Sporting News/850 Blog: You Stay Classy, UNC Fans

The UNC loss was obviously a huge surprise given how poorly Maryland has played this season. But perhaps more surprising was the reaction of their fans, which has been well documented over the weekend. This morning, however, we were sent a new-to-us video featuring audio of the fans yelling at the Terps after Hansbrough bricked the would-be game winner.

Listen for the rich girl yelling, “Go back to the ghetto!”: I’ll let you make your own judgments with regards to how offensive (and possibly racist) this slur is, although I’m fairly certain she meant it in the most hateful way possible.

Hat tip also to 850 the Buzz, which blogged on the topic this morning. Both local and national media looking at the underbelly of UNC athletics today!

What I find funny about the UNC v. Maryland game is how so little attention is paid to the booing at the end of the first half. I’ve heard a couple of different explanations about the fans boing either Gary Williams or Vasquez (sp?) for “badgering” the refs as they were heading to the locker room, but there’s no reason to boo anyone, when you’re team’s 18-0 heading into a game in January, in my opinion.

Nothing wrong with trying to get the refs to call the game evenly, in my opinion.

On side note to fans, I was watching the Duke-Clemson game and the announcers mentioned several times how Duke players got away with a grabbing at the opposing players jersey, for example; basically some touch fouls weren’t called against Duke, who committed them on a regular basis.

I’ve been saying it for years (especially the 10 years I lived in Chapel Hill), that the majority of UNC fans are just a bunch of preppy little girls that love to think they are real fans because they buy the merchandise–which is pretty much why they lead the nation in merchandise sells every year, because UNC has girl colors. I mean, check out the ratio between guys to girls when the video scans the student section. And when I say the majority, im talking At LEAST 65 to 75%.

After the game, Roy mentioned that he had done a poor job of coaching his team the last couple of weeks. No mention of Maryland’s strong performance whatsoever.

    Classy.

If we said their students were chanting “Go back to the ghetto.” – Would anybody other than Wake fans be stupid enough to believe it?

I would love to see what the baby blue blogs are saying about their so called monopoly on class now in the college world and what their response is this
    Sporting News piece.

Anyone know what the best blog for the
    University of No Class is?

this sort of behavior clearly reflects poorly upon their entire fan base.

No, it doesn’t. I heard one female voice say it, and there’s no way of proving income by the sound of her voice.

I hate Carolina with the fires of a thousand hells, but don’t we remember Barry Slanders damning our entire fan base because of one overhead crowd comment? Let’s not do the same.

No, no it’s all a misunderstanding! She wants someone in the ghetto because she has a dream to help those people! She wants to use her political science degree to raise awareness of the plight of those ghetto bound! She only wants to help and it requires a ghetto!

Please people. You can put crap in a silk stocking but it will eventually stink.

Good thing the media wasn’t reading all the comments that we were making about Miami’s players the other night…

It sure would be hypocritical for us to jump all over the Heels fans for calling another team ghetto.

C’mon, give her a break: those were just the tears talking.

    @ #44 17 24 –
That’s pretty funny and a good theory! There’s something about that powder blue that just doesn’t seem right for team colors. I think the inside of the Dean Dome feels more like a nursery than a place to play basketball. In fact, I think I’ll start calling it, “The Nursery.” Anybody want to join me?

    New Carolina Fight Song

    People, don’t you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
    and look the other way

    Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
    In the ghetto

I’ll admit, I’ve said some really mean things to Maryland fans. But I’ve always figured it wasn’t anything they didn’t already say to each other.

  13. whitefang 01/21/2008 at 1:50 PM #

As far as the stupid comment all fan bases make them. We are no exception.
BUT the crying. I have a recent UNC grad who works for me and we both had a good laugh over that.
If you are old enough to be be in college and you are going to cry after your team loses a game, you need a life. Now if you were actually PLAYING in the game rather than watching it, and it was a championship game then MAYBE. Otherwise go back to your room and get a beer.

