Lowe Wins 3rd in Row vs UNC (Updated 2/4)

Two games this week…two wins over teams sitting in first place of the ACC!

Sidney Lowe “gets it”. 15 point underdog stuns UNC in Raleigh. What a difference a year – and a coaching change – can make! We had an entry open during the game that has some of our comments about the game.

* After finishing his playing career with two straight wins over Carolina in 1983, Sidney Lowe starts his coaching career by successfully defending NC State’s home court with a win over #3 ranked UNC-Chapel Hill.

* Every media outlet in America has mistakenly misquoted Sidney Lowe’s record against UNC today. I don’t know what our SID has been doing all day, but can SOMEONE please get in touch with ESPN (and other media outlets) and explain to them that Sidney Lowe’s playing days incuded more than just one win vs the Heels? This mistake is everywhere! (Kind of like how Philip Rivers ‘never lost a bowl game’ despite the fact that State lost to Pitt in the Tangerine Bowl). The mistake was even misquoted at halftime of the radio broadcast of tonight’s Maryland-Wake Forest game. Jeez.

* Speaking of media outlets:
(a) This link will take you to a consolidation of stories on the game.
(b) this link will take you to the N&O’s blog that has a host of links related to the game.
(c) This link will take you so a super audio slide-show done by JP Giglio at the N&O.
(d) This link includes 48 great pictures from the N&O.

* Like Jim Valvano used to do, Coach Lowe wore a red blazer for the occassion that he called “special” in his post game radio comments. Special? You mean it isn’t just 1/16th of the conference schedule? You can get a nice view of the attire here.

* In addition to notching the biggest win the ESA/RBC’s history, the Wolfpack have won consecutive games against Top 25 opponents for the first time since 1990-1991 (Georgia Tech, UNC-CH) .

* Carolina is the highest-ranked opponent State has beaten since the Pack’s win over third ranked Wake Forest in the 2005 ACC Tournament. You will remember that as the game that the Demon Deacons played without All-American point guard Chris Paul who was suspended for punching Julius Hodge in the groin in the team’s regular season finale the previous week.

* Additionally, Lowe joins Press Maravich and Les Robinson as NC State coaches since Everett Case who beat Carolina in their first game.

* Coach Lowe is now 2-1 vs Big Four opponents with return games (vs Wake, @ UNC) remaining on the schedule. Another win vs a Big Four team this year would get Coach Lowe three wins vs Big Four opponents in one regular season (in five games). The Wolfpack’s last head coach didn’t win his third regular season game against Big Four competition until his third season despite having six opportunities per year instead of five. This link will take you to an old entry (2005) related to recent performance against the Big Four.

* Many analysts are already talking about the Wolfpack’s win with terms like ‘passion’ and ‘hunger’ and ‘desire’. What a WONDERFUL testimomy to Coach Lowe’s intensity and ability to communicate to his players. It has been more than ten years since anyone has remotely associated a win by Stat to simple motivation and passion. WRAL’s blog says that “The Pack wanted it more”

It was an unbelievable day for Lowe, who was wearing a bright-red blazer. It was a good omen. As much as anyone, he knows how badly N.C. State fans want to beat Carolina, and he delivered in his first game against the Tar Heels.

* The win also saw students take to Hillsborough Street for one of the first times in years. Although the ‘celebration’ pales in comparison to the old days, it is nice to see it happen. Video (and other related items) can be found at WRAL-TV5.

* Loved these quotes not to be ignored.

* This national story from Fox Sports included a better acknoweldgement of the big picture than most national outlets typically get right:

Lowe was hired to win these types of games. He was the point guard on the Jim Valvano-coached Wolfpack team that beat North Carolina twice as a senior in 1982-83 and went on to win an improbable national championship.

In recent seasons N.C. State’s fan base grew increasingly frustrated with consistent losses to rivals Duke and North Carolina under coach Herb Sendek, who went 8-38 against those schools during his 10 seasons before leaving for Arizona State.

“It means (Lowe) is going to be around here for a long time,” Costner said. “You (media) guys can look forward to keep interviewing him, keep talking to him and just see Wolfpack basketball take off again.”

* To the ‘younger set‘ of Wolfpack fans whose memories don’t extend pass 1990, we’d like to say welcome to reality. THIS is what it is supposed to be like.

Fringe – you should send that email.

Dykes interviewed Lowe and asked what made the difference. Lowe’s answer: “Guts. Guts.”

Love it. Also love the red blazer. I could not be happier with any other coach.

I was thinking before the game that our only chance would be if all 5 starters had great games. It happened!

    The rest of our schedule:

02/06 at Ga Tech 7:00 PM
    02/10 at Miami 4:00 PM
    02/14 Maryland 7:00 PM
    02/18 #18 Va Tech *4:00 PM
    02/21 at #3 UNC *9:00 PM
02/24 at Florida St *1:00 PM
    02/28 W Forest 9:00 PM
    03/03 at Maryland *3:30 PM

Every one of those games is winnable. It is a long shot, but 5 more wins is possible. That and a first round ACC tourney win would probably get us in, with a solid schedule and some quality wins. And as a fallback, the NIT certainly looks like a lock at this point, something that was much less certain a week ago.

