Basketball: Offense & Defense

Joe Giglio and ACCNow are at it again!!! Here they go again putting together some great work and elevating the News & Observer’s credibility!! (potentially with some guidance from our own choppack…see our comments section)

This morning Giglio offers some fantastic insight into both the 2008-2009 version of the Wolfpack basketball team and into Coach Lowe’s broader strategy and perspective. We will highlight some of Giglio’s points in this entry, but there is plenty in the piece that you will enjoy that we won’t quote here.

I think Giglio’s lead assessment is accurate and serves to enhance the importances two general deficiencies on this club: (1) our struggles with turnovers at the point guard position, (2) our inconsistent rebounding. (Note the improvement from going from a bad rebounding team to a more inconsistent rebounding team, largely thanks to the playing time given Tracey Smith).

N.C. State’s not a bad team, not since the first seven ACC games anyway, it’s just a team with no margin of error.

Offense
I think it should be noted that the general feel of NC State’s offense has progressed light years from where we stood when Coach Lowe took over the program. The impact of our obvious need for a premier point guard not withstanding, this offensive system is both effective and very efficient.

When veterans Brandon Costner and Courtney Fells combine for 18 points, like they did Thursday against Wake Forest, there aren’t many ACC teams N.C. State’s good enough to beat. That’s even with above average contributions from Tracy Smith (18 points) and the point guard position (20 points from the combination of Javy Gonzalez and Farnold Degand), which State got in Thursday’s 85-78 loss against a good Wake team.

State’s problem is it’s not good enough to win games with its defense. Ergo, it has to outscore the opposition (as opposed to holding it to fewer points). That means when scoring leaders Costner, Fells or Ben McCauley decide to take a powder — as they have been apt to do in the past two seasons — the chances of victory go with them.

Later in the article Giglio highlights something that we have shared with you various times in the past – Coach Lowe is known in the basketball community as an excellent offensive tactician.

If he doesn’t make it in the college game, it won’t be because he was out X-and-O’ed. Lowe is what Will Ferrell would call an above-average “strategerist.”

Thursday’s game offered both ends of the spectrum in offensive philosophy. No team in the ACC runs more halfcourt sets than N.C. State. State runs a wider variety of plays (for example, than Boston College) and more player-specific plays (for example, than UNC) than any other ACC team. The problem, since Engin Atsur’s departure in 2007, hasn’t been the design but execution.

Defense
There is no doubt that the Wolfpack’s defense and rebounding have not been strong suits over the last three seasons. With this said, I enjoyed Giglio’s insight that there is more design/strategy to some of these deficiencies than I previously recognized. That doesn’t mean I necessarily agree with the strategy – especially now that State has a roster that can legitimately go 10+ deep with talented athletes like Johnny Thomas and CJ Williams – but, it is interesting nonetheless.

State’s a passive defensive team by design. Coach Sidney Lowe would rather contest shots in the lane than pressure the perimeter. That strategy has its merits but creating turnovers and points is not one of them.

State ranks 12th in the conference in steals, 10th in blocks and 10th in field-goal percentage defense. Those are not the marks of a good defense. That’s the down side for State fans.

The bright side is better athletes usually make better defenders (save for the anomaly that is Wayne Ellington) and Lowe’s next recruiting class upgrades the program’s talent level.

choppack, I agree with your points. But, we still have 3 more games + ACCT + probably NIT.

There is a lot of opportunity to have a more defined perspective of a positive OR a negative trajectory into the future.

Similarly, we may not ‘break’ to the positive or the negative and therefore not get any clarity.

To give the Cliffs Notes version of my pre-season picks, I said we would win 0-1 games against UNC, Wake, Duke, and Clemson (correct); 1-2 games against Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Maryland (correct unless we win out); and 3-4 games against Boston College, Virginia, and Georgia Tech (correct).

I agree with Jeff that the ultimate verdict on this season and any momentum for next year is still out. It’s likely to be inconclusive, IMHO.

First off, thanks for hat tip!

Secondly – I agree that the overall trajectory for Lowe right now is still up in the air.

Personally, I’ve gone from a negative overall feeling about the program to a much more positive one this year. After a 2-6 start, we could have packed it in – instead, the team has shown a lot of guts getting our program on the verge of moving away from the “bad-joke” status that it had become. We’re not out of those woods yet, but we’re at the edge of ’em.

Regarding next year: what has me somewhat optimistic is the improvement players are showing during the course of the year.

I pegging my hope on the fact Sophomore Javi > Freshman Javi. February CJ Williams > November CJ Williams.

Therefore Junior Javi > Soph. Javi, Soph. Williams > Freshman Williams.

