Capel & Haith Rumors Swirl Around Columbia

We haven’t spent much time talking about the coaching carousel this off-season so we decided to open this entry for our readers to share things that they are seeing and hearing in the marketplace and to link interesting articles, blog posts, and internet ramblings.

Our neighbors to the South – whom we should play every year in basketball as some form of a ‘tradition’ game – seem to be talking most seriously about Oklahoma’s Jeff Capel and Miami’s Frank Haith.

Capel, 33, just completed his second season at Oklahoma after coaching the previous four seasons at Virginia Commonwealth. He emerged a few weeks ago as a candidate at USC, due in part to his ties to the area. Capel grew up in North Carolina, played at Duke and his father is an assistant coach for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats.

You gotta think that Oklahoma is sweating some bullets right now. If for no reason other than perception in the market it can’t be a good sign to lose a coach to the Big Ten and a coach to the bottom of the SEC in a 24 month period.

But, you gotta give programs who know how to proactively manage themselves a lot of credit. OU once challenged Kansas as the gold standard in Big Eight / Big Twelve Basketball. But, Texas refused to sit on the sidelines and went out and hired Rick Barnes to challenge the top of the league.

I remember years ago how a couple of the captains of the HSSS would try to claim Barnes wasn’t a good coach because he couldn’t be OU that often. (Oh, the sadness of the irony). Well…I guess that criticism is gone. OU is now clearly not what they were and their job could turn into a high-risk revolving door and Texas was well positioned to be the benefactor of the turmoil in Norman.

Compare and contrast that with good Ole NC State who watched our rival, UNC-CH, employ FOUR different head basketball coaches in seven years. Talk about an opportunity to catch up!!! Instead, Lee Fowler’s Athletics Department continued to sit on their hands and watch Carolina struggle and then rebound all the while we just continued to run in place.

Coach K can’t be too far from retirement…I can’t wait to see how the Einsteins in West Raleigh are positioned to take advantage of that transition!!

For a little bit of fun related to Frank Haith – you will enjoy this entry from two years ago that discussed how Coach Haith’s interest in the NC State job presented us a ‘floor’ of the ‘worst that we could do’ – which, IMHO, was a fantastic worst case scenario.

You really should read that link; it is quite poignant even two years later and I think that you will enjoy the refresher. Note that the search was about 10 days old at the time and was after Lee Fowler bumbled Rick Barnes and John Calipari’s candidacy. As we highlighted just last week in this home run of an entry, “Coach Fowler” choose to pursue Steve Lavin, John Belein and Lon Kruger during this time frame as opposed to Haith and some of the names that we highlighted in that entry.

At that point, the remaining pool of potential candidates was so negatively tainted that ‘our’ search was screwed and Fowler had nowhere to turn. No coach wanted to be our public ‘6th choice’. I will leave you with a couple of quick highlights from the aforementioned link:

Barring an unknown & unexpected event with some kind of “mystery candidate”, NC State’s coaching search has probably entered a different phase where “Stage B” candidates will need to be properly vetted if they have not already been analyzed by Lee Fowler and team.

Many people have asked, “why aren’t you more devastated by the Rick Barnes & John Calipari situation over the last ten days?” The answer lies in what we think is NC State’s “floor” in this search. In other words, “what is the worst that NC State can do?”.

Barring a God-awful mistake like John Brady (that we honestly do not think that the Wolfpack Club would allow to happen), we think that the “worst” that NC State could do is hire Frank Haith.

Step away from all of your pre-conceived notions for a moment. Think about this and realize that State is in a position that the “WORST” (for lack of a better term”) that we can do in this search is get: a current Atlantic Coast Conference head coach who was the lead assistant in the ACC for successful Wake Forest teams before becoming the lead assistant and top recruiter for Rick Barnes at Texas. By all personal accounts, Haith is an articulate, fiery, tireless worker who has valuable ties in local recruiting networks and is going to be a super coach.

Those records against the ACC coaches are really astonishing. Aside from VT, who do we have a leg up on?

I’m not trying to excuse the stoned on some killa like performances of the coaching staff and players this year but lest we not for get the former ‘leader’ at State left almost nothing to build on. Something like 6 players and none of them would be starters on any top program in the ACC.

I was very pleased with Sid’s performance last year and very disappointed this year. I’m willing to see what happens next year but I wouldn’t expect much from the team until the majority of the Sendekian era players have left.

“I’m willing to see what happens next year but I wouldn’t expect much from the team until the majority of the Sendekian era players have left.”

The majority of this year’s team were players Lowe brought in. 3/4 of next year’s team will be Lowe’s.

Rick – Mebane/packgrad, you are not starting that crap again. If you have nothing useful to add then just do not post.

^I think that is a fair assessment but the other side of the same coin is Sid brought in an A-list big man, and to put it frankly, he didn’t do jack with him in the line up. Additionally, the guards he brought in are not near ACC caliber. So we should be optimisitc because?

The majority of the players on this year’s squad were brought in by Lowe. 3/4 of next year’s squad will have been brought in by Lowe.

Was a pretty good conversation until the HSSS got defensive again … oh well.

Rick – This is the last warning packgrad.

    is this “useful”?

Just fact- I wasn’t trying to be useful. If you have information that can prove my statement false please feel free to correct. I don’t feel you can discuss the current state of State basketball without speaking of the current coaches, players, AD as well as the absolute shambles the program was in when the Lowe came to town 1.5 years ago.

