Brandon Costner, a Thurl Bailey/Kenny Carr/Hawkeye Whitney/Tom Gugliotta-like forward has been a focal point for NC State Basketball this offseason. After a fantastic redshirt freshman season, the emerging force was invited to try out for the US Pan-Am team and his relationship with his father featured in this article from a Philadelphia newspaper. (Philly was coincidently the site of the Wolfpack’s first round NIT win over Drexel.)

Tony Costner returned to his home in France at 2:00 a.m. expecting to find his wife Stacy and two young sons tucked away in bed.

Walking into his house, he found his wife still well awake.

Even more surprising was his oldest son Brandon, a three-year-old, was yet to fall asleep.
“I said to my wife, ‘What the heck is he still doing up,'” said Costner laughing, recalling the story 16 years later. “She said, ‘He won’t go to sleep until he plays you to 21.'”

Today…Caulton Tudor wrote a nice feature on Costner in the N&O.

It took a while, but something finally went wrong on a basketball court for Brandon Costner.

When last seen, the young N.C. State forward, arguably the hottest player in the ACC, was dropping 30 points on Duke one night and 28 on North Carolina three days later in the conference tournament.

Shortly thereafter, in the third round of the National Invitation Tournament, the Wolfpack’s season ended in a loss at West Virginia, but only after Costner left fans with a 22-point, 13-rebound preview of things to come.

When Villanova coach Jay Wright later invited Costner to participate in tryouts for the United States’ entry in the upcoming Pan American Games, he seemed like a lock to land one of the 12 roster spots.

“But it wasn’t my week,” Costner, back in Raleigh, said Thursday.

The problem wasn’t so much Costner’s game as it was his right knee. Early in the July 15-17 camp near Philadelphia, a tendon in Costner’s right knee popped. The injury wasn’t serious enough to keep him out of drills, but it hampered his mobility.

In the article, Costner applauds Wolfpack recruit, Javi Gonzalez and provides a little insight into what we might see this season on the basketball court. Worth noting, our community has already weighed in on some of this with this great entry.

“The new guys are going to help a lot,” he said. “I’ve played with them a lot this summer, and I think they’re going make a difference. [Point-guard recruit] Javi Gonzalez is the real thing. He’s definitely going to help.”

Costner says his knee is back to 100 percent and that he’s counting the days until his next official practice session.

“I wish it would be tomorrow,” he said.

With his play, his quotes and his leadership in only his first season on the court, Brandon Costner has already proven that he ‘gets it’ and that he is committed to NC State.

Folks, Brandon Costner is the type of kid that ultimately play huge roles in building very successful, sustainable basketball programs.

I view Costner’s off-the-court characteristics as something akin to a alum like Terry Gannon — He will succeed while he is in school. He will attract media attention and other players with his attitude. He will have the opportunity to make good money and have a long professional career in basketball. After his career on the court ends, he will move on to some other kind of professional success…all the while remaining invested and involved with developments in West Raleigh.

We’re looking just as forward to BC’s sophomore year as he is.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that Brandon was just a red-shirt freshman last year. His demeanor, confidence, and leadership…especially at the end of the season…were typical of much older players.

Also, I am thrilled that this fine young man and terrific athlete is having the opportunity to work under a coach like Sidney Lowe who will no doubt help him reach his full potential.

I enjoyed seeing that article in the paper this morning. I am excited and majorly pumped for the praise he laid upon Javi. This goes well with the good scouting report Evtimov gave on Degand earlier this summer.
Sticking with hoops, I heard on 850 the buzz this morning that Phil Ford also was cited for watering his lawn on the wrong day of the week. He also resides in the same Brier Creek subdivision as Sidney Lowe.
Where’s Pacman Jones when you need him?

    With regard to Caulton Tudor…

Anyone notice how Tudor’s tone toward NC State basketball has taken quite a turn for the better, so far, in Lowe’s tenure? (I am sure Cedar will follow with his usual defense of the Desert Fox, but…) One of the biggest fallacies of the whole Sendek era was that he was so nice, such a good guy, that everybody really liked him—or should really like him—personally. I can tell you that multiple reporters told me first hand that they actually couldn’t stand Sendek because he wasn’t easy to talk to at all, said the same boring mechanical crap over and over, etc.

