ACC “Hatred Index”

I first became aware of this via link to the Hole board, but it’s still an interesting time waster for a Holiday weekend (with little expected NC State news). Since we are not a message board, we can’t have elimination-style voting. So, just use the comments to list the other ACC teams in order of dislike (1 being the most hated, 11 being the most liked/tolerated). Personally, I have to split the hatred by sport – I mean, who could possibly hate Duke football?

Football:

1. UNC
2. Boston College
3. Virginia Tech
4. Florida State
5. Miami
6. UVA
7. Maryland
8. Duke
9. GT
10. Clemson
11. Wake

Basketball:

1. Duke
2. UNC
3. UVA
4. Boston College
5. Wake
6. Maryland
7. GT
8. Florida State
9. Miami
10. Clemson
11. VT

With all due respect, I don’t get people who rank hating Duke ahead of UNC-CH in hatred. There are many more Tarhole jerks to have to deal with and Wal-Mart fans.

I don’t do this often, but my blog touched on this very topic awhile back so this link is germane. Check out –

mine works for both fb an bb:

    1. unx
    2. dook
    3. maryland

no other schools even come close!

  3. BJD95 07/03/2008 at 10:26 AM #

Actually, on a percentage basis, Duke has far more Wal-Mart fans. How many rusty pick-up trucks with Duke bumper stickers contain a driver with ANY connection to the university?

I also hate Coach K and grudgingly respect Roy Williams. When Doh was in charge, the hatred was pretty much even.

When Duke and UNC play in hoops, I always cheer for “giant earthquake” – but barring that, I’d rather that UNC win. I pull for either team against UConn (Jim Calhoun is perhaps the world’s biggest asshole). Apart from that, I hope both blues go winless.

    1. UNC
    2. UNC
    3. UNC

Then it’s Boston College. BC is strictly personal; I’ve encountered several alumni who are idiots and liars (one who attempted to get me fired from a position, although because I’m really facking smart I nipped that one 🙂 )

I of course want Duke to lose when we play them, but I otherwise root for them (unless playing Wisconsin of course). This too is strictly personal- the whole I wouldn’t be alive if not for DUMC thing…

  5. wufdog 07/03/2008 at 11:06 AM #

I only hate Carolina and Duke and in that order. I find myself able or willing to acknowledge redeeming qualities in the other ACC teams especially when facing the blues.

  6. WolftownVA81 07/03/2008 at 11:30 AM #

Off topic but I’m suprised there has been no thread on Les Robinson retiring from the Citadel. Can’t we somehow get LF to take his place? Or, what about a trade with IU? I’d love to have Rick Greenspan instead of Lee. Additionally, IU needs a clean program now – no pressure to win. It’s perfect.

  7. graywolf 07/03/2008 at 11:31 AM #

There are two schools that are truly on my HATE list and they are:
    1. Carolina
    2. Duke

I can take or leave the rest of the ACC…

  8. wufdog 07/03/2008 at 11:46 AM #

Just seeking a little validation-is it the obnoxious fandom, cocky players, unyielding media love or just a poor choice of colors at the root of everyone else’s hatred of the blues. For me it is the fans.

  9. lush 07/03/2008 at 11:47 AM #

sport doesnt matter. well…. maryland over duke in football definately

    1. unc
    2. duke
    3. maryland
    4. bc
    5. vt
    6. miami
    7. uva
    8. clemson
    9. gt
    10. wake
    11. fsu

although, it should be noted that i have hated NCSU’s performance in both sports for the past 3 years

  10. Rick 07/03/2008 at 12:33 PM #

    1 UNC
    2 Duke
    3 Maryland

  11. b 07/03/2008 at 12:48 PM #

    1a. UNC
1b. Duke Basketball (why bother hating the football team?)
    2. Md-they ruin our team’s football dreams (however modest) every other year
3.Ga Tech-they alternate ruining dreams with Md
    4.BC
    5.The U
    6.Clemson and their obnoxious fans
    7.Wake
    8.FSU
    9.UVa
10.Va tech-I’d actually pull for them if they aren’t playing State. I’ve long respected the football program.

