Sporting News/850 Blog: You Stay Classy, UNC Fans

The UNC loss was obviously a huge surprise given how poorly Maryland has played this season. But perhaps more surprising was the reaction of their fans, which has been well documented over the weekend. This morning, however, we were sent a new-to-us video featuring audio of the fans yelling at the Terps after Hansbrough bricked the would-be game winner.

Listen for the rich girl yelling, “Go back to the ghetto!”: I’ll let you make your own judgments with regards to how offensive (and possibly racist) this slur is, although I’m fairly certain she meant it in the most hateful way possible.

Hat tip also to 850 the Buzz, which blogged on the topic this morning. Both local and national media looking at the underbelly of UNC athletics today!

Not to jack the thread, but it nice to see positive NC State related press (SFN, feel free to move or delete)-

“The Final Four is great and all, but for sheer excitement, last-second baskets and cuticle-devouring upsets, you can’t beat the wall-to-wall, daylong drama at a sub-regional. Experience this one at the home court of North Carolina State.”

I was waiting for my son at the Cary Amtrak station, so we could go to the game, and listening to the post game comments. I actually thought that ROY and GARY showed great class. Gary talked about Dean’s knee replacement and how Dean had a program that he (Gary) envied and that Dean had been an inspiration. Roy took the blame…and also made some comments. I WILL admit making a joke about Sidney making the same comment after the UNX and Klemsum fiasco…also followed by a comment about handing him a sword if he needed to fall down….

    BUT THAT WAS IN JEST>>>>

I DO remember one of HWSNBSOA’s teams beating Maryland in the ACC Tourney in Charlotte and having an obnoxious MD fan jumping up in front of me all the time. I politely put my hands firmly on his shoulders and “sort of” held him down and whispered that he was disturbing our enjoyment of the game and that his language was inappropriate for my young nephew. He SHUT UP and finally sought seats elsewhere..I still get ribbed about that by my family.

SO…every fan base has it dreges…

ROY and GARY were classy…and it will be an INTERESTING game for UNX and Miami on the 23rd…MD & UNX do NOT have a Rematch this season…

I must remember to TIVO the UNX-Miami game…Will be interesting to see how BOTH react. Maybe Psycho T (How can you, Roy, in a straight face complain about someone with PSYCHO as a nickname getting “picked on”?) will erupt…

As to the “ghetto” comment, perhaps the young lady was an Elvis fan, whose Boomer Mother (probably a HC SUPPORTER) listened to Elvis during her pregnancy to improve the “mind” of her child. Obviously the influnce of BLUE on her mind resulted in some disconnects in the Elvis lyrics…I know…this wasn’t as humorous as I thought…Somebody tell Kev (Leno’s band leader) to bail me out…

    GO PACK…

I missed Sid’s radio show tonight. Anyone who did listen, please post any important points that were discussed. Thanksin advance.

A lil off topic, but we should give some love to Nate McMillan and the unbelievable job he is doing in Portland! I hope there is a blog in the near future for us to discuss one of our former players to be proud of.

I’d like to first of all say that I enjoy reading this blog regularly. It’s certainly the most entertaining and probably well kept fan blog in the ACC.
I’ve decided to throw my perspective in as a Carolina student. First of all, I agree with the sentiment that UNC fans crying after our loss was indeed ridiculous. After all, it is only a game. It is no more ridiculous, however, than some comments I have read on this blog which assert that a loss to Carolina “ruins” an entire week. I would suggest that if this is really the case then we should really reflect on whether we are really being grateful for many of our blessings.

As far as the “ghetto” comment made by a UNC fan I’d like to say that it’s absurd to make sweeping generalizations about an entire fan base because of one comment. Clearly every school has their share of jerks. After losing the football game in Carter Finley stadium this year, my girlfriend and I were walking out of the stadium when we saw a male state fan holding up a football, taunting a larger girl in a Carolina sweater with a football. He said something along the lines of, “Fat $%#@#, I know you want to eat this football, but you can’t because its mine, and the Wendy’s is that way.” The girl burst into tears. This behavior by one drunken state fan is certainly not indicative of all state fans.

In conclusion, having been in attendance at the basketball game in the student section myself, I saw no one crying. There was not, contrary to popular belief, a pandemic of Carolina fans crying their way out of the Dean Dome. Similar to my opinion regarding the ghetto comment, it was the actions of a few individuals and should not be held as characteristic of an entire fan base.

Ok…now I’m ready for the barrage of “Tarhole” comments.

“this sort of behavior clearly reflects poorly upon their entire fan base.

