Some Quick Football News: Beck, Clemmons and Geron James Not Returning

A quick-hitter from the Signing Day presser:

[NC State Head Coach Tom] O’Brien said receiver Geron James will transfer and that quarterback Harrison Beck and defensive end Jamaine Clemmons have decided to graduate and not return.

He said receiver Donald Bowens had knee surgery Wednesday, and receiver Darrell Davis had shoulder surgery Tuesday.

The big news here is Harrison Beck’s departure, who undoubtedly would have been a distant third string on the Wolfpack depth chart next season.  Russell Wilson will almost certainly return as the starter, and Mike Glennon will be eligible as a redshirt freshman and will take the backup role.

    ^I’m just sayin’ …

Leave it to Pack nation to tear apart and devour something that could be good

Edit: Oops, I meant Pack nation as a collective whole – not SFN … ok, carry on

Noah, Toney Baker will not get another year from the NCAA. We would all love to see another year granted. He was one thing going against him – he wears red. Seems everyone else can get a 6th year except NCSU guys. Ben Mauk did get turned down but he had a transfer in there too on top of the injuries. If you wear powder blue, the NCAA will grant several extra years.

Wow. Imagine what will happen to the Harrison Beck “physique” as a newly married ex-jock. I certainly hope he has some of those air adjustable shocks on his vehicle.

Bryant Feggins and Chris Colmer didn’t play for NC State?

My new good friends at brahsome.com (they don’t know that yet) have a great video of Lane Kiffin calling out Urban Meyer for a recruiting violation. I’ve read other college football blogs over the last few years have called out Meyer as being one of the dirtiest recruiters in the business. Sounds like the story is growing legs…

Beck is gone?!?!?!?!?! Oh man this day got so much sweeter when I read that. That kid is an absolute tool and I’m thrilled to see him go.

I cannot wait until next year, we finally have depth at several positions and a QB who knows what he’s doing. All I can say is “you better watch out South Carolina….”

Why do people use “X” instead of “C” on these blogs?

I see UNX all the time, and two posts back, someone wrote “NXSU” instead of “NCSU”. (It seems someone delete that post… must have been a “UNX” troll…)

What’s the “X” stuff all about?

Rivers was a really good and really smart QB, but I don’t think he matches RW in either his instincts or his football IQ. Rivers is more accurate and has better height, but I think Wilson checks out a hair better on all other metrics.

I know saying that borders on blasphemy.

  10. bradleyb123 02/05/2009 at 2:29 PM #

BJD95, I think you’re right. Rivers had arguably better receivers to work with, too. He could just sling it up and we had guys that could go and get it. He was accurate, but so is Wilson. But Wilson’s legs may actually give him the edge over Rivers.

    I know, this is blasphemy!

The quarterback at a major D1 school usually dates a hot woman. If he isn’t, he’s got herpes or something.

I remember being at Reynolds once and seeing just a GORGEOUS coed hanging around the bathrooms at halftime of a basketball game. Right about that time, Shane Montgomery comes up and puts his arm around her and walks off.

For those that don’t remember, Montgomery was about the most average looking person on the planet.

I can’t imagine what life must be life for someone like Matt Leinhart or Carson Palmer. Or any of the FSU QBs. Troy Aikman probably had to take penicillin by the handful every morning back when he was at UCLA.

    ^ I think I agree, BJD95

Here’s an interesting concept – what are the 3 best NC State QB seasons in your period of fandom? I would go with Kramer’s senior season, Rivers’ junior season, and Wilson’s freshman season (probably in that order).

  14. wufpup76 02/05/2009 at 2:39 PM #

^I’m having a hard time thinking of 3 better seasons while I’ve been watching

  15. bradleyb123 02/05/2009 at 2:42 PM #

BJD95, I tend to agree with your QB seasons. Although Kramer’s senior year is a little more faded in my memory, so I might rank it below Rivers’ junior season.

It’s scary to think how good Wilson might have been if he had had a better supporting cast, and not so darn many injuries throughout the team.

  16. Pack Leader 02/05/2009 at 2:56 PM #

I disagree with the idea that Wilson has a better football IQ than Rivers. Rivers had far less athletic ablity so if the pocket closes on him he goes down where as wilson just sprints to the right and slings it either out of bounds or to a TE over the middle. dont get me wrong i love both but rivers was the son of a good coach, inrolled to state a semister early to beging working with norm chow, started as a TRUE FRESHMAN (not redshirt) and he started 52 straight games against much tougher opponents such as Ohio State and Notre Dame. rivers didnt have much in the way of defence (super mario and Lawsons crew didnt really take off until he left) and yes he had some weapons but TA was seemingly always hurt and Korn left after his fresh year. that leaves just cotchery ( who had average speed) Rivers was THE smartest qb to attend the universtiy.