  14. beowolf 01/21/2008 at 1:55 PM #

If memory serves, Maryland players did the “Suck It” dance to UNC fans following their win in the ACC Tournament a few years back.

  15. Brinson 01/21/2008 at 1:58 PM #

Let’s not forget to give a shoutout to the original link now.

But to the hypocritical question, I say f*** Carolina. And Danny Green’s stupid dance.

  16. gcpack 01/21/2008 at 1:58 PM #

I didn’t hear anyone at RBC make any comments about the Miami players. Maybe adchappe is another baby blue plant cause he is saying the same thing at the Sportsforum at Scout.com.

By the way at the sportsforum at Scout.com one blogger has come up with another nickname for the UNC fans.

    “KKKarolina”

Also I had a former neighbor who tended to run his mouth about all that was UNC. A few years ago he and I were talking and I asked who he thought UNC would hire to replace Dean Smith when he retired. This was on the heels of the Phil Ford DUI coming out party that the media avoided reporting on for many years.

I suggested to him that Ford or Eddie Fogler would probably be two of the primary candidates to get consideration for the job so who did he think would get it.

He said that Carolina would never hire a black (Ford) or a Jew(Fogler) to coach their basketball team.

I was stunned when I heard him say that. Neither one of those factors had even occurred to me when I asked the question. All I thought about was who was closest to the UNC program with coaching experience, not what race or religion they were.

Quite hypocritical considering all the progressive, “we are loaded with class”, P.R. that the public is fed from Orange County along with their able and willing agents, the News & Observer, Charlotte Observer, etc.

As a State fan with an Obama bumper sticker, I can take double pleasure in seeing this all over the media today. NOTE: good-humored, inoffensive quasi-political post, please don’t take this thread too far down the political rabbit hole!

And substantively, I do agree with beo – not really fair to generalize based on one mouthy idiot.

Not fair maybe – but it sure is fun!

  18. LRM 01/21/2008 at 2:01 PM #

A State fan with an Obama bumper sticker??

    (Sorry…couldn’t resist, man).

“I hate Carolina with the fires of a thousand hells, but don’t we remember Barry Slanders damning our entire fan base because of one overhead crowd comment? Let’s not do the same.”

And I am sure we will see him write a similar article about this UNC incident (especially since this incident has actual proof).

  20. BillyVest 01/21/2008 at 2:12 PM #

Please people. You can put crap in a silk stocking but it will eventually stink.

Not if you quickly stick in a freezer at about 1 or 2 degrees Kelvin.

  21. BJD95 01/21/2008 at 2:12 PM #

LRM – one of my closest work friends is a conservative GOP lobbyist and UNC fan. I’m just a strange guy!

  22. BJD95 01/21/2008 at 2:14 PM #

BV – there’s no such thing as “degrees Kelvin” – old engineering school pet peeve. Since it’s not a relative measure like farenheit or celsius, you don’t use “degree” at all.

I am sure we will see [Barry Slanders] write a similar article about this UNC incident

We’ll see. According to the N&O, his articles run on Tuesdays and Fridays.

As I see it, this “story” pulls him in opposite directions. He is not going to want to write critically of anything Carolina-related, but he does like to blow any imaginably “racist” sports-fan comment way the hell out of proportion.

My prediction: He will attempt to square the circle. He WILL write about the “ghetto” comment, but he will spend more time reminding viewers of crowd comments at NC State and damning the “racist” state of North Carolina in general (i.e., it was the culture that made the innocent UNC girl sound racist). And if his luck holds, he’ll write a follow-up column about all the hateful e-mail comments he supposedly got.

  24. RAWFS 01/21/2008 at 2:35 PM #

I think you’ve predicted it perfectly, Beo.

  25. BillyVest 01/21/2008 at 2:44 PM #

I know Kelvin’s are an absolute scale, but I’ve always used “degrees Kelvin”, going back to chemistry classes.

Been awhile, since I’ve dealt with them though, so I guess my nominclature isn’t perfect.