No, it doesn’t. I heard one female voice say it, and there’s no way of proving income by the sound of her voice.

I hate Carolina with the fires of a thousand hells, but don’t we remember Barry Slanders damning our entire fan base because of one overhead crowd comment? Let’s not do the same.”

Agreed. But let’s also point out that UNC fans are NO BETTER or worse than any other fans when it comes to CLASS, which seems a media conception.

  7. waxhaw 01/22/2008 at 7:16 AM #

    ^ That’s the entire point.

Here’s the short list of things they act like never happen at UNC-CH:

Idiot fans making the entire fanbase look bad.

    Recruiting Florida.

    Recruiting Juco’s

Mack Brown changed the terminology of a partial qualifier so the blue bloods wouldn’t get upse

    Coach committing a minor violation.

They are so high and mighty and yet they aren’t better than anyone else. It’s fun to see the crap publicly fall on them occasionally because it’s rare that they get caught and even rarer that a journalist has the balls to call them on it.

BE WARNED ….. 24 hours to full spin control. We should have a team meeting to tell our guys to be extra careful because the makeup columns are coming. It would not be a good time to screw up.

“I didn’t hear anyone at RBC make any comments about the Miami players. Maybe adchappe is another baby blue plant cause he is saying the same thing at the Sportsforum at Scout.com.”

GCPack…I’m an NC State Alumni(class of ’04) and LTR holder. I bleed very red. I just call it like it is. After the Miami game, I heard (and read) many comments about McClinton’s family and how “ghetto” or “thuggish” that the Miami team looked.

Every fan base has their “low class” members who say things like that. It’s not just UNC,ECU or NC State for that matter…its everyone.

I was wrong in my Barry Slanders prediction. He decided instead to go with the follow-up column about angry e-mail he received … over his Barry Manilow column.

  10. Redblogger 01/22/2008 at 9:52 AM #

Angry e-mails and Barry Manilow, now that’s hard hitting journalism at its best, I smell a Pulitzer for ole Barry

  11. burnbarn 01/22/2008 at 10:01 AM #

^ Completely off topic, but can you believe the Sunday Manilow show at the RBC was cancelled due to weather?

We have gone over board on this ‘icy’ weather and our reactions to it. NCSU delayed classes last week until 10 due to potential ice..the announcement was made the evening before. And of course, there was no ice.

  12. PackerInRussia 01/22/2008 at 3:49 PM #

if someone could take that sanctimonious UNC commercial about the old well and crisp October nights and insert the audio of the girl yelling out “go back to the ghetto” right after the line “our love for this place is based on the fact that it is, as it was meant to be, the University of the people”, that would be pretty cool.

New UNC motto: Keeping Chapel Hill livable one ghetto dweller at a time.

  13. redfred2 01/22/2008 at 6:43 PM #

The facts are that at every game, every loss, during some wins, probably after every call by the officials, at least one somebody says something foolish. And, I wouldn’t presume to call them idiotic, or low class, because in their excitement they allowed their emotions overule their common sense, at a freaking BALLGAME.

That’s just me though. There are apparently folks in the media, say Barry Sanders and the like, who love to pass judgement on how low some fan bases are, and how the others walk on water.

Hang on, it’s that just another part of making your venue difficult to play in? Isn’t that apart of home court advantage? I thought we took pride in how obnoxious our fans get. Who and where was it when the fans were chanting “STD” during foul shots. I guess I am a bigger fan of random than offensive material though. I dunno, but I’ll leave you with the immoral words of Julius Hodge on this matter:

When asked whether Duke’s Cameron Crazies got to him in a January 15, 2004, loss at Cameron Indoor:

“There’s no way I could let a guy with a 4.5 GPA, acne and bad breath decide the way I’m going to play on the court. Everywhere I go I get that, so that didn’t make a difference.”

Being at the Miami game in the nose bleed seats, I couldn’t hear if there were crude comments made. However, I heard the boos very clearly when the opponents came on the floor. I’m not sure why fans feel it’s necessary to boo the other guys as opposed to cheering on the home team. This has always seemed classless to me and it happens at every game I go to weather in Raleigh or elsewhere in the ACC. While I’m on my own pet peeves, it really irritates me to hear the National Anthem bastardized to emphasize whatever fits into a particular school’s or teams sports motto. Is it too much to show a little respect to our Nation and vetrans? Don’t we have enough other opportunities to cheer during the game (although our lame cheers are a whole nother topic.) OK…. off soap box now.

“Born and Not Bred Very Well in Chapel Hill”!

I had trouble with that one since the raped football players kept coming to mind….!