Let me be the first to say…there is NO WAY we beat UNC at Chapel Hill. Got it? NO WAY. There’s NO CHANCE of winning there. Everyone hear me?

    ZERO chance.

    100 % guaranteed loss.

    Bank on it.

  4. MrPlywood 02/03/2007 at 6:23 PM #

Damn Noah, so let’s just forfeit OK? Unless your post was tongue in cheek, but I don’t think it was. Do you think for one second that Sidney is looking at the schedule right now? Hell no. He’s thinking about Ga Tech – the next game. That’s the way he won this one…

  5. noah 02/03/2007 at 6:25 PM #

So, I didn’t make it obvious enough?

Okay….how about this? Elephants will tapdance, golf carts will win the Indy 500 and pigs will fly before we win in the Dean Dome.

  6. Lunatic Fringe 02/03/2007 at 6:26 PM #

    noah…Good call.

I will send it now that I have finally caught my breath. Wow…what a game.

  7. Packster 02/03/2007 at 6:28 PM #

    Just like today!

I want to hear Roy’s post-game comments. That will be sweet.

  9. noah 02/03/2007 at 6:29 PM #

    Packster – exactly.

    NO shot.

  10. Packster 02/03/2007 at 6:29 PM #

Winning in their pad is next….maybe not this time…but soon. AWESOME AWESOME Jimmy V video!

  11. StateFans 02/03/2007 at 6:29 PM #

It is now officially a rivalry again. Let’s hope there are more great games like this one. We won’t win them all, but we’ll get our share.

  12. noah 02/03/2007 at 6:30 PM #

BTW, I’m enjoying reading the Inside Carolina comments about how they was robbed by the refs calling hand-checks.

They admit their players were hand-checking and then bitch that the refs called it?

    Buh??

Some fun quotes from the Tarhole boards at Inside Carolina:

“We just lost to NC State. Let me repeat that: We just lost to NC State.
In Sidney Lowe’s first game against us as coach. Chew on that a bit.”

“I will catch so much @#%$ for the next week”

    “Tractors> BMWs”

“This has got to be one of the worst officiated games I have seen in a long time.”

“Been depending on wearing people out with depth so much that when a team finally slows us down and doesn’t get gassed we blow it.”

    and my favorite:

    “pfft wtf ever
    state still @#%$
    f em”

Hole Nation also seems to be turning on Ol’ Roy…

“Roy isn’t as good as Dean was at closing games.”

“I think Roy got outcoached today.”

    “Terribly coached game by Roy”

Oh boy, this is so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a call to all Pack Fans who are computer literate, if anyone could post this game up anywhere, or start streaming live games, it would be fantastic for us Pack Fans living abroad!

    GO PACK!

Man, it was a good day for sending e-mails to my UNC alum family!

  15. noah 02/03/2007 at 6:32 PM #

“All we are saying is it would/could have been an interesting ending had the “hand checks” not been called (at the end of the shot clock, no less!).”

    Ha!!

  16. dthompson44 02/03/2007 at 6:32 PM #

Got chills watching the V video–what an awesome day!

Equally big was getting over our struggles at home. We can now look forward to home games, in addition to not being intimidated on the road. How cool must it be for Lowe to get his first ACC home win against UNC?

Thanks also to the gracious comments from the UNC fan early in this thread. Very gentlemanly.

  18. Packster 02/03/2007 at 6:32 PM #

The first win against the tarholes in the age of blogging. Doesn’t the word “AWESOME!!!” keep coming to mind?

  19. Gene 02/03/2007 at 6:33 PM #

I am so so so so so happy….there aren’t enough words in any language to say how happy I am right now…

    GO PACK!

  20. hoop 02/03/2007 at 6:33 PM #

THE GREAT THING to me is that we showed poise and as Sidney Lowe said in the post game comments, “GUTS” in the face of a Carolina team constantly edging away the lead. GUTS that Wolfpack basketball hasn’t had in many years!

    Great Job Wolfpack!!

  21. dabigdog 02/03/2007 at 6:34 PM #

    Time for the 20-year contract.

  22. Packster 02/03/2007 at 6:34 PM #

N & O has the story posted. I talked to a Carolina fan yesterday who assured me this game would be 30 points in their favor. He told me to call if we won. I did…no answer!

  23. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/03/2007 at 6:36 PM #

Roy just said on postgame that the refs called 3 “touch fouls” on them at the end and it was their fault. What a Loser

  24. noah 02/03/2007 at 6:36 PM #

Carolina fans should go with their gut and fire Roy. Obviously, he sucks.

  25. WAWolf 02/03/2007 at 6:37 PM #

unbelievable! unbelievable that i even got to see the game, since i live in the pacific NW (where the networks NEVER show ACC basketball), much less that we won! felt like i was back in reynolds, high-fiving my five-year old boy, kissing my seven-month old girl, dancing around the living room…didn’t think we had a snowball’s chance at winning this one. still not sure how sid pulled it out, but it feels great to be a wolfpacker again! the malaise of the last ten years vanished just like that!