Will wait and see how the ’09 recruiting shakes out before passing final judgement about hopes for next year. We will be adding a player or two, from what I’ve read, though it may not be Wall or Cousins.

I think we’ll struggle early on trying to figure out personnel rotations, but should hopefully get it together in January and February.

^”IMO he needs to bring in a coach to teach defense. We do not have to be Duke but we need to be a little better than we are. It might be some lack of athletic ability but we should be better than we are.”

The lack of defense is very puzzling to me. Sidney’s last job with the Pistons had him basically in charge of scouting the opponents offense and developing the defensive game plan for the Pistons IIRC.

I am a big supporter of the BK/MK helping man-to-man. I would love to see us try to play that way. I agree that we are slow as a team, but I think that ramping up the defensive intensity would have made us a better team this year.

As for whether next year’s addition will be an improvement, I approach it this way.
Do I think our PG play will be better from the beginning of the season than it was this season? – Yes. Light years better. Our offensive development this year was delayed four or five games due to all of the possessions we lost in the back court.

Do I think the combination of an improved Tracy Smith (I still see him improving from game-to-game) and our incoming recruits can cover for the loss of McCauley? Maybe not, but I don’t think it will be a devastating drop off. If Costner leaves as well we will probably be noticeably worse inside.

Will CJ Williams be better than Cortney Fells was this year? – No problem. We won’t miss either one of Courtney’s brain cells.

I look for Johnny Thomas to improve next year as well and be a contributor. The big key will be the freshmen. I never like to depend on freshmen to elevate the performance of any ACC team, but our general talent level is low enough that it just might happen for us.

I’d say Giglio has done a good job of interpreting the results of Sid’s coaching and the Wolfpack’s play but offers no insight.

Is (team) improvement in rebounding “largely thanks to the playing time given Tracey Smith” or is playing time is being given to Smith largely because of his improvement in rebounding.

Good to be back where I can “open my big mouth again”. My computer got some sort of crazy worm and kept shutting down on me. I tried to log in on my laptop and get an alternate name, but never got an email back from SFN to get a new password on the alternate name.

I’ve said several times in the last couple of weeks that State has “exceeded my expectations”(one of my firm’s corporate speech sayings) by winning 5 games. Good to see the list above since I’d picked a 3 or 4 win season in the ACC. Maybe we can get another and totally blow me out of the water and I sure would like to be wrong.

Got a technical question for any of you. I know several of you run Firefox rather than IE as your browser. The tech who fixed my computer advised doing that and I’d thought about it before. Any downsides to doing so???? Any advice will be appreciated!!

I’ve also been showing Hansborough’s clips of travelling and the UNC bunch just try to ignore it.

Sent an email last night that maybe we can’t beat Wake, but we sure kicked Tiger yesterday!!

  8. Sw0rdf1sh 02/27/2009 at 6:41 PM #

High, I have used both, but because of work requirements, I still use IE6 on my laptop.

Firefox was great when I used it, but back then (about 1 to 2 years ago) there were many web sites that still didn’t function properly. I’m sure that has been fixed with most sites.

I’m repeating what I keep saying. Next year, two years, four years, ten years, doesn’t matter. This Wolfpack administration has given the keys to our basketball program to Lowe and company, and they will be allowed to stay here as long as they choose to. Have you forgotten who our AD is? This AD will NOT fire this coach. Doesn’t matter if we win out, lose out, bomb out, whatever. Hell, if we make the NIT and get to Madison Square Garden, that might be worth another contract extension. Lowe will not quit no matter how far this program sinks under his tenure. I don’t care if we finish this season with 4 straight losses and do the same thing next year and the next and the next, Sidney Lowe is going to be our coach for as far down the road as I can see, unless there are significant administrative changes at NC State University.

I’ll get behind this coaching staff when they show me we’re making consistent improvement in fundamental areas like recruiting key players, making players better from season to season, holding on to the ball, rebounding, boxing out, smart player rotations, interior defense, intelligent shot selection, consistent intensity, and eliminating sloppy and lackadaisical play. They’ve had the program for 3 years and in my opinion we’re worse off in all those areas except that we no longer have to endure the pain of watching an offense predicated on 3-point bricks from buzzer to buzzer.

What I think will happen now is that we’ll beat both Maryland and BC, mainly because we’re playing those at home and because we’re playing fairly well now. But the Miami game on the road will be tough, and thanks to Jed giving the team an extra day in South Florida to save air fare, an important rest day will be lost. The team will return home but then have to rush to Atlanta, and it may be a repeat of last season, when we had to finish the season with a long road trip and then rush off to Florida where we bombed out in the opening round of the tourney. Why can’t we go back to finishing the season with Wake Forest like we used to, so that when we play in the tourney the following week, we’ll be better rested? What about it, Jed?