I refuse to knock down one of the top 2 qbs we have ever seen in the league after one year because we had a good season by a freshman.
To me thats like have john wall come next year, average 25 points a game and then state fans say “oh man hes wayyy better than david thompson” …..different players…..
Now as i say that if wilson does as 2 more years like he did last year then hands down he is the best and smartest qb. It just bothers me people forget what rivers did for 4 years after one good year by a wilson

  17. BJD95 02/05/2009 at 3:05 PM #

Who is forgetting anything? I’m just saying Wilson made fewer mistakes as a freshman than Rivers made as a senior. Which is incredible, given how good Rivers was and still is at the next level.

And it wasn’t a “good” year for Wilson. It was exceptional. First team all-ACC. Offensive ROY. Runner-up offensive POY (still think he was ripped off). He did this with no above-average WRs. He was single-handedly the difference between bowl eligibility and our first 10-loss season in school history.

And it doesn’t mean Wilson will have the better career overall. He’s got alot of football to play before we can even entertain that notion.

  18. bradleyb123 02/05/2009 at 3:31 PM #

Also consider that Russell was the first team all ACC QB after only playing in nine games (not counting South Carolina, where he was knocked out of the game early).

We were all dazzled by Rivers’ arm, which was certainly better than Russell’s. But Russell’s arm COMBINED with his legs, and a lower talent-level in our receivers, and I think he’s a little better than Rivers (as a freshman). Rivers probably had better protection, too. If he had the same O-line that Wilson had, we probably wouldn’t even be having this conversation! Rivers would have completed way fewer passes since he would have been on his back more often than not!

  19. Pack Leader 02/05/2009 at 3:41 PM #

I agree BJD Wilson did have an exceptional year but i firmly believe the QB compitiion in the ACC was more more competitive when rivers attended than last year. I even remember many people saying Wilson was kind of a default pick (horrible way to say that after the season he had) since there was no real qb to speak of in the ACC at all this year. when rivers attended there was Schaub, Whitehurst, Vick, Ryan. All who either were drafted or played in the pros. I honestly cant think of a qb this year who is good enough to play pros except wilson who will play mlb.
all i was trying to say is im not sure is IQ was as high as rivers nomatter what the numbers say……

It’s hard to go against Erik Kramer, but I would have to put Dave Buckey up there over him, at least in my time of watching State’s sports.

uh oh Alpha going olddd schooool

  22. BJD95 02/05/2009 at 4:23 PM #

I’m 35, and the first QB I remember watching is Tol Avery. The first game I can remember is the Penn State heartbreaker.

We always went to all the home games, so I saw much shitty football until EK and DS rolled into town. So Kramer has an especially esteemed place in my memory.

Point well-taken re QB competition. That part is true. Think Schaub beat out Rivers their senior year, right?

Still, that has nothing to do with how many mistakes a QB makes. That’s what’s so amazing about Wilson – he just never screws up. Not that Rivers screwed up alot or anything.

  23. BJD95 02/05/2009 at 4:26 PM #

One footnote I meant to mention earlier. I don’t consider Rivers to be anywhere near on the same plane as David Thompson. Rivers was great, but Thompson was legendary.

  24. Mike 02/05/2009 at 5:19 PM #

Shucks BJD, you beat me to Tol Avery. I was going to suggest Tol on the list of greatest QB’s………….Tol could throw it 90 yards into the wind, and often threw 10 yard passes that hard. Come to think of it, often times the WR would be 10 yards downfield and he would throw it 90 anyway.

Hard to keep Kramer off that list, and I always like Montgomery. Had no arm, but doggone it, always found a way to get it done. I guess with RW, Shane drops to #4.

  25. redfred2 02/05/2009 at 7:35 PM #

As far as the Rivers/Wilson debate, that’s a toughy.

I say that beyond having the ability to throw a football, or to run with it even, is the ability to see the entire field, process all of that info and THEN do something positive about it physically.

Both of those NCSU QB’s were/are great at that, but I’d have to say that I don’t think that I have EVER seen anyone who can wait so long, sit back and coolly evaluate all of his options, while totally stretching the defense all over the field and to it’s breaking point, then calmly throw a laser guided strike down field. OR, take off and start to run with what looks like he has already processed and predetermined a route that may not be the most direct, and he may not even need to run wide open all of the time, but he has the patience to allow his teammates to do their jobs, and they know that he will make the best use of every block that they can provide him along the way. It was just one abbreviated season, but never seen anything like it.

That is Russell Wilson. If he can keep that up, who knows???!!!! If anyone can take that position away, I do not see how.
