Is Fowler Working the NIT Phones?

With the Senior Day win over Wake Forest, NC State is now assured of no worse than a .500 record when the ACC Regular Season and Tournament is over. Currently, the Wolfpack is 15-13 with at least two games to play, at Maryland to end the season, and a most likely 7/10 match-up in the ACC Tournament in Tampa.

Many assume that an NIT bid is in the hand. But is it? Changes have been made to the NIT postseason tournament since the NCAA took it over in 2006. In summary, these are the changes:

1)You no longer need a .500 or above record to be selected to the NIT tournament. Although please note that no team was selected last year with a sub .500 record.

2)There is a true NIT selection committee, with actual procedures to select the teams. You can read all about the selection process here. These were the committee members last year, and we assume this year as well.

3)Regular Season conference champions are guaranteed a spot in the NIT field. This doesn’t impact Regular Season champions of major conferences like the ACC, Big 10, etc, but it does impact lower level conferences such as the CAA, Southern Conference, etc and could impact lower level teams in major power conferences – teams like NC State. If a Regular Season champion from one of the lower level conferences doesn’t win its conference tournament and secure the automatic NCAA bid, then that team is automatically selected for the NIT. In other words, lower level conference tournament upsets means less spots available in the NIT field for teams like NC State and other power conference teams.

4)The NIT field is no longer 40 teams in size, it is 32 teams.

What does this mean for NC State? It means hopefully Lee Fowler is working the phones, making the case for NC State and Sidney Lowe to receive a NIT bid. What worries SFN is the resume of possibly 3 other ACC teams that are potential NIT field worthy. Miami and Wake are out of contention. UNC, UVA, Va Tech, Duke, Maryland and most likely BC are in the NCAA field. GT, Clemson and FSU are on the NCAA bubble (with Tech being closer to the inside, and Clemson and FSU outside looking in). Most likely ONE of those bubble teams will make the NCAA field, and two will not. Certainly, FSU and Clemson can be considered “opponents” for NC State’s NIT bid. Let’s hope Lee Fowler realizes that and is working the phones, calling those NIT committee members, and making the case for NC State.

    “Just take it and go.”

Um, I’m sorry, but that was my feeling at the end of the season last year. I didn’t want the national spotlights blaring on a team that had played (DOWN) well below everyone’s expectations and was mentioned as an early round exit team in the NCAA’s, all based solely on one dimensional and single factor, the three point shot.

If this depleted group has somehow played themselves (UP) into position to play in any post season tournament, I say let ’em play, and to hell with the overall W/L record.

In fact a case could be made for an at-large for some of the mid-majors. ASU beat some big teams this season.
A buddy (App grad) and I were discussing this exact scenario for the SoCon this morning. Both Davidson and ASU are on the at-large bubble according to the DanceCard. So if one wins the tourney, the other just may get in with an at-large bid. If App gets in, I wonder if they’ll show this horrid recruiting video during commercial.

I knew I could count on you Red.

Massive amounts of chatter regarding Ty Lawson . . . .being supensded, gone from the team, gone from UNC, just plain gone.

To stay on topic, I almost believe I would be more excited to watch this team make a decent run in the NIT than I was last year about the NCAA.

I think the last time State was in the NIT, the games were at Reynolds. I was there for the Georgia and Sw Mo State games- I remember that

Something is wrong with this process.

If there is an upset in the mid major conference tourney, the big conferences could get screwed twice. Once when the unworthy winner gets in the NCAA’s (and potentially an at large that didn’t win). Again, when the regular season champ, who couldn’t win their weak arse tourney makes the NIT.

I’ll hold any further argument until it pans out but the ACC deserves 7 NCAA bids and 3 NIT bids this year.

This is my first post and I first want to thank those responsible for the quality of the site. Having said that, I agree with the comments above that this year has been such a pleasant suprise that anything beyond the current accomplishments would be gravy. I graduated in 81 and remember seeing Sid play – what an exciting time. Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it back to State to see a game since (though we do catch them on the road when they come to UVA.) Now I’m at a place in my career when I can get away more which coincides with my renewed interest in our basketball and football programs. I look forward to taking a more active role in supporting my team. So I say…bring on the NIT!

now whats the deal with Ty Lawson?!

I REALLY hope the NIT thing happens for us. I think the scenario for us getting in includes at least one win in the ACC tourney.

but screw that. lets win them ALL!

  13. joe 03/01/2007 at 6:55 PM #

The last time the Pack was in the NIT the games were at the RBC Center – 3 wins at home before the Pack went to NYC. That was 2001.