  10. Wulfpack 02/27/2009 at 7:05 PM #

I don’t think there is any question that this team has improved this year. We have seen significant player development in the younger guys, and I think that is to Sid’s credit.

However, my optimism for next year is tempered because we are going to finish either #9 or #10 (where we are currently) in the ACC standings. Is that improvement from last year? Of course, since we were dead last. But is it reason for jubilation? No. Why? Because we’ve been at or near the bottom of the barrel for three years running now.

The fact of the matter is that there are other programs improving as well. Hell, GT and UVA are really the only teams I can point to and say they are going to suck again next year. Everyone else is fair game for NCAA Tourney consideration, though BC could be in trouble without Rice.

The other issue I see next year, and it has been well documented, is that we are losing the majority of our production (assuming Costner leaves). Now some are saying this is a good thing i.e. make room for the younger guys to get experience. However, if McCauley, Costner and Fells suck so bad, why do they hardly ever leave the court? There is no question about it that Fells is our best defender. And there is no question that we are seriously screwed in the post next year. You thought the rebounding last night was bad? Wait until next year.

Obviously, it’ll be wait and see. But if we are sitting here at #10 or worse this time in 2010, it’s going to get interesting.

  11. TheCOWDOG 02/27/2009 at 7:35 PM #

How many teams can you guys think of has 3 three year starters?

Once you soak that in, how many of those teams have failed to take resonable advantage of this meld?

Throwing it out with no opinion of my own.
    (wolf cookies)

Would like to see the response, however.

  12. Gowolves 02/27/2009 at 7:54 PM #

Javi has become a pretty good guard. The shots he hits and the timing of those shots are almost “Wilson” like. I promise by the time he is a senior you will be praising him. Is he a NBA player?… No way! Right now he runs the offense like Lowe wants it run. The talent level is getting better. I think what the N&O writer is getting at is that we need more talent so we can play and defend like a RW tarhole team. UNC plays no defense and hopes to outscore every team they play. That hopefully will not be us. I agree we need a defensive coach and I hope they look that way in the off season.

  13. choppack1 02/27/2009 at 8:12 PM #

TheCowdog – good question. UNC has that now. It seems like FSU has had the same starting lineup since Hamilton arrived, but they haven’t.

I think it’s probably more common than we know. Of course, some would say that only 2 of these guys started last year. Still, I see your point – but I really don’t think it’s just these guys.

I really think if you could take these guys as sophomores or freshmen this year, you’d see a different result. I think Sidney has grown as a coach and a motivator and a manager. If Sidney knew 2 years ago what he knew now – I don’t think last year would have ended up like it did – at least I hope it wouldn’t.

“in my opinion we’re worse off in all those areas except that we no longer have to endure the pain of watching an offense predicated on 3-point bricks…”

This team no better than last years? What have you been smoking?

“thanks to Jed giving the team an extra day in South Florida to save air fare, an important rest day will be lost.”

Wasn’t the use of commercial vs. charter what was done to save money? The kids seemed to be happy with an extra day in FL during spring break. Or don’t you remember spring break in FL?

I wouldn’t worry about an “extra day of rest” like that’s what they would be doing in Raleigh, “resting”.

Thinking back to the beginning of the season, I remember saying that if the team was giving effort and not another embarrassing story like last year, I would be satisfied. Well, I’m satisfied. We’re right on what I thought would be our win/loss total, with a good chance to hit my high expectation of 6 wins and a decent chance to pass it.
I’m not sure how anyone can say that this team/coach have not both improved this year. I don’t know how good we will be next year with a team relying on a lot of young guys, but at this time, we’ve improved by at least the measure I was looking for.

  17. Greywolf 02/27/2009 at 10:25 PM #

“Sidney’s last job with the Pistons had him basically in charge of scouting the opponents offense and developing the defensive game plan for the Pistons IIRC.”

It’s likely that with the athletes available to most any pro bb team, scouting and strategy could make the difference in winning and losing. With college bb, strategy, scouting and coaching aren’t quite as impactful because of the difference in athletic ability and talent levels of various teams.

    In football
    1. It doesn’t much matter what offense you run, if you have big, fast players,
    2. If you have small, fast players, you run a finesse offense.
    3. If you have big, slow players, you run a power offense.
    4. If you have small, slow players, see No.1.

