“Quest for Last” Almost Complete

With Virginia’s 76-74 win over Georgia Tech last night, NC State is just one small step away from claiming the cellar in the ACC, along with the #12 seed in the ACCT. As long as the Wolfpack loses as expected at Wake Forest on Saturday (or Virginia and Boston College each wins 1 of its last 2 games), the quest will be complete. The Pack loses all tiebreakers, having won no games against Virginia, Georgia Tech, or Boston College.

im with noah on that, there needs to be a shake up with the asst coaches. With Towe and Strickland at the front of the line.

Unless you have something meaningful to support your “conclusion”, then this is just meaningless hot air. So what do you have that suggests that the assistants are a problem?

  2. highstick 03/04/2008 at 7:20 PM #

    Per Adventuroo:

“The demise of WP Sports, for those of you in diapers or on “recreational chemicals” during the mid 80’s started with a hatchet job by a maverick author, a “Dan Rather” piece(s) by the N&O and finally the capitulation to the Admin and Faculty (Brother Monteith, whereforth art thou?). After that, it was over. It will take a NEW Chancellor and a NEW AD and a NEW “Faculty Oversight” committee to restore (put Humpty back together again” what was there.”

I’ve got to totally agree with this part. I’m an alum from the 60’s and 70’s and was living out of state at the time the “screwjob” took place, but thanks to some of you guys on here, I did enough independent reading to determine that what Adventuroo is saying is right. What I don’t understand is the “lack of balls” by the BOT to make this happen!

“Memphis and the Boston Celtics use an offense which was solely created by a high school basketball coach. ”

Wasn’t it a JUCO coach? Seems like there was an article about it recently.

    Man, dead fucking last.

    This sucks.

I hate to say it, but I don’t expect the shake-up we all want. I have posted many times Lowe needs to fire some assistants and bring in a solid defensive coach taskmaster and a solid offensive coach, keep one of the assistants for recruiting continuity. I doubt we do much for offseason training, weight training, or other needed changes. I suspect the assistant coaches that like to play golf will do it all summer again this year.

The shake up won’t happen. First of all, Fowler let’s “his coaches coach”, or not, for that matter. Heck, Lee never saw that Amato’s weaknesses were bringing down the program, nor the trend in weaker and weaker recruiting classes. If I took Lee’s position, that means I would never supervise my folks at work to get better, never help them improve on their weaknesses. Lee is a total, incompetent idiot. And Oblinger is not far behind for not realizing that that level of incompentence, even in an ADept, hurts the school far beyond the athletic impact. He doesn’t realize the opportunity he is missing by not demanding excellence. I got no repect for the BOT.

Second, Lowe is not the type to take a bold step like that. Look at his pressers and any other comments he makes. There has never been anything deep or keen insights in his comments. It is always “didn’t play with intensity, effort wasn’t there, didn’t play right….” I just don’t see him as innovative enough to make bold changes. Heck, he has never had to make those types of decisions in any of his previous jobs. Heck, didn’t he hire Quentin. Man, bring in some thinkers, not ex jocks. Hire the best and brightest. We are clearly below the mean regression line in the entire ADept. I would pay to get that job and totally change that place around.

Next year will be another disaster,IMO. There is no way these coaches will all of a sudden become taskmaskers, teach defense and discipline, show our guys how to break a press and attack the basket, or even get away from disrupting the whole flow of an offense to call a play after it takes 15 seconds to get the ball to halfcourt.

In our company, we have a serious leadership development program to train our best guys to lead the company in the future. Guess what, very few of them really change their approaches or natural tendencies to micomanage or not, none all of a sudden become innovative in their thinking (they either have it or they don’t), and most drift back after a few years to what they were. So, I am not optimistice that a brilliant, tough, leadership style coaching staff will emerge.

And,I hope I am totally wrong on all of the above points. However, I will not concede I am wrong about Fowler.

Noah, you are correct. It was a JUCO coach. It was an Sports Illustrated article.

What a bunch of screw jobs NCSU fans are. First we want to fire the head coach, but when that doesn’t look likely to happen, we decide to we need to fire 2 of 3 assistants.

I’m sure Monte Towe is a bad influence on the team. I mean look at what his NCSU squads did. Those squads are so out of character, from the way we’ve played the past 20 years, I’m sure Monte’s pressence is a reminder of how uncharacteristic his time at NCSU was that no one on the team wants to listen to him.

I bet players are like, “Yeah, whatever shorty…you did what…phpptt…who cares that was like so long ago, we don’t do that no more…” I mean we’re not that sort of university in basketball to carry on like we did during Monte’s playing days.

Yup, we better fire Monte. He brings back the past to NCSU, which as we all learned from Montieth, Turner, et. al. is not a good thing.

  8. BillyVest 03/04/2008 at 8:47 PM #

You know the funny thing about folks saying we need to chuck Monte out is that Norm Sloan kept Monte on as an assistant, while at NCSU and throughout his tenure at Florida. If Monte didn’t bring NCSU basketball down, during the late 1970’s, I’m sure we’ll survive him this second go around as an assistant here.

