Beasley to K State? Maybe, Maybe Not. (Updated 12pm)

Michael Beasley is a 6’8 forward that can play the wing or the post
and is undoubtedly one of the five best high school players in this year’s senior class. Some recruiting services rank Beasley as the best prospect of the lot. Just last week he laid claim to some pretty significant hardware when he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the annual McDonald’s All-America game.

Why are talking about Michael Beasley today?

(1) This article from a Kansas newspaper from earlier this morning helps set the stage for you:

While Kansas State has shored up its next men’s basketball coach with the promotion of Frank Martin, the same cannot yet be said about its No. 1-ranked recruiting class.

Late Friday K-State announced that Martin, along with fellow Bob Huggins former assistant coach Dalonte Hill would both be promoted, but there is still some uncertainty in the future of top recruit Michael Beasley.

In fact, Beasley has seemed to go back-and-forth on his decision to fulfill his commitment to the Wildcats.

In Saturday’s Memphis Commercial Appeal, Beasley was quoted saying that wants out of his national letter of intent to K-State and that he wants to weigh his options again, while still leaving the Cats as a possible destination.

“I hope that they let me leave,” he said. “I haven’t brought it to their attention yet, but hopefully I can get a release. I’m not saying I’m not going to end up at Kansas State. It’s just I don’t want to go there and there be a coach I’m not getting along with, you know? Or I don’t fit his style of play. That’s not saying I’m not going to Kansas State. It’s just opening up my options.”

But during the Nike Hoop Summit game Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Beasley told a Fox Sports reporter that he would be going to K-State after all. However, he did say he would like to visit with Martin.

Beasley told the Commercial Appeal that he might have interest in the Memphis Tigers, Texas, or even joining Huggins at West Virginia.

Add those to a list of other schools that fellow KSU commit Dominique Sutton told The Mercury on Thursday have already expressed interest in the coveted 6-foot-10 forward. Sutton told The Mercury that N.C. State, Florida State and USC have already shown interest in the pair.

However, now the “package deal” Sutton spoke of Thursday night appears to be off, saying he will attend K-State, whether Beasley does or not.

“We always talked about going to the same college and that’s what we planned on, but with Huggins leaving, we didn’t think that would be K-State,” Sutton said. “Now though, I feel a lot more comfortable with things up there and I will be there. Mikey, I don’t know if he is planning on going still or not.

“That’s up to him.”

Repeated attempts to reach Beasley by phone were unsuccessful.

(2) On Sunday afternoon, CNNSI ran this article that was updated at 2am in the morning and included the following:

After producing eight points (3-for-15 from the floor) and nine rebounds in the Nike Hoop Summit on Saturday in Memphis, Beasley told SI.com that he was leaning toward seeking a release from his letter of intent so he could play at the University of Memphis.

But that view changed Sunday. “I’m committed to the school, not to the coach,” Beasley said. “I’m committed to the school, and I gave my word that I would play for Kansas State.”

Beasley’s mother, Fatima Smith told The Topeka Capital-Journal and The Kansas City Star that her son would honor the national letter of intent he signed with the Wildcats in November.

“The drama is over,” she said. “Yes, Michael will be there [at K-State] for the next school year.”

(3) ESPN hasn’t updated its Beasley article since Saturday, but he certainly doesn’t sound signed, sealed, and delivered to Little Manhattan:

Beasley said his phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the news broke, and that he has formalized an early list of schools that could be a good fit for him if released from Kansas State.

“I’m really thinking about Memphis right now. NC State and Florida State, too,” he said.

SFN Comments
This “Beasley talk” started late last week. We felt that a lot of change was going to happen in a short amount of time, so we chose to wait a bit before putting any of this on the blog. The fantastic Section Six followed the iterations of the story since Thursday (4/5). You can click here and scroll down and follow some of the entries from Wolfpack interested in K-State recruits? => K-State Saga => Beasley Sticks With KSU => Or Not.

We don’t anything about any recent connections between anyone related to Beasley and NC State. Back in the fall, we were very pleased to learn that both Beasley and OJ Mayo had contacted NC State to have some discussions with the program. Once Letters of Intent were signed it was obvious that the conversations had not led to any surprise commitments.

