College Football Saturday- Week 1 Open Thread

I thought I’d put this up to leave a place for folks to comment on the first Saturday of college football. If you’re like me, this marks the first of many Saturdays filled with grilled food and the beverage of your choice.

Plenty of action today, VT and ECU are at it now, and in a surprise Hawaii and Florida are in a low scoring game in the Swamp. Later in the day we get Virginia/USC (the Yankees of college football- read into that what you will) and Clemson/Alabama in a night game. Plus a smattering of other games, some more interesting than others. (Me for example, I’m enjoying Wisconsin vs. partial qualifier university, err, Akron.)

Have at it.

Skip Holtz is a phony. He may be a good coach but he is a phony.

The refs fucked Bowling Green twice in the 4th (inadvertent whistle cost them a TD). Doesn’t matter, cause Pitt blows. INT, that’s the ballgame.

Lou Holtz will be even more insufferable than usual today.

Feel free to say let it go, but at football camp in the mid-1970s, he acted like he was so far superior to the rest of us who were actually paying to be there.

By the way, does anybody know of a way to get Wolfpack Sports Network radio broadcasts over the internet besides packpass?

I agree with you Howlie.. I see some of the same things happening with us as well, but we are 2 years behind them right now.

I bet Beamer wishes he did something different on those 2 4th downs in the 1st..

The coastal is officially wide open!

I do wonder about the O-line recruits we signed this past year who are not in the two deep. Is the learning curve that steep that d-linemen are more prepared than they are to grasp the system or should we see them getting a lot more reps soon? Are they competing and may break into the lineup soon or are we redshirting a lot of them? Besides, why not get Brandon Barnes into the rotation in the secondary given how thin it is?

Anyone see the GameDay guys trash the ACC? Talking about what real disappointment the expanded conference was – due to VTech, Miami and FSU’s mediocre play the last few years. How bad is it when I’ve got to pull for the Hokies.

App – oh well. Didn’t expect a win there. And this year I got to leave and go to Lowes. something I never managed to do last year. On to the Southern Conference season. Upsetting Division 1 schools is great, but I want a 4th national title more.

Everyone was poo-pooing my LSU/AppSt. prediction…now hopefully AppSt. will win another national championship…it obviously means alot in the scheme of things.

Nice to see UMich getting their butt spanked at halftime

I think it’s the difference between an 18 yo freshman and a 20 or 21 yo jr or senior. Sending a boy against some of these men they would see on the DL is not smart or humane. I don’t expect to see them in the line-up this year. Jake Vermiglio was an exception. So was Curtis Crouch but most need the physical maturity and muscle added in the weight room. There can be as much as 3 years difference in physical age for any given chronological age. This starts to even out in their 20’s.

Before we write VT off, we should remember the shellacking they took from LSU their first game last year — worse than App today. Hand wringing, a popular sport here, is premature for VT, NCSU and other teams that get beaten in August.

Keep it natural, Carolinas. I laughed as ECU beat VPI. They played a tight game against them last year as well and I heard pirate speech aplenty leading up to our game. I’m not saying a repeat is in the works, but I am saying the ECU has a tendency to pull an ECU and screw up their season at the perfect moment. King of like NC State.

Acc taking it on the chin so far against quality competition … I hope Clemson can get a win tonight – if not, “ACC SUCKS” is all we’ll hear all year 🙁 … Speaking of Acc, Delaware is only down 7 to UMd w/ 4 min. left

Utah is dominating Michigan … The Utes have been impressive … I don’t mind Michigan too much, but I’m glad Rodriguez is having a bad debut (though there’s almost an entire quarter left as I’m typing this – plenty of time for a comeback) …

Not too many great games today, though Hokies-Pirates was entertaining … I hope Clemson vs. Bama and/or Illinois vs. Mizzou will be good games

Regarding OL, you REALLY dont want to play those guys before their redshirt sophomore year. Of course, we might be forced to do so this year. But it’s far from ideal.

    A phony what?

  15. Par Shooter 08/30/2008 at 7:17 PM #

I’d take Holtz in a freaking heartbeat at this point.

  16. DAMangum 08/30/2008 at 7:50 PM #

Ismael, I do believe you said “56-0”, which is not close to 41-13. I’m the one who said App St. will atleast score a couple times.

It’s early, but Clemson is getting their butts kicked all over the field. There was all of the talk about CU’s speed, and the great RB tandem, but how could the “experts” be talking about all of that, and at the same time hyping Clemson’s potential for this season, with such an inexperienced OL?

I don’t like ’em, but I did win $50 off the ECU Pirates today. I told a big VT fan/buddy on Monday that they would beat VT and he wanted to bet $100 on it, but I got scared and only went $50. I don’t have any finger nails left after watching the game, but I do have an extra $50.

The Coastal isn’t wide open, its GT’s to lose.

  19. phillypacker 08/30/2008 at 8:11 PM #

Regarding my post about the OL readhisrts, I’m watching Daquan Bowers running rough shod in Clemson’s defense against Alabama. I don’t see much difference between his 18-year-old body and those of juniors and seniors. Nor that of Lucas or Maddox at State. If you can play, you can play and our current OL can’t play. I say get the young ones in there just like we are at linebacker. I also say get Brandon Barnes involved. TOB is the man but I’m just saying.

  20. phillypacker 08/30/2008 at 8:13 PM #

I’m guessing the silence regarding my question about finding places on the internet besides packpass to listen to State football radio broadcasts means there aren’t any like WIFM last year. Right?

  21. Dogbreath 08/30/2008 at 8:16 PM #

I’d rather have the fingernails than the 50 spot. Nothing worse than the 3 to 4 days of agony when you’ve bitten too much off the nails.

This is typical Tommy Bowden. He is a pussy, therefore his team is playing like pussies. Until he learns that smashmouth physicality wins dogfights like this, as opposed to cute trickery, Clemson will never be an elite program again. Starting that true freshman at), over the proven commodity preseason All American Davis sends all the wrong vibes to the team. He is a loser coach with top 5 talent.

  22. Wulfpack 08/30/2008 at 8:20 PM #

Interesting point Herbie just made about Tommy Bowden being uptight before the game. I bet Saban wasn’t uptight. There’s a guy that wants to suit ’em up and play. Bowden’s days are numbered.

I will agree with b that I’ll take GT in the coastal. Very unconventional offense.

  23. packville 08/30/2008 at 8:20 PM #

Bad, bad day for the ACC

  24. Dogbreath 08/30/2008 at 8:33 PM #

Comparing Bowden to Stiffdek would be unfair to Stiffdek. Stiffdek never had the chance to underachieve with this type of talent.

  25. redfred2 08/30/2008 at 8:52 PM #

^It’s absolutely true that the “great BB recruiter” himself wasn’t ever able to assemble comparable talent to what Bowden has put together down at Clemson, but I would say that it’s even more “unfair” to use ” “‘s own inability, in ” “‘s defense.
