wufpup76 Recaps Exhibition Opener

I carved this completely out of the comments section – I offer wufpup76 a well-earned hat tip:

Just got back from the game … Here is my postgame report –

– Obviously, the big news of the night is the injury to Johnny Thomas, which is very unfortunate … I did’nt see it happen (obscured view), but he was definitely in some pain … He was part of the second unit in the rotation and prior to the injury he looked like he had full range of mobility and had a nice athletic slam that said “my knee is ok” … I really hope the injury isn’t too bad for Johnny as he has had enough injuries already; if he’s healthy, he has the potential to be a major contributor

– Starting five consisted of Gonzalez, C.J. Williams, Fells, Costner and McCauley for tonight’s game … The starting five played for roughly the first five minutes and then was completely rotated out with Degand, Fergs, Thomas, Horner, and Tracy Smith

– Brandon Costner looks like an entirely different person … he has lost a lot of weight and appears to be in good shape … At the end of the first half and the start of the second half he sort of reverted back to last season and had some bad turnovers and missed a rebound opportunity … He was benched early in the second half in favor of Horner, and was clearly frustrated by his play … I’m putting this more in the category of shaky confidence left over from last season and pressing too hard to be all world again like in March of ’07 … Either way, we’ve got to find a way for him to get his confidence back all the way and keep it up … he’s vital to this team’s chances of being a pleasant surprise

– Ft. Valley State was completely overmatched, so try and temper your judgements from this game … There were some positives for the Pack, but the Wildcats were outclassed in most areas (aside from rebounding, I’ll get to that later) and in addition turned the ball over as if that was the goal of their offensive sets

– The starting five came out and looked pretty good in man D and was able to get a couple of quick and easy transition baskets … C.J. Williams looked slightly hesitant at first but quickly found his rhythm and looked pretty good for a freshman w/ no experience … He hit a nice turnaround baseline jumper about 3 minutes in which went a long way to giving him some confidence

– The best player on the court tonight was Courtney Fells and it looked like he knew it … There was a different feel about him tonight as you could see how confident he was in everything he did … Great all around game from Fells, which included leadership on the floor and some good hustle on the defensive end … No question about who our leader was tonight

– Farnold Degand looked good and didn’t appear to have any limitations associated w/ his injury … He made a great hustle play in the second half that ended with him on the floor, and he hopped right up … We’re a different team w/ Farnold on the floor, as he provides defense and rebounding from the 1 … I think he will wind up as the starting 1, w/ Javi getting plenty of minutes (as he should)

– Speaking of Javi, he had a decent game … The game got really sloppy for a 10 minute stretch in the first half and we were unable to really pull away … Sidney was clearly annoyed, and Javi turned the ball over on a particualarly bad play around the 10:30 mark of the first half … Javi was subbed out and Sidney really got into him for a few seconds, so Javi still has a little ways to go in game management and defense, but the halfcourt sets looked far better than the last half of last season and Javi had some really nice passes and knocked down an open 3

– When Javi was subbed out, we got our first look at Julius Mays … He looked ok in the first half, a little shaky w/ the ball and a couple of lazy passes as you would expect from a freshman point guard w/ no experience … In the second half, Ft. Valley State applied some on-ball pressure and Mays had a couple of bad turnovers … he looked very much like Javi did at times during his trial-by-fire last season … So, Mays has more than a few things to learn but looked ok for the most part

– Fergs nailed a couple of open three’s tonight and played really well, particularly in the second half on both offense and defense … Horner was effective but missed some open jumpers … Tracy Smith was the workhorse you’d expect him to be … McCauley had a couple of nice stickbacks including a one-hand follow jam, but got few rebounds and didn’t look great defensively

– Simon Harris – I wish this guy could see more time … He didn’t come in until the 11:00 minute mark of the 2nd half and immediately proceeded to get an offensive rebound … Within 3 minutes, he had 4 points and 3 rebounds – 2 of them offensive rebounds … Harris finished w/ 9 points and 7 rebounds in 11:00 of play … Sure, it was Ft. Valley State, but Harris did this when he came into games last season … Nothing defines hustle as much as defense and offensive rebounding, and Harris is the best offensive rebounder we have without question … The guy has a nose for the ball and I hope he’s able to work his way more into the rotation

– Now for the really bad stuff … Rebounding was awful … Way too many offensive rebounds allowed and they out-rebounded us for the game … Poor effort here …

– We again allowed way too much easy dribble penetration, particularly in the 2nd half … We’ve got to find a way to plug this up immediately or last season’s fate awaits … The few times we switched to a 2-3 zone we looked particularly awful with the first possesion resulting in a wide open lob for them and the next few in our 2-3 we gave up wide open shots … Kinda scary

Overall, pretty fair effort – aside from rebounding and lax D in the second half … I certainly came away much more enthused about this exhibition as opposed to last season’s against Pembroke where we looked lethargic and severely overrated … Tempo was ok and Degand and Gonzalez played fairly well, and the halfcourt sets went pretty well tonight … As usual, we need to get tougher defensively and find away to get some boards … We’ll see what happens Tuesday night

I thought PG did OK on offense running the team (with exception of Mays). Where they are truly lacking is defense…all three PGs were taken at will off the dribble…

This team is in big trouble against any opponent with a quick athletic PG, because when you get dribble penetration, as others point out above, you get killed on defensive rebounding because your bigs have to rotate over to pick up the penetrating guard, leaving the back side open for easy putbacks or passes out to wide open wing players.

