NC State Legislates Two Touchdown Beating of ECU, 34-20

More to come. Hey ECU, even in our worst season we are still 14 points better than ECU. We believe!

Video Highlights | Box Score | Recap| Photos from the game

-From N&O ACC Blog:

In a certain sense, ECU joined itself in the record books by allowing State to score 34 points. The Wolfpack hadn’t cracked the 30-point barrier against a I-A team since a 52-14 win over ECU on Nov. 27, 2004. That was John Thompson’s last game as ECU’s head coach. State had gone 26 games without scoring 30 points against a I-A team.

When Kass lost his helmet, you could SEE Demario knock the breath out of him. He caught him right under his pads in the ribs. That looked like it really…really…hurt.

The DL AND the OL were absolute monsters in this game!! This win is gonna go a long way in the confidence department for the rest of the year.

The only player I am even remotely concerned with in the next game is Long, but if the OL plays like they did vs ECU…..no worries.

Kass looked to me like he was getting tired of getting hit. THAT’s a sign of great D Line play. I sincerely hope it continues.

Packaholic, if you don’t like the way we run the site, feel free to take your Amato fluffing elsewhere.

Yeah when Kass lost his helmet, I tensed up when I saw Demario going after him…I honestly thought he was going to get knocked out or hurt. You know he had to be scared looking into Pressley’s eyes and thinking, “Oh crap please don’t hit me without my helmet!”

My apologies for going out to dinner with the family after we went up 21-0. When we got home it was 21-17, but it didn’t take long for the karma to correct itself. I actually ran into a fellow State grad yesterday morning and we both expressed hopes that we could minimize the embarrassment yesterday, and get basketball season started as soon as possible. I would say we minimized the embarrassment pretty well.

Mark May named Kass and his pass into the back of the ECU lineman’s head (that Pressley picked off) as his bonehead play of the day. : )

BTW, am I correct that if anyone other than a State player had touched that pass, it would have been a penalty since it hit an ineligible receiver?

So Vermiglio is required to sit out one full game, due ACC rules? Doesn’t matter, he will probably get the chance to scrub the same toilets in Murphy building that McCullers had to do.

I don’t understand the “in game coaching left something to be desired” theme of some of you. The LB made a great play on Davis and forced an INT. Bowens has never returned KO’s before, but due to the lack of RB’s someone had to fill in for Eugene. That fumble was not “in game coaching”.

Rushing only three or four at the end of the first half may have looked bad, but what about towards the end of game when we got sacks on back to back plays? We only rushed the DL and dropped back into coverage, so was that bad coaching then? It’s the same concept, we knew they where in a passing situation both times.

The fake fg was dumb looking, but obviously we worked hard and focused on special teams play over the bye week. Did we not block a kick for a TD?

  9. RabidWolf 10/21/2007 at 10:09 AM #

If I am not mistaken, and sometimes I am, was that the first blocked punt for a TD in a couple of years?? I know we’ve blocked a few kicks in the recent past, but none returned for a TD. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

    I was wrong once…..thought I was mistaken, but I wasn’t. 🙂

Alan Michael-Cash got the hit on Kass w/out the helmet. But our DL today played great. There’s 2 improvements I’ve noticed in our last 2 games – the line play on both sides of the ball.

As far as our D goes – I thought our D had played good enough to win against UCF, BC, ‘Ville, FSU, and today, of course. The big difference between those days and today is that they weren’t on the field an absurd amount of time. Our OL gave Evans a good amount of time – and I’ve said that if Evans has time to throw, he can be an effective QB. The problem was he wasn’t getting this time. When he has time he can delivery the ball short passes – and he’s very accurate. His arm strength will always be an issue – as will his inability to throw on the run, but if you give this kid some time, he’s capable of making good decisions and leading us to victories.

Plus, Daniel has a good pedigree….GREAT JOB by a ‘patchwork’ OL. Maybe TOB found some bonus chemistry with Heppe and Ojo playing “out of position”. As was stated earlier in this thread, give Evans a little time, and he is very very effective. The arm strength question may have been aggrivated by the wind early, but there was really no need for very many deep balls today because of the way the OL held up for the RB’s and Daniel. Great decision making all around (with one glaring exception) and these kids never, never quit…refreshing.