Situations like these (K-State’s coaching change) are a perfect example of WHY you talk with kids and plant as many ‘seeds’ as you can. You never know when they may bloom. If Michael Beasley were to commit to NC State, the Wolfpack’s program would feel A LOT of impacts – one of which would be immediate improvement on the court and one of which would be a loud and clear message to the nation and to future highly rated recruits that RALEIGH is a PLACE TO BE!

ALL I said (see first post) was that it would show class if Sid talked to Costner and McCauley about it, being that it’s not a normal recruit, it’s someone basically performing a pre-season transfer. Just in this situation. It’s not like it’s January and this guy is committing to State. It’s freakin April. To me the ideal situation would be he comes to State, everyone is happy, we go undefeated. I’m just trying to introduce another point of view since everyone on here is drinking the Kool-Aid apparently.

  2. RedTerror29 04/09/2007 at 3:13 PM #

^I agree Costner and McCauley shouldn’t read about it in the paper if it does happen. Sid should keep them up to speed as a courtesy (but he shouldn’t ask them anything).

  3. waxhaw 04/09/2007 at 3:23 PM #

In the long run, we would probably be better off using any additional open scholarships on the 2008 class.

  4. packpigskinfan23 04/09/2007 at 3:43 PM #

IF he comes to State he would probably have to wait a year because K-State isnt gonna let him out of he LOI… Costner could be heading to the NBA… but then again, if this kid is good enough, he might be able to at that time as well.

I predict he stays at K-State

  5. JimValvano 04/09/2007 at 3:55 PM #

I don’t want him. I like what we’ve got. If he comes…along with JJ and Tracy…its gonna significantly cut into the minutes of our heart and soul….McCauley. He sets the tone for us inside. He sets the tone for our whole team…we need his emotion. I’m telling you this and I quote my namesake on this one I’ll take a team full of gym rats over a team full of divas anyday

  6. JimValvano 04/09/2007 at 3:57 PM #

Has anyone heard anything on Big Lew? Is he transferring or is that all just some b.s. rumor? I haven’t heard anything about losing anyone else. Have any of ya’ll?

  7. lush 04/09/2007 at 4:09 PM #

i like what weve got too, and i like the guys coming in. but beasely is a hell of lot better than anyone we have coming sans jj. hell he would probably be the most talented player on the team. and you people dont want him? that is ridiculous.

  8. lush 04/09/2007 at 4:11 PM #

he also said when he signed with huggy that he was gonna stay all 4 years. probably not the case but he was at least thinking about it. this kid would be an unbeleiveable addition to the team, the highest ranked recruit we have ever had and it would put c-lowes first class as the best in the country.

  9. lush 04/09/2007 at 4:12 PM #

    well, first real class anyway.

  10. JimValvano 04/09/2007 at 4:21 PM #

I prefer to judge ’em when they leave. Shit…look at what happened to Shavlik Randolph…he was a number one recruit. McRoberts too. Furthermore, I think Zoubek was this years #1. I think I might take Big Lew over him. lol

I’m not saying Beasley’s not any good. From what I’ve seen he’s quite dynamic. I just am happy with what we’ve got…unless Tracy doesn’t qualify. Now if he doesn’t qualify…I think we may have something. I’m just kinda worried about the scholorship situation too. I really don’t think we have any…isn’t there a max?

  11. brickman 04/09/2007 at 4:45 PM #

it would be hard to turn that kid down . but what we have is a great team already and a good coach . look what sid did in recruting before we went to acc championship .. we will be alright if he comes or not we will be fine…

  12. choppack1 04/09/2007 at 4:45 PM #

Jim – I don’t know where you get your info from but neither Shavlick nor Zoubek were the No. 1 rated recruits in their classes.

Shavlik was once a hot commodity, but he had an injury his senior year and was a top 35, but not not Top 5 recruit. Zoubek was a Top 35 if memory serves correct.

