State Rides Hickson to 74-62 win

Larry Hunter‘s return to Raleigh was SIGNIFICANTLY closer than the score indicates.

JJ Hickson shot 10 of 11 from the floor en route to scoring 33 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and blocking 3 shots to lead NC State to a come from behind victory over another directional school in the state of North Carolina. Additionally – Brandon Costner played much better than he has recently; Javi Gonzalez might as well be invisible and was overshadowed by the defensive and play making efforts of Marques Johnson. FWIW, Johnson played 23 minutes and Gonzalez logged 17.

The Pack never led in the first half and trailed by nine points at the half. State started with lethargy that fat bastard would appreciate as the Pack turned the ball over on our first five possessions and did not attempt a shot until more than three and a half minutes had elapsed. WCU shot an astonishing 7 of 10 from the three point line in the first half (and was 5 of 5 before finally missing).

Stat of the Game – Western Carolina scored 15 points on NC State turnovers in the first half; the Catamounts scored no points off of Wolfpack turnovers in the second half.

The N&O’s ACCNow Blog deserves some major kudos for already posting a game summary that can be seen by clicking here. There is no reason for us to re-hash the blow by blow. They followed their first entry up with a second entry shortly after the game. Thanks, guys!

State scored 19 of the first 23 points of the second half and Hickson was unstoppable in the final 20 minutes. When he didn’t score from the floor, he was fouled and converted from the free-throw line, hitting 13 of 16.

It is worth nothing charger17’s observation in our comments section:

I watched the second half on ACC Select. They extended their zone way out and we had some trouble passing around it. When we don’t use McCauley at the high post position against a zone we make long, predictable passes. We need to be passing in and back out–that causes them to have to guard very quick ball movement.

The first half was so scary that we broke into a ‘live update’ mode with our posts and with our comments. You can read it for yourself.

3:45 Update – The lead is down to 3, but only because Western is really cold. We are still playing like crap and generally half-assed.

3:53 Update – Horner bricks a 1-and-1, and we still haven’t led all game. 45-44 at the second media timeout. If Western starts hitting again, we’re sunk.

3:58 Update – A little sigh of relief? 51-45 State after 2 Hickson FTs.

4:00 Update – Western buries a 3. They are killing us on out of bounds plays – a problem area since Sendek’s days that has not gone away.

4:09 Update – Tie game.

4:11 Update – MJ forces a 5-second call, then makes long outlet pass for Hickson dunk (after Fells block). 58-55.

4:15 Update – Under 4 left, State still up 3 with Western on FT line. Nobody is scoring but Hickson, and Western is hot again. Doesn’t look good.

4:20 Update – 5 point lead, Fells to the line. Brick. Swish. Pack by 6.

4:21 Update – Pack inexcusably gives up 2 offensive rebounds, but gets ball back with 2:20 left. Hickson fouled again.

4:23 Update – Lead up to 8. Hickson has 31.

4:25 Update – Hickson has new career high. Has scored 33 of State’s 72 points.

Final Score – NC State 74, Western Carolina 62. 33 and 13 for Hickson, and the Pack survives.

Throw on your blinders for the first 10 minutes of the game and this wasn’t a bad game. I did a quick run down of how many points were scored/allowed with each of our 2 point guards in the game.

    Name -Points scored-Points allowed-
    Javi – 2-8
    Johnson – 12-11
    Javi – 10-13
    Johnson – 8-9
    Javi – 8-2
    Johnson – 9-2
    Javi – 6-8
    Johnson – 19-9

    Overall:
    Javi:
    +Points: 2,10,8,6 = 26
    -Points: 8,13,2,8 = 31
    -5 points with javi in.
    Johnson:
    +Points: 12,8,9,19 = 48
    -Points: 11,9,2,9 = 31
    +17 with Johnson in.

Take out the last 2 minutes of the game when Hickson(Aka monster) was shooting free throws and with Johnson on the floor we outscored them by 11 for the entire night, and for the most part, we outscored them or only allowed them to outscore us by one when he was out there.

If you give Javi the benefit of the doubt and ignore the first 3 minutes of the game, his point differential breaks even at 0. I think we have our starting PG for the next few games in Johnson, he actually contributed out there with ASSISTS! He also seemed to be a pretty good defender from what I could tell over the radio.

    Good quotes from the game.

““Our only message was to defend, and if you don’t defend, you are going to come out of the game. It was real simple. I wasn’t even worried about offense.”” – Lowe in the 2nd half. I like to hear that, bench them if they aren’t going to defend.