Our basketball team was between No. 3 and No. 4. Sid’s offense had to make up for our defensive liabilities. Our thinking it was inexcusable, disgraceful, outrageous, etc., for teams to come back on us is our being oblivious to the athleticism we lacked on defense. Wake didn’t have to have Teague do anything different with Fells on him, all they had to do was use the remaining talent to full advantage.

Don’t think Sid can coach? Go back and read the evaluations of Fells, Costner, Javi, Horner, Degrand etc., and tell me what coach could beat Calorina with the array of talent.

You can’t coach speed and verticle leap. (Yes, I know it can be improved.) The coaches we like to point to who come in and turn programs around over night, aren’t working with a bunch of slow white boys like the ones old what’s his name recruited. Nothing against white boys, I’m one myself, but ours are slow and not all that big. Not being white doesn’t guarantee speed, e.g. Costner.

highstick: most of the world has used firefox and never look back. quite rarely you may need to use ie when firefox is not supported.

greywolf: nice post. at this point it is wait and see. but at this point we are cautiously optimistic that his ceiling is higher than his predecessor. also, this positive local press can’t hurt our recruiting. the way we finish this season is paramount.

“…too much glue and not enough macaroni…”
Brilliant and witty, the sort of commentary I read this blog for.

I think GW hit it, Sid is designing a game plan that fits the team’s abilities. I too worried about Sid’s ability to make the most of his players, but am now coming around to see that we just don’t have much in the way of players. “Not enough macaroni.” Sid has repeatedly said that he wasn’t too worried about the scoring – he knew that would come. What should have been a red flag was what he wasn’t saying, he WAS worried about the ability to stop anyone. How many guards have schooled us this year? Speed and quickness are a problem.

Perhaps I’m overly optimistic, but I think next year looks exciting. We won’t be upper echelon, but we should be more athletic which (I hope) means better defense. Sid seems to be a strong offensive coach, so hopefully we’ll keep up in that area. The big question for me is, who will be the go to players? Who will get us that “must have” basket and who will be our “lock down the other team’s stud” defender? Without those key guys, our already low margin for error gets more challenging. But (peering through my Wolfpack red glasses) I think we’ll have players that play hard from tip to buzzer consistently from game to game – and that makes us much easier to watch.

what a difference 18 days makes:
    (Feb 10, 2009)
“It’s important to remember that it’s not just Lowe’s third year at NC State, it’s his third year as a college coach. Lowe still has plenty of time to prove himself, but each year that passes without him showing any progress is another year that the rumbling of dissatisfaction in Raleigh grows louder. ”

    About next year

    1) Williams is as or will be as good as Fells. My guess is he will be more consistent too.
    2) Smith is a better offensive player than McCauley. The question is can he do the rest?
    3) I will assume Costner is back until I hear differently.
    4) Given his improvement so far I think it is safe to assume he will be better.
    5) Brown will be the best player on this team next year.

The questions are will the backups be as good. Will JT be able to contribute. Will Howell? Will Wood? Will it click for Mays? Will there be more recruits that can make an impact.

IMO we will be better next year. But then again I am a State fan and have to be an optimist.

I can see us struggling a little early but when it clicks we can be a good team. Horner, Javi and Smith have been the most consistent players in the past 4 or so games.

  23. PoppaJohn 02/28/2009 at 8:48 AM #

^^ JeremyH – That’s a very good article. He’s giving Sid credit for recruiting and game strategy, but low marks for player development. And obviously noting that there has not been much success since the end of the first year. Of the three basics, player development was probably his lowest priority in the NBA. The more seasoned players “is what dey is”, and you just try to plug what they do into a team scenario.

So maybe that is his greatest opportunity for growth. Monte should be helping him with it, but that remains to be proven. Agree we haven’t seen any. Remember how Horner showed so much potential his first year? And we all thought, give him a year or two and watch out. Maybe it’s Horner, maybe the coaching. We need a longer sample to make that determination.

^ Rick – Agree generally and am optimistic, but question your assumption that Costner will improve. I (really – really – really) hope so, but my admittedly selective memory recalls the Costner of the late season & ACCT Sid’s first year as the best we’ve seen. He was unstoppable – ‘All Everything’. He’s had some really good games this year (and some disappearances) but has he reclaimed that level?

Not a perfect quote, but one time after a good Costner performance in the post-game interview Sid said something like, “when Costner hits his first couple of shots, he’s into the game on both ends and good things happen.” What he didn’t say was the opposite, if things don’t go well, he sometimes takes the night off.

What I’m hoping we’ll see in “Sid’s boys” are players that play hard start to finish. If the shots aren’t falling, you still play defense with everything you’ve got.
