Doing the Math (The Path to 8 ACC Wins)

Let the people rejoice – State beat the castrated turkeys once again, to get back to .500 in the ACC. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the second half of the conference schedule is even more difficult. NC State will likely only be favored in one game (home vs. FSU). But all is not lost – State may not be the favorite, but can legitimately expect to compete well in 5 other matchups. We break the games down into categories below, with percentage likelihood of victory in parentheses.

Home games against inferior opponents (1)

vs. Florida State (80%)

The Pack played really well (and the Noles really poorly) for 5 minutes at the end of the first half in Tallahassee. Thanks to a banked 3 from Fells and huge plays on both ends of the floor from Hickson in the last minute of play, that was enough. FSU is in the midst of watching another season go down the drain in ACC play, with the NIT looming on the horizon. This is a game that NC State must win, and should do so absent a severe mental letdown.

Road games against inferior opponents (3)

at Boston College (50%), at Virginia (50%), at Wake Forest (50%)

Getting 2 out of 3 here would be huge, and probably necessary. Let me clarify what I mean by inferior – on a neutral court, I would expect NC State to be favored against all 3. Of course, if we play poorly (like we did in the home matchup against Wake), all bets are off. But I like our roster better than each opponent’s, and there are no bad matchups for us (no great outside shooting or multiple, dynamic guards). If Fells can shut down or at least suppress Rice, Singletary, and Teague – then State is better at the other positions. I also expect momentum and motive to work in NC State’s favor – Boston College is in freefall, and Virginia is showing signs of weariness (due to their coach being a raving lunatic in the mold of his asshole mentor, Jim Calhoun). These two also have a somewhat lackluster home-court advantage. BC is worse than their record indicates, and UVA is better (3 of their ACC losses have come in overtime). Wake is more of a wild card, but if everything breaks right, NC State could enter the game at 7-8 and needing a win to punch its dance ticket. I fully expect Wake to be playing for nothing but pride. I also don’t think much of head coach Dino Gaudio.

Very tough matchups, but not hopeless (2)

at Maryland (25%), vs. Clemson (35%)

The upcoming titlt in College Park is just one of those games I have a feeling about. Maryland is notorious for playing to the level of their competition. They do have multiple, good PGs – but neither is an explosive scorer. They don’t shoot well from the outside. The Terp big men are talented – but they also give up alot of fouls. That’s the weak point we can exploit, as long as we aren’t dominated on the glass and don’t go crazy with turnovers. It will be a fun matchup, if for no other reason than Osby. Like Fletch, he’s 6’9″ with the afro. Clemson is a tough matchup for us, with good perimeter shooting, solid rebounding, and smothering defense. They made us look silly in Littlejohn. However, the Tiggers are a different team on the road, and have really struggled of late. The crowd will be up for this one, and I can’t write off a possible upset.

Divine intervention needed (2)

vs. UNC (2%), vs. Duke (1%)

These are nightmare matchups for the Pack, both offensively and defensively. Regardless of location, the two blues would beat the Pack 99 times out of 100. As Duke showed last week, it is capable of undoing 20 minutes of yeoman’s work by the Pack in about 3:20. I listed our odds at 2% for the UNC game, because there is a remote chance that Lawson won’t play, or will be severely limited.

Add up the percentages, and the median number of expected wins over the last 8 ACC games is 2.93. 7-9 is the most likely mathematical result, with 6 wins being slightly more likely than 8. I would be really surprised to see 5-11 or 9-7.

Brando did the exact thing at halftime that drives NC State fans crazy when he broke down the ACC standings. “Other than the two teams here in the Triangle, Clemson seems to be playing the best. Virginia Tech had a tough loss to NC State last night to lead the teams with four losses…”

First of all, NC State is in the Triangle. The Wolfpack may not be in the same lofty air as UNC or Duke, but they are very much a part of this town. Secondly, NC State has a higher RPI than VT (who hasn’t beaten anyone in the RPI Top 50, much less two ranked teams as NC State has) and NC State led from start to finish on their way to a ten point win. But instead of a “good win for NC State” it’s a tough loss for VT. Thanks for the nod, Timmy.

It’s sort of like when you notice that the one black guy in a movie is always the first one to die — you always catch it later. Wolfpack fans pick this up and it pisses us off every single time. But if we say anything, we’re just making it up, or we’re chasing black helicopters, or we’re jealous. Give me a break.

unc/duke make people like Vitale and Packer “important”. they help popularize college basketball, making them as announcers “relevant”. Dicky V says unc/duke is the biggest rivalry in college basketball (or did he say college sports?). there is a reciprocal relationship here. by the way, i used to think (maybe in high school) that unc/nc state was a bigger rivalry, and scoffed at this other notion. i guess with all the alum-by-walmart-clothing association, it is more popular, like redsox/yankees or something.

