NC State Legislates Two Touchdown Beating of ECU, 34-20

More to come. Hey ECU, even in our worst season we are still 14 points better than ECU. We believe!

-From N&O ACC Blog:

In a certain sense, ECU joined itself in the record books by allowing State to score 34 points. The Wolfpack hadn’t cracked the 30-point barrier against a I-A team since a 52-14 win over ECU on Nov. 27, 2004. That was John Thompson’s last game as ECU’s head coach. State had gone 26 games without scoring 30 points against a I-A team.

I am happy with the OL improvement but we still cannot run the ball.

I didn’t get to watch much of the game, but it appeared that we started using the pass to set up the run instead of vice versa. Consequently we had a lot of 2nd and 5’s instead of 2nd and 10 or 12 and moved the ball better. That makes a huge difference in how long the defense stays on the field. Hopefully the coaching staff will build on the success of this game.

RabidWolf, the last blocked punt for a TD I believe was against Clemson in Clemson on that Thursday night game were State torched them for 38 pts. Lawson blocked the punt but I don’t remember if he ran it in or not. The most memorable TD of that night was Cotchery running in an attempted onside kick after Clemson scored and was trying to get back in the game.

Overall, this game was what the team really needed to motivate them for the rest of the season. I disagree with others who say we can win other games. I don’t think that this team can make enough big plays to beat any of our remaining opponents because injury has forced our talent-level down. More positively, this team is learning how to fight and scratch, and win with desire. That’s something that will pay many dividends when the talent level begins to mesh with the desire level.

^wasn’t it T.A. who ran in the touchdown on the onside kick? I could be wrong.

The defense got stronger as the game wore on. First time we have seen that in a long time.

Lawson blocked the punt vs. Clemson and Terence Holt ran it in. Jericho Cotchery caught the onside kick in stride and scored.

Who would have guessed right then that THAT was the highwater mark of the Amato era?

^I stand corrected. I remember the play exactly, but for some reason TA is running it back in my memory. Stupid memory. I actually went back and read the article from that game on ESPN.com. My how far we’ve come from that night and the talk of contending for an ACC championship or NC that year.

To quote myself from the WRAL blog thread earlier this week:

“We’re gonna win some games the back half of this season, and the story will change. Yeah, we can hang with ECU.”

ECU does not equal some of our other losses – Boston College, Clempson, Louisville, and Florida State – who have all been ranked in the top 20 at times this year. ECU was our best chance for a win the back half of the season.

UCF is or only bad loss this year and ECU is their only bad loss. UCF has actually shown themselves to be a pretty good football team. On the other hand, Louisville is underachieving, but they have talent.

UNC is our next best chance for a win, but there isn’t a game left on our schedule that should be written off as a loss.

UVA and Miami have been inconsistent.
Wake and Maryland are having nice seasons, but generally aren’t dominant and should be close games.

TA had that 30-yard 4th and 1 run for a TD when Clemson was in a goalline formation. Somehow he avoided fumbling the ball, although at the time we didn’t realize what a rare treat it was to watch score like that.

This win goes to Tom O’Brien… Staff had two weeks to prepare: to focus on fundamentals and gameplan for this key in-state game to turned the season around. Classic trap game for East Carolina, coming off an emotional 45-42 overtime win in El Paso, TX -ended 1am EST last Sunday morning. East Carolina wheels a high-octane scoring team with a banged-up defense. The Pack front-four defense was spectacular and dictated the flow. Tired Pirate legs and excellent preparation by O’Brien equals a fresh start for the second half of the season.