^ Which would mean we’d get killed by at least 9 or 10 other teams in the ACC.

Yep, which is why my general assessment is that they looked like about how I would expect a bottom third major conference team to look…

NIT is a realistic goal from this team, unless we see dramatic improvement throughout November.

I said, ***especially last season***, that I thought Simon Harris deserved more PT. I didn’t see the game last night, but last season I thought that Lowe should have used Harris’ play an as example to the rest of the team. The kid makes a difference whenever he’s in the game. I believe he could set a different tone for all the interior players, he just needs to be allowed in sooner, and more often.

What was it, 9 points, 7 rebounds, in 11 minutes last night?

Another thing, I’d rather get beat by a superior point guard, then watch as put back after put back goes through the opposing basket. I say force our PGs to play defense while knowing that that our interior players are going to be focused more on position rebounding than bailing them out. Hell, the opposition is going to make/miss some shots, whether there is someone hanging all over them or not. I’d rather play position BB, help out on occassion, but key on improving at rebounding the basketball first and foremost.

Factoring in the fact that we were playing a D-II team, we have a lot of work to do and a long ways to go. At individual moments, we played hard and looked sharp. But overall, I thought we were disjointed both offensively and defensively. Maybe some of that was the substitution pattern. We’ll eventually settle into a 7-8 man rotation.

Speaking of rotation, there was a noticeable drop off in execution from that first team to the second team. However, on that second team, Ferguson and Horner, had overall very good games (aside from a couple of missed dunks by Horner). As for Thomas, it is unfortunate about the injury. And maybe I was not paying close attention or something, but I didn’t think he looked that good. He may have hustled. But he didn’t get any rebounds (traffic or no traffic), and a couple of plays before he got hurt, he got beat BAD off the dribble. CJ and Javi looked good except for some defensive breakdowns, which the entire team had all night. But we’re going to need more production from the 2 guard. Maybe Ferguson and CJ together can get it done. Mays looked awful, lost. Degand was terrible. The hustle plays mentioned were because he was chasing balls he lost on the dribble. He was no where near the fastest man on the court, and constantly dribbed into trouble.

Fells was awesome and looked like a leader. Costner with his “fro”hawk, did not look good. He’s going to have to get back to going strong to the hoop. Last night every time he went to the hole, he got the alligator arms and just threw the ball up, but brought his arms back down to protect himself. Go hard or go home. He went home to the bench. Ben had flashes of his brilliant self. But I thought most of his nice passes were in the last 8 min of the game when nobody was playing any defense. Plus he got burned several times on defense, once two possessions in a row. The last 8 min is also when Smith scored all his points. So, for me, it was hard to say whether Smith had a nice game or not.

Nobody rebounded. I don’t see any silver lining there. Sydney keeps talkinga bout attitude and “want-to”. Nobody seems to really want to put the work in to get rebounds. I’d make my starting line up solely on who rebounds.

It’s just the first exhibition (if you don’t count the Canada trip) so I’m not too worried – as long as these things are corrected early on. Waiting until the second half of the season is too late.

The lack of fans at the game kinda surprised me. I hope in the two regular season games at Reynolds we can pack it full and get that old Reynolds feel

I’m not really surprised at the lack of attendance. In prior years (at least as far back as 99), exhibition game tickets were included in the season ticket package.

BTW, based on box scores, attendance was 3800 vs. about 8500 for the first exhibition game last season.

The most impressive stat line was Fergie’s (IMO):
In 16 mins, 9 points (3-3), 4 assists, 0 TO, and 3 steals. Hopefully he has earned a start for the next game.

I don’t care how many points Javi scores if he throws 8 assists.

The metrics for PG are assists, no turnovers, and effectively guarding the other PG.

As far as NC State’s loyal attendance for BB goes, I left work early, got a child out of middle school so she could witness the event with me, then drove three and half hours to attend Sidney Lowe’s FIRST official game as the new head coach at NC State, only to walk into a RBC that felt a funeral home. I could go into my usual rant about the huge introduction that the good folks at NC State put together for their new head coach, but you’ve heard it already, so I’ll spare you this time.

Sidney Lowe has got to re-invent the excitement and spirit around Wolfpack BB so that the student body will get more involved, but I’ll be damned if the athletic department and the SID couldn’t at least try to assist him a little in that chore, on campus anyway.

but don’t you see, when you get beat by a superior point guard, then the result is going to be those putbacks…the alternative is for the big men to ignore the PG driving down the lane? The result of that would just be layups and dunks… Get used to it, we’re going to see a lot of that in January and February.

After reading all the assessments i don’t know what to think. Before any of you guys write reviews…put a disclaimer at the top like: [Pre-review Disclaimer: My wife and I made another kid before the game] Costner was THE MAN!!! or [Pre-review Disclaimer: I caught my wife with our neighbor] Javi forgot how to dribble!!

