Bowden & Spence out at Clemson [8th Update, 12:00 pm]

Be sure to look below to read the updates to the story as they happen…

Tommy Bowden has been relieved of his duties as Clemson’s head football coach, effective immediately, Tigerillustrated.com has learned. Bowden told assistant coaches moments ago in a staff meeting.

We talked about this in detail on Friday in a comprehensive entry that includes a great list of potential candidates for replacement.

The more I think about this the more I see the same strategy that UNC-CH implemented in their firing of John Bunting almost two years ago — By firing Bunting as early as they did, Carolina enjoyed “first mover advantage” in the coaching market and therefore had the benefit of exploring options before other schools who ultimately lost their coaches at year end. It worked fantastically well for the Tarheels who most certainly would have not been able to hire Butch Davis later in the year when the Alabama job opened.

Like a quarterback with an infinite amount of time to sit in the pocket to check through progressions, Clemson will now have plenty of time to make private overtures to a host of candidates without having to work under any kind of pressure-filled time table.

Tommy Bowden fired

WYFF (Greenville SC) Article

Update #1: Assistant head coach Dabo Swinney will take over the team for the remainder of the team’s season.Update #2: Dabo Swinney didn’t waste any time making the program his own (for at least the rest of this season). Swinney fired offensive coordinater, Rob Spence today.

Just got it confirmed that interim head coach Dabo Swinney has fired offensive coordinator Rob Spence.

Athletic director Terry Don Phillips gave Swinney the option to retain Spence or let him go. Spence, who was in his fourth season with the Tigers, left the McFadden Building about a half-hour ago.

Update #3: This kind of stuff from Mike Tirico is typical media crap that pisses me off and I’m not even a Clemson fan. ‘Block C’ came back with a good retort.

Update #4: Sounds like Tommy Bowden elected to walk away with a $3.5 million buyout. Word out of Clemson is that Bowden had the option to stay and try to save his job with (1) a run at an ACC Championship game appearance and (2) some mandatory staff changes. His decision to walk took the administration a bit by surprise.

Clemson fans will give kudos to the administration for pulling the trigger early, but someone should be asking why Bowden received such a large extension and buyout at the end of last year when it was obvious that a legitmiate possibility existed for him to be fired this year — let alone for him to be fired at midseason.

Why didn’t the Clemson administration simply let Bowden go to Arkansas last year and save themselves millions of dollars and lots of public relations issues? Bowden cannot be that coveted at Clemson if they are willing to let him go after 6 games this year and a .500 record.

Bowden has a decade-long track record at Clemson – how can this 3-3 record be that much of a shock? Clemson is playing below their talent level, but that has been a hallmark of just about every Bowden season at Clemson. Which begs the question, with that kind of track record, why did the Clemson administration give him an unnecessary large extension and buyout last year?

Update #5: The general thought in Clemson is that Dabo Swinney is auditioning for the job and if the Tigers can turn around their season then Swinney could be hired permanently. Although I hear really good things about Swinney’s future as a head coach, I can’t help but think that general philosophy for a major Division One program is a mistake. Can you say Mike O’Cain? Carl Torbush? Bill Stewart?

Update #6: Pat Forde’s thoughts.

Update #7: Bobby Bowden discusses his son being fired

“Oh, he’ll handle it good,” Bobby Bowden said. “Tommy’s not like me. You know, I mean he was one of those guys that was thinking a couple of years down the road anyway [he’d get out of coaching].”

While he talked with reporters, the elder Bowden seemed at peace that his son no longer had to deal with questions about his job security, and the pressures that surrounded Tommy Bowden while Clemson went from pre-season favorite to mid-season disappointment.

Update #8: Coaching Change Already Affecting Clemson Recruiting

You may want to keep your eyes on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Recruiting Blog over the next few days — it looks like things are melting down a bit for Tiger recruiting:

Clemson lost two of its top 2009 commitments within hours of coach Tommy Bowden’s resignation on Monday, according to TigerIllustrated.com.

Defensive back Craig Loston of Aldine, Texas, who was ranked as country’s No. 21 overall prospect by Scout, told the website he is finished with Clemson and will likely decide between Texas, LSU, Oregon.

Safety DeVonte Holloman of Rock Hill, S.C., has also backed off his commitment to Clemson. He said he’s looking at South Carolina and LSU.

