SFN: ACC should say ‘Goodbye, Boise; Hello, Tampa’

The Big East is in the middle of conversations with city officials in Tampa, FL to potentially play a future bowl game at Tropicana Field.

They will need an opponent for the game. Would/Could the ACC be a natural choice?

Whereas the ACC used to play schools from the Big East in the old Tangerine/Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando and in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, the ACC’s re-alignment of bowl commitments in last year’s offseason left the ACC matched-up with a Big East opponent in only the Meineke Car Bowl in Charlotte. (I believe that the Gator has a split commitment where – in addition to a Notre Dame option – some years they choose a Big 12 team and some years they choose a Big East squad.

In light of the dearth of games against the Big East and the ACC’s natural geographic fit in Tampa, wouldn’t a conference affiliation in a game there be natural to presume? Don’t forget the ACC used to play in Raymond James Stadium in the Outback Bowl when it was known as the Hall of Fame Bowl. The SEC ultimately replaced the ACC in that match-up with the Big 10. We say that it is time for the ACC to say good-bye to playing football in Boise, Idaho in December and hello to Tampa, Florida.

I wish Bob Lee could make a real livin’, maybe eatin NC barbeque at all the county fairs in the state, instead of trying to be witty.

I get this imagine every time he tries to make a little point for the wolves, that he is really ewe’in it up on the Hill with his Carolina buddies, like the ol Hee Haw Buck on TV. Between them, their IQ’s don’t sum to 100.

Heck, I suspect it was ol’ Bob that drove over here with some of his drinking buddies to take a midnight shot at the Murphy Center. Nice try BobLee, but you ain’t gonna derain this football train.

Yikes! …. careful there Primewolf. That level of paranoia will grow hair in your palm and make you cross-eyed.

I’m assuming you are NOT inviting me to your tailgate on Nov 10.

I personally think BobLee is a wolf in disguise!!! SHED THE BLUE BOB!!

“Carolina Blue is just past tense for Carolina BLOWS!!”

    I love that…

    Actually enjoyed Swagger’s piece.

Since we already play ECU in the regular season – due to the dark foces of the evil lord — we will probably have to call that the Insepra Bowl. But then it’s probably more aptly the Forgeta Bowl for us and the Unforgeta Bowl for them.

“Remember the Sun Bowl? Held in beautiful….El Paso.”

FYI: We dont have to remember. The Sun Bowl (now the Brut Sun Bowl – is it still Brut, by Faberiege?) is alive and well, still in El Paso, and now in its 74th year.

BobLee: Funny stuff, and thanks for understanding on this issue,

Bob Lee’s common sense, sense of humor, and sense of perspective do set him apart from the usual UNC fan one encounters online. He tells me he’s not alone, and that there are many in the “silent majority” of UNC fans like him (except for the writing ability, I think). I can think of a couple others, and would be remiss if I didn’t mention my friends BubbaOtis and urCheerwine.

BobLee – Very good stuff! You forgot to mention Sid’s small lawn. Apparently he has a very large house on a very small lot. Not much to water.
But we’ll never do THAT again!!!

I like Bob Lee’s stuff. There are so many obnoxious, horrid UNC fans that pretty much any behavior this side of baby-raping will get a “That’s not so bad” from me.

good stuff Bob Lee, nice to see the N&O deservedly ridiculed on this one.

Why not just leave the BCS and have an ACC/Big East Challenge every year in football?

  12. lush 07/20/2007 at 10:48 AM #

    ^cause its DIVISION I FOOTBALL!!!!

    Lush,
I don’t think Lowe or Corchiani could have set you up better than that.
    And you are correct.

In my opinion, there are too many bowls already, and the number should be cut in half. Mediocre teams get rewarded for having a non-losing season, and it dilutes the whole postseason. The lower tier bowls are not exciting and do not garner a great deal of true exposure, because nobody besides the fans of the teams playing care enough to watch anyway. You sure don’t see sports bars across the nation packed to the gills for the Charlotte Toilet Bowl or the Boise Blue Frozen Tundra Bowl. Teams lower than 3rd or 4th in the conference shouldn’t get bowl bids. Period. And there should be no BCS bids for teams that do not play in a conference championship game (or win the conference, if no championship game), and no BCS bid for Notre Dame unless they go undefeated. Period.

“Carolina Blue is just past tense for Carolina BLOWS!!”

I heard that one this past weekend from and ECU fan. At least he and I agreed on something!

I agree that Tampa is better than Boise. I didn’t see anyone say otherwise.

The big bowl games have big teams. I think there will be some opportunities in the future to get tie ins with some middle of the road SEC or Big 10 schools. If we are already tied in to the Big East in Tampa, that’s one less opportunity for that to happen.

Why not do away with Boise and be patient to wait on something better to come along… or see if we can get a game in Tampa against a lower seeded SEC or Big 10 team instead of the Big East?
