John Wall(and Dwon Clifton) to Oklahoma St?

So rumors Clark Francis…

Speaking of Wall and Clifton, the word on the street is that the package will be delivered to Oklahoma State as soon as the “Live Period” for college coaches is over at the end of July when Clifton get the Director of Basketball Operations job with the Cowboys.

I’m sure people have read this article but I found it interesting. It’s on Julius Mays.

    http://www.dukebasketballreport.com/articles/?p=24048

Our views are all speculative at his time but in my opinion he may be an interesting sleeper at the point. Perhaps a pipe dream but you never know.

Goller Jeez, this Mays kid sounds amazing. why don’t we recruit kids like that at NC State…wait a se….

Seriously, a hs coach is always going to shamelessly promote his players, not that there isn’t any truth to it. when is that red-and-white game again? : D

  3. Afterglow 07/25/2008 at 11:07 PM #

Yeah, I totally get that about HS coaches.

It is interesting to point out that when he initially signed, people on this very blog were pretty excited about him. Of course that was before (from our perspective at the time) the wheels came off of the bus. Also, people probably thought that his stock would rise-which it did not. I guess in my current pipe dream I envision an under the radar type kid who unexpectedly blows everyone away. Hey, if you can’t dream, you’re dead.

I’ve never seen Julius Mays play, so I have NO idea what kind of player he will or won’t be.

But those comments about he’s just a winner…those are the exact same quotes I remember reading about King Rice. Well, he’s not the greatest shooter and he’s not the greatest passer and he’s not the best athlete. He’s just a winner.

Lord have mercy, I hope Mays is better than that. And they are doing wonderful things with mood stabilizers these days, so I hope King Rice is taking them religiously.

Rice is the guy who dragged his girlfriend down the street by her hair and as an assistant coach, once went into the stands to fight a guy who was heckling him.

I guess I’ve never seen ANY one of these guys play. I may have stumbled across John Wall and the likes on You Tube videos here and there but those are as misleading as anything as the idea behind them is NOT to show a player at their very worst. Don’t get me wrong, nothing indicates that John Wall and various other highly touted FIVE star recruits are anything but spectacular but-diamonds in the rough happen.

Granted, a player’s FIVE star quota comes from expert analysis that is based on (the experts) own speculation and hype and the performance averages of said player taken from games played in high school and at AAU squads. My guess is that the “experts” weren’t as impressed with Julius Mays at these various venues. While my hope is that Lowe and staff have a good eye for talent, my fear is that they took what they could get at the time. You never know as everything is pure conjecture at this point.

I get that any coach is going to brag about their player but-stats don’t lie:

    • He averaged 21.2 points
    • 5 assists a game (6 over a three year period)
    • He had three turnovers in five games THIS SEASON despite handling the ball much of the time. I don’t know if I’m misreading this but, are they saying three turnovers in the year? That would be amazing if that were the case although I must be misreading that.
    • 90% from the free throw line
    • 3.5 rebounds (unlikely translation at an ACC level of competition)
    • He hit over 45 percent of his three-pointers

One concern and perhaps it’s what separates the wheat from the chafe is his lack of speed.

Who the hell names their child King? Did his parents go to UNC as well? That’s the only explanation I can come up with.

  7. Dr. BadgerPack 07/26/2008 at 12:58 PM #

Parents can do a lot worse than “King”… Wonderful Terrific Monds, God Shamgod, Talula Does the Hula are a few horrible names that come to mind. The latter of those was recently shot down by a New Zealand judge.

Then there’s Prince Fielder, who probably wouldn’t feel too special if he spent some time hanging out with King.

True. I knew a girl named Shanda Leer.

  9. Noah 07/26/2008 at 1:13 PM #

    Coco Crisp…Milton Bradley….

I went to a school with a guy named Chuck Manson. Me…I would have used the middle name.

Now that I think about it, my friends wife had a boss named Dick Coats. And I know someone who has the last name Butts-go wild with that one!

It’s comments like these that makes me thinks Long Wang is going to rear his ugly head again.

  12. Afterglow 07/26/2008 at 1:26 PM #

Ah, for God’s sake! Basketball anyone?

  13. Dr. BadgerPack 07/26/2008 at 1:59 PM #

Then there was the Braves pitcher, Jung Bond… I seem to recall a New York “Bong Lit up by Mets” headline a while ago…

    ^^^That’s freaking hillarious!

I’ll be honest, I don’t really care whether Mayes is that great of an individual BB player or not, and I also don’t care if any one of the players that are currently on the roster jumps up and goes off in a Wolfpack uniform this upcoming season either. What I’d really prefer to see is just some slight evidence that Sidney Lowe and his staff have some grasp of what it takes to lead, and that they are going to teach and ENFORCE certain rules among themselves, as well as the necessity for EVERY player on Sidney Lowe’s roster to at least attempt to play fundamentally sound/T E A M basketball this upcoming season.

This latest version of NC State basketball has been no more reminiscent of the Wolfpack basketball that I remembered, or anything comparable to what I expected from ‘the former’ Sidney Lowe to begin with, then some of ” “‘s worst coaching efforts. I’m waiting to see an IMMEDIATE shift in FOCUS in every aspect, on and off the BB court, and from the very start of this upcoming BB season. If that redirection isn’t earth shaking and VERY apparent from day one, then all bets are off. I’d say clean house and allow even Lee Fowler lead the way in doing this whole damn thing all over again.

Just so you’ll know, I visited the triangle last weekend and needless to say, there has been a slight shift in my viewpoint since then.

  17. Afterglow 07/26/2008 at 3:18 PM #

When you say “slight shift in my viewpoint” is that towards a positive or negative trend?

  18. redfred2 07/26/2008 at 4:00 PM #

I would have thought that my last post up there would indicate a trend that is definitely on the more NEGATIVE side. Maybe I’m not being clear or adequately speaking my mind enough around here. 🙂

I’m going to hold out hope and I’ll just wait and see, but the very first game should give me a good enough indication of just how many return trips I’ll be making back to the RBC this winter.

I don’t live anywhere near there so my vibes may be off but I sense different things in the works. I have no variable means by which to describe it, it’s just a feeling I have that things will turn for the better. Perhaps it’s because we hit rock bottom and I can’t imagine a worse scenario than last year but, for some reason, it feels like we’re going to turn towards a more positive trend.

  20. Mike 07/28/2008 at 12:21 PM #

This thread is probably not being read any more, but I have been away. King Rice dragged his gf by her hair – for awhile King ws dating one of the NCSU Women’s Bball players. She was very attractive and none of us knew what she saw in him.

My question about Dwon Clifton – is this the same jerk that wrote sports for the N&O in the 80’s? If so, what a joke.

“it feels like we’re going to turn towards a more positive trend.”

Lord knows I hope so…team does worse than 4-12 next year and Lowe may not be around to enjoy that 2009 class…