I’d put ECU #3 on an open list. Did anybody else hear their psycho fan on Mark Packer’s show yesterday? He wanted it noted that IF they beat Va. Tech and WVU in the first two games, they’ll go undefeated and crash the BCS. Thought that might give ya’ll a little chuckle. That’s one of the biggest ifs ever, I bet they get shutout by Va Tech and give up 40 plus points to WVU.

  12. choppack1 07/03/2008 at 1:32 PM #

    Football:

    1. UNC
    2. Wake
    3. Boston College
    4. Maryland
    5. Miami
    6. Duke
    7. UVa
    8. GaTech
    9. FSU
    10. Clemson
    11. VaTech

Naturally, UNC is high. However, lately Wake has been annoying me. I’m a big believer that Wake’s entire football program -from their blocking scheme’s to their PA tactics of playing ear drum shattering sounds while the opposing team huddles up – is based on a theory of being unethical, yet not breaking the rules. One of the dirtiest facemasks ever was when a Deacs DB blatantly tackled the NC State WR (it was Jerricho I believe) who had just gotten a key first down and big gain on a reverse. I also don’t think their fans realize that they are barely eeking by an ACC that is perhaps at its lowest point since the 70s. Do I respect Grobe – of course. He’s a great coach and seems to be a good man, but Wake’s tactics and arrogance have really begun to annoy me.

    Baskeball:
    1. UNC
    2. UVa
    3. Maryland
    4. Wake

My hatred of UVa is a direct result of going to several games in Charlottesville, seeing questionable calls, seeing a cocky team that has no reason to be cocky. Wake was really high on the list when Chris Paul was there. It’s hard to pull against them given their current line-up, but I honestly have to admit, in my heart, I pull against them most games.

Over the years, I’ve really tried to suppress my vitriol for all of my ACC brethren. This usually lasts until the first bad call or cheap shot. It also isn’t easy living in Winston Salem seeing Wake enjoy success while the Pack fumbles along. It’s not their fault they are good – and it’s certainly not their fault we’re bad! But hey, it is what it is.

I actually like Coach K. I find him more genuine that Roy, whom I find a bit phoney. It should be noted that Roy did score points for me when he wore the Jayhawks sticker. Not because it annoyed Kansas fans, but because it made it seem like the man I was led to believe took the UNC job. A good, honest man.

  13. STLPACK 07/03/2008 at 1:32 PM #

    1. UNX
    2. BC
    3. Miami
    4. Wake
    5. Maryland
    6. GT
    7. VPI
    8. UVA
    9. Duke
    10. FSU
    11. Clemson

I’m unlike you guys… don’t mind Duke. I like K and pretty much root for them unless we’re playing them. Same for FSU in football (not so much in b-ball). Gotta dislike Miami and BC though…

  14. treznor 07/03/2008 at 1:44 PM #

    1. UNC
    2. Duke
    3. Miami
    4. Clemson
    5. FSU

It’s pretty close, but numbers 3, 4, and 5 are a direct result of stadium visits. I was in the band during college and was at the Micron PC bowl where we played Miami. I don’t know if the fans were extra pissed off because they were picked to go to a bowl that they didn’t even have to travel to, but we had food/programs/whatever thrown at us for a decent portion of the game. I’ve been to UNC for games a number of times. Was boo’d at often (hey, nothing wrong with that) but never had anything thrown at me.

Clemson and FSU are up there just because the chants at the games are SOOO annoying. Clemson spells there name so many times a game that I’m sure they started it just so they could remember how to spell it. And FSU’s war chant thing? No more needs to be said. Cool if you are a FSU fan I guess, but really friggin’ annoying otherwise.

