More on Brown and Howell

WRAL.com/99.9 FM has posted an audio interview with Rivals.com chief recruiting analyst, Jerry Meyer. Some more background and insight on the Pack’s latest two recruits as well as other recruits like John Wall and Derrick Favors.

This guy does not seem optimistic re Favors.

If Howell is truly a “warrior” down low, then we’re going to like him very much.

Meyer repeats these rumors that we discussed last week.

part of the problem with running and gunning is that you have to be better than the other team for it to work. our personnel was not better than a duke or carolina. if you run with a team much more athletic and talented, they are going to whip your a** (kansas over UNC ahahaha my favorite game of the year).

that is why a billy packer or dookie bilas among others always question teams who run against the better teams. how many times have we seen a UNC-A or Pembroke try to run and get stomped (they will get beat either way so who cares)? does anyone agree?

also chop, we sucked at fast breaks. gavin grant really sucked at them. i mean, we were awful on the few breaks we had. the other team could just watch as johnson or grant or fells tripped over there feet and turned the ball over. i don’t expect us to run too much this next year but at least sid will encourage more fast breaks and less half court sets.

i do agree that sid was too rigid and called too many set plays. the players hated it. you could tell, especially the older players. their are likely many coaches who could have done better with what we had. but I remember the Sid who inspired our team in his first season. he’s learning. and if he doesn’t learn, with the players coming in, we’ll have an easier time getting a new one.

you are right packalum44. remember a few years ago when unc was on their way to going 8-20? that duke game where doherty tried to slow down the pace b/c he knew he didn’t have the horses to run with the devils? i think they lost like 55-42 or something like that and tarheel fans were all up in arms about it, thinking the coach was surrendering the game and trying to not lose by 40. but he tried just about the only thing that could’ve worked, although it didn’t.

DraftExpress.com had a little comment on Howell today:

“Richard Howell (#74 Scout, #59 Rivals, #60 ESPN) definitely caught our eye as someone who may be a bit of a sleeper relative to where he’s ranked. He’s a slightly undersized big man with a great frame and excellent strength for a player his age, but he brings a very high skill level to the table on top of that. Howell likes to play facing the basket, where he can put the ball on the floor with a spin move into the paint, or knock down a flat-footed and slow-developing 3-pointer with very nice consistency. He also has good hands and a nice feel for playing inside, and showed off a solid drop-step move inside in addition to a pretty turnaround jump-shot. Howell is just an average athlete and doesn’t seem to play all that much defense at this stage, but he looks like a really nice prospect for Sidney Lowe at N.C. State, especially in that system.”

Sorry to be off-topic, but wasn’t there a story in yesterday’s N&O about the Pack picking up a “huge” OL recruit from SC, but today there’s nothing on it in their archives or on Scout?

Denzelle Good, 6-4, 320 pound OL from Gaffney, SC. The State listed him as one of the top 10 players in South Carolina this year.

    Here is the N&O piece:
    http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/duke/story/1158831.html

He camped at State and did really well and earned a scholarship. I think he’ll end up being a guard. One reason there may not be anything on Scout is that they may not know about him. He is, apparently, not one of the more high-profile recruits.

I’m glad we got him because I do not believe that we will get Xavier Nixon or Travis Bond, the two marquee tackles in North Carolina this year.

He’s ranked a 1 star on scout which means they have not reviewed him, etc.

Don’t forget also that most guys don’t leave Florida, Kansas, or UNC because of the pay cut involved by going to the pros…

packalum – that’s partially true. But we did play up and down w/ Duke didn’t we?

Of course part of the sad truth is that the best way to run is to rebound and get some TOs. In most cases, it’s tough to run after a made basket – with the notable exception of when teams were playing us.

Once again -I go back to the refusal to put Grant at the 4 spot. This means he would have been filling the break rather than running it unless he got a rebound – which of course, he was more likely to do than McCauley or Costner.

It’s really water under the bridge now. I really don’t care if we walk the ball over the court every time if we play hard and are well-prepared. 2008-2009 will give us an even better idea if this is what we can expect w/ this current staff.

“…that is why a billy packer or dookie bilas among others always question teams who run against the better teams.”

Not that I disagree with what you said but I think Coach Billy Packer would be the last person I would take coaching advice from. There are hours and hours of tape that you can watch of Packer saying a team must do this or that and they don’t and win. Packer proved year after year that he is a decent announcer but an absolutely horrible coach.

Just watch the last 8 minutes of the ’83 championship game and listen to all the horrible advice Packer seems to want to give the Pack.

i agree with being cautious about the recruiting news, didn’t we have one of the top classes in the nation the year Inge and Kelley came in… that worked out well…

did anyone read the piece on wolfpacker about lorenzo brown: He knew he was gonna commit in April but wanted to get his other teammates exposure before he committed. Is this guy for real? That’s gotta be one of the most selfless things ive read in a longtime in an era where even news about college sports now is awfully cynical.

Not only are we looking good with Nixon and Bond, but also with the #1 potential recruit next year out of NC, Robert Crisp, a 6’8″ bohemoth who already has us with “High” interest. God willing can you guys believe the OL we could have here in the next 2 years????

Hi Fellas, I just read that Marcus Stone was signed by the Bears listed as a TE. I am psyched he is getting a chance in the NFL. I really hope he “sticks”. He really deserves it.

    From Noah:

“Whoever the coach is, he must consistently make it to the second week of the tournament. Nothing less is acceptable”

I think the key word here is “consistently” … and I agree … But everyone loses in the first weekend sometimes … even Chapel Hole and Dooook (as Dooook did last year)

But going 5 years in a row to the tourny but losing in the first weekend in 4 of those years … yeah, unacceptable … Going every year is wonderful, don’t get me wrong – but, I don’t want to be seeded from 7-10 EVERY year and think that a 2nd weekend appearance is cause for a parade … We eventually need to get past that

Just in case anyone is interested, Engin Atsur’s Turkey team takes on the USA in a pre-Olympic warm-up game at 8am Thursday morning on ESPN2. Hopefully Engin will have about 30 points and the USA will win 150-30.

Various youtube videos of current and future commits. Looks like some potential, though certainly not the ACC in terms of comp. I like how Howell attacks the glass. We sure don’t have enough of that mindset right now.

    Scott Wood:

Mays (#34 in white)and Wood(#15 in white) in the championship game:

Julius Mays on some Tyus Edney vibe to win a playoff game:

Richard Howell and CJ Leslie among others on the AAU tour:

    Lorenzo Brown on the baseline:

I think the BIGGER issue is COMPETING with the Blues down the street. The win vs. UNC two years ago was huge. Winning an ACC Championship is preferable to making it to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. This year may not be the year, but we will need to get back to the point where we can knock off UNC and/or Dook, and win the ACC, then let’s get to the second weekend of the tourney, then the third weekend! I think you’ll see BOTH the 2009 and 2010 classes will end up being STELLAR, and we’ll see some good things in the coming years.

I predict that we will also have to knock off Wake Forest and Clemson. Those two schools are recruiting very well compared to the other ACC schools and were impressive last year.