“Hickson also made the most of his opportunities. A day after being forced to stay after practice to work on his poor free-throw shooting, Hickson made 13 of his 16 shots from the line.” – Sid knew that WCU was going to foul him alot, and made him polish up his FT shot. Good move.

    “On taking on NC State:
“I have tremendously fond memories of my four years here. I’m
privileged to have been a part of this storied program, as well as the ACC. The Wolfpack family has done nothing but open their arms to my wife and myself. This place has a great tradition.”” – Larry Hunter. What a class guy. I hope only the best for him and his pesky catamounts.

Just wondering, but what is it that triggers comment moderation? I just got my 3rd one there, whoops.

Trip could you do that same math for the Cincinnati game also?

  5. Trip 12/29/2007 at 11:10 PM #

I feel like I’m posting back to back, but here’s another stat that shows that we are improving, while still maintaining the name “Cardiac pack.”

20 assists on 21 field goals. I don’t think in a game yet have we managed that many assists, let alone have an assist on every field goal we made except for one. If we continue to win out we could sneak our way back into the top 25 just in time to get knocked out by Carolina as Miami fell today along with a couple of other top 25 upsets.

  6. Packster 12/29/2007 at 11:27 PM #

Well….I made it to the game…and although I needed regular oxygen from where I sat, this is what I saw.

I think it is unfair to say that we didn’t play good defense in the 1st half. We left #1 (Giles?) open at first and he started draining everything. Really the whole WC team was shooting unbelievably in the 1st half. On every missed shot and every loose ball the ball would bounce right back to WC. We started applying a lot more defensive pressure toward the end of the first half but those guys were just shooting lights out making shots with guys all over them. Even though we were behind 9 at the half I still felt very confident as i didn’t think there was any way they could keep that pace up.

The 2nd half proved me right. WC’s % went way down. We started feeding to Hickson since that was what was available. He was using and abusing them. In the end, we just flat wore them out. They couldn’t hang with our physical toughness. Again….and I keep going back to this…a win is a win. We had to have been tired today with only 1 day or rest and most of that being on a plane. I keep hearing comments toward the fact that we aren’t that good but replace the 2 bad losses where this team was trying to find its identity and we are 11-1 with the 1 loss being at MSU and on the road. This is only coach Lowe’s 2nd year and he doesn’t even have a proven point guard. Are there bumps along the way? Yes. But as a general rule I think we are looking pretty good. We step it up against better competition and that will happen when we play UNX. GO PACK!

  7. Trip 12/29/2007 at 11:30 PM #

    Package,
Seton hall you mean? It’s hard to figure it out to that game because I can’t find an exact play by play recap of that game with substitutions, ESPN’s play-by-play pretty much only tells you when someone scores and rebounds and since our 2 PG’s are not scoring/rebounding a lot I can’t tell for sure when they enter/leave the game. I’m gonna watch the game sometime since I’ve only heard it on the radio and I’ll make note of when javi/MJ are swapped and figure it out later. I’m willing to bet that MJ has around +3 and Javi has around -3 though.

What amazes me about this Wolfpack team is how we can come out with absolutely no intensity on Defense and let the opponent have their way for most of the game. Then, like a lightswitch, we play some defense in the last 10-15 minutes.

I am still baffled by the way we attack a zone defense. All that perimeter passing with no movement to speak of in and through the zone is not a pretty thing to watch.

Hunters team seemed much better prepared adn their defense was much better than ours for most of the game. If their shooting hadn’t cooled off dramatically in the second half, it would have been another ECU game.

Our guys were generally slow to the ball, similar to Seton Hall. Their guards could generally penetrate at will whereas outs didn’t even score.

Man, I hope I am wrong, but I see us struggling in the ACC big time. Our offense gets bogged down by just about anybody playing a zone and we struggle to score 65-70 points. I don’t knonw how that will translate against ACC comp.

Maybe our slow play will put the other guys to sleep.

My guess is we win 4 ACC home games and 3 to 4 on the road. I think it will take 9 ACC wins for us to have any chance of getting into the dance.

My first time posting. Tried to go to the WCU game today with the kids, but couldn’t get 3 tickets. Just wondering from those who went whether the seats were actually full? This is the first game at the RBC center that I’ve been to and not been able to get tickets from the scalpers.

Had to listen on the radio. I’m still optimistic about the season, but hate to see games like this one (at least the first half). MJ does appear to be working out as the best point guard, and I think his height helps on rebounding and D. I’m hoping all of these close games will pay off down the stretch.

    nice PG info trip.