  14. joe 03/01/2007 at 6:57 PM #

Correction – the Pack was in the NIT in 2000. 2001 was the bad season with no bid to the NIT or NCAA.

Could someone tell me what the big deal is about the ACC-Big11 challenge is? Does that game not count against our 27 or something. Cause personally I could give a crap about playing in the Whoopety-Doo Challenge.

*Could someone tell me what the big deal is about the ACC-Big11 challenge is?*

Made for TV event. ESPN wins because of quality matchups. the ACC wins because of the exclusive exposure: thats the only thing that is talked about in college basketball for 3 days. The individual schools win because they are guaranteed a game against a name opponent on ESPN or ESPN2 and the exposure that comes with it.

  17. packpigskinfan23 03/01/2007 at 7:54 PM #

^it could only help each others RPI’s…

  18. Wulfpack 03/01/2007 at 8:04 PM #

“Actually I do doubt it. With an NIT field of 32, it’d be difficult to invite 4 ACC teams.”

No doubt. Gone are the days when every team from a major conference with a winning record gets in. It’s much more competitive today, and there are other factors involved. There are also bound to be some mid majors that don’t win their conference tourney that get bumped to the NIT. Right now I don’t think GT, Clemson or FSU gets into the NCAA Tourney. That sure could change, and hopefully so.

    How about Maryland? Very impressive.

  19. highonlowe 03/01/2007 at 8:04 PM #

supposed Lawson just missed a team meeting and he won’t start, not suspended

  20. shellnc 03/01/2007 at 8:07 PM #

Why are you guys always worried about losing? With that attitude, I think we ought to shut down the program. You have to take a chance that you might lose in order to win. We ought to be worried about winning. Let’s catch lightning in a bottle and go win the ACC tourney, then we won’t be playing in the NIT. If we win a couple of games in the ACC torney then we are going to the NIT. Then we can beat mid-majors just like we did early in the season. We might even get to 20 wins. We are only 5 wins away. Beat the terps. Win 2 in the ACC tourney, and keep on roling.

    ———————————————————————————-
    ———————————————————————————–
What no one is saying is that the NIT would pair us up with someone we would die if we lost to, for example: Winthrope, High Point, App St, Davidson, Charleson, VA Commonwealth, Hofstra, ODU, ETSU, or Belmont? (now some of those will win their tournaments and go dancing I know).
And those are just the mid-majors in our area. The odds of getting a 1st round marquee matchup are slim to none.
The odds of a no-name opponent, a small crowd, and a loss are much higher.

  21. shellnc 03/01/2007 at 8:23 PM #

So a game against Penn state, Northwestern, or Minnesota is supposed to be some great event. I personally have always thought that the ACC-Big11 challenge is stupid. It’s like most events that ESPN has created, an steaming overhyped pile of dung.

ESPN creators of XGames, Women’s Basketball – both college and WNBA, poker, the new Monday night Football, College Gamedays…shall I go one?

Give me back the Big 4 or the Dixie challenge. Let us create something great, not ESPN creating a bunch of hype and telling us what is and isn’t great. Cause the ACC-B11 challenge sucks.

Considering expectations before the season, challenges for the players and coaching staff, and competition in the ACC this year, an NIT bid would be a pleasant reward.

    Is it our goal?
    Absolutely not.
Would it be embarassing to lose to a “low major/mid major”?
    Yes.
Should we bother to show for the NIT?
If you consider thsi a valid question, the answer is no.

If you are a REAL fan, and stick by your school regardless of the circumstances, the question is moot. A chance to assemble with other Red Blooded Pack-Backers, and cheer on a big cardiac group of young men to a trip to NYC, where two of our own (Costner & Grant) can play in front of a large group of hometown fans? Sounds like fun, I’m in.

By the Way, while there are some smaller schools involved, a good amount of solid teams that would draw sellout crowds during the regular season at the RBC, will be involved. Last years field had Notre Dame, St Joe’s, Temple, Charlotte, Okla St, Vandy, SC, Houston, Stanford, Louisville, and Michigan.

Damn you Hokies for losing! Now UNC has a chance at the 1 seed…

Just got back from the Winthrop-UNC-Asheville game. Sloppy game, but Winthrop prevailed. Jeez, has anyone else seen that 7’7″ monster that Biedenbach has? He drops it in without even stretching. That is, if can find the basket!! Lumbers up and down the court about as fast as my 91 year old mother in law!

I’m glad we got Sidney versus Marshall though. He would have driven me crazy with his antics!

Carolina’s down 7 with :35 to go… so VT’s loss might not hurt too badly.