The WRAL special on the Cardiac Pack earlier this evening was great. Anyone who thinks that our tradition and history are irrelevant should watch that. Sidney was very prominent in highlight film, player interviews and current interviews. I have to believe that he learned valuable lessons from V and from that team that will be revealed with experience and hopefully 2009 and 2010 recruiting classes that contain several 5star players(including a 5star point guard and a 5star shooting guard). How our team this year could not be motivated by the 25th anniversary of the legend of 1983 is beyond me. I have never gotten over my anger at our administration for forcing V to resign and then crippling our program with self-imposed sanctions. I also have not bought a News & Observer since they helped oust V. We are still paying for that and the administration remains athletically ignorant. Buyout Fowler, hire Purcell or Cobb and let the new AD decide what needs to be done. I am really rooting for Sid because I know that he bleeds red as much as all die-hard State fans, and I know he is upset and embarassed about his team’s performance this year. Come on Pack, remember what it feels like to finish in the cellar and then vow to never, ever go there again.

Bad finish but the last game shows we are competitive and playing well at the right time. This would make a strong run now that much sweeter. We are going to be playing a much different style next year and some key players are showing up while we still have a chance to do something this year.

OK – this is just a test – my last 2-3 comments have disappeared after-the-fact… trying to see if they’re not getting processed, or if I’m in some way offending the SFN staff. Not sure how I could be doing that, but I guess it’s possible…

Many of you seem like you are already giving us a Loss on saturday. Did any of you see Wake play VT tongiht? They looked awful. We have a shot. Sidney has never lost to Wake.

  13. cowdog 03/04/2008 at 9:37 PM #

BVEST…You just don’t know him…and there are some from the era that do. Hell of a ball player, no question, but….

  14. Sweet jumper 03/04/2008 at 9:45 PM #

I just saw Chris Warren on ESPN (Ole Miss vs. Ark.). Wow, he is Lawson-quick and smart with the ball. I hate we missed on him.

  15. Sweet jumper 03/04/2008 at 9:52 PM #

Everyone wants to throw Towe and Strickland under the bus, but Larry Harris seems untouchable. Harris is supposed to be a great recruiter, but over the last 12 years, we have signed a minimal amount of 5star recruits. He also supposedly works with the big men, but over the last 12 years we have demonstrated consistently weak interior defense and a consistent lack of blocking out and rebounding fundamentals. Can anybody help me understand why he is untouchable?

We made one category in Pat Forde’s season recap for the ACC on ESPN.com:

Bust of the Year: North Carolina State. A team expected to chase Duke and Carolina for the ACC title is now on a seven-game losing streak and struggling to stay out of the ACC basement. The home loss to the Blue Devils Saturday was capped by coach Sidney Lowe’s curious decision not to foul while trailing by a point in the final minute; he let Duke run the shot clock to nothing and the game clock to about five seconds. Even with the rebound, State had no chance to get off a decent shot and blew a 13-point second-half lead.

  17. Rochester 03/04/2008 at 10:06 PM #

Wake is only two games ahead of us and has lost their last four. At 6-9 in conference, they have played themselves off the bubble. At least I don’t see them crawling in at 7-9 unless they make a run in the ACCT. They might be as down as we’ve been lately. This could be an even match.

  18. turfpack 03/04/2008 at 10:29 PM #

I really think we will be better than 4-12 or 5-11 next year.8-8 or 9-7 is a realist record for next year.Last year most of you were calling Sid a genius toward the end of the year.He is not a great coach yet -can he be??-I think so, a year like this truly makes you find out about someones soul-will they as coaches, players accept it or work their asses off to change it- I think the latter is a better bet. This year was a learning experence for coaches and players(and fans).I wouldn’t count out Lowe just yet-I didn’t in 83 and I’m not going to just yet either.Plus this is still a young team talent wise.Just a few thoughts from a old coach”””’

  19. packfan4ever 03/04/2008 at 10:32 PM #

Agree. Only 2 games ahead of us and only played Duke, UNC and Clemson 1 time.

  20. blackdom 03/04/2008 at 10:54 PM #

turfpack…..Thats horsecrap we should have seen the change already …….The players get credit for the effort against dook give me a break sid was clueless at the end of that game when it counted……

  21. turfpack 03/04/2008 at 11:06 PM #

seen the change already?effort against dook? Don’t remeber saying anything about the Duke game”’Talking about the season in general.

  22. blpack 03/04/2008 at 11:45 PM #

I’m interested to see who packs it in first on Saturday. State and Wake are done and the NIT may await both or the weight room may await. We underachieved in huge proportions this season in a weak ACC. The league could be tougher next year and we will still have questions at the guard positions. We can do better next year, but we need a great off season commitment from everyone involved with the team.

  23. werncstate 03/05/2008 at 12:49 AM #

1983 was a very good year. If you did not live it I guess it is hard to recreate. Excellent splicing by wral to put together the 30 minute tribute tonight.

  24. choppack1 03/05/2008 at 8:30 AM #

I think we have a very good chance at Wake. They are collapsing right now.

  25. Rochester 03/05/2008 at 9:03 AM #

Against Va Tech: Jeff Teague 25, rest of Wake 33. If we can keep him from torching us we have a great chance. But we have let a lot of guys light us up this year, so someone needs to step up and defend him or we own last place.