  3. Ed89 02/06/2008 at 11:16 PM #

    concur..
i think we beat duke at home. unc is a different team w/o lawson…

  4. RAWFS 02/06/2008 at 11:18 PM #

Of college rivalries, it is certainly in the top five, but I wouldn’t put it above Alabama-Auburn in football. You can listen to sportsradio down there and “the game” is liable to come up on any day – and I literally mean any day of the year. Ohio State – Michigan has got to be up there, and if you count smaller schools that don’t have the athletic emphasis, Harvard and Yale have quite the history.

I’m still so upset about the flopfest in Durham that I actually rooted for the tarheels to win this one. This is a personal first for me.

    So naturally the bozos lose.

  6. Ed89 02/06/2008 at 11:23 PM #

k’s record against state didn’t improve until v was fired…his first 10 years or so, he lost more than he won vs. state. the duke/unc rivalry has come about in the same time frame. if we hadn’t been so average/below average in the last 17 years, we’d still be in the mix like we were in the 70’s and 80’s (and definitely prior to that!). i hope sid can bring us back to those days, because i remember when it was duke is puke, wake is fake, but the one we hate is nc state. that means state was their main rivalry…and it still is for most north carolinians….

  7. Ed89 02/06/2008 at 11:26 PM #

i’m with you, beo. duke is puke. also, you’d have to put army/navy football game up there near the top of pure rivalries. of course, it never decides a nat’l championship anymore.

  8. beowolf 02/06/2008 at 11:32 PM #

No, there’s just something unmanly about winning with the flop — of having it so ingrained a part of your game plan. Granted, it wouldn’t work without useful idiots willing to blow the whistle. All things considered, it just reminds me of the kid who “wins” the fight by sobbing uncontrollably about being hit till Mommy comes to his rescue.

For everyone in the Raleigh market, do you think WRAL TV5 will devote the first 15 minutes of their 11 PM news broadcast to the State UNC game like they did tonight for the battle of the blues?

I used to think that this station was exceptional, but after boycotting CBS due to Dan Rather and his senility aided failed attack on president Bush, I quickly realized how lame WRAL is.

Does Krezewski remind anyone else of PeeWee Herman?

  10. JeremyH 02/06/2008 at 11:52 PM #

ok, that’s fine; but I was thinking that we should train our guys how to take a charge/ do a flop too. as it stands it’s an advantage they have in a game where we can’t afford to give them any advantages.

so we’re only 2 game behind UNC for 2nd place, woo hoo. let’s home Virgina holds court Thursday against Clemson, and our take against Maryland is HUGE.

You aren’t right. Check that link for a final ACC standings. If their 192 wins, then each team could have 16 wins in a season. As we know that is impossible.

Here are the 2006 final rankings:
    Duke 14-2
    UNC 12-4
    BC 11-5
    BC State 10-6
    FSU 9-7
    Md 8-8
    Clemson 7-9
    Miami 7-9
    UVa 7-9
    VPI 4-12
    GT 4-12
    WF 3-13

    96 wins and 96 losses

Moved up to #37 in the RPI tonight. Big, big game Saturday night.

  13. JeremyH 02/07/2008 at 12:25 AM #

if there was a stat on rpi / ap poll ranking discrepancy, we would be near the top. Indiana is one spot above us in the rpi, but are ranked 14th in the nation? Oklahoma and Arkansas are both just below us in the rpi, and got 13 and 78 votes, respectively. California is 65 in the rpi and still got 3 votes. it’s like we don’t exist, and damned if that Carolina blowout didn’t have something to do with current perception. we need to blow the doors off to be remotely relevant..maybe this has to do with us burning the media on the pre-season poll..

Jeremyh: The ECU and NO losses are keeping us from being close to the top 25. Wish we could have those games back(along with GT at home).

1st off, don’t be mad the local news featured the Duke-UNC game. What else are they going to show? I have no problem choosing between the Democratic race, a dead body on 5-40, John Edward’s hair piece and The Game. Duke vs. UNC is a big damn deal around here. I’m a State fan (married to a Duke grad) and really don’t care who wins the game. This being said, I still got a little bit excited during the game AND watching/listening to the Dookies and Taheels go after each other. It actually makes me laugh listening to the fans rave about their hatred for each other. My only thoughts are, “Damn. I hate both of you fuckers. I’d pull for the Taliban against either team.” Both teams can’t lose……so I (in person) chose to root for a huge fight that resulted in weeks of suspensions.