Who knows, at this point, what success Lowe will have, but he is winning the early PR campaign—and that makes a huge difference in building a contender. Media guys from Vitale to Tudor genuinely like Lowe and are helping him with pub like this. If Lowe can continue to win, this will snowball. He is so humble and likeable, he takes chances like donning the red blazer when we were way outmatched, and he gives the media guys great things to quote like,”Don’t let them punk you!” Who can’t get on that bandwagon a little bit? I know UNC fans who are big Lowe fans…

    With regard to Costner…

Can’t help but ditto SFN on what a vocal kid like Costner who really “gets it” and brings the all important publicity to a program whose fans want to really contend again means. His “this is what NC State does…win big games” quote back after the UNC win got me dreaming again. I’m with you, BC! I can’t WTTHISY to begin!

Brandon Costner is definitely a positive influence on the Wolfpack basketball program and we’re fortunate to have him. I certainly hope his and Ilian Evtimov’s assements of Javi are on the money. All we need is competent play out of the point guard and we’ll be very good. This year I think Gavin should rarely touch the ball until it’s over half-court.

As for the comparisons to some of the former State players, two are pretty accurate. Having watched Kenny Carr and Hawkeye Whitney play when I was a kid, there’s hardly anything, game-wise, Costner has in common with them.

Kenny Carr-About 6-8 and mostly a tough inside player. Never took many outside shots as I remember and certainly was not the ball handler Costner can be. Probably, at this point, was a stronger rebounder.

Hawkeye Whitney-A tough, tough competitor with a good medium range shot and only seemed to go inside off the rebound. I believe he was around 6-5 and had a year where he had a Charles Barkley type physique but slimmed down for his senior year.

Brandon as a redshirt sophmore is a much more complete player, already, than either Kenny or Hawkeye were. Not knocking either of them. I think he probably best compares to Thurl Bailey, but will drive from the top of the key to the basket. Although Thurl was a good ball-handling big man, I never saw him go down the lane and stuff it down anyone’s throat like Costner can.

In a way I’m glad Costner didn’t make the Junior USA team (or whatever it was). After already having had tendon problems, I could really see him having a hobbled year, like Atsur last year, who played way too much ball in the off-season. As young and well-conditioned as these guys are, their bodies still need some rest.

I certainly look forward to what I think will be a great year in NCSU basketball. Can’t wait for the Big Three games–win or lose–of course I believe WIN! 🙂

    Go Wolfpack!

Read the Philly article this morning and really liked it. I especially enjoyed hearing Brandon’s father talk about his’ and his’ son’s games (likes/differences).

For those who really appreciate the subtle arts of the game of basketball, NC State has two big men that are as impressive efficient, and explosive with their footwork then any tandem across the land. The article mentions the hours of work Brandon and his father labored through fine tuning the his footwork over the years. BC and Ben know how to get it done, and that makes any pg’s job easier to grasp.

Costner’s father also adds that his son bulked up a little and that once he get’s used to his frame he should be rock solid. I don’t think everyone out there really appreciates just how well rounded and gifted BC is, and how easy it would be for an NBA team to draft him as a mid first rounder next year. Forget that he’s not tall enough to play the 4 and not quick enough to play the 3 arguments. After he shook the rust off of the red shirt season (and we got our pg position back to where it needed to be) he became a beast. If he has a injury free season and pg’s handle their end then he is going to show us, the rest of the ACC (and hopefully some tv sets across the nation during the NCAA’s) that he can straight bring it.
Enjoy it while it lasts, and go pack.

Burning question that I’ll toss out there that is basketball related. Is Bartosz still a member of this team. I’ve seen him on campus this summer so I know he’s still enrolled. Thanx.

“I wish it would be tomorrow” too. When is our first game? I can hardly wait.

Last I hear Bart will receive a medical hardship. That will not be announced/ finalized until the fall.

Along those same lines, anyone know if Tracy Smith has qualified?

  10. brickman 07/22/2007 at 8:50 AM #

every one is good to go . we should be top 3 in acc and could be top 10 team if jj can give us some min. our bigs should be unstopable . no more double team on big ben .with the way ben dose a littel of every thing on our team it should open it up for every one else .teams are going to have a hard time with who they are going to try to stop .

  11. CarnifeX 07/22/2007 at 11:49 AM #

how can you not love this guy.

  12. stejen 07/22/2007 at 3:05 PM #

Terry Gannon did a lot for the program and he was an excellent student. However, I had the misfortune of meeting him on a few occassions when both of us were students there and lets just say I hope Costner is more down to earth and likeable then Gannon.

