State/Maryland Game Thread

Marlyand 27 – NC State 24 FINAL

The Wolfpack defense yields a drive to their two-yard line as the clock melts towards zeros, and Maryland makes a field goal try to once again put the Pack in the “Close, But No Cigar” department.   No moral victory, this.

24-24 nearing end of 3rd quarter.

17-17 at the half.  On offense, State looks pretty good, save for dropped balls that should have been caught.  Defense is, as usual, suspect.  Thin to begin with and depleted by injuries, this unit is undoubtedly a recruiting focus for Tom O’Brien and his staff.

Long, sustained drive by the Pack to open the game. NC State 7, Maryland 0.

I will not be able to update much longer, so please be active in the comments, especially if you have ESPN360!

    FG GOOD! 17-17 half.

  2. Sw0rdf1sh 10/25/2008 at 3:47 PM #

Holy shit, Hill dropped a sure fire TD and then gets called for offensive interference.

At least catch the easy ones Hill…even if it does get called back.

Wow! Sounds like there’s actually some football being played on our side of the field this week!!!!!!! Is it we’re getting better, or is the competition weaker? (hoping for the first, fearing the second)

    GO PACK!

Good first half. a few mistakes but its tough with all the rain. Great job offense. If our D can step up and hold a couple of times and we can get a few breaks (turnovers) we’ll be in business.
Russell Wilson has done a wonderful job with keeping this alive and making plays.

    GO PACK!!!

Despite the tied score we have 47 total offensive plays and they have 20. That tells me that our D needs to tighten up a bit but the important thing is that our Offense is sustaining drives and keeping their O off the field.
That fumble by us was really the only miscue. I have a feeling they’ll be a lot of those if the weather remains like this.

Could be better, could be worse. Running game will be key in the second half, and State has to get a top on that first possesion. But I like how the game is going so far.

Double the 1st downs, almost double total yards, triple the time of possession, and tied at half-time – that is what I was thinking of when I said sputtering. I am thrilled we are in this game, and moving the ball, but when you catch a big break, getting the ball back like we did, we really need to get the TD.

^In fairness to the D, our fumble was almost a guarenteed 7 points for them … Their fumble was at the 50 and only cost them 3

3rd and 25 now…underneath pass to JE who scrambles up.

15 seconds for the kicker to get on the field and he nails it.

    Halftime. TIE ass game.

Once again, we seem to be controlling a team and yet not winning the game.

    The positives:

Our OL is getting it done.
RW is still playing smart ball. Even though he has dropped the ball twice, we have recovered.
Our Defense has not been on the field for very long as they have been in the past games this year.

    Negatives:
Dropped passes. (it is raining off and on…and when it does it does so in buckets)
TJ isn’t looking like himself, but again, soggy is as soggy does.

That was as great first half and we looked like a great offensive team. Our D needs to stop these guys and just play smart ball. As I mentioned earlier, our DB’s need to pop someone and stop the arm tackles….this has killed us all year.

    MSU:14
    Michigan:14 Half

Dumb ass pass interference in the end zone with :20 left.

After the first 2 drives by NC State the passing game is either feast or famine. The incompletes are maddening. Either RW overthrows the receiver (which is entirely possible with the weather) or the receiver’s can catch it if it hits them in the hands (Calling Mr. Hill).

Defense hasn’t done anything and they will have to step up in the 2nd half if we’re going to win.

The offense is keeping the ball out of Maryland’s hand. Even though it’s not pretty we’re moving the ball when we don’t go ULTRA conservative when inside our own 20.

If we commit a penalty it’s obvious we can’t get a first down (or try to) so we might as well punt once the ball is moved back.

OL is doing a great job protecting RW and RW is doing a great job of allowing more time for the receivers to get open. Now they just need to start getting seperation (without pushing off, Hill) and catch the ball when it hits them in the hands.

Again, Defense has to stop Maryland and make them punt it at some point in this game and we can’t turn the ball over again.

Did I hear right? State had the ball for 14:00 MORE than Maryland in the first half??? Almost a full QUARTER more?? Our D should feel like they haven’t even played a snap yet!

    Hard nosed second half….GO ‘PACK!!!

Was the pass interference a bad call?

Tony Haynes said it was close, if I heard correctly

  15. wufpup76 10/25/2008 at 4:12 PM #

Defense not exactly making a statement coming out of the half …

  16. RabidWolf 10/25/2008 at 4:12 PM #

    WTF?? PLAYING SOFT?? NOW??

  17. wpackman33 10/25/2008 at 4:12 PM #

That was too easy. Come on D.

    24-17 Terps

  18. gopack968 10/25/2008 at 4:13 PM #

This looks more like our defense. Maryland scores on a 24 yard run – following a pass interference call on us 🙁

  19. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/25/2008 at 4:13 PM #

    ABSOLUTELY ZERO DEFENSE.

Can’t Tackle my 90 year old grandmother.

  20. BJD95 10/25/2008 at 4:13 PM #

Our defense sucks. I reiterate – we should almost never punt, and always onside kick. 17 points per half won’t be enough.

  21. Sw0rdf1sh 10/25/2008 at 4:14 PM #

The pass interference call was just like every other deep ball lob we have D’ed up all year. We keep letting teams take advantage of us. Sounds like Archer needs to have about 1000 of those drills set up in practice.

They ran the ball in with us attempting arm tackle after arm tackle. We should tell our guys that they have shoulder pads on.

  22. 1.21 Jigawatts 10/25/2008 at 4:14 PM #

The Pass Interference call was Right On. Never made a play on the ball and almost took his head off 2 seconds before the ball got there.

  23. wufpup76 10/25/2008 at 4:15 PM #

    Another fumble!!! YAY

  24. Sw0rdf1sh 10/25/2008 at 4:17 PM #

3rd dropped ball by RW today. We recover.

    again.

He makes up for it for running for about 20 on the next play.

    WAY TO GO Russell!