Can someone refresh me about what happened with Barnes??? I remember his brother over in Hickory serving as an “in between” but he frequently said that Barnes was NOT interested. I thought Barnes essentially used us to get a raise. Isn’t that correct? Regardless, he was the coach I wanted. I’ll never forget his resentment against Dean Smith and how he started ripping his suit off when he was down to 4 players one year over there at Chapel Hill. He wouldn’t kiss Dean’s tail…
He still is my dream candidate. Oh how I wish it could happen!!!

“the former ‘leader’ at State left almost nothing to build on. Something like 6 players and none of them would be starters on any top program in the ACC.”

I’ll agree that little was left to build on but none of them would be starters on any top program in the ACC? Brandon Costner, Ben McCauley, Courtney Fells and Gavin Grant definitely could have played somewhere else in the ACC. Granted, it’s hard to put together a formidable basketball program with out a true point guard but those players aren’t such a bad inheritance in my opinion. Whether it was Rick Barnes or any of the other higher tier coaches, I think last year would have still been a struggle-but to say that the four aforementioned players wouldn’t see time on any other team is a little ridiculous. The state of State wasn’t the best thing to walk into and I think a lot of coaches kind of knew that from the start. Leaving either Texas or Memphis would be a hard thing to do knowing what you’re giving up and knowing what you’re walking into. But give credit where credit is due, those players aren’t too shabby.

lets wait till sid is .500 against vt than we can perhaps let him go or better yet wait till he retires!

Another ‘power conference’ job is open as Ben Braun is out at Cal …

    Indiana
    LSU
    California
    South Carolina

(I may already be missing some)

This should get real interesting real quick …

^Other items that may be of interest –

Arkansas State hired John Brady (formerly of LSU) to fill their vacancy … Still can’t believe his name came up during our search

Missouri State picked Purdue assistant Cuonzo Martin (of Matt Painter’s staff) as their head coach … link if interested:
    http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10740083

About the Cal opening, one of our “friends” names has surfaced:
“Names that have already surfaced as possible replacements include TV analyst and former UCLA coach Steve Lavin, former Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings coach Eric Musselman and Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett.”

STEVE LAVIN back in his precious Pac-10 … I’m sure he is stoked about the possibility … http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10740164

Here is a link for current openings or jobs that have recently been filled … I forgot to mention Providence and Oregon State as power conference schools w/ openings in my earlier post:

Also, slightly off topic – but I think this is a totally cool thing for the folks at Davidson to do: http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10740462

    go wildcats!

SFN mods / admins – I made a post in this thread that contains ALL Division 1 head coaching vacancies (and those jobs that have already been filled) – but the post is in the dreaded “awaiting moderation” status 🙁

Anyway, if you see fit to release the post the link it contains may be relevant / convenient 🙂

    Thanks!

    We’re f^$Ked, cupcakes.

Lee is getting awards from the weak and medicore Oblinger, most State Alumni have no idea how bad LF is, and most Alumni are use to losing in most sports for most of the time.

Oh, and we still have Stafford to irritate and alienate our students before they become Alumni, so that when they become Alumni they will not bother to join the AA nor give anything back to the school. Brilliant strategy their, Ob.

Must say I am glad we got thru the 25 year Anniversary this year. Toward the end of all the hoopla, I was truely sick of hearing about it. Probably because of how poorly the year turned out and how clueless our coaches and players were.

It is time to recognize that we are not a BB school and haven’t been one for 20 years. We regularly get beat by BB nonames that have never done anything in the sport.

Primewolf, could me as one who dealt with and was pissed off by Staffard and his department. He is the definition of “empty suit.”

In no coincidence, I am not an Alumni Assoc. member, nor a WPC member. And I doubt I ever will be.

Uh, make that “Count me as one”

    I cn’t speel…

  21. cooldrip 03/27/2008 at 1:05 AM #

I’m pretty sure most coaches would have told Costner to pack his bags; slacking is unacceptable regardless of how talented you may be. Courtney doesn’t have the handle to play in any other ACC backcourt, and he takes too many plays off. Ben is a poor rebounder at the 4/5 spot, and not a great defender either. I love Gavin, but his turnovers could be very costly. None of these guys starts at any other ACC school this past year that was CONTENDING for the title. If they’re not good enough to start for a contender, they’re not good enough for us. That is, if we want to contend, rather than PRETEND we contend.

  22. Rochester 03/27/2008 at 6:49 AM #

^How would those players do if properly coached? I think the results would be much different. To say they couldn’t play at any other ACC school, you’re making the assumption that the coaching staffs at all other ACC schools wouldn’t be any more capable than ours at getting the best out of them. You could almost make the case that all of those players would be better at any other ACC school for this reason.

  23. tcthdi-tgsf-twhwtnc 03/27/2008 at 8:58 AM #

“Brandon Costner, Ben McCauley, Courtney Fells and Gavin Grant definitely could have played somewhere else in the ACC.”

Which of the players would be starting for Duke, Carolina or Clemson? Brandon Costner maybe last year. Most of those guys wouldn’t be starting on just about any team in the ACC much less the top programs.

  24. packbackr04 03/27/2008 at 11:11 AM #

^^and the other guys on our team wouldnt have even gotten a scholarship offer from other ACC schools. our talent level right now is that of a middle of the league A10 team. period.

  25. packbackr04 03/27/2008 at 11:19 AM #

oh and good call by herb/sid to pass up on Stephen Curry. who in the hell could watch that kid play ball and NOT offer him a scholarship. i love the way he plays the game and his shooting touch is undeniable. way to go guys! its kinda like passing on Steve Blake for Shooter Sherril and his gold teeth. taht worked out well for us too. thanks herb