Seriously, i think your day/week/the economy may be affecting how you see the game.

^Wouldn’t it go more like this?

[Pre-review Disclaimer: My wife and I made another kid before the game] I am THE MAN!!!

  16. redfred2 11/08/2008 at 7:58 PM #

Classof89, my point is…we need interior players that go HARDER after rebounds, and big men who work harder on blocking out, than they do when trying to block opposing guard’s shots.

I do not care what anyone says, ***IF*** you know how to play POSITION defense in BB, you DO NOT have to be as fast, as tall, or as physically gifted in order to hamper an opponent’s ability to score or even pass the basketball. You might not ever shut anyone totally down, but if you halfway think while on the court, take note of an offensive player’s tendancies, stay between them and where they want to go, then you can be a thorn in their side more often than they want or expect you to be. You’ve just got to figure out what parts of that player’s game you can disrupt, and what parts you really can’t, then make him work harder than they ever expect to even get into position to use their physical advantages. You actually have to slow down, stand your ground and anticipate, more than running around out of control like a chicken with his it’s head cut off.

Plus, I want our bigs to stop the opposing players that they’re ultimately responsible for stopping. They can’t do that by leaving them wide open in order to go over and cover someone else’s player/responsibility.

Sometimes someone is going to go off and light it up, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. Hell, I’ve even gotten in the zone and done it on occassion myself. But when the same position on the court gets abused night in and night out, then there are basic problems with that player’s approach to playing defense.

Notes on Exhibition #2 vs. Catawba:

    – Johnny Thomas dressed but did not play

    – Starting five consisted of Degand, Williams, Fells, Costner, and McCauley

    – Catawba is a much better team than Ft. Valley State; Still Div. II, but a definite step-up in competition … I was impressed w/ their execution … They were still overmatched, but this is a team that could definitely beat a lot of 150+ RPI Div. 1 teams

    – There is an extremely different feel to Sidney Lowe this season, IMO … For the second straight game he was up and animated and was in charge … After a particularly bad defensive posession where we allowed easy penetration and had poor rotation, he quickly called a :30 second timeout and let the entire unit have it; At the same time he was quick to give positive encouragement with some fierce slaps to the behinds of players … The fire is back IMO

    – Team play and Degand were the stories of the night

    – Degand buzzed up and down the floor and looked good running the team … He hit some open jumpers and looked great driving to the basket and breaking down defenses on his way to leading the team in scoring … He’s not all the way back, but I once again came away very encouraged … He once again lost his man on defense on occasion, but I’m hopeful this will get better in time … It looked like he ran out of gas late in the 2nd half where he missed a couple of hustle plays, but overall another huge step in the right direction in coming back

    – If we can stay healthy, we are far ahead at the #1 than we were at this point last season … This is plain to see … Am I saying that we will have all-ACC point guard play this season? No, I am not – but we have two effective offensive point guards – Degand offers quickness, tempo, a nice set-shot, and defense when healthy; Javi offers good penetration, great passing, a good jumper, some steals, and sometimes like tonight – rebounding

    – The starting unit jumped right on them with high energy and good D highlighted by some up-tempo play led by Degand … Rebounding started out much better tonight and was maintained save for a few exceptions; McCauley did very nice work on the offensive glass especially in the 1st half … A lot of improvement from the last game in the rebounding department … Guys shared the ball really well tonight and there was pretty even scoring tonight … Costner’s play was steadily improved tonight as he got off to a hot start and managed to pull down a few boards as well … It was clear in a lot of our sets that we tried to isolate Tracy Smith down low when he was in the game, which is a move I agree wholeheartedly with, and it worked pretty well

    – Now for some of the scary stuff … Still not a lot of defensive pressure on the ball out top; Catawba was able to effectively use screens to set-up open shooters – this is a concern … There was a noticeable slight drop in energy for some reason when the second unit came in tonight (Javi, Fergs, Harris, Horner, Smith) – they played fairly well, but thought that was odd … Sort of a tale of two halves – the first half went quite well with good tempo control, effective sets, and decent D and rebounding … Second half start though was pretty lackidasical and the team play reminded me of last season for a few minutes – during this time Reynolds was as quiet and void of energy as I’ve ever felt it, but we did recover … Also need to mention that when Catawba gave any different look than straight man D we sort of reverted back to stagnant, stand around offense – Really, really scary … This also coincided w/ the start of the second half – but as I said, Sidney and company did recover and it didn’t last the rest of the half as it would have last season

Overall, I thought this was another positive effort and I can’t stress enough how much harder and together this team is playing as opposed to any point last season … This is a different team – I’m not saying that trying to drive up hopes, but it is clearly a different team that at least appears like it’s willing to put in hard work … I have come away from each of these exhibition games feeling positive as opposed to any other feeling …

I think it’s actually good that we start out the season on the road to a team we lost to last season … We could get a early litmus test on this team’s character this Saturday evening, but I like what I see so far (as far as character and chemistry) … Here’s to hoping we can get off to a good start … We’ll see what happens Saturday! Go Pack! ๐Ÿ™‚
