well…

About the only thing LF has shown is that he knows how to manager a budget.

Has a player ever come back from that to be useful?

Has a player ever come back from that to be useful?

It’s not JUST the injured knee. He will have missed two consecutive years with injuries.

There’s rust…and then there’s “I am a piece of iron sitting on the bottom of the ocean since the fall of the Roman Empire”-rust.

Yes, people have come back from those types of injuries before. But if we make two lists…one with people who have come back and one with people who’ve just faded away…one of those lists is longer than the other.

^^About the only thing LF has shown is that he knows how to manager a budget.

Not to defend LF, but that’s the number one job of most Athletic Directors. Usually winning makes that easier, because your revenue goes up.

What is the date of the Spring game? Will Wilson play since baseball season is underway?

4/18, I believe. And I wouldn’t expect Wilson to play baseball until AFTER that date.

“5 Victor Hampton CB Charlotte (N.C.) Independence 5-11/175”

‘Victor Hampton has already committed to Florida.’

Big surprise there…have we EVER signed a top 5 in NC player out of Independence?

Does their coach have some deep abiding hatred of NC State?

Independence and Richmond County–two football factories that (evidently) haven’t shown much love for the Wolfpack…