Parting Wolfpackshot — Clemson’s offensive line has been significantly impacted by injuries this year that has obviously thrown the Tigers offense out of sync. Could you imagine the voracity and volume of excuses that would be recited by the NC State Sunshine Squad – the folks who think that anything that happens at NC State is the right decision – in a similar situation? Oh wait…sure you can.

Now the question becomes who will be their next head coach. My wife and I had the pleasure of hosting her cousin this weekend. Bob is a diehard Clemson fan, and his take was that the Tigers might be looking at Will Muschamp, the first year Defensive Coordinator at Texas. He said that some Clemson folks are talking up Skip Holtz, but keep in mind that Holtz was an assistant with the Coots (Clemson fans nickname for SoCar.) I suggested Lane Kiffin, given his ties to USC and his NFL experience, and he allowed that a few folks are talking about him too. Finally, I asked him what might happen if Rich Rodriguez, a former Clemson assistant, was let go at Michigan, where a growing number of folks are expressing their dissatisfaction and vocalizing the fact that RichRod is not a Michigan man. Said he hadn’t heard much about that, but that Rodqruiguez was very happy when he was on the Tiger sideline.

    This will be very interesting.

The first big domino has fallen – and it’s in the ACC … This should be intriguing

I am surprised that Clemson did not wait until the end of the year where you could have saved $500K and stretched out the buyout instead of one lump sum.

The AD would be on thin ice at this time if I was a Clemson fan. The extension was a costly mistake last Decemeber.

  4. Alpha Wolf 10/13/2008 at 11:08 AM #

They are probably following the model of UNC and giving Chuck Neinas a head start in getting the guy that they want. It’s probably better to do that than to wait until there is a crowd of suitors.

Smart move by Clemson. I was just talking with my brother about them this weekend, and we agreed that if we were Clemson fans, we’d want Bowden gone even if Clemson won out. In that case, why play out the string?

Now, let’s see if TOB can get any of Clemson’s commits to change their minds. In particular, Clemson has a commit from Tyler Shatley, NC fullback, that we were second for.

  6. Southbeachstyle 10/13/2008 at 11:12 AM #

    Bobby Johnson, from VAnderbilt.

  7. Pack92 10/13/2008 at 11:15 AM #

Wow! Even faster than anticipated but you can’t argue with the logic. Is Fat Phil or Tubbyville next?

  8. Lunatic Fringe 10/13/2008 at 11:20 AM #

Phil has decreed, “I will not quit”.

My money is on Phil being next.

That’s Clemson, they aren’t going to sit in the middle of the road, just waiting around, without at least trying to find some kind of an answer. Whether some people think it was the right thing to do or not, they made a decision, they acted, and they will work hard to figure a way to improve their FB program. Gotta admire that.

I live in Burke County and I know Tyler and his family. He’s an impressive young man, both on the field and in the community. I know his Dad is very impressed by TOB (let’s say he was less than impressed by Butch). You hear he’s a fullback, but you’d have to SEE this kid. He’s really a feature back, a 6’3″ 260 lb feature back. I think ultimately he could end up at MLB, very explosive and has the leverage to hold up at the point of attack. Sorry for the hijack …

I wonder if Foulup ever thinks about strategies for upgrading Wolfpack coaching between nibbles on his hook! NAAAAAAAAAAA!

    “Smart move by Clemson.”

I appreciate the ‘digging’ and ‘statistical analysis’ this site does… and would appreciate your considering two ‘avenues’ to continue this event.

    1) Financially, how can Clemson ‘afford’ this [I know they can't afford NOT to fire him, just] HOW CAN THEY afford his buyout and continue with another coach? LITERALLY how much will it cost them over the next few years–I thought he had just been given an enormous buyout; and:

    2) How might this affect their (& OUR) recruiting for this year? The EARLY announcement is meant to ‘stave off’ other programs from poaching their commitments [some will inevitably be lost] but WHICH recruits might be ‘wandering’ & available; &; (back to 1^) HOW MUCH is the ‘new world order cost’ for hiring a “national championship caliber coach” & how on earth will they afford him [i.e., aren’t ‘those’ guys in that category only available AFTER all the BCS bowls & [for all practical purposes] ‘after’ national signing day?

