Your ‘how could they miss that’ of the day – Scheyer takes at least 14 steps

We really couldn’t have asked for better timing.

In the first game played after we ran this must-read/watch entry, Duke and Saturday’s ACC officiating crew gave us another one one for the ages.

Unlike the video from last Sunday that counted 12 steps that did not result in a travel, it is impossible for me to keep count of the number of steps taken in this one.

Techinically speaking, you can easily count into the teens once Scheyer fails to establish a pivot foot when he first receives the inbounds pass as each time he places his foot on the floor represents another step. The sad thing is that in the second half of the play he is still sliding and jumping on his left foot that he thinks is his pivot foot. Even if he hadn’t traveled before, sliding/hopping on his pivot as he does would represent another travel on the play. GREAT WORK by the ACC zebras!

Unbelievable. What’s gonna happen when unc vs duke next Sunday for the main event? Who’s gonna walk all over who?

  2. redfred2 03/01/2009 at 1:43 AM #

Are you telling me that there was no call on that?

I’ve seen just about enough, I’m about to go BALL-ISTIC!!!

Oh wait, I’m sorry I forgot, it’s just the way it is in today’s game, we wouldn’t want to stop progress.

  3. Daily Update 03/01/2009 at 5:37 AM #

That is absurd. I also hate television coverage right now. It is like they don’t show replays of a lot of fouls/violations on purpose. Like we are supposed to assume that every call is correct when in fact we know that officials miss these calls all the time.

That could be counted as anywhere from 12-15 steps. How is it possible for refs to miss that? I didn’t see any fouls either.

That is a disgrace and I can’t believe Greenburg didn’t spew enough obsceneties to get it reviewed….or at least a damn Technical. How unlike him…..I don’t even know who he is anymore………..

It’s really hard to believe there’s not a conspiracy in favor of Duke and UNC when you see something like that. Can you imagine Va Tech getting away with a similar play? I can’t imagine anyone at any level getting away with it. That would be called on a 7-year-old down at the Y.

Prediction: Duke doesn’t make it past the first weekend of the NCAA Tourney unless they get to supply their own refs.

I hate Rece Davis’ comments, It “looks” like a walk that they got away with. C’MON Rece, call a spade a spade. It didn’t look like a walk it was a freaking marathon and you need to rip the refs to pieces over this and call out the favortism Dook receives. Oh wait, lost my head, can’t have ESPN tarnish the image of almight DOOK.

Daily Update: I actually watched this live and I thought for certain the announcers weren’t going to replay the walk-a-thon but I was surprised when they did and actually said he got away with a walk.

I watched a little of this game yesterday. The comment that got to me was after a blatant over-the back by Singler, Jimmy Dykes said, “IT DOESN’T MATTER that he was on his back. That was a 50-50 ball and the guy with the biggest valentine won.” (At least that’s pretty close to the quote)

Note to Jimmy Dykes – Part of having the “biggest valentine” is working for inside position on rebounds. This is the kind of stupidity that one would only expect from Woody Durham.

I know this will be an unpopular opinion but Scheyer was getting mugged there. The refs could have easily called a foul on VT and they didn’t, forcing Duke to call a TO. But I certainly agree, SOMETHING needed to be called there, don’t just stand there doing nothing.

SFN: What happened first? A walk or a foul?

“I can’t believe Greenburg didn’t spew enough obsceneties to get it reviewed….or at least a damn Technical. How unlike him…..I don’t even know who he is anymore………..”

    ^Pretty good start to a game-day Sunday morning 🙂

The subtitle to this entry could be “so obvious that even Jimmy Dykes noticed”.

“so obvious that even Jimmy Dykes noticed”.

Dykes: “Just like Tyler Hansbrough, Scheyer had the WILL to walk there and get away with it. That is a GAME DEFINING walk right there, and it takes someone with tremendous WILL and a huge HEART to get away with an obvious violation at this stage of the game. That’s WILL, son.”

Just busting your chops, Jimmy … I actually kinda like you when you’re not saying silly stuff about Hansblah and “Valentines!”

    BJD- Now that’s funny… I don’t care who you are. 🙂

  14. timswar 03/01/2009 at 10:00 AM #

A good half of those seemed like a barely (but still) legit pivot.

He jumped on his first step though, that shoulda been an instant travel call. Also towards the end he lifted his pivot food 3 times, although that’s harder for a ref to see than a low-angle camera.

SFN: True. But, technically, once there is no pivot foot established then every move is a step.

  15. WIFF 03/01/2009 at 10:16 AM #

Wulfpack is right, there are at least 3 fouls by VT on that play. Nevertheless, 2 wrongs don’t make a right. You have an obvious call either way and the refs didn’t make either one. Pathetic.

  16. nav 03/01/2009 at 10:27 AM #

This walk was so obvious they just showed it on ESPN Sportscenter highlights of the game. At least that puts some spotlight on the futility of ACC officiating.

Whatever it was, whether the Maryland players were quilty of hacking Scheyer, they probably did, or whether they beat him over the head with a club, it doesn’t matter. There is NO DOUBT, NONE, that Scheyer was guilty of walking all over the court for whatever the reason. There is also no need to purely speculate about things would have, and how it could have ended, if Maryland had been awarded the ball after the turnover, IT DOES NOT MATTER.

What matters is that there was not just one, or two, but there were MULTIPLE INFRACTIONS, as in BLATENTLY breaking the rules of the game, and the jackasses in stripes who were clearly observing every one of them did not have the balls to call a single one, one way or the other.

Say all you want about who did what, but there is only ONE GUILTY party involved in this one, and it’s the same party that is suiting up, then screwing up the game/ACC BB in general these days.

  18. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 11:07 AM #

The walk happened first, no question. But then he was mugged by two Hokies instantly, and then again and again. The refs simply swallowed their whistle on this play, and that’s just pathetic.

  19. old13 03/01/2009 at 11:25 AM #

Do ACC BB and FB refs receive the same screening (for eye sight and basic competence) and (lack of or bias) training!

  20. hball57 03/01/2009 at 11:38 AM #

BTW only one of those pivots would be legal, if he didn’t already establish his pivot on the first move. The pivot can not be sliding, which it was, at least when he didn’t lift it. You can tell by how far he retreated on the play; he moved back 3 feet.

  21. wolfonthehill 03/01/2009 at 11:40 AM #

    I counted 16. Un-f’ing-believable…

  22. Cosmo96 03/01/2009 at 11:53 AM #

Even though this bad officiating once again favors Duke (as usual), I don’t mind seeing VT get screwed by the refs in this instance. Frankly, I think they deserve it. But overall, yeah, ACC refs are horrible. Blind chimps could do a better job refereeing basketball than these clowns.

  23. redfred2 03/01/2009 at 11:56 AM #

“and how it could have ended, if Maryland had been awarded the ball after the turnover, IT DOES NOT MATTER.”

^”Maryland”, what the hell, were there three teams involved in that game?

No wonder the ref’s couldn’t keep up.

    I’m a dumbass.

Man, I’ll bet I know someone who’d just love to chim in on this BB thread about right now. C’mon back Noah, I know you’re dying to confirm my last statement above, I can take it.

  25. wufpup76 03/01/2009 at 1:43 PM #

^I miss Noah on the bball threads too … They’re always more entertaining and lively.