  11. Dr. BadgerPack 12/30/2007 at 7:23 AM #

I don’t think anyone explicitly pointed out (sweet jumper had it in the stat line) that Johnson pulled down 5 boards, tied for second on the team for the game. If he can consistently pull down 4-5/game, that will help immensely with one of our major problems from the first third of the season.

  12. Dr. BadgerPack 12/30/2007 at 7:24 AM #

Note, I didn’t see the game– i was in the air at the time (charlotte to gainesville… wonderfull puddle jumper flight), so if they were garbage rebounds, please let me know!

  13. wolfonthehill 12/30/2007 at 7:33 AM #

Against teams like this, no possession should pass without JJ touching it down low. The SHU game was closely ONLY because we basically ignored our offensive advantage for the first 30 minutes.

Sid, this is not a hard one to coach.

    Dump it to JJ.
    Repeat ad nauseum…

  14. Dr. BadgerPack 12/30/2007 at 7:42 AM #

^while that is certainly a recipe for beating “teams like this”, I would shy away from making that the sole gameplan simply because it won’t work against better opponents. The team must run the entire offense in these “cupcake” games, just to see who can do what, work out the kinks and etc.

Of course, if JJ stays around 2 more years, we can give it to him all day long and Sidney can shake hands w/ the opposing coach at halftime 🙂

“Just wondering from those who went whether the seats were actually full?”

The seats were pretty full. It wasn’t 100% packed, but I’d say 85%-90%. I imagine the empty seats were those who had season tix and just didn’t show up. The only sections that had empty seats were the student sections, which is understandable ’cause they are on break. Personally, I was impressed with the attendence for a game over the break.

  16. Trip 12/30/2007 at 8:40 AM #

    Badger,

From what I heard on the radio, I can say that 3 of his rebounds were quality rebounds, he went in and used his body to grab a rebound. The other 2 I’m not certain about because I wasn’t able to listen to the entire game.

JJ staying another year at least is a distinct possibility now. He’d be joining a loaded draft in which unless he shaped up his raw turnover-prone game quite a bit in between now and then wouldn’t go much higher than #20. For a while he was rising in the ranks, but thanks to some lackluster games here and there he kind of slipped out according to most of the draft sites I’ve read.

  17. Dr. BadgerPack 12/30/2007 at 9:03 AM #

Well, #20 is probably good enough unfortunately– 1st round=guaranteed money. Just ask McRoberts about that.

  18. Lunatic Fringe 12/30/2007 at 9:53 AM #

Primewolf – I actually think Sid made a pretty nice adjustment at half to help cool down the WCU offense.

WCU was getting open shots off on one basic play – screen off the high wing by a big. The guard would either take the 3 or drive to the basket off of the screen.

The bigs started to cheat out onto the guards to push them further out making it a harder 3-point shot and slowing down the penetration to the basket. It seemed like a simple change, maybe should have occurred earlier in first half, but I thought the change really did help slow down the WCU offense.

  19. Packster 12/30/2007 at 9:59 AM #

With regard to attendance…I heard on the radio it was 14,500 or something right around that figure out of 19,722 or about 73% full. Lots of empty seats. There were just way too many people trying to get ticktets for what is usually available. The parking lot was full of fingers sticking up. Take your kids to the women’s game today at 2pm. The kids get in free, your ticket will cost less than you pay to park at the RBC and if you get there early enough you can sit right on the sidelines.

  20. TopTenPack 12/30/2007 at 10:13 AM #

    Off Subject….

Is there a good reason why NC State does not have a ticket exchange for season ticket holders? The university could make money from it and season ticket holders are happier. The seats could be fuller and it might put the scalpers out of business.

  21. StateFans 12/30/2007 at 12:18 PM #

^Would require someone to do the work.

  22. PackHooligan 12/31/2007 at 8:26 AM #

^Fringe, I have noticed all season that our bigs, with the exception of McCauley, do a horrible job defending the high screen. JJ has finally started to jump out to disrupt the rythm of the ballhandler.

The lack of a back-up shooting guard really showed up this game. Fells shot was just way off, and we didn’t have anybody to bring in to make up for this lack of production.

  23. zahadum 12/31/2007 at 8:28 AM #

JJ is far more ready for the NBA now than Ced Simmons was after 2 years. The log jam at his position is the only thing that brings him back for another year.

Since I ragged on him some earlier this year, its only fair that I give Big Ben his kudos when due. He’s currently shooting 81% on FT’s. Obviously put in some work on that area in the offseason.

Why would Fowler ever help out the “lunatic fringe”? He is too busy running his yapper to do any actual work.