  13. grouchomarx 10/13/2008 at 11:59 AM #

howlie raises 2 excellent questions, I am particularly intrigued by #1, given a $4M(is that right?) buyout and the cost of a top name coach in the $2-$3M/year range. I’m sure their AD, T.D. Philips has done the math but thats a huge financial impact, regardless. I wonder how much heat he’s getting for giving Bowden the big raise/extension after last season?

  14. Alpha Wolf 10/13/2008 at 12:01 PM #

Howlie – I emailed your questions to Bob, my Clemson contact. I’ll post what he finds out.

  15. wufpup76 10/13/2008 at 12:03 PM #

“My money is on Phil being next.”

    ^Agreed.

I think the Clemson move puts that much more pressure on other coaches on the proverbial “hot seat” … Tenn. and Auburn certainly aren’t going to wait back for Clemson (or others) to be first in line for the #1 candidate in the nation – whether that’s done by someone like Chuck Neinas identifying someone who’s currently employed but interested or someone who’s unemployed on the open market … Tubs may sweat it out at Auburn, but the plug could be pulled on Fulmer any day now … The national media guys can whine all they want about waiting until the end of the season, but if you know you’re going to do it why not get the first jump … Why wait?

Like Daily Update and others have said this gives CU a huge jump on starting the back room dealing …

“I wonder how much heat he’s (the Clemson AD) getting for giving Bowden the big raise/extension after last season?”

Should be plenty of heat generated from that raise/extension … With the level of uncertainity surrounding Tommy Bowden seemingly every season I was surprised at that move … Your fans are not content, there are deflating losses every season – why not let him go to Arkansas? … I don’t know much about CU’s situation, but Philips would be lucky to come out of this unscathed

  16. PacknSack 10/13/2008 at 12:03 PM #

I’m pretty certain that Butch with “flirt” with Clempsun in an effort to extort another raise from Carolina.

He’ll get it, despite a severe budget crunch for the system and the state. We’ll be angry.

  17. Alpha Wolf 10/13/2008 at 12:06 PM #

    Who’s next? (great album, BTW)

I think Tuberville. UT take their football seriously, but even UT fans are not as crazy-rabid as Bama and Auburn fans. It does NOT help Tuberville that the Crimson Tide is sitting pretty for a run at the BCS Title and has gone back to more or less owning the state of Alabama in recruiting at the same time he is melting down.

  18. Daily Update 10/13/2008 at 12:17 PM #

IMO, Clemson is a more attractive job than either Auburn or UT due to it being in an easier conference. Some coach has got to be licking his chops to go to a school with all of the resources Clemson has and your biggest competition in your division is Wake Forest.

This is Clemson’s big chance. The timing was perfect. At NC State, he would have been allowed to finish the season because we can’t be “mean” to coaches. Our fans would have booed the team’s performance and then been criticized by the media.

Hasn’t Clemson fired Bowden every year for the last 5 or 6 years?

  20. backinpack 10/13/2008 at 12:34 PM #

I love that everyone is worried about how the buyout will be paid. I guarantee that the $4MM was raised (or at least committed) by boosters in the last 2 days so that they could dump his ass. We dog ADs all the time for being stupid — but they aren’t that dumb.

Not all ADs are stupid. Unfortunately ours is.

Fulmer should’ve been fired two or three years ago. He’s led his team into mediocrity. Tuberville has done a pretty good job at Auburn, but I don’t blame Auburn for firing him when they do.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard that Clemson had re-signed Bowden at the end of the year last year. I thought they were gonna pay for him to move down to Arkansas.

If I were the Tigers I’d take a long hard look at Skip Holtz, Bud Foster, Bobby Johnson, Mike Leach, Brian Kelly (Cincy), Jim Leavitt (USF), and I’d even take a look and see what the chances were of sneaking in and taking Jimbo Fisher from FSU.

It should be interesting. Hell…maybe Butch Davis will leave the Tarholes for the Tigers

8 months and 4 million dollars late.

“I guarantee that the $4MM was raised (or at least committed) by boosters in the last 2 days so that they could dump his ass.”

Centennial hosted NCAA president this weekend, and the topic was the athletic “arms race” going on in college sports. One more state down sir. So glad to know that the downer the economy has become hasn’t effected these good ole boys.

    ^ LOL!
Clemson is getting the jump on everyone else who will be looking. Smart for them. I’d guess Johnson or Holtz right now are getting calls.
