Some Quick Football News: Beck, Clemmons and Geron James Not Returning

A quick-hitter from the Signing Day presser:

[NC State Head Coach Tom] O’Brien said receiver Geron James will transfer and that quarterback Harrison Beck and defensive end Jamaine Clemmons have decided to graduate and not return.

He said receiver Donald Bowens had knee surgery Wednesday, and receiver Darrell Davis had shoulder surgery Tuesday.

The big news here is Harrison Beck’s departure, who undoubtedly would have been a distant third string on the Wolfpack depth chart next season.  Russell Wilson will almost certainly return as the starter, and Mike Glennon will be eligible as a redshirt freshman and will take the backup role.

Bowens’ surgury is a little surprising. After sitting out all year with a spine injury, how is it that his knee is injured? It’s still unknown if the leading receiver from 2007 be ready for spring practice.

solid class by TOB and staff.

so this clears the way for Beck to pursue his true passion… competitive eating. Watch out Kabayashi

Is there any truth to the report that TOB drove into the presser room on a motorcycle while wearing a Secret Squirrel costume?

  4. Alpha Wolf 02/05/2009 at 9:45 AM #

^ As much as there is that he came into the presser in an APC with a platoon of his Camp Lejeune brethren.

I was almost giddy over the number of lineman in this class. I had forgotten that lineman were recruited in the early part of this decade.

The Bowen thing could be an injury sustained while rehabbing — a la Tiger Woods.

^^^ I can respect a post that reminds me of The Smiths, Amato’s clowniest moments, and my favorite episode of “Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law” at the same time. Well done, good sir.

so who will be the 3rd string QB this fall? Everett Proctor (the kid from Jack Britt High in Fayetteville)?

  8. Wolf-n-Atl 02/05/2009 at 10:13 AM #

Did I hear someone mention Proctor as a bigger faster RW type player?

  9. Wolf-n-Atl 02/05/2009 at 10:14 AM #

    Yes, I did… from N&O article

“He’s a bigger, maybe faster and better arm than Russell Wilson,” O’Brien said. “Stronger arm. He’s a raw athlete we see a tremendous amount of potential in.”

any scoop on how glennon is taking the backup role? will TOB open up the position for competition during spring practice?

  11. com state10 02/05/2009 at 10:36 AM #

I think from what I remember hearing from the end of the season, TOB always will open up spots in Spring and “play the guy who gives us the best chance to win”

I am excited to hear TOB say that about Proctor, and am extremely interested to see how all of this works out

I would love to find a way to get either Proctor or Wilson on the field with Glennon getting most of the snaps. Having two of the three on the field at all times would be great.

This may be a stupid question but what happens with basketball recruits? I dont remember there being as much made about a basketball signing day, but I could be wrong. When do we get LOI’s from our three great commits for Sid’s 2009 class?

Also, do you guys expect the football schedule to come out this week or possibly beginning next week? Sorry to look ahead but it’s difficult to not be excited thinkin about football again.

I also saw where Proctor is a punter. A QB that can punt makes 4th downs WAY more interesting.

The Bowen thing could be an injury sustained while rehabbing — a la Tiger Woods.

It’s not. He hurt his knee playing intramural basketball.

Proctor will be the third-string QB next year. I still think that at some point in the future, he gets moved to safety. But I could be totally wrong.

As to basketball, there’s an early signing day and yes, there’s a press conference. But football, because of the drama and the size of the classes, it gets more attention.

Plus, basketball just sucks. Football is all rulzy and everything. 🙂

Disappointing news about Geron James. Seems as though the kid possesses all the physical tools to be an outstanding WR.

Maybe it’s old age, but didn’t he get the boot a couple of years ago only to work his way back into TOB’s good graces? Seems a shame to put in the work only turn around and leave.

  15. Noah 02/05/2009 at 10:57 AM #

Geron James had works habits so bad that he even ticked off Chuck Amato!

He goes into the Ebby Calvin ‘Nuke’ LaLoosh file.

  16. TomPack 02/05/2009 at 11:01 AM #

Is it true that Beck actually had written a letter to TOB saying that he wanted to return but it was intercepted on the way to his office and returned for 20 yards?

  17. caniac45 02/05/2009 at 11:16 AM #

I think the truth behind it all is that Harrison Beck is getting married. What’s the point in being tied up in football when you
ve got a new wife. all the best to he and his fiance.

  18. McPete 02/05/2009 at 11:17 AM #

I guess the silver lining in the Bowens story is that if he was playing basketball, his back must be feeling better.

    that was very funny TomPack.

I’m guessing that Glennon still has the strongest arm of the three quarterbacks, but Wilson’s arm is definitely strong enough. and then some.

and here’s to Toney Baker having a nice comeback senior year. i’ve almost forgotten how much i enjoyed his running style. powerful, and looking to punish tacklers.

  19. GAWolf 02/05/2009 at 11:17 AM #

I heard about Bowens’ basketball injury a few months ago and vaguely mentioned it on here to see if anyone else heard about it. Getting no response I thought I had received bad information…. it was bad information alright. That sucks. I wish him well with his recovery!

Anyone know how significant the injury? All knee injuries are bad, but some are still worse than others.

  20. beowolf 02/05/2009 at 11:23 AM #

Bigger and faster than RW is a plus, but don’t forget that RW has very keen football instincts. He plays smart; it’s one reason he had so few turnovers and kept drives alive. He’s a rare combination of talent and smarts. So let’s hope Proctor is a quick study, too.

  21. northhillspack 02/05/2009 at 11:23 AM #

Bowens knee injury is significant. Torn ACL, MCL, and miniscus. Think Toney Baker. It’s that bad.

  22. BJD95 02/05/2009 at 11:59 AM #

I can count the number of bad plays RW made last year on one hand. As a FRESHMAN STARTER. That kind of football IQ is once in a lifetime stuff.

Glad to see we’re already setting ourselves up for an internet QB controversy and the season is how many months away?

Why can’t we just enjoy what we have?

Glennon will earn time if he earns time – it’s that simple. Of course everybody wants to start, and it’s good to be competitive … Glennon appears to be and hopefully is a TEAM player … There’s no room for malcontents or controversies – cancers that kill teams … How about we not try so hard to get one started for once in Wolfpack world?

I think we should trust and respect TOB’s and Bible’s decision making – same as the players will … These guys know a LOT more about it than we do and they have a PROVEN track record … Russell Wilson has a PROVEN track record in games and already some won’t to run him off to baseball or bench him in favor of potential … Pure lunacy

Whoever starts, starts … There’s no need in us crying about it or thinking we know better … But alas, football season will get here and the first thing generated will be some faux QB controversy by the fans and the media … Can’t wait

We have a chance to have a very successful season next season, why try and ruin it by generating friction that hopefully doesn’t already exist?

I’ve seen it twice in the last 10 years. 🙂

The problem is the five years between one QB and the next.

  25. Noah 02/05/2009 at 1:00 PM #

A QB controversy is when you have two suck-ass quarterbacks and half the folks think the first guys sucks harder than the second one and the other half think starter #2 is the suckiest suck in all of sucktown.

What we have is DEPTH. Please do not confuse the two. 🙂

Don’t forget that there’s a solid chance that Toney Baker could get an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA. Unfortunately, I cannot speak intelligently about the factors that must be considered to earn this extra year. As far as I can tell, they shake a Magic Eight Ball to get the answer.