I was in the “I don’t hate Duke camp” for a while until Paulus came along. Now I hate them again like I did when Laettner and Hurley were there. Love Javy Gonzalez. Can’t wait to see him teach Paulus another lesson this year.

I hate UNC, but at least they can back it up. I guess that actually makes it worse in a lot of ways, but I think Duke may have peaked.

And there’s something about Gary Williams that makes me love to see Maryland lose.

  17. dbo2874 07/03/2008 at 3:20 PM #

i mean i hate unc and all, but i spend more time cursing at and bitching about State than I do any other team, so I wonder how to count that?

  18. john of sparta 07/03/2008 at 6:15 PM #

sittin’ on the dock of the bay, wastin’ time….
    football, you say:
    1.Marilynn (NObody pronounces the D)
    10.Dook (the “u” is silent)
i want to beat UNX, but i don’t hate ’em.
State/Carolina games pay for a lot of stuff.
Maryland is the most hated for three reasons:
    1. they beat us when it counts.
    2. home game attendance is not overwhelming.
    3. just like Boston College: if the Pack prevails,
who will i brag to on Sunday? nobody i know is
a Maryland or BC grad (maybe they’re in the closet).

  19. Defenestrator 07/03/2008 at 6:21 PM #

I will always hate UNC above all other schools. Maryland is a close second in football after their poor sportsmanship in our games in the last 5+ years.

    Football:
    1. UNC
    2. UMD
    3. Duke
    4. Clemson
    5. BC
    6. Miami
    7. Wake
    8. UVA
    9. FSU
    10. GT
    11. VT

    Basketball:
    1. UNC
    2. Duke
    3. UMD
    4. Wake
    5-12. Indifferent

  20. packpigskinfan23 07/03/2008 at 8:32 PM #

    Basketball
    1. UNC
    2. Duke(I will probably start pulling for them again once Paulus is gone though)
    3. UMD
    4. BC
    5. WF
    6. GT
    7. UVA
    8. CU
    9. FSU
    10 MU
    11. VT

    Football
    1. UNC
    2. UMD
    3. BC
    4. Miami
    5. GT
    6. Clemson(I put this in the middle, because I have a love of Clemson… I just really hate their fans. I lived near Clemson for a few years, and really love the place. I just HATE their fans when they travel)
    7. UVA
    8. WF(they are on a streak… if they keep it up, i will probably hate them more, but for now- I respect what they are doing.)
    9. FSU
    10. Duke
    11. VT

I concider VaTech and Clemson a bit of “sister schools” to NCSU. The three schools are very similar. This kind of changes my feelings about them on this list, and how I pull for them. Vick brothers aside, VaTech has had some athletes that I really enjoy pulling for(Washington in BB).

  21. hoop 07/03/2008 at 8:46 PM #

I’ve seen too many unsportsmanlike Maryland football shenanigans not to hate them the most. If I could put them in the top three spots I would. Oh wait, I can! But then you might not count my votes so I’ll stick to one team per entry.

And yes, I still hate Duke football because I have memories of the Spurrier days.

    Football:
    1. Maryland
    2. UNC
    3. Miami
    4. Clemson
    5. Duke
    6. VT
    7. BC
    8. UVa
    9. FSU
    10. GT
    11. WF

  22. agentorange 07/03/2008 at 9:26 PM #

If South Carolina was still in the ACC, they are # 1 by a long shot.
So, the honor goes to, and it’s not close in both sports, the Twerps.

    1. md
    2. wake
    3. unc
    4. duke
    5. va. tech
    6. bc

    9. fsu
    10. ga tech
    11. clemson

  23. redfred2 07/03/2008 at 9:47 PM #

unc pretty much tops all of my lists that take into consideration everything thats available to hate in the universe, but in ACC football a far, far, second would be Va Tech, and then Miami. I have no real dislike for any of the rest of them, and I’ve always liked Clemson football, especially attending games in Death Valley.

  24. PackScout 07/04/2008 at 12:22 PM #