  13. vtpackfan 04/09/2007 at 4:51 PM #

If Smith can’t come in with this class, then yes Beasley would make a fine addition. He’s going for a year then on to the pro’s, so it would be like knowing you had two seniors (along with GG) going into next years recruiting. That would mean both Williams and Mays get those schollies, and any transfers would be used to entice big men (Baciu, Davila, ect.). It makes sense on paper.

The chemistry part, I don’t know. I didn’t do well in chemistry.

“Shit…look at what happened to Shavlik Randolph…he was a number one recruit. McRoberts too. Furthermore, I think Zoubek was this years #1.”

Zoubek was 38th in Scouts rankings, 4th among incoming Duke players(24th in Rivals, and 2nd among Dukies). Greg Oden was the top ranked guy, with Durant second. Shavlik Randolph was 12th (all I could find on him at Scout was that he was the 7th ranked PF for c/o 02), and 2nd in that Duke class according to scout (one spot ahead of JJ Redick). McRoberts was infact Scouts #1 overall recruit, so you atleast got that one (Well 2nd at Rivals, but I won’t quivel about that).

In my dream world, we get Beasley’s one year, then Baciu takes over his ‘ship while lottery teams fight over Beasley on draft night (wearing a block ‘S’ hat for the world to see).

It would surprise me if EVERY projected scholarship player for next season is actually here come fall.

  16. vtpackfan 04/09/2007 at 7:36 PM #

“It would surprise me if EVERY projected scholarship player for next season is actually here come ”

Absolutely. Sid isn’t making any inquiries of players if some scholasships wern’t still on the table.

I honestly thought the Beasley and Sutton thing at KSU was a hoax. Going to the media and threatening to leave seemed like something Martin and Hill put them up to.

I said it last year in a thread concerning the LOI recruit Davis we lost to SH. I think the Pirates picked up his AAU coach, or something like that. The player/AAU coach thing has gotten stranger and stranger to me. I think it’s sad that these 18 years olds have to get their security blankets. At some point you have to go at it as an individual. But no one cares, they are good at basketball so people continually give them what they want.

  17. waxhaw 04/10/2007 at 7:17 AM #

Didn’t Bob Gibbons have Damien Wilkins #1?

2008 is supposed to be a really strong year for recruiting.

If I knew who was leaving/not coming, I might have a different opinion but at this point, I really like our players. I think a year to digest who pans out, who leaves early and who is a bust would be helpful.

With the interest Sidney is getting, I think we will have a shot at many more top recruits. Either way getting mentioned with Beasley is a recruiting coup because of the press he gets.

  18. brickman 04/10/2007 at 7:49 AM #

smith says he will sign this week on first or second day .. says he will have no trouble with sat . also said that with him / jj/ ben/costner they will be unstopable….I LOVE IT .GO PACK

  19. BoKnowsNCS71 04/10/2007 at 9:32 AM #

I sure am NOT going to miss the flow of guys out of our program after one year to go play at other schools.

  20. packbackr04 04/10/2007 at 11:04 AM #

again.. greaat news brickman.. where did you read that?

  21. nycfan 04/10/2007 at 11:50 AM #

On a tangent, Brackman has not exactly been on fire in baseball … solid but not anywhere near as spectacular as predicted after summer ball … any chance he might return to the fold and play hoops next season?

  22. ChuckAllYall 04/10/2007 at 3:27 PM #

^ Unlikely. A 6-11 fireballer is going to get paid big bucks even if he is having a bit of a down year. The pro (baseball) scouts love his size and athleticism….all things you can’t teach

  23. branjawn 04/10/2007 at 4:20 PM #

I didn’t see it on any threads, has anyone posted on here that we will be participating in the 2007 Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Florida, over Thanksgiving weekend? The field will include NC State, Central Florida, George Mason, Kansas State, Penn State, Rider, South Carolina and Villanova.

  24. brickman 04/10/2007 at 6:19 PM #

packbackr04 had to go to work got it from packpride.com..

  25. bTHEredterror 04/10/2007 at 9:58 PM #

Great to hear branjawn! It’s great to see we may have a couple of compelling games very early in the season for a change.
