Wolfpack improves to 3-0 with Winthrop waxing

Some Wolfpackers on the idiot message boards wanted to see a blowout tonight in light of Winthrop’s struggles to this point of the season.

They got their wish.

The Wolfpack did it with defense tonight, cruising to a 26 point victory. (For the record, Davidson previously beat Winthrop by an almost identical, 27 points.)

The Wolfpack (3-0) held Winthrop to 29 percent from the field, delivering for the first time the kind of performance you’d expect from an ACC team against an opponent from a so-called mid-major conference.

N.C. State had struggled at times while winning 65-59 over New Orleans and 69-56 over High Point in its first two games. But against Winthrop, senior center Ben McCauley scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for his first game in double figures in both categories since the 2006 ACC tournament, and the Wolfpack ran out to a 40-24 halftime lead.

Though Winthrop has struggled to score at times this season, the 48 points were 10 short of its previous season low.

The Wolfpack placed four players in double figures and committed only six turnovers on the evening with Javi Gonzalez and Julius Mays running the point as Farnold Degand remains sidelined with tendinitis in his knee.

The ballhandling duties must have taken a lot out of the combination of guards because Gonzalez and Mays combined to go 0-8 shooting from the field. For the night, the Wolfpack hit only 7 of 23 three pointers for just over 30% from the arc and only 30% from the floor for the game.

State fans hope the Wolfpack can avoid some of unexpected losses to cupcakes that plagued the program last season (ECU & New Orleans). On the immediate radar — the team will try to get through exams and avoid an upset from UNC-Greensboro (Sunday) before traveling to Charlotte to play Davidson on December 6th.

I hope I am wrong but our gurad play does not make me think we will be very good this year.

Isn’t the tall white kid Lewandowski? He can’t play basketball anymore due to his knees(?), but maybe they continue to let him hang around the program….

I think we’re probably all a little suspect of this team after last year, and so will probably have a generally critical view of their performances until they really show something.

Otis, I’m not having any problems getting to the site. Sometimes I have that problem. After deleting the cookie, it usually works right again.

Wufpup, I think your review was right on. The tall kid was Bartosz L. He’s still in school, and hopefully, he goes on to do great things off the court…

Seth Curry, a true freshman at Liberty and Stephen’s little brother, dropped 26 on Virginia in their win at Charlottesville. Seth is averaging 22 in three games this year. I don’t think I can stand seeing another Curry being a better guard than anybody we have for the next four years.

I saw a Zaxby’s commercial featuring Spud Webb this morning – very cool.

“but Winthrop had way too many open shots and easy drives to the basket”

It’s a matter of opinion, but I didn’t see too many open shots … drives to the basket were another story as we need our guards to really step up in stopping dribble penetration

It’s my opinion that a ton of Winthrop’s shots came off of one-on-one moves w/ the ball as opposed to offensive execution … Anytime you’re forcing your opponent to dribble around w/ no passing lanes and then heave up a jump shot is usually a sign of good defense … I’ll take the kind of overall defensive effort the team showed last night all day, any day though compared to some of our “defensive” showings under Sidney in the past

Make no mistake, there is plenty of room for improvement in all phases and we may not be able to hang w/ the really good teams at this point … BUT, as compared to last season it at least appears that progress is being made and it’s undeniable that the effort level is way above any point of last season

Let’s hope for another good showing against a UNC-G squad that is struggling at the moment … *IF* we are able to get past Greensboro, then the matchup w/ Davidson could be a good barometer of where we stand … Davidson lost their point guard Richards who was very good, but they’re still strong … We’ll need Courtney, CJ, Trevor, Simon, and Johnny to probably all take turns against Curry … Our effort against him last season was actually pretty good, so hopefully we can get the same type of effort or better this season

    Go Pack 🙂

I beleive the game was the largest margin of victory in the SL era… a good sign especially against a well coached but inexperienced Winthop team. ( made NCAAs a bunch of late).

It does sound like there is progress.

Just Rotate Fells/Harris/Thomas on Curry and I think we’ll be ok. All 3 of them are athletic enough to keep up with him, and give him a helluva lot of problems. Trevor will get burned. I’m sure he’ll still put up 25 points though.

    “Trevor will get burned.”

Now Trip, while that statement may hold some truth, that still wasn’t a very PC thing to say, now was it?

I’ve been having weird issues with this site for over a week. It’s gotten very slow and inconsistent loading. I’d wondered if anyone else was experiencing the same also.

Fred, let me know how the fishing trip goes tomorrow! I really miss living in Eastern NC and enjoying those type trips! Hopefully, I’ll spend some time in the woods hunting Bambi’s older brother in December.

    Notes on Pack – Greensboro:

    – Johnny Thomas and Farnold Degand DNP

    – Defense took a small step back today, as the Spartans were able to get a few easy looks against our aggressive man D … Even Fells got juked a couple of times … We did cause double digit turnovers though, and played the passing lanes pretty well causing a lot of defelections and steals … We scored quite a bit on their turnovers … So, not a bad effort but on ball defense should be one of the keys we work on for improved defense

    – We won the rebounding war led by another good effort from Ben McCauley … Ben had his second straight double-double in points and rebounds I believe … Costner got into early foul trouble and could never find his rhythm today; The few minutes he did play in the first half he had two blocks and some other nice hustle defensive plays but finished w/ only about 5 rebounds

    – The Spartans threw pretty much everything at us defensively, at times showing a 2-1-2 full court trap, some 2-3 zone, some man, but mostly they played a 1-3-1 zone w/ some trapping … The good news is we had no trouble moving the ball against the zone; the bad news is we missed a ton of open outside shots – I mean wide open … Some of this was by design, as we held a significant advantage on the interior so the Spartans chose to give us open outside looks agains the zones and we obliged by missing plenty of shots … It’s good that we are already forcing teams to pick their poison, but in order for it to be effective we will have to hit more open outside shots than we did today

    – When we did get the ball inside, there was pretty much no stopping either McCauley or Tracy Smith … So far this season when the ball goes into Smith he has been about as automatic as they come … We could see a lot of zone against Davidson next week b/c we have a clear advantage on the interior, so we’ll need Fells, Ferguson and company to hit some open shots to loosen them up …

The good news so far is that both Javi Gonzalez and Julius Mays have been able to run some good zone offense w/ great ball movement so far – especially Javi … We had a couple of really nice lob plays over the zone – one to McCauley, one to Fells – and in addition it was clear that Sidney made an adjustment against the zone for us not to take the first open outside look … We tried to work the ball around and isolate either McCauley or Smith (depending on who was in the game) and this was very effective in the second half

    – Overall, it was another pretty good, solid effort that resulted in a 27 point victory … The Spartans aren’t worldbeaters by any stretch this season but the good news is that we executed pretty well against every defensive look they gave us … We just need to start making open outside shots and improving on ball defense!

Can’t wait for the Davidson game! … Go Pack!

Will wait and see until they play somebody. I am not that impressed .