I think Cash pulled the helmet off, but Pressley cleaned up, didn’t he? I’ll have to peek at the highlights.

I had a lot of complaints about some of the decisions at the end of the first half, but I have to give the coaches credit…they FIXED the problems and didn’t make those mistakes again. They continued to put pressure on Kass in the second half with a variety of blitzes. It’s tough to pressure a QB when they have five wides, but we seemed to show a lot of looks and then bring pressure from a variety of areas.

    Good job, staff!

  13. noah 10/21/2007 at 10:32 AM #

BTW, one more thing…speaking of blitzes…anyone can be a good QB if they have time. Thus the importance of constantly bringing pressure.

GOOD THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU PRESSURE THE QB.

  14. redfred2 10/21/2007 at 10:39 AM #

chop, that’s how I’ve seen it all along. He’s not going to wow anybody with great physical skills but given a scheme that’s tailored his game and placed behind a competent OL, Daniel Evans will make intelligent decisions more often than most, and he’ll get the job done.

  15. VaWolf82 10/21/2007 at 10:40 AM #

Sometimes bad things happen when you have to blitz to generate pressure. But bad things always happen when you can’t get any pressure on the QB.

  16. redfred2 10/21/2007 at 10:50 AM #

I seriously believe that if there had been a great OL in place all along, that we would have a whole different perspective on DE’s time in the pocket.

Who knows though, if that were really the case, he may not have ever gotten a chance to play to begin with.

What a great morning to wake up and realize what had happened.

It’s been a long time since I had this great of a morning before I even rolled out of bed!

Great win by the Pack. It’s obvious that the coaches and players worked hard during the bye week and improved, which is all we can ask. They played with passion and (mostly) with smarts. I thought some of Skip’s postgame comments were pretty whiny. I’ve never paid any attention to him – is he always a tool or did losing to State just touch a nerve with him? The deal about Conf USA making them play at UTEP last week and then play again this week at home (gasp!) was one of the more lame excuses I’ve ever seen. He also had the gratuitous whining about the officiating.

  19. noah 10/21/2007 at 11:19 AM #

The paper included the blurb about Holtz’s bitch about the officials. Then they said he was complaining about ONE call.

Gee…really? ONE call didn’t your way? One whole call?

    What an outrage.

  20. Wulfpack 10/21/2007 at 12:27 PM #

Holy moses, a pulse from the football program! All I know is many better days are ahead. I am very happy for TOB. We got the right guy, now let’s give him the time and support to do what he knows how to do.

    Great job Pack!

  21. Dr. BadgerPack 10/21/2007 at 12:32 PM #

I had this crazy dream that State won… please tell me it wasn’t the beer or the gallavanting around town w/ my stripper girlfriend… oops- said too much

  22. vtpackfan 10/21/2007 at 12:40 PM #

“Gee…really? ONE call didn’t your way? One whole call?

I know, he said that he wished he knew that the ACC refs “just let them play” out there, then maybe he would have prepared differently. Someone should ask Skippy if he watched ANY film of State’s LAST opponnet. We’re they just lettin’ Carr and Morgan play?

Didn’t remember our coach making a single comment about that play. He said afterwards that we have to stop giving up the big plays. Accountability. A word no ECU coach, player, or riotous fan ever want to use.

Evans had a very good game yesterday and it looks like he is throwing the ball well. With all the problems with that position over the last two or three years it is nice to have a solid game from a starting qb.

  24. bTHEredterror 10/21/2007 at 3:17 PM #

Young pulled off Kass’ helmet and Cash buried him. It was a clean hit at chest level, head across, and kind of gave me a tingle up my spine. This win was a gutshot followed by an uppercut for EZU. When Eugene caught the put-away TD, you could hear their hearts break. Heh Heh.

  25. RabidWolf 10/21/2007 at 4:14 PM #

The Wolf howls are STILL echoing all across Greenville and all points east of the Triangle!

This time, instead of a ‘Pack bashing party, the EZU student body, alums, and fans were playing Hank Sr.’s “There’s a tear in my beer”…..and just to add a final slap……..

    HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!