  13. beowolf 07/23/2007 at 1:07 AM #

If Gonzalez indeed turns out to be “the real deal,” then that would speak volumes about the scouting abilities of this coaching staff. When we got a commitment from him, he was being recruited by Dusquene and Campbell (and the Campbell guys, I know, are upset they lost him).

    Nice piece, SFN.

I am more exciteds about basketball than the V years. It is refreshing to hear coaches and players raise xpectations instead of quash them. It shows a confidence and competance that we have not had.

BC is going to be a beast. They already have engraved Travler’s name on the ACC POY trophy but it would not surprise me if BC is second.

  15. packgrad93 07/23/2007 at 9:57 AM #

very excited about the basketball season. Too bad Brandon got hurt his frosh season, he would have really helped that season. Maybe he’ll stay for 2 more years.

The injury Costner’s freshman year may have been a blessing in disguise. I think most big men really benefit from a redshirt year (though the days of doing that fore purely developmental reasons are all but over). He got to develop his floor game in real game action under a different coaching staff and that might have helped focus him/make him an inside-out rather than an outside-in post-player, which is one of the things that makes him so special. He can kill you inside, then leak outside for a very nice jumper or short drive. I don’t think he would have been as effective as a perimeter-shooter first post player, though his shooting skills and the prior offensive scheme would have made that very tempting.

I think Costner, Singletary and Hansbrough are your consensus pre-season All-ACC players and top candidates for POY. The key will be finding some one to consitently get him the ball (or, really, who can consistently get the ball up the court against pressure and initiate the offense; after that, I’m less concerned about PG play for this team). I was really surprised when he didn’t make the Pan-Am squad, but had read that he had ice on his knees, so just an untimely injury, I guess.

  17. Mike 07/23/2007 at 11:49 AM #

Agreed stejen – every time I see Gannon doing cliff diving, skating, or basket weaving in ABC, I shudder to think how much I disliked him. Good image, but not a nice guy.

  18. packgrad93 07/23/2007 at 11:57 AM #

^^ just meant it would have been nice to have his services year before last since he’s not syaying for his sr yr anyway.

right now, it sounds like javi may come out of the gates and start right away, is anyone else getting that feeling? it owuld be good news to hear that he is picking up Sid’s system so quickly. As both Degand and Johnson have had a yer to learn and practice with the team already.i cant wait to see hickson, mccauley, and costner ALL on the court at the same time, name one team that can match up with that in the acc.

  20. packgrad93 07/23/2007 at 1:08 PM #

^ not sure how much of that we’ll see

  21. vtpackfan 07/23/2007 at 6:35 PM #

Hopefully we can steal a big man from Duquesne or Campbell by ’09 to replace Costner,Hickson, McCauley, Big “Lew”….

  22. redfred2 07/25/2007 at 11:25 PM #

I think that with the incoming talent and the fact that responsibilities should be lessened, or at least narrowed and more defined, I am going to go waaaay out on a limb here to say that (((I))), redfred, believe we will witness a great upcoming season of basketball out of senior Gavin Grant. Possibly even an All ACC type season.

All he has to do is take it when comes, force the issue like always, but be well aware that he now has much more help at crunch time. Kind of still forcing the issue, but smarter, and now with the talented help in mind. Grant presents a real match up problem on offense but hopefully he, along with sidekick Corey Fells, have gained better perspective in this offseason, and both realize that what they’ve been doing just isn’t going to cut it as the season, and the surrounding young talent, progresses. Also, hopefully defensive positioning and good footwork have been relentlessly coached and pounded into Grant’s brain until it has become crystal clear.

Last call Gavin, no more talent deficits to worry about, no more need to take it all on your shoulders, time to go with the flow and show us what you’re really made of.

Repost – Found the BBall Thread.

Not to go off topic here, but I think we need to spend some time on John Wall – the 2009 Basketball PG prospect from Raleigh’s Word of God Academy. I say spend some time on him, because with him being in Raleigh, somebody who comes on here has got to know something about him.

He continue’s to dominate in summer camps and appears headed to five star status if not the #1 ranking for the position.

Does anybody know anything about him? I’m assuming if both us and Wake are hot on him, he’s got the grades? Does anyone know anything about Word of God Academy?

[…] With Gavin Grant’s presence now guaranteed, the Wolfpack is certain to return the bulk of last season’s squad that improved and looked more comfortable with each game. In fact, just last week a website listed that Coach Sidney Lowe’s team will return two of the top ten players in the entire conference in Brandon Costner and Gavin Grant. In case you missed it, you will definitely want to read this entry regarding Brandon Costner. […]
