Basketball Coaching Tenure

This article that focused on the average tenure of college basketball coaches ran a couple of weeks ago.

ACC coaches have an average tenure of 7.6 seasons at their respective schools, the most of any of the major conferences. Three have held the same job for 10 or more years –Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski (27), Maryland’s Gary Williams (18) and Boston College’s Al Skinner (10 seasons).

Worth noting…the only current coaches who have been at their current school for ten years or more:

Al Skinner, Boston College: 10 seasons
Mike Krzyzewski, Duke: 27 seasons
Gary Williams, Maryland: 18 seasons
Jim Calhoun, Connecticut: 21 seasons
Jim Boeheim, Syracuse: 31 seasons
Tom Izzo, Michigan State: 12 seasons
Lute Olson, Arizona: 24 seasons
Ben Braun, Cal: 11 seasons
Ernie Kent, Oregon: 10 seasons
Billy Donovan, Florida: 11 seasons
John Brady, LSU: 10 seasons

A lot of interesting nuggets in it. I don’t have time to do a lot of blogging on what I see, so please share your thoughts in the comments section.

    redfred,
I considered counseling. But then I realized hiring Sid was like having the mediocre chick who had few real redeeming qualities finally leaving you and you were relieved and content with being single a while but then you met the smoking hot girl who listens to the same music you do, doesn’t ask why they run it up the middle every time, encourages wings night with the guys and whose dad owns a house at the coast and a Grady White. You still have the scars, but the future is promising as long as you dont do anything stupid.

“The way that State fans continue to bring up Herb in every conversation is like going on a date with a new girl and talking about your ex the whole time. It’s over. Say goodbye and let him go, ya’ll. Only then can you move on.”

    Agreed.

But it’s sooo hard guys. There are no titles, no banners hanging in the RBC, not much to look at on paper, and if we Wolfpack fans don’t continue to talk about him, then his legacy will just fade away and be forgotten 4ever. And honestly now, nobody really wants that, do they?

I think the memory should have been burried at the one year anniversary. How about virtual funeral to signal the end of the era.

The good SS’ers finally got through to me and I converted into true ” ” believer right before he left here. Now, there is no way in hell I’m letting him just fade into oblivion this soon after ten full years of selfless, first *class* service. All of it done in name of, and devoted to, the betterment of the NC State basketball program. I’ll continue to do my small part, but the man is an institution, he deserves much more.
