The Point Guard Drought, Contextualized

NC State’s last all-ACC point guard, as you all know, was Chris Corchiani (1990-91). Here is what we believe to be a comprehensive list of other programs’ PG representatives on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team all-conference, in the post-Fire era:

Boston College (1) – Tyrese Rice*
Clemson (2) – Terrell McIntyre, Chris Whitney
Virginia Tech (1) – Jamon Gordon**
Duke (7) – Bobby Hurley, Chris Collins, Jeff Capel, Steve Wojciechowski, Jayson Williams, Chris Duhon, Greg Paulus
Florida State – none***
Georgia Tech (5) – Jon Barry, Travis Best, Stephon Marbury, Tony Akins, Jarret Jack
Maryland (2) – Steve Blake, Greivis Vasquez
Miami – none**
UNC (5) – Derek Phelps, Jeff McInnis, Ed Cota, Raymond Felton, Ty Lawson
Virginia (4) – Cory Alexander, Harold Deane, Donald Hand, Sean Singletary
Wake Forest (3) – Robert O’Kelley, Justin Gray, Chris Paul

* 4th ACC season
** 5th ACC season
*** Toney Douglas is a lock for all-ACC this season

The numbers speak for themselves – it’s clear that NC State has had the worst line of PG play in the ACC (ever since we voluntarily de-emphasized the basketball program in 1990). Not surprisingly, there is a strong correlation between the number of PGs on this list and the amount of success each program has enjoyed.

“How ironice that Herb now has James Harden and his team is doing well again. But I do not think Herb has any young PGs to replace Harden when he goes pro.”

Harden isn’t a PG. I think a servicable guy named Glasser is the PG over there.

Engin was pretty good, not great. This team could go a long way with a guy like Engin running the show.

As far as the Wall debate goes, you have to swing for the fences. I understand that. And I understand that his presence would elevate the competition in practices. But if he chooses to go elsewhere, my heart won’t be shattered. A one and donner can do a lot for a program, but when you aren’t Kansas and a program that really has a lot of rebuilding to do, I think it can be detrimental to the health of the program. Doesn’t sound like he’s going to pick us anyways, so let’s just get on with it.

I’ve pointed this out before. Amazing that in 18 years we could not recruit ONE guy who could be an All ACC PG. Not ONE!!! This at a school that has had some of the best to play in the ACC.

    Amazingly pathetic.

I think if Wall were going to come to State he’d have committed by now. Some kids commit early because they don’t like the recruiting process and want to be done with it so they can relax and play ball. Others seem to like the attention. I think he’s in the attention group.

If he were excited about coming to State and wanted to help us grab another stud (Cousins, or another nice big), he would recognize that committing sooner would boost our chances of making the team around him better.

Not every five star recruit’s a one-and-done. Wall may be, but if we get Cousins, there’s no reason to assume he’ll be gone in a year. As bad as Ga. Tech is Gani Lawal’s a five star recruit, who played his HS ball against Hickson, and he came back.

I don’t think we’ll be in a bad position if we get a couple of one-and-done’s next year.

We have Howell, Wood, Brown, Mays, Williams, and Thomas with Harrow and Leslie coming in to establish a solid core of a team. All a couple of one-and-done’s will do is hopefully help us win some games and raise the profile of the program.

Someone else will need to start the game threa today – I’m in Vegas and won’t even be watching.

I am extremely tired of sucking donkey balls, which is the nicest thing you can say about our program since 1989. Twenty years is way too long to go without an all conference point guard or a regular season/tournament championship.

Its time to stop talking about NC State as a basketball school.

We are no more a basketball school than The University of San Francisco or DePaul, both of which could once claim such a thing.

We will get throttled today, make no mistake, and everyone knows we will be neither surprised, nor bothered by it because we have become totally irrelevant.

    Totally irrelevant.

Also, how many final top 25 rankings can we claim since 1989?

    Vegas – where crazy happens

Wake – GT has been a great game

For those interested, it’s 60-59 Wake w/ about 11:30 to go

  9. Sw0rdf1sh 01/31/2009 at 1:53 PM #

Yup, GT in another close game. Two upsets in the top 5 would be nice today.

    OH WOW!!!

Wake throws the ball away w/ 7 seconds left tied game …

Shumpert pulls up and nails a jumper w/ 1 second left

    76-74 Tech

    IT’S OVER!!!

Tech gets it’s first win against Wake Forest no less

Maybe this will be a day of magic!

    See everybody at the game!

Ok, maybe not – but it should be fun nonetheless

    GO PACK!!!