Let’s make those suspensions good until the ACC Tournament. My dreams were ruined. Duke played (and shot) their asses off against a very good UNC team. It’s a good thing I don’t bet anymore (-4). Prior to the game I honestly thought UNC would pull away at home and beat Duke by 8-12. WRONG. Coach K played Roy like a piano. K has never shied away from an up-tempo game. All he did was spread UNC out and make UNC chase shooters. Duke has a pile of good shooters. They are especially good when left wide open. Duke put the ball in the basket. Duke won the game fairly easily and will be favored to sweep the season series in March (in Cameron).

Call me dumb, but I still think a healthy UNC is 8-12 points better than Duke with Lawson. I’d like to think basketball fans know and appreciate what a solid point guard means to a team. Greg Paulus is no Steve Nash, but he’s solid. Quentin Thomas flat out sucks. He hasn’t reached the Javi Gonzalez level, but it’s close. It hurts to say this, but Greg Paulus is good and a winner. He is a dirty player. He talks shit reserved for guys on the And-1 Tour. His flops rival the likes of Shane Battier (I’m serious). Don’t worry Duke fans…Greg Paulus is safe. Come get me if Christian Laettner REALLY screws up.

Finally, it’s on to the North Carolina State Wolfpack. My boys have made me create profane words this year. My wife recently told me that I cannot use my game language outside of the house. Costner and Javi have come deathly close to breaking me. I am amazed to be 4-4 in the conference and think Sidney had his hands filled earlier in the year. It’s time to go with the the guys that want to play as a team and work (BEN, Gavin, Fells, Hickson, Javi, Horner, Smith, Fergie) and bail on selfishness. It’s pretty obvious Costner is a selfish, cancer to the team. I’d love to see Bobby Knight climb in his shit…..it might not work.

    RAWFS,
who cares about what Tim Brando says. Tough loss……tough win…….it’s all the same to Timmy (Mister SEC FB). It’s all about getting the scores right and getting a check. If you’re scoring at home, the check proceeds the scores.

“I’m still so upset about the flopfest in Durham that I actually rooted for the tarheels to win this one. This is a personal first for me. ”

I had fully planned on rooting for UNC for the first time in my life but when they kep focusing in on Green doing his gay bunny hop dance I found I could not do it. His homo-antics brought me to my senses.

“Was that Mr. Bowles, the President of the ENTIRE UNC FREAKING SYSTEM behind Carolina’s bench rooting for his Heels?

    Why yes, it was.”

Not only was he rooting for them, but he was yelling at the refs when they called a key foul on the Heels. I’m sorry, I just don’t trust Erskine to look out for NC State’s better interest. I trust it about as much as I trust Swoff’s…

  21. boonami 02/07/2008 at 9:07 AM #

    ^
What is that “dance” Green does??? that is about the most lamo thing i’ve ever seen but then again the holes bench always does some kind of gay dance; ever since Coach Gut aka Gramps was coach. I do agree that Costner is the new Josh McRoberts.. plays under his ability and has a crap attitude. Look how much better Duke plays as team without McRoberts.

Is it just me, or is the road in the ACC not what it used to be? Instead of sweaty bandboxes a la Carmichael, Reynolds, and Cole Field House, we have climate controlled megaplexes with luxury boxes full of folks politely clapping (or, even worse, cheering for the other team) as they sip their wine. The RBC Center if one of the easiest arenas in the conference to win in if you aren’t a team called FSU, Miami, or (until this year) Georgia Tech. I’m sure our team feels the same way about going to Md. or BC. (we’ve won in both places in the last three years, haven’t we?)

Heck yes we can win at BC, Maryland, Virginia, and Wake Forest. No, we won’t win all four, but I don’t think going 3-1 will be a harbinger of the end of the world (though 2-2 is a more reasonable expectation).

  23. Trout 02/07/2008 at 9:34 AM #

Positioning ourself for the ACCT is key as well, as we may very well need a ACCT win or 2 to get in.

Obviously, a top 4 seed means a bye Thursday.

But its also important to fininish no worse than 6th.

5th place gets you the #12 team on Thursday, and slots you against the #4 team on Friday.

6th place gets you the #11 team on Thursday, and slots you against the #3 team on Friday.

I think we can beat anyone in the ACCT not named Duke or UNC. Duke and UNC are going to finish #1 and #2, so we need to avoid them early.

We want to avoid finishing 8/9 or 7/10

  24. beowolf 02/07/2008 at 9:37 AM #

I had fully planned on rooting for UNC for the first time in my life but when they kep focusing in on Green doing his gay bunny hop dance I found I could not do it. His homo-antics brought me to my senses.

Thing is, UNC is 0-1 when I root for them. I wish I could somehow strategically root for them, but the basketball gods, like Linus’ Great Pumpkin, know when you’re being insincere.
